My first wip wednesday! Last year I finished the game Pentiment and proceeded to fall down a rather healthy deep wikipedia hole. That's when I started working on this! A pixel art version of The Anatomical Zodiac Man page from the illuminated manuscript Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. I have been working on it on/off ever since. Not sure when it'll be finished as it continues to be a massive time commitment. Here are some snippets in the meantime including an ungodly(heh) amount of fancy leaves. Also, did I mention this is all in Illustrator so it's technically a vector!

Rough WIP from March 17th, 2024

whoops guess you're getting a rough design for Apus tonight too lol

The name Apus means "without feet", as apparently these birds were once thought to not have any, and I thought that would fit perfectly into a double peg-leg to match the pirate theme she's got. A bird-of-paradise could be any number of species under that name though, so I've incorporated attributes from several here, particularly the sicklebills and the various species that have those distinct tail feathers, of both the long and curly varieties. I may give her an actual sickle as a secondary weapon too, we'll see!

Even after I decided to add her to Columba's crew, I'd been stumped for a LONG while on what direction to take with the design in general and FINALLY I have one that I really like, especially after giving her the more harpy-ish treatment like Grus's current sketch. Pretty proud of the symbol integration on this one so far too, some are easier than others!

My comic project is a huge mess of WIPs and redesigns right now, but I still couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share a design based on the Acespec Comic Share prompt for today, so here we are! The trouble was picking just one character, but I figured I couldn’t go wrong with little Flicker here :’D I’m still working on their full reference sheet so I’ve compiled some older art and various doodles here instead. Hope you like, and thanks for the opportunity to share! <3

Flicker (any pronouns, they/them is most commonly used) is a sort of guardian spirit, or perhaps a remnant of one. They are awakened from the zodiac portal when Cassie first discovers it on a hill behind her house. Their name was given to them by Cassie as well, as the energy they emit flickers a bit like a candle flame or distant star. Though they have no memory of their past life, Flicker still maintains their prime directive; protect the Starglass (the star in Cassie’s eye). They are able to speak, but only in fragmented or simple words, though they learn a few more as they spend time with Cassie and her friends. Flicker can vary slightly in size, usually hiding in Cassie’s hair or sitting on her shoulder when travelling with her, though they can’t be much bigger than a small kitten. They are at their smallest (and dimmest) when low on energy, and must rest inside the portal to recharge or share some energy from Cassie via the Starglass.

The zodiac portal is what sends Cassie to the Astral Plane in the first place, being the only known connection between the two worlds outside of the Starglass itself. In fact, the portal cannot be activated without Flicker’s energy, and thus they can’t follow Cassie to the Astral Plane once the portal is activated. Instead, Flicker can detect lost spirits on Earth and guide Cassie to them to be rescued, though the times at which they do this are not always convenient, especially at night when the spirits are most active. Flicker will spark when angry or threatened, though the closest thing they have to an attack is blinding their foe with a large flash of light, which does help Cassie escape danger on a few occasions. Despite their small stature, Flicker does their best to keep Cassie safe in whatever way they can.

What's the ro's zodiac signs 👀

in canon? idk something like that doesn't even exist in the MCs world. the equivalent of zodiacs there is what time of the day you were born 🤔well, some of them have zodiacs bc they arent from MCs world, for example chulainn but they never really bothered with that stuff

alas i am probably reading too much into that ask and i will just answer in stereotypes as to what i think all of them would be

Chulainn: hmmm... they're giving leo or scorpio. but i think i would rather go with leo bc it's a fire sign and that definetly fits their personality a lot more

Lys: honestly i think they can only be a virgo. from all the stereotypes i read they are the most diligent LOL also the corresponding tarot card to virgo is the hermit, so that fits :)

Holly: it would have to be another fire sign. personality wise, mayhaps a leo, but overall? i think sagittarius also fits the bill quite well. described as someone seeking knowledge and new things... yeah, that's her.

Elli: just alone from his looks and how he pretends to be someone else, i would go with either a libra or gemini. because he presents himself much like a libra would, but since elli is not like that at all in reality, i think gemini is more fitting

Irydion: EARTH SIGN. and most likely a taurus. all i know is tauruses are stubborn and who else is more stubborn then the most delulu person of the group? i also just think of a straight bull when thinking of a taurus, and idk it just FITS

Junius: hm... it's a bit difficult. i think, gemini would fit him well enough too, since he can well enough switch up, but since he doesn't do a whole 180 like elli, i would go with something else. scorpio has a negative enough reputation, so that goes

in the end i mostly looked at the elemental signs but EHHH

I know you already have your poly routes established, but what would a poly between Zodiac and Ace be like? Would it even work out? Because I have the hilarious mental image of them stressing over the ethics of the whole age gap/teacher-student relationship and MC not giving a shit.
