WIP Wednesday // Azriel Finds Elain After Battle.

A Snippet // Rough Draft from Chapter 33 of What Bloomed in the Darkgarden.

Azriel did not know if hours or entire days had passed since the battle of Hybern ended as he limped up the stairs of the townhouse.

Frays of war were long and messy that way. Time slipped away when scouring fields for the dead. When tidying up the loose ends of infinite turmoil and conflict.

That age old familiarity, that song of fatigue settled into his bones as he made his way up the stairs.

A battle fought.

A war won.

A bed calling.

Though very much still in his prime, Azriel was not beyond admitting that the blows landed harder these days.

Madja had patched up the worst of his wounds- a fractured wing, dislocated shoulder, a smattering of broken ribs and a substantial gash in his lower thigh. All courtesy of Hybern’s generals, none of whom went down easy.

To the healer’s dismay, the shadowsinger managed to slip away before she could attend to some of the smaller cuts and gashes.

But Madja knew better than to keep Azriel from leaving once the worst was reckoned with. In five hundred years of injury the shadowsinger had never allowed her to do her work fully.

She was a busy female. And he was certain there were others that needed her more urgently than he ever did.

Azriel had a proclivity for solitude, particularly after warfare, prolonged exposure to large groups of people, or anyone in the universe fussing over him.

He was never very good at being looked after.

A battle for another day.

He was mildly aware that members of the family were planning to get riotously drunk tonight. He managed to share the first half of a well earned bottle with his brothers before disappearing from the room.

All he really wanted was to bathe and sleep for five days straight.

He turned towards the washroom on the second floor of the townhouse to fulfill that intention but his footsteps stilled for a moment.

The washroom door was open wide and someone was sitting on the floor against the far back wall near the tub.

No, not someone.

His shadows hummed in recognition, crooning her name like a dark, sweet lullaby into his ear.

Elain

She was curled up on the tiles, still dressed in her war-torn clothes, staring blankly at her small, blood-splattered hands.

Azriel’s heart tightened to a point of pain within his chest. He lowered his gaze for a moment to keep any trace of that treacherous truth from bleeding through the cool stone fortress of his features.

But war made some things inevitable.

And matters of the heart were often among them.

For a moment Azriel considered continuing his way to the end of the hall to allow her privacy. But Elain lifted her impossibly beautiful eyes to him, and his need to look after her won out over reason.

It always would with this particular female.

So he stepped quietly towards her instead. His shadows tracing each footfall, whispering her name over and over like a prayer to a nameless god-

She looked as battle weary as he himself was. Those stunning chestnut eyes, usually warm with every comfort he had never known and always craved, were empty.

Beyond empty.

Void of the energy to summon even the smallest emotion.

Azriel knew that particular emptiness better than his own name. And somehow, the need in his chest coiled even tighter as he recognized it.

Even here, now, he found himself fighting the urge to wash it all away, take her in his arms and tuck her somewhere safe. Somewhere where she could be allowed to be fierce and delicate and his without pause.

But such things were impossible.

And Elain had proven herself more than capable of taking care of herself today. Which is why he made his way to the threshold and knelt to her.

“Can I get you anything?” he asked quietly.

I will not write specified trait reader inserts (i.e. plus size, particular ethnicity) - my characters are either nameless feminine characters or female OCs. Writing from my own experience enables me to keep the narrative accurate and avoids me accidentally causing offence.

Greetings! I am Elias, also known as Isa (they/he). I’m a disabled, neuroqueer writer of disabled, neuroqueer stories. I’d love to meet more writers, and I’m always happy to join tag games and receive asks.

Fantasy is my first and favourite genre, but I have also written contemporary fiction, sci-fi, and romance—and who knows what genres I will feel inspired to write next. I’m not picky about age groups either and write MG, YA and adult stories. I write in both Dutch (my native language) and English, depending on how the story comes to me.

