Pretty much most of Love Sick. It's kinda the point of the show. But you can never get away from this one:

Possibly one of the most iconic moments in all BL.

Pretty much all 3 leads swapping both of these "ah ha" moments back and forth in Light On Me

Honorable mention: Someone ELSE in the story's "oh HE'S in love with him?!"

MY TOP 15 BL’S OF 2020

WOW, 2020 was A YEAR. This was hard ranking these but I'll try my best...

1. Where Your Eyes Linger [Korean] - One of my all time favorite series, I think because I really felt the chemistry between the actors in this one. I love the whole bodyguard sort of trope as well and the writing in this was so well done imo. I loved the tension filled moments and build up between the two. I just wanted moreeeee.

2. I Told Sunset About You [Thai] - Season 2 was iffy but season 1 was AMAZING from start to finish. I felt like I watching a movie. The writing, the scenery, the build up for the main pair... it was all so well done.

3. Color Rush [Korean] - The storyline for this BL is just so fun, I really loved the entire premise of this world. The chemistry between the two was nice and Korea does such a good job of building up the connection between their pairings. I'm sad that season 2 dipped a bit in quality and that season 1 felt a tad unfinished, but I still really enjoyed it.

4. Why R U [Thai] - This was a well done BL that was fun, I enjoyed the chemistry between Saint and Zee and I didn't find the drama or the angst overwhelmingly frustating. Plus it had a nice side ship and I liked the love scenes too.

5. 2gether [Thai] - I know people love this one, and I really enjoyed it too. It's perfect for those with a sweet tooth. There are some really great affectionate/sweet moments betweeen the main pairing. It was also the first BL I ever watched (if you don't count waterboyyy way back in the day lol) so it has a soft spot in my heart. But I do think it was a tad too safe for me. I prefer my BL's to have angstier/hotter moments throughout. The ending kiss made up for things, but it was unreastic to not have a proper kiss beore that. JMO.

6. Manner of Death [Thai] - I saw a gif of maxtul from this on tumblr and it's what originally got me into BL's. It spiked my interest. I see those two as the grandfathers of BL because they have been in so many things together, and their connection is so strong. I enjoyed this one a lot because it was a more mature series, and had it's own vibe/feel to it that I really appreciated.

7. TharnType Season 2 [Thai] - Season 2 wasn't as strong as season 1 for me but it was still enjoyable. I was really into Mew/Gulf and their chemistry when I first started watching BL's because it felt so genuine to me, and T+T was one of the first shows to really push the boundaries with the intimacy. Solid season.

8. Your Name Engraved Herein [Taiwan] - This was such a beautiful movie, with a positive ending, and I really loved watching it. It was depressng at times, but overall I just think it was so well done.

9. Mr. Heart [Korean] - Recently rewatched this series and it was so good! So fun and enjoyable. Loved the storyline, it felt pretty unique. I enjoyed the connection between the main two. What brings it down for me a bit is some of the physical moments in the series, like when one of them would hit the other... not for me. But overall, I could look past some of things because I enjoyed the rest of it.

10. Cherry Magic [Japan] - Such a cute and fun series, and definitely one of the most memorable ones for Japan. I had a bit of an issue with the intimacy stuff (they really couldn't even peck on the lips once??? It felt too platonic to me at times) but that aside, it was well written and a great watch.

11. Boy’s Lockdown [Filo] - This is actually my favorite of all the "quarantine" related series we got after Covid. To me, it was cute and fun and we got to see the main two come together in a nice and organic way. It was a good mix of different content.

12. Gaya Sa Pelikula [Filo] - Some cheesey/annoying moments for me, mostly regarding the sister character, but the rest of the series was nicely done. It also sort of felt like a mini movie. It has a slightly different vibe for me from other Filo series. I enjoyed it a lot.

13. Wish You [Korea] - Not my ultimate favorite series from Korea but it was well done. Wish I had more to say about it haha. But it was good.

14. Hello Stranger [Filo] - Another quarantine related story, and for a "web series" where the characters never really met til the end, it was really enjoyable. It was a great depiction of what students were going through during covid and I liked the way they went from scene to scene and did different interactions.

15. Because of You [Taiwan] - Def. some low/cheesey moments in this one as well but it was the first Taiwan series that I saw, so I enjoyed how different it felt compared to the other countries. Taiwan definitely has it's own style too. I liked that there were three couples in this one, and I enjoyed all three storylines.

Honorary Mentions: I'm not going into details with any of these series, overall I found parts of them enjoyable, but there were things I didn't love overall. But still worth checking out.

