Wisconsin, Dalles of the St. Croix
The Dalles of the St. Croix River features an L-shaped segment of the St. Croix River gorge cut through Precambrian basalt by meltwater drainage from Glacial Lake Duluth. Erosion, frost, and gravity acting on the bedrock have resulted in vertical cliffs, unusual pinnacle forms, and rocky talus slopes.

Planning Your RV Road Trip from Chicago to Yellowstone
Choosing the Right RV
Selecting the right RV for your RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone is crucial. Whether you own an RV or plan to rent one, ensure it meets your comfort needs and is well-equipped for a long journey. Consider factors such as size, amenities, and fuel efficiency.
Route Planning
Planning your route can save you time and ensure you get all must-see spots. The most common route for an RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone is via I-90 W. This route spans approximately 1,400 miles and takes around 21 hours of driving time. However, you’ll want to break this up into several days to enjoy the trip fully.
Timing Your Trip
The best time for an RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone is during the summer months, from late May to early September. The weather is warm, and all the parks and attractions along the way are open. Be sure to check for any seasonal road closures in Yellowstone, especially if you plan to visit during the shoulder seasons.
Packing Essentials for Your RV Road Trip
Safety and Maintenance Gear
Ensure your RV is equipped with all necessary safety and maintenance gear. This includes a spare tire, jack, tool kit, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and emergency road flares. Regularly check your RV’s oil, brakes, and tires before and during your RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone.
Camping and Cooking Equipment
Pack all the camping essentials like tents, sleeping bags, camping chairs, and a portable grill. For cooking, bring along a stove, utensils, pots, pans, and food storage containers. Remember to stock up on non-perishable food items and drinking water.
Entertainment and Comfort
Long drives can get monotonous, so bring along books, games, and a good playlist to keep everyone entertained. Comfortable clothing, blankets, and pillows are also important for a cozy RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone.
Must-See Stops Along the Way
Madison, Wisconsin
Your first stop could be Madison, Wisconsin. Known for its vibrant culture and beautiful lakes, Madison offers plenty of activities. Visit the Wisconsin State Capitol, take a stroll around the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, or enjoy a day at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
The Dells, Wisconsin
Next, head to the Wisconsin Dells, famous for its water parks and scenic river tours. The Dells offer great family-friendly activities and are a perfect spot to relax and have some fun on your RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Sioux Falls is another great stop with its picturesque Falls Park. Enjoy a walk along the Big Sioux River and explore the historic downtown area. This city provides a refreshing break on your long journey.
Badlands National Park
As you drive through South Dakota, make sure to visit Badlands National Park. The park’s striking landscapes, with its rugged terrain and deep gorges, offer stunning views and excellent hiking opportunities.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
No RV road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone would be complete without a stop at Mount Rushmore. Marvel at the colossal carvings of four U.S. presidents and take a tour of the memorial to learn about its history.

Lizard-Men of Kentucky
Elsewhere in Weird Kentucky, you'll learn of the preacher William Branham, who maintained that the biblical serpent the Garden of Eden wasn't actually a snake but a humanoid lizard-man sent to earth to plaque mankind. And maybe, just maybe, Branham was onto something.
In the October 28, 1878, issue of the Courier-Journal, we find a story of a "Wild Man of the Woods" being captured and placed on public display in Louisville. The humanoid creature was said to be over six feet tall, possessing eyes twice as large as a human's, adn with scalefs for skin. Whatever became of this reptilian wild man is not known.
In 1966, there was a sighting of a bipedal lizard-man in Stephensport, near where Sinking Creek meets the Ohio River. Described as "very amphibious looking" and covered in brownish green scales, the creature appeared outside a home late at night and ran off into the darkness on its hind legs when confronted.
In October 1975, in Trimble County, alongside the Ohio River, there were sightings of a "giant lizard" that, according to eyewitnesses, ran on its hind legs. According to Peter Guttilla, the creature was "about fifteen feet along, had a foot-long forked tongue, and big eyes that bulged something like a frog's. It was dull-white with black-and-white stripes across its body with quarter-size speckles over it."
In the 1990s, Mary Burlington, a paranormal researcher from Wisconsin, became convinced that three-toed reptilian humanoids walk the earth and are more common than people realize. She's gradually been collecting evidence from her own archaeological digs and cave investigations in Kentucky. Her research has taken her on a wide-ranging through ancient Egyptian serpent cults who occupied Kentucky in prehistory, John Swift's southern Ohio, and so on. Burlington has compiled numerous reports of evidence (mostly footprints) of the lizard-man in Kentucky, ranging from Red River Gorge to the Prestonsburg area.
Slimy Creature in the Deep
There's a report that dates back to August 1955, in which a Mrs. Darwin Johnson was attacked by an unknown creature in the Ohio River near Henderson. In full view of a friend she was swimming with, Mrs. Johnson was pulled underwater by something with a large clawed hand that grabbed her by the leg. She wriggled and managed to free herself, only to be grabbed by it again. Finally the two women were able to scare it-whatever it was-away.
Inspection of Mrs. Johnson's leg showed visible claw marks where the slimy hand had seized her, and there was a green stain that reportedly could not be washed off for days.
One of the lizard-men? Or something else?