All of these titles are mostly unserious working titles because I usually only come up with an actually good title near the end of the story (and I also like keeping that a secret 🤫).

Currently working on:

Enby Witch Kid, a middle grade portal fantasy about a 12 year old kid who uses a spell to travel to a different world; drawing from my experience of being autistic and queer but only understanding it as ‘not fitting in’, and dreaming of escaping to a magical world

Nameless Romance, a t4t, autistic 4 autistic, ace 4 ace new adult romance novella about finding your own identity outside of society’s (and specifically parents’) expectations

Wankele machten (Unstable Powers), a fantasy adventure full of morally questionable characters I’m co-writing with my brother, in Dutch; it’s based on backstory for our DnD campaign

On pause:

Labyrinth, a multi-POV YA portal fantasy set in the same universe as Enby Witch Kid; I finished a first draft of this a few years ago, but I’ve since changed my mind about a lot of things and basically need to re-write the whole thing; and it makes more sense to publish my middle grade in this setting first, anyway

Ik wil alleen maar zwemmen/Ik ben Kikker (I only want to swim/I am Frog), a YA contemporary with a nonbinary autistic protagonist about friendship, romance, figuring out your whole life when you’re 17/18, and swimming; these working titles are a song reference and a children’s book reference, respectively

I also have a lot more story ideas that are mostly just collections of notes or random scenes—a sapphic vampire story, genderqueer beauty & the beast, a darker fantasy story set in the Enby Witch Kid/Labyrinth universe, a sequel to Labyrinth… And that’s not even all of them! My brain is a whirlpool of unfinished stories.

WIP Questionnaire

I was originally not going to do this because I already did it for Honored, but then I remembered that I have two other WIPs, so now I'll do it for Faded Daisy.

1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?

Aster's and Nameless's backstory and the Incident™ that happened in the past

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

I'm going to skip this question because I genuinely don't know.

3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?

Hmm... Nameless is probably my favorite from Faded Daisy. I feel really bad for them. Although of course everything that has happened to them is my fault. I am using them as a vessel for symbolism and themes and it's not good for them.

4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?

Probably some horror media honestly. This is the closest thing to horror I have ever written. I don't consume horror so I'm not sure specifically what.

5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?

Figuring out how to actually write it.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

Unfortunately so far I haven't included any animals in it yet, unlike all my other WIPs. But that will probably change. I should probably throw in a rat or two.

7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)

I'm trying to figure out what level of technology to have in this world. I'm considering having trains.

8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?

The outline. I technically wrote the first chapter but I wasn't happy with it so now I am just outlining it.

9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?

The mystery of the Incident™ and the whole horror-adjacent aspect. And hopefully Aster and Nameless's very complicated relationship.

10. What are your hopes for your wip?

I hope I can do my idea justice. I hope maybe people will read it when it's actually completed. I hope people will interpret the themes and symbolism in it. I would love to see fan theories, that would be so cool.

Later it turns out Lan Xichen had confiscated the porn specifically to give to Wangxian. Thanks for any help!

17. Ok, so I wasn't looking very hard in my history, but I can’t seem to find a particular fic. It was specifically Pheonix!wwx, who was imprisoned by the Wen, and no one knew about him even being there until lwj gets captured and put in his room. He says the only reason lwj got put with him is because the Wen are likely going to kill him, like everyone else who got put in wwx's room. Instead, wwx and lwj take care of each other and wwx plans an escape for lwj. I think Meng Yao helps (and I THINK he ends up good,) and lwj promises to come back for wwx. Wwx gives him his crystallized tears to keep him from dying of injuries as he escapes.

The Sunshot campaign is in full swing and I don't remember if wwx escaped himself and lwj picked him up part way or if lwj got him out, but wwx gets out and turns the tides of the war by setting things on fire.

Something happens and wwx ends up nearly dead and lwj uses his last saved tear to save wwx.