It’s actually good, but I feel like.. we need more intense conflict, they solved it soo dmn easily. I need more fighttt with tears and sadness *uppss* but still have a good happy ending *plak*

Wish You

7/10 - Both of the main character has almost the same personality, silence and calm… I don’t get it yet, which one is T and B, they switch everytime🥹 the story is about In Su, whose parents don’t want him to be a singer, trying his best to become a singer, I thought that he’ll suicide on the last ep, but he didn’t. It has a happy ending anyway

Cherry Blossom After Winter

8/10 - I like the plot, don’t really like the characters. Th chemistry was good, but… i feel like He Bom is tooooooo feminine😭 I want him to show a little bit of his manly side (in which he did in the last ep and made me screamed like “eee???!”) he is cute, indeed.

Kissable Lips

8.5/10 it has a good storyline, I feel bad for them, it has a sad ending😭 I knew it already but still want to watch lol. I recommend to watch this first and assume the Roommates of Poongduck as their afterlife🥹

8.9/10 I like the plot, it has a cute storyline. The development of the characters to the positive vibes. I don’t quite understand why Tommy needs to go away from Ba Da when he decides to continue his dream? But I’m glad that they are being together at the end. It also has a really beautiful and calming soundtrack💙

To My Star 1&2

10/10😭❤️ I Love it!!! The first one has an interesting story, the plot was too fast but it good. Meanwhile the second season has a more intense section (too much actually lol). Both main leads has the same portion of seme sides🤣 they switched every time, but Ji Woo’s actor claimed that he’s the top lol lol lol (though he became cute enough in season2). Highly recommended this one❤️❤️❤️

6.8/10 well, I feel like… so many holes on the story which needs to be covered. Ya.. it’s a mini series though, but among all mini or short Korean series I have watched, this one needed more clarity. I like the main couple, but.. I ship Eun Kyu and Ji Soo more😭😭😭 I want them to be together lol🤣 sorry not sorry Hae Won😖. Despite my personal taste, it’s still worth to watch✨

Hi!

I’ve been thinking the past few weeks whether there’s a BL series I could try to get my very conservative, very religious mother to watch with me and enjoy. (Who doesn’t need some gay love in their life, especially during Pride Month?!) It would definitely need to be the most PG of PGs; downright asexual would be perfect. But also no dub-con or offputting tropes.

Any thoughts? I settled on Cherry Magic for the G-rated nature paired with characters that have IMO well-fleshed motivations. But we watched the first episode and I think the slapstick Japanese style is a bit of a stretch for her (moreso than the gay content even, possibly). Maybe Blueming?

My first instinct was... Cherry Magic. But I get the Japanese style buy-in is rough. So we’re looking for a western aesthetic, or aura.

Okay, lemme think. Follow me there:

He's Coming To Me - strong religious element (no Christ but perhaps it's still appealing to get a look at a different kind of worship/belief?), peak pining but also pretty tame, good story and production, low heat, just a kiss and no sex scene. Sweet but important coming out sequence. Good plot with murder investigation to appeal where gay romance might not. Shorter run. 

1000 Stars - this one is just a romance, like that's what it is, a romance that happens to be gay. Good story, well acted, lots of interesting tension and plot and mature characters, very pretty, very low heat, but possibly a bit slow for some. Sex scene is played for laughs and not very sexy. Good coming out discussion. If I had a romance reader/movie fan on my hands (like Gone With The Wind or Twilight or 50 Shades or what have you) I’d go with this one. 

Wish You (movie version) - high production, low heat, short run, very tame, and Korea, so more of a western style. It’s not the most logical story though. Kisses but they tame and no sex scene. No coming out, exists in the “Korean BL bubble universe” where everything is just fine and dandy. 

Semantic Error - if she likes romances in general this one is so much fun, it's bright and easy to follow, the chemistry is good, just kisses (although it feels higher heat). But there's no coming out struggle to inspire sympathy, and the teasing bully thing might be off-putting. If I had a fan of contemporary roamnce books or Kdramas, I’d show them this one. 

Light On Me - very very low heat, but the characters are engaging, and it has a classic love triangle, some people really like that. If I had a YA fan I was trying to lure in, I’d show them this one. 

My School President - speaking of low heat sweetness, GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this show Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues. Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but I still ADORE this. And there is a lot to be said for the classics being executed perfectly. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny?

Finally if you can get ahold of it then Restart After Come Back Home might be a better choice than Cherry Magic from Japan, especially if your mum likes cinema. It’s beautifully filmed. Slow going but very pretty. Not slapstick AT ALL. barely gay, very subtle, only one soft kiss. If I had a film buff I was trying to lure in, I’d show them this one. 

If she likes soap operas than you could try Love Sick, and there is a part of me that wants to say SOTUS... both low heat and Arthit practically is ace.