September marks the beginning of the fall foliage season in the United States, when forests transform into breathtaking canvases of color. From coast to coast, there are numerous destinations that offer a front-row seat to this awe-inspiring spectacle. In this article, we'll explore the 9 best places to see fall foliage in the US in September, where nature's beauty knows no bounds.
Vermont
When it comes to fall foliage, Vermont often tops the list of must-visit destinations. The Green Mountain State lives up to its name, as its rolling hills and dense forests burst into shades of crimson and amber. The drive along Vermont's scenic routes, such as Route 100, is a treat for the senses. In September, the vibrant colors of sugar maples and birch trees are simply mesmerizing.
New Hampshire
Neighboring Vermont, New Hampshire offers its own spectacular display of fall foliage. The White Mountains and the Kancamagus Highway are particularly renowned for their panoramic vistas. The combination of deep reds, vivid oranges, and brilliant yellows against the backdrop of majestic mountains is a sight to behold.
Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee and North Carolina
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, straddling the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, is a treasure trove of fall foliage. In September, the park's diverse range of trees, including oaks, hickories, and maples, create a stunning mosaic of colors. The Clingmans Dome Road offers breathtaking views of this natural spectacle.
Aspen, Colorado
Known for its iconic groves of aspen trees, Aspen, Colorado, is a fall foliage destination that's a cut above the rest. September brings a golden transformation to the mountains surrounding the town. The Maroon Bells, reflected in crystal-clear alpine lakes, surrounded by shimmering aspen leaves, create an enchanting scene that photographers and nature enthusiasts can't resist.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Acadia National Park, situated along the rugged coastline of Maine, is another gem on this list. As summer crowds dissipate, September brings a quieter charm to the park, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the stunning landscapes. The juxtaposition of fiery foliage against the Atlantic Ocean's deep blue is a sight that lingers in the memory.
Door County, Wisconsin
Nestled along Lake Michigan, Door County transforms into a fall wonderland in September. Quaint towns, orchards, and charming lighthouses create an idyllic setting for leaf peeping. The mix of maples, birches, and cherry trees makes this region a kaleidoscope of colors.
Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia come alive with brilliant hues during September. Shenandoah National Park offers an array of hiking trails that lead to stunning overlooks. The Skyline Drive is a must-visit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes adorned in their fall finery.
Upper Peninsula, Michigan
Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a hidden gem for fall foliage enthusiasts. The dense forests, combined with the reflective waters of the Great Lakes, create a picturesque setting. The Porcupine Mountains, often referred to as the "Porkies," offer extensive trails that lead to captivating vistas.
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon and Washington
While the Northeast is often the focal point for fall foliage, the Pacific Northwest has its own unique display. The Columbia River Gorge, straddling the border between Oregon and Washington, bursts into shades of gold and crimson during September. The waterfalls and viewpoints along the Historic Columbia River Highway provide ample opportunities to witness this stunning transformation.

“From plane of light to plane, wings dipping through Geometries and orchids that the sunset builds, Out of the peak's black angularity of shadow, riding The last tumultuous avalanche of Light above pines and the guttural gorge, The hawk comes. His wing Scythes down another day, his motion Is that of the honed steel-edge, we hear The crashless fall of stalks of Time. The head of each stalk is heavy with the gold of our error. Look! Look! he is climbing the last light Who knows neither Time nor error, and under Whose eye, unforgiving, the world, unforgiven, swings Into shadow. Long now, The last thrush is still, the last bat Now cruises in his sharp hieroglyphics. His wisdom Is ancient, too, and immense. The star Is steady, like Plato, over the mountain. If there were no wind we might, we think, hear The earth grind on its axis, or history Drip in darkness like a leaking pipe in the cellar.” - Robert Penn Warren, “The Evening Hawk” (at Onalaska, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoSqBdtvd1q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