18. Hi! I've been looking everywhere for a certain Untamed time travel fanfic. It mostly took place in Lotus Peer. Wei Ying is an inventor. If I'm remembering correctly he has a lot of talismans, and he eventually goes to become a registered talisman maker?

He makes a different spiritual weapon for Madame Yu so she can pass Zidan to Jiang Cheng early, and he makes cool gifts for everyone in his family. I remember that Jiang Cheng got his gift last and it was a second golden core in a cage so that if Core Melting Hand got him again it would break the fake core.

I think there might have also been something about Nie Huisang learning how to use a fan as a weapon? It wasn't complete when I last read it.

A Thousand Words Left Unsaid (Minghao)

I've mentioned this one before hahahaha! It is perhaps my least popular fic. However, to this day, I think this one is still one of my absolute favorite to write. I attempted to be poetic with it, portraying Minghao's life like an empty canvas waiting to be filled with the colors of OC (maybe I failed epically 💀?) and had a lot of fun experimenting with this different style of writing. As a lover and writer of angst, it was also almost everything I dreamed of lol and I'm proud I manifested it >.<

Love Me Out Loud (Mingyu)

On the other end of the spectrum, this is my most popular fic to date. To be frank, I'm still not sure what about it that drew such a large audience because I almost didn't publish it if it weren't for the support of a moot, but I am grateful nonetheless. I think my writing peaked with this fic and I never wrote anything about Mingyu after 💀😅 This fic was a turning point for me in what I decided to write though. Admittedly, I poured a lot of personal feelings and projected a lot of insecurities onto Mingyu and OC 😅 The positive feedback from this fic made me more comfortable in being more vulnerable in my fics and exploring more relevant themes (and not always nice?) of being a young adult.

This drabble series(?) was never intended to get this out of hand, but with the hype from the lovely wonwoorideul @wisteria-woo (I am forever grateful lol) and inspo from the FML comeback (Super specifically), I couldn't help I had to elaborate on my ideas of firebender!wonwoo 🤣😂 The story as of right now is really fragmented and probably makes no sense. If I'm being honest though, I'm not sure if I'm ever going to write a cohesive series out of this (I do have everything plotted out . . .). Writing this thus far has really delighted my inner child and reignited the fun in writing again for me :)

This series was born out of Jeonghan's scenes in the HOT MV! I don't have much to say about this honestly, other than it is really bizarre compared to my other fics 😅 I like to think that most of my stories are realistic fiction, but this falls more into the realm of fantasy/historical/sci-fi. It's a slow WIP, but always really nice coming back to this OTP and the idea that just maybe people are destined for each other in every life 💙

Feu D'Artifice (Vernon)

A snippet of a larger streetracer!au story (yes there's more 💀) highlighting a blooming relationship between racer!Vernon and mechanic!OC amidst blatant social inequities within the racing industry. I got inspiration for this fic from Baekho's song Festival In My Car and I think I was a pretty fresh dolly when I wrote it (at least no longer in denial LOL)? This snippet highlights the thrills of falling for someone for the first time. It's fluffy/crack laced with a little angst at the end! I don't usually ever read back on my own fics, but I do for this one! It makes me giddy and I really do love the comparison between fireworks and falling in love 😅

On the days when Lord Barok van Zieks's presence was required in the judiciary of Scotland Yard, but his apprentice was not invited, a man without a name found himself sometimes given errands to run and sometimes given free time that he had no interest on spending wandering London. Instead, he would often spend it in the van Zieks manor, alone save for the two servants that generally didn't bother him for longer than making sure he remembered to eat something, and the two pets in whose names the lord and his apprentice did everything.

-from that nameless Kaz WIP, which apparently is difficult to get snippets of because apparently the Masked Disciple lives on dick jokes and black humour?? I have no memory of this. There is literally only like two paragraphs in the entire wip where he isn't making a dick joke.

-Witness Us; a song by the Sirinnkata, aka Sagiverse's most famous band! Very fictional, frontmanned by a mary sue of a Vocaloid and the god of darkness. Fun fact: Aoibheann is covering a couple of their songs in DGSblr, because I'm lazy and don't want to write more songs. The Sirinnkata do screwy folk-trance and heavy rock, though.

 They looked him up and down, with the air of someone faintly amused. "You're not local," they remarked, and he winced. Their voice might have been more pleasant next to someone grinding through granite, but not by much. "Gas is free if you answer a riddle, then. Bully for you." He paused, halfway through pulling out his wallet. Riddles were the last thing he wanted to think about right now, right next to anything else at all. Still, free gas didn't come around very often, and he was smart enough. He bit back a sigh. "What's your riddle, then?" He still couldn't see their face, but he felt, quite abruptly, as though they were smiling. "If I make two people out of one, what am I?" That wasn't one he'd heard before. He blinked, pausing for a second, before answering, "A mother with identical twins."

“What is the status of functionality of this circuitry?” He turned towards it, still blindfolded, although it didn’t seem to be bothering him any. “Permanently nonfunctioning. It would not be efficient to attempt to restore it.” She nodded. “Admin Volatile is also permanently nonfunctional,” she answered. It hurt to phrase it like that – everyone around her could say what they liked, that he died or he passed away or he had left them, but the point was that he was gone. What difference did it make to refer to him as nonfunctional? He was still gone, and he wasn’t coming back. “Admin Volatile is… permanently offline?” 00A asked. The cadence in his voice had changed; slower, more hesitant. All right, maybe the programming on his speech was more complex than she’d given him credit for. “That is irregular.” “Tell me about it.” She dropped the circuitboard back where she’d found it, folding her arms and walking back towards her chair. “When did he go offline?” She turned to look at him again as she sat down. He was fixed on her, or appeared to be, his arms folded and shoulders leaning slightly towards her. “Does it matter?” she asked, dryly.

Ok so both you and @quietwingsinthesky asked me about this one (and here's where I show my ass about how disorganized I am lol):

I have three wips under this title. One looks to have been a semi-solid attempt at some sort of "Sam-speaking-Enochian-post-hell" fic (a la "Words Like Glass" by Broken_Cinders on ao3, which I've read like a dozen times.)

They drive north after Bristol for no real reason—although Bobby does find a case—other than to put as much distance between themselves and any and all memories of that fucking city as fast as they possibly can. Without saying that’s what they’re doing, of course. The drive up is quiet. When it's not, they're filling the empty, quiet space with shop-talk and complaints about the weather (because while it had been cold in Bristol, it's cold as hell in Boston, and real fucking cold once they hit Maine.)

Another seems to have been a weird mystery spot just like, ficlet or something idk. It used second person (so this is how I know I was depressed when I wrote it but only lightly, I try different styles when I'm sad but not like drowning levels of sad.) No excerpt because I literally just have a sentence or two of what I was vibing with that day as the description in my docs.

And the third (from what I can gather from my notes) seems to have been like a Dean fic where Dean kept getting jumpscared by various supernatural entities that looked like Sam that would go from pre-series all the way past a post-Swan Song AU):

It wasn't the first hunt he'd been on, nor was it the first haunting. Nor, Dean knew, would it be the last (wasn't even close to being the last.)

And there was nothing particularly special about the hunt either: an abandoned, haunted mill, a nameless specter that clung to the twilight of life and death, and had a passion from ripping off the limbs of anyone that went anywhere near the place.

But there'd been a moment—a shining, flickering, horrific moment—where the gaunt face of the child who'd had his arm torn off sometime around the turn of the past century had looked, in the dying light of day, like Sammy.

And Dean had hesitated.

Yeah idk the title is from a song called "Hand Back Down" from the band The Devil Makes Three (that album its on is one I've listened to more times than I can count) so I think I really just liked the line it's from a lot:
