Why is he here was going wild in my head , he never showed interest in Motorsports really none of them did since you were kids - it seemed to bug but you noticed he got his tooth fixed , chuckling at the idea of him being there , you needed to put on your professional behavior and and get ready for qualifying today especially… against Mad Max even though he’s gonna get to p1 anyways .

“Hey you Ferrari girl !!” You heard Gasly calling you out as he was entering the Ferrari garage , giving you a head pat as you went in to give Kika a big hug welcoming her to the Ferrari pads ~ you might’ve been the youngest being born in 02 but they always treated you well and protected from the horrendous things on media days , enemies on tracks but family off track is a way you can describe it .

they’re always there especially Charles and Carlos and Pierre , you were most close to them you saw them as your brothers in cars. Your brothers were in NHL they had no idea what it was like being in Motorsport especially one that’s more dominated by men …. They never really cared about your passion growing up so you weren’t close to them at all . Quinn was friends with your older brother Bryan and Luke was your best friend in middle school but ever since you moved out to Miami for the tracks and traveling you got to barely speak to him , seeing him through his social media was a way . Not to mention you dated Jack from 8th grade up to 11th grade then again from 2020-2021 as you both reconnected… you broke up due to him not actually caring for you and schedules as you were never off season for summer like him . But to see him become the Center and Captain for his team suprised you despite his poor attitude and lack of understanding people .

Changing gears as well , as you were about to walk away to your car, you saw Jack standing up on the paddock looking down at your number 43 - his half number …. you carried that numbers as it was both good luck to you guys - getting situated in the car wasn’t hard like the first few times during winter test when the car was so bad , it was unexplainable painful to ride , Jack running through your mind still , he never was at your games like you were - you had show off today for once .

Talking a bit to Daniel you were being called back to the pads for interviews along with Charles strutting behind you - you saw Lance with Z and the hockey boys , it all made sense ofc they were friends with Lance … Lance mf stroll , rolling your eyes as Max greets you with a ball coming straight at you . Definitely a way to seek revenge max …. bet , so you chased him into the pads ..

few hours later …..

- you were back at the hotel with Lewis , yes Lewis , you heard me right . We both had an on and off relationship for the past two years … it’s complicated especially with our age gap but end of the day we both know we have each other and understandingly feel calm in the presence of each other’s arms . Tommorow is the big day , not wanting to do anything tonight more , you both ended up falling asleep early , with the bogus of being woken up at 6 am the next morning. ———-

- she’s a very physical player considering the main (the only reason i’ve seen that’s not entirely misogyny) reason women don’t become nhlers is the lack of hitting in women’s leagues and she wants to prove that she can be useful in that aspect of the game

the first time she hits jack he is not expecting it and the hits are consistent until they get to know each other and then she pulls a tiny bit

he’s blushing and kicking his feet and whatever and nico is like you’re fucking delusional kid

- she’s either drafted in 2019, 2020, or 2021

if she’s drafted in 2019, she initially sticks to cole like literal glue and that’s how she meets jack, who of course embarrasses the shit out of himself drunk and says something that happened to be a deep rooted insecurity of hers. she gets over it and during the summer she makes plans with cole again and jacks there, and this time he can handle his alcohol a little better and makes a better impression - when they start hooking up he remembers the night and feels like an ASS cause he now realizes why she avoided him like the plague

for 2020, it’s dawson she meets first, which makes a lot of sense with his role in the au. she becomes really attached to him in a permanent way and the first time they play each other he invites her out. a lot of the devils are confused and he’s like she’s cool i promise!! her on ice persona proves to be strictly for on ice shenanigans and a lot of them kind of feel bad as she’s definitely gotten some backlash for being a girl in the nhl. she’s getting advice from nico and she’s kinda tucked into dawson cause he’s her comfort person when jack comes up and also embarrasses himself cause he falls face first tripping over himself when he sees her out of her gear for the first time

if she’s drafted in 2021, jacks watching the live draft with luke and just as everything’s calming down with the excitement of luke going to the devils, the rangers announce that they’ve chosen you. they play a clip from your women’s league and from what he can see your game and energy is very similar to trevor’s (he hates it) and then later that night he sees the clip of you going around celebrating being the first woman drafted to the nhl and he goes back on that thought and cyber stalks you until your first time playing nj in which he meets you at the blue line for warmups and flirts so badly

- when quinn meets her in the media edit her and jack are already hooking up, and quinn doesn’t really piece that together cause she does a really good job at making fun of jack and avoiding his flirting

but jack?? is so obvious abt it

quinn’s convinced his little brother is getting off to her highlight reels

he only brings it up once she’s gone and he’s basically like ‘ur as red as your jersey and it’s pathetic but that whole ordeal was cute i guess. she’d fix you up,’

- her main adoptees (for some she is their adoptee, but i digress) are quinn, luke, dawson cole, nico, seamus and trevor

quinn is like that one friend who will egg on any and all bad decisions because he feels like she’s the only person who will know when to stop herself and that his stupidity will both be understood but not taken too far

luke is like her little brother, they make fun of each other but they also want what’s best for each other and they will both fight for one another,

dawson is one of her best friends in the world, the first time they connect for a goal once she’s a devil he jumps on her and they fall to the ice and squeeze each other for like a century

he’s like her comfort person and he’s one of the only people that she feels ok just going up to and like.. attack hugging when she’s upset

she is most often found standing under his arm and she’s always stealing ryleigh

cole is her #1 facetime buddy. he’s always on the phone while she’s like doing her hair or something. she has an automatic curling iron and he thinks it’s magic

he’s always her partner for chicken fight at the lake house cause ‘it’s harder to make short legs fall over’

very movie esque ‘duo that’s friends and nobody knows why cause they are so mean to each other’ vibes

nico is another one of her safe people cause after they were introduced in her first season she started going to him when she needed advice

he probably wasn’t the person to ask cause he wasn’t even all that experienced either at that time but regardless of if she took his advice she always felt like he understood

he likes to say that she trained him for his captaincy

he is protective as hell when it comes to her, too and he’s loud about it

seamus is her son. even while she’s a ranger. that is her son. she reaches out to him over instagram and is like how does moyle feel abt sharing?? cause i’m adopting you right now

she will absolutely never admit it but a lot of her game is based off trevor (as well as mm16) he’s very high energy and every time she saw him do something that had literally no place in an nhl game she was like heart eyed

she can’t stand him (affectionate) now that she knows him better but he still inspires her a lot and all of the attention he gets for his style drives her even more

- twitter was in a FRENZY during the asg and the whole all star weekend

since it’s in toronto in 23-24 i can so see her trying to make an impression on mitch cause she wants to talk hockey with him so bad and i’m gonna assume austons there too so jack is butthurt that she’s hanging out with him and at some point he plops next to her on the bench and is like ‘we’re gonna get a goal together and we should plan a celly’

she’s opposed until he’s like ‘fine i’ll just pick you up and make you celly with me then’ and she gives in

but whatever it is they choose to do has people going fucking INSANE on twitter and tiktok and then the next four points they get together they just start making it more and more elaborate and at the last one (y/n goal, jack primary a) he just slides onto his knees and grabs her legs while she’s essentially t posing and yelling

they absolutely have the most energy out of anyone there (i don’t really remember the asg so i don’t even remember if the players even celly?? but i mean 5 pts warrants a scream celly even if it’s a scrimmage)

jack wouldn’t normally be like that for an asg but he’s LOVING the fact that almost all cellys include a hug

she views the all star weekend as one of her favourite nights and weekends off all time cause it’s one of the only times that all of the love she was getting and the love for her and jack overpowered all of the misogynistic keyboard warriors that hate women whining on socials and she had a completely positive weekend where all of her teammates were actually supportive and she felt wanted

commentators DO lose their shit over the two of them having such good chemistry and because commentating in the nhl is so bad i can assume that the words ‘a devil and a ranger’ were said about 28392748374 times that night alone

i want to say she gets mvp for the weekend but knowing the nhl it would be jack

he does not shut up about her during his interviews he’s like ‘she deserves this just as much or more than i do’ and then MORE people go insane cause jack ‘i didn’t know there was a town in new jersey’ hughes is eloquently complementing a teammate during a SCRUM

- she was genuinely so confused writing that comment cause at this point she’d called him j many times 😭 i think he was shocked she said it publicly but that’s all she could bring herself to reply

- assuming her first game in the nhl was before his they would probably meet in the 22-23 playoffs while luke was still in the press box

jack already had a HUGE crush on her and when she meets luke in the parking lot, walking with dawson she’s like !!!!!!! luke !!!!!!!

he’s with jack and jacks kinda thinking to himself like ‘she’s never like !!!!!! jack !!!!!!!!’ and dawson, being dawson invites them for beers at her place and she gets really close with luke that night

they’re giggling like they’re telling each other secrets and dawson is like ‘dude grow a pair and go fucking talk to her’

the next day luke’s texting her on the couch and she’s calling him moosey and her contact name is very incriminating and jacks a GROCUH for the rest of the day

- rangers debut? or devs debut? both??? i’ll do both

her debut with the rangers is so awkward because obviously she was chosen and signed because she’s skilled and deserves her spot

but a lot of them just do not like her

it’s the biggest reason she requested her trade

the only friend she felt that didn’t secretly just hate her guts for existing was igor, who obviously couldn’t help her case much seeing as he’s stuck in the net

during her very first game she was on the third line and her line mates were trying their very best to keep the puck from her cause they didn’t trust her with it

during the third period they’re down by two and she just takes the puck and leaves with it while her centre is obviously trying to set up a play that she was not meant to be a part of

she goes for the five hole and pots it and they don’t even really celly with her other than going behind her to shake hands with the bench

this fixes nothing and they still don’t want her with the puck so the coach moves her up a line and there’s much better chemistry and cooperation despite them still not being her biggest fan

igor gets it to her for a breakaway and she goes bar down with him as the only assist

this is mostly because the other team is also really underestimating her and they feel like they don’t really need to be on her

they’re covering her line mates cause they’re assuming she’ll pass and set up the play especially since her pass was from the goalie

the game goes to a shootout and after the other team misses their third shot the coach just kinda looks at the bench and calls her name

she’s shocked and the arena is dead quiet when she goes out on the ice

like pin drop quiet

she wins them the game and pretty much tells them that if they underestimate her again she’ll just let them lose and that she was signed for a reason and they need to grow tf up

her devs debut goes much more smoothly. it’s definitely a little harder for her to score at this point cause the other teams aren’t underestimating her as much

however the tension with her and jack is at an all time high after that text conversation

the first point she scores is a goal and jack isn’t an assist, it’s bratter and johnny

during the celly she smiles at him cause she feels different than her rangers debut - she feels different with the team and she feels like they actually love her and want her around

he wants so badly to make it up to her for everything he said in his messages and all he can think to do right in that moment is to hold the back of her helmet and knock his visor against hers a little

halfway through the period things between them are going so much better and the chemistry is very much there

she assists on his goal and they recreate the celly from the all star game and then she screams in his face out of pure excitement

he’s smiling at her like she created the world and people go nuts for that whole thing

a little bit into the second period is her wonderwall concert

her and dawson are belting with each other and there’s a gifset that goes around of the two of them singing that pans to jack being all heart eyed for her

the next shift she gets another goal, this one assisted by him and luke and the vibes are absolutely immaculate

during the very same shift luke scores, assisted by her and jack and she jumps onto luke like a proud older sister and shakes jacks shoulders all excitedly

in the final period she scores her last goal to complete the hattrick, assisted solely by jack

that’s when she jumps into his arms and he kinda spins around with her and squeezes her tight so her skates come off the ice a little

dawsons on the ice for this one cause it was mid shift change and he fake gags at them

she sticks her tongue out at him and when he joins the hug jack slides down to his knees and hugs her legs like he did at the asg

dawson screams ‘you two are fucking disgusting’ at the top of his lungs and she throws her head back and laughs

the post game celly includes a lot of beer and a shot for every one of her points (it was a long night) (there was a lot of making out) (and a lot of dawson, luke and johnny being grossed out) (and a lot of nico being a proud dad)

- them being on the same team is so good for everyone involved

when they lose?? hugs on the bench

during the playoffs?? anxious hugs on the bench

being eliminated? you guessed it,

aww i love this! i could totally see him being the one stressing out before a race, while reader is actually the calm one lol! also, sorry for taking a while to answer this, been super busy with training oops.. kinda took this prompt and ran with it, it’s a lil long for a blurb but i hope you like it nonetheless:)

“come on guys! the race starts soon and we need to be down by the last 250 so we can see her finish!” luke frantically walks ahead, while jack, quinn, and the rest of your family and friends follow behind him. with ncaa’s being hosted in new jersey this year, the hughes’ decided to stick around for a bit after their seasons ended t

you’re usually the calm one on race day, while Luke stresses out about the race way more than you do. he just wants everything to go perfectly for you and your team.

the scene in new jersey is wild. so many spectators are out watching the ncaa championships, with people wearing differing team gear as far as the eye can see.

luke finds your team’s support group, and makes a beeline for a close up spot near the finish line to settle down and support you. soon, the entire group is getting themselves ready to watch you race the last and most important race of the year.

“luke, do you want to hold this sign or should i?”

luke turns around to face jack, eyeing the “i’m y/n’s #1 fan” poster in his hands. luke, jack, and quinn had made the posters the night before, breaking the “let’s go incognito” rule the brothers had put in place years ago when going to sporting events.

“yeah I’ll hold it. as long as you hold the team sign” he tells jack, grabbing the poster out of his hand.

just then, and announcement that the race is about to start rings out to the supporters. the hughes family turns to face the jumbotron, where they can see your boat lineup, and the “attention, go!”

immediately, luke looks stressed. you’ve been his biggest supporter for years, and now he’s watching you compete in the ncaa championship alongside his whole family and yours.

as the race goes on, luke and your support group get more and more excited. your boat is doing really well and is in the lead. as your team crosses into the last 250 meters of the race, the cheering erupts. cow bells ringing, people screaming, crowds going crazy for the rowers that are putting everything on the line to win the national championship.

luke, normally a more reserved person, is at the center of the cheering. the hughes brothers are all eagerly cheering you on, holding the posters and ringing the cowbells. they’ve grown up with you, seen how hard you’ve worked for this, and have been your biggest supporters outside of your family. not only is luke super excited and nervous for you, but so is the entire hughes family.

in the midst of all the chaos, your team crosses the finish line first. you’ve won. you’re a national champion.

as you get off the dock and celebrate your win, luke and your families come to congratulate and celebrate with you.

luke picks you up, spins you around, and kisses you mid laugh. you’re elated, getting a national championship and being able to celebrate with your favorite people.

Brodie was a very sensitive yet outgoing kid. His sensitivity wasn't geared in physical pain, but more-so in the ways that made him stand up to the bullies on the playground who picked on the more introverted kids. It was because of this, that he was seen as a leader at the mere age of 4 and also earned him his best friend, Elliot.

As he grew, his teachers and peers favored him for his golden heart and puppy dog smile. His popularity skyrocketed, but he had his mom and dad to thank for the blueprint of his personality. His father, Kenji Sato, was the textbook definition of chivalry and had a very go-getter viewpoint of the world with a good head on his shoulders. His mother, Emily Sato, was always putting others first, walked as if sunshine was beneath her feet, and could make even the coldest of hearts crack a smile. Between his father and mother, Brodie was the golden boy in town. What else would one expect from the county's fire chief and nurse practitioner's boy?

Though he lost his father to a fire when he was only 7, Brodie was forced to grow up as he watched his mother slowly fall apart. At first, she just laid on the couch and stared at the wall for what felt like months on end; Brodie then becoming the caretaker until she was able to go to work. It was strange watching her grieving process change from not wanting to move, to then being nonstop. It felt almost close to normal, that was until she brought home a baby from the hospital. In the blink of an eye, Brodie became a master of many hats; not only stepping up to not let his mom down, but also trying to be the best older brother he could be for the new addition to the Sato family. They were a little broken, but they made it work. And by 'they' I mean Brodie. When Harper needed help on a school project, he was there. When Harper skinned her knee, he was there. Brodie was the constant that showed up when their mother's busy nurse schedule kept her at bay. When the world checked out, Brodie was always there to make sure Harper wasn't alone.

If it wasn't his teammates, then it was Elliot who attempted to get Brodie to live a little. Always doing the right thing and being everyone's walking conscious was tiring after all, but Brodie hadn't strayed from the straight and narrow. Even with the shelved grief and the need to be a good role model and caretaker for Harper, Brodie never stepped out of line. That was, until the senior year homecoming game. Being the captain of the hockey team, it only made sense that he had friends in other sport teams. It was serendipitous that the football team practically paired off with the hockey team in the realm of friendships; the quarterback happening to be none other than Elliot. When they won, the party seemed to get a little out of control. Brodie drank for the first time, but didn't necessarily know when to stop. At least he wasn't as fucked up as his best friend was.

Brodie still plays it back in his head. How he laughed when Elliot mentioned going on the quad together. How Elliot managed to sway him and put the only helmet on him so he can drive. How Elliot's last words were that it was going to be alright, right before they crashed head-on into a tree.

Ultimately, it was just more grief and now guilt that she shelved, but he started to crack. By the time he was in UPenn for his undergrad, Brodie was always high or drunk. He lost his love for hockey, over-trained his body when he barely ate. He became a drug dealer when he dropped out of college, owing someone and then falling into the scheme to pay them back for all the drugs he just 'put on his tab.' He was able to pay the person off, but the money and easy access was too hard to not pass up.

Brodie was able to gather up the strength to get clean.... once.... twice... The relapses hit so hard, he almost gave up before he got into a trade school and became a mechanic. Now living in Cape May, Brodie is trying to navigate being on a tightrope of sobriety under the radar.

EXTRA-EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT HIM!

Brodie is self-destructive. It's a cry for help, but he doesn't want to take the necessary steps on getting help. He's overly cocky, but it's for show. He's used to wearing a mask, seeing that he's been wearing a strong one since he was 7 years of age. Brodie is comical, though he has a tendency of cracking jokes at the wrong time. Fun-loving and a bit of a himbo, the Sato male genuinely is benevolent despite the melancholy hold on his brain. He's protective of those he cares about, though it can be over-bearing. Brodie is dauntless to the degree of craving danger; He loves to drag race in the early AMs of the night life and is actually known for this amongst a specific population of night owls. He tries to keep people at an arm's length because he's petrified of losing people, and tends to hideaway from time to time if it becomes too overwhelming. He loves his coffee black, and though he may seem dull-minded he's actually very street smart. When someone needs help out of a situation, he's a great therapist friend but cannot figure out his own problems. He's just a goofy mess, guys (who really likes women and video games).

Eddie Kingston sighed as Ethan Page tried starting his rental car again. No luck, it kept stalling out. They were stuck in Philadelphia in the middle of the city and needed to be in South NJ in thirty minutes for an Indy show. Both men started to text everyone they knew in Philly who could possibly give them a ride. “I got someone on the way. She’s at work, but is clocking out now.” Eddie didn’t care who got him to the show, he just wanted to fight and get paid.

A beat up Cherokee Jeep pulled up next to Ethan’s car five minutes later. Homicide wasn’t mean or cruel and he didn’t want to make her nervous, so he said he would start it off and she could finish it. He figured afterwards, he could tell her what she did wrong and than try it again.

He started the promo and had to hide his surprised face when Lily took over. She was serious and hard talking about how she loved wrestling and liked having fun with it but Allysin was a bully and that she was going to put her in her place for anyone who had been or is being bullied.

The cameraman called that they were clear and asked if they wanted to run it again.

Lily looked up at him back to smiling waiting for his response. All he could say was “nah we got it.” While thinking maybe they could make this work after all

She talked into her phone that was sitting on her dashboard recording while driving. “Today is the day and I am so excited.” Lily grinned into the camera. “If you don’t know Homicide and I made a bet about who was going to win last weeks game the 76ers or the Nets. “So I’m on the way to pick him up. And he has to wear the 76ers shirt that was delivered to him last night. Even during his match tonight. Lily laughed as she filmed Homicide walking out of his house in the 76ers shirt, rolling his eyes and looking completely annoyed, while she blasted Summer Lovin’ from Grease.

Ten people were shot dead and three others wounded in a “racially motivated” mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket on Saturday, May 14. Law enforcement identified the shooter as Payton Gendron, 18, who drove from 'hours away' in Conklin, New York, to the Tops market on Jefferson Avenue. Vernon Castle played Oxford Tighe, American Agent for Eyzzzsst, the new Hungarian cordial. He is probably most famous for his partnership with his wife, Irene (not Franklin, but Foote). The couple met in 1910 around the same time as The Summer Widowers was gearing up. Vernon arranged an audition for her with Lew Fields, who hired her as a dancer replacement for The Summer Widowers, her first professional appearance.

The final spectacle is back at Atlantic City, on the beach alongside one of the big piers, from which bathers dive into what looks exactly like a real surf.

The Summer Widows premiered out-of-town at New Haven’s Hyperion Theatre on May 26, 1910. It moved on to play the Broadway Theatre, New York City, where it ran for 140 performances before launching a tour (above photo) with some cast changes.

The shear size of The Summer Widowers likely cut down on the show’s options for out-of-town tryouts. However, in June 1909, a year before The Summer Widows opened, Lew Fields and Lee Shubert were asked to leave Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City by owner Erlanger and the producer of the show playing there, Florenz Ziegfeld. The curtain was held while police escorted Mr. and Mrs. Fields and Mr. Shubert from the premises. According to one newspaper, it caused quite a ruckus on the Boardwalk. Ziegfeld later claimed that it was in retaliation for Shubert (an associate of Fields’) doing the same to them at Shubert houses.

The first panorama of The Summer Widowers is set on the Boardwalk in front of the real-life Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel. It was built between 1902-1906, making it very new in 1910. "Blenheim" refers to Blenheim Palace in England, the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill, a grandson of the 7th Duke of Marlborough. Churchill himself visited the hotel in 1916. It has been seen in several films and television shows set in Atlantic City. It was demolished in October 1978.

The fourth panorama of The Summer Widowers is set at the Beach and in the Surf of Atlantic City. As the 1910 photo above testifies, bathing costumes for both men and women were much less abbreviated than they are today. Guide ropes kept non-swimmers from being carried away by the undertow.

NJPW Strong Episode 60 - 10/9/2021; Suzuki Victorious in GCW, West Coast Pro; Tomohiro Ishii v. Vinnie Massaro in West Coast Pro 11/12/2021

This past Saturday was an extra-length episode of NJPW Strong, with matches from Autumn Attack a few weeks ago. This one kinda deserved it, with a title match, a champion v. champion battle and Minoru Suzuki.

The NEVER Openweight Champion defeats the IWGP Juniorheavyweight Champion, also his former stablemate. Following the match, Jay fired some shots at EVIL, reminding everyone who’s in charge of this New Era. Narita failed in beating “The Strongest For The Longest,” “Filthy” Tom Lawlor, but seems to be adopting a much more Shibata-like demeanor now. Fred Rosser tried to tell Suzuki that he was in Rosser’s house, which did not end well for him. This was not the only time this happened over the weekend. More on that below.

Next Saturday’s episode continues the Autumn Attack cycle of episodes; the next two episodes also run against special Saturday editions of AEW Dynamite.

It was another weekend of Minoru Suzuki doing Minoru Suzuki things on the US indies.

On Friday, Suzuki defeated the current indie flavor Daniel Garcia (at the same time a pre-taped match between Garcia v. CM Punk was shown on AEW Rampage. Funny how this keeps happening with Garcia), at West Coast Pro’s 3rd anniversary show, No Leaf Clover. It was a very shoot and strike heavy match that included several refrains of “FUCK YOU YOUNG BOY!” from Suzuki. OH MY. Also on that show, Yuya Uemura & Karl Fredericks teamed with Juicy Finau to defeat D-Rogue, Kevin Blackwood & Vinnie Massaro in the show opener, whilst Clark Connors & Kevin Knight of the LA Dojo fell to the West Coast Wrecking Crew of Royce Isaacs & Jorel Nelson. Slight followup item to all this below. You can see this on-demand on IWTV.

Suzuki took Saturday off, but then returned to Game Changer Wrestling on Sunday to face Joey Janela, he of the Spring Breaks, in the semi-main of The Aftermath. (The Aftermath of what, you ask? Jon Moxley v. Nick Gage for the GCW World title on Saturday’s show, which was a gnarly deathmatch that saw Mox retain.) This was a fun outing, with Suzuki not really taking Janela very seriously throughout the match as they brawled all over the Showboat in Atlantic City, NJ. Post-match, Chris Dickinson said that Suzuki was in “his house” (there’s that phrase again), and said even tho they have a match next weekend in Philadelphia at the NJPW Strong tapings (that’s on Saturday 10/16/2021 at the 2300 Arena), they have “unfinished business” in GCW too, meaning, their Bloodsport match that never happened due to the pandemic. AFAIK Suzuki’s match at Bloodsport 7 has yet to be announced, so this could be that. But also, we never got Suzuki v. Orange Cassidy either, from the postponed Spring Break from that year, and that has yet to be rescheduled too. Suzuki laughed off the “His House” comment too. Honestly, the Saturday card was more engaging than the Sunday one overall, but both are worth watching, which you can on FITE TV.

This coming weekend, Suzuki is at the aforementioned NJPW Strong tapings, which will also have he and Lance Archer in a Philadelphia Street Fight against Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston, the latter making his NJPW (NJoA, really) debut.

Back to Friday at West Coast Pro for a moment, after the opener, Vinnie Massaro cut a promo where he challenged “The Best” from NJPW, saying he was tired of rookies and Young Lions. Well, he’s got it now, as Tomohiro Ishii will face Massaro at West Coast v. The World, on 11/12/2021 at the State Room in SF, CA. The next night, of course, is Battle In The Valley in San Jose (which will also be up against AEW’s Full Gear PPV). Tickets for this are on sale, and this will likely also be on IWTV as well.

An Interview with Alexander Wolfe, the man behind Pedestrian Magazine

Pedestrian is a magazine about the humble art of walking. In this interview, I talked with the man with the plan, Alexander Wolfe, about his love for this much maligned form of transport, his recent expedition from New York to Philadelphia, and the art of conversation.

First off, you recently walked from New York City to Philadelphia over nine days. What made you want to do that?

The initial desire to walk to Philadelphia came out living in New York City during the pandemic. I was bound to my apartment for a few months with little to do but walk around my neighborhood. I've always had a habit of walking around the city, but the pandemic only made these walks longer and longer, which eventually led to a 23 mile journey from my apartment in Brooklyn, to the Bronx, and back.

Around that time I was reading The Roads to Sata by Alan Booth and started contemplating longer, multi-day walks. I needed a change of scenery and found the idea of traveling by foot and living out of a bag very appealing. I felt like I'd developed a process here in the city (go on a walk, take photos, write a newsletter about the walk, repeat) and needed to give myself a challenge. I wanted to lean further into this practice that I've been developing for the last three years.

I'd never considered my walks to be hikes, so it made sense that I'd keep it in an urban setting. Walking to Philadelphia seemed like a no-brainer. What most people don't initially realize is that most of my time was spent walking through New Jersey. I liked the idea of walking in a place that is commonly misrepresented as the "armpit of America" and typically deemed unwalkable. New Jersey is actually a very underrated state. It might be the densest state population-wise, but it's called the Garden State for a reason. Oh yeah, I'd never been to Philadelphia and just really wanted to visit.

How did the walk go? Quite often trips or excursions can be a fair bit different to how you first imagine them… how did the reality of the walk differ from how you thought it was going to be?

I was presented with a new challenge every day. Don't get me wrong, the walk turned out better than I could have ever imagined, but you can never anticipate everything in advance. This was the first time I'd ever walked with a 25 pound bag on my back, let alone the first time I'd walked 9 days in a row. Originally I set out to average 17.75 miles per day, but thanks to my own curiosity, ended up waking 20 miles a day on average. I mapped the entire route a month or two before leaving, but would always deviate from the path in favor of exploring some neighborhood, road, or park that looked appealing. The first day alone ballooned into 27 miles because I got cocky and thought I didn't need to use my map while walking in Manhattan. I learned my lesson and kept my eyes on the map for the rest of the trip.

Another thing I didn't expect was the sensitivity one develops after walking 6-8 hours for days in a row. The smell of exhaust and gasoline becomes more potent. You realize how violently we've shaped the land to build huge highways and abysmal business parks. So much of our infrastructure is built in favor of the car, which makes being a pedestrian incredibly difficult at times. If the built environment didn't present a challenge, it was always the weather, the gnarly blisters on my feet, or my gear malfunctioning. I quickly learned to accept these challenges. It was just another component of the walk.

A lot of times people go for ‘a walk’, they’re seeking out beauty spots or nice scenery—maybe in nature reserves or the countryside, but your walk was cutting through some fairly overlooked places… industrial estates and small towns. Do people miss out by not seeing the whole picture of somewhere? Is just driving through these places to get to the destination sort of cheating?

I wouldn't consider driving to be cheating – it's just another way we alienate ourselves from the world around us. When we drive, we experience the world at a speed that makes it nearly impossible to pay attention to the fine details. Our relationship to place is abstracted, especially thanks to the rise of GPS. We no longer have to have a physical relationship to these towns. We don't even have to remember how to get to them. Driving around in a car reduces these places to nothing more than a label on a map or a convenient place to stop for gas.

It's important to have relationships with the places surrounding you. The walk has given me an intimate experience with the space between New York City and Philadelphia. I know what it looks like, I know how it feels to be there. I can tell you where residents stop hanging New York Yankees flags in favor of Philadelphia Phillies flags. If I'm watching the Soprano's and Tony references Metuchen, NJ then I know exactly what he's talking about. I think to understand a place, such as New York City, it's just as important to understand the places around it. There are generations of people who once called the Big Apple home, but decided to plant their roots in Jersey for one reason or another.

I suppose you could have read about some of these places on Wikipedia, but being there is a completely different thing. Is experiencing stuff first hand important?

It's very important if you actually want to understand a place. It's too easy to create our own narratives without ever visiting a place. I still tried to do my share of research before heading out. I have friends from North Jersey or the Philadelphia Metro and tried to take their opinions with a grain of salt. I spent some time reading about certain towns along the way on Wikipedia or scanned Reddit to get a vibe. I even previewed chunks of the walk on Google Street View to mentally prepare and know if it was actually safe to walk near some of these roads. I could have spent months preparing, but it never would actually replace walking in these small towns and cities. It's so much different when you're on the ground.

I suppose the main reason we’re talking is that you make a magazine based around the idea of walking. How long have you been making Pedestrian? What started it off?

I released the first issue of Pedestrian back in March of 2018. I was living in Ridgewood, Queens at the time and made friends with a guy named Curtis Merkel (I actually met him while out on a walk). He ran a moving business for a few decades and retired. At 84 years old he opened up a tiny little bookshop to keep himself busy. I'd visit him every weekend to check out his books and eventually we'd just get to talking. He'd lived in Ridgewood his entire life and loved to talk about the neighborhood's history. Moving to NYC also introduced me to a thriving community of zine makers. I wanted to share these conversations I'd had with Curtis in print form, so I decided to start a magazine. I invited a few friends to contribute and the rest was history.

Since then, the identity of Pedestrian has become quite fluid. While it started as a magazine, I would now describe Pedestrian as my own practice. It's a platform that allows me to collaborate with others, produce magazines, write newsletters, go on these long multi-day walks, and produce t-shirts. I have found this configuration gives me the most creative freedom.

A lot of your magazine is about meeting people and striking up conversations. Is this a lost art these days?

I don't know if it's a lost art per se, but there's less incentive to reach out and talk with strangers these days. Thanks to the rise of social media it's just getting easier and easier to stay within our own "bubbles." Starting Pedestrian, in a way, was an excuse for me to speak with those I typically wouldn't reach. It's amazing how having a publication kind of takes the fear out of speaking with strangers. You can do anything when you have intention.

Although walking is something most people do, is it overlooked as an activity? It seems it’s mostly seen as an inconvenience, rather than a hobby in itself.

It depends where you live. In New York City, for example, walking is a part of the culture. The city is built in such a way that makes walking a viable means of transportation. And if you can't walk to your destination, you're likely walking to a subway or a bus. Where I'm from in Iowa, walking is very inconvenient. Everything is spaced out, which makes walking anywhere very difficult. It’s not that people don’t want to walk, it’s just the way we’ve built certain communities has made it very hard to enjoy. It makes people think walking is very inconvenient.

I’m here in Iowa until August and it’s been interesting to walk a place that is so reliant on cars. The other day I did a 13.5 walk around the city. There’s nothing here stopping you from walking (unless the heat gets you. Technically we’re in the middle of a drought. It’s been incredibly hot as of late), and there’s plenty of sidewalk. I think it’s mostly just a mindset people have to develop. It doesn’t matter how many miles you walk, it’s just about getting out there. Your mental health will thank you and you might even learn something new about your surroundings along the way.

Walking is maybe the antithesis to the internet, but Pedestrian also has a decent presence on the World Wide Web, and you regularly send newsletters and... er... partake in the digital world. How do you balance the real world with the matrix?

It’s a relationship I’m constantly reevaluating. I’m not a master of balancing the two yet, but I’m slowly building habits that will protect my time. I often daydream of abandoning social media altogether and picking up a flip phone. I obviously haven’t done that yet, so in the meantime, I’m investing a lot of time in my newsletter. Sending out a newsletter is a much more thoughtful, intimate, and slow experience...kind of like the way I approach my walks out in the world. I understand that the web is a tool and I’m not sure the Philly walk would have gotten the same amount of attention had I not had an Instagram account. It’s cliche, but everything in moderation, right? I try not to take it so seriously.

What next for Pedestrian?

The Philly walk was such a great success and I’d like to keep that momentum going. Later in September I have another big, big walk planned, but I have yet to announce the route. Look for an announcement sometime next month. This one will be a bit longer and involve 3 different cities. I can’t wait.

Once winter hits I’m going to buckle down and produce a proper book for the Philly walk that will include all my writing and photos I took along the journey. I’m already excited to share the finished product with the world. Stay tuned.

Final question, what are your walking shoes of choice? And what's your soundtrack? Are earphones advised for long walks, or do you prefer the ambient sounds of the streets?

I’m a big fan of Hoka Clifton’s. I wore them throughout the entire Philly walk and have two pairs in my closet. At this point, Hoka should probably pay me for how much business I send their way. I’m always recommending them.

I prefer not to wear headphones and just listen to the ambient sounds of the street. More often than not, I find wearing headphones to be a bit distracting and it takes me out of the present moment. Although, I’ll admit I have been trying to introduce music into my walking once again, but few tracks make the cut. Lately Andrew Wasylyk’s Last Sunbeams of Childhood has been on repeat. There’s something about that track...

Last week, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo was summarily defenestrated, resigning in disgrace after facing mounting pressure from his own party, which made clear at the level of the state legislature that he would be removed from power via impeachment if necessary. This represents a precipitous fall from grace for the former Empire State heavyweight - last year saw Cuomo lauded and showered in accolades, with an Emmy awarded for his COVID press briefings, a $5,000,000+ book deal chronicling his leadership during the period, and a headline spot on the first night of the DNC where the same party now calling for his scalp praised him as a hero and held him up as an exemplar of responsible pandemic management. He had been floated as a potential presidential candidate and amassed an enthusiastic following of self-described 'Cuomosexuals' - including many among the media elite - who embraced a performative infatuation with the man in Albany. He was heralded as perhaps the most popular politician in the country as the press and political establishment cheered his pandemic response. This all went out the window when NY AG Letitia James announced her investigation had determined Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women, and virtually everyone of influence in his support base distanced themselves and called for his resignation

The core problem here is that Cuomo's pandemic response was catastrophically terrible from the start and the claims of sexual harassment were wildly overblown as part of a political takedown

Included among that tally of 11 are women who allege, for instance, that Cuomo committed such infractions as using comical terminology like “mingle mamas”. Another person complained about his telling her that she made wearing an elaborate Personal Protective Gear gown “look good” at a public COVID press conference. A guest at a wedding, with no ties to the state government, reported that Cuomo "asked if he could kiss her". An aide claimed the Governor called her "sweetheart" and once kissed her hand. The most vocal accuser, Charlotte Bennett - who was previously sued for coordinating with another student to file knowingly fabricated sexual misconduct claims in college, both of which were withdrawn after being discredited through exculpatory evidence (a recording and text messages) - accused the Governor of making her do push-ups as an example of inappropriate office conduct; her Insta story at the time read “Life complete. [Gov. Cuomo] challenged me to a push-up competition”

This is pretty farcical. The Governor's office has rebutted the allegations in detail, but the media pressure remained overwhelming and Cuomo agreed to resign, denying the substantive allegations while issuing a defeated thank-you to his accusers in his final statement. The man who, just months prior, had been on top of the world was run out of office by a concerted outrage campaign based on functionally nothing

Meanwhile, the pandemic response that he had received such fawning praise for had - the entire time - been an egregious failure. Of all states, NY has the #2 deaths per capita from COVID (after NJ, many of whom work in NY), in significant part due to Cuomo's catastrophic decision making, including reluctance to implement initial lockdown measures, dysfunction between the state and city governments (attributed partially to Cuomo's rivalry w/ NYC mayor), supply shortages due to ignoring NY's pandemic response plan, and an Executive Order forcing nursing homes (filled with the most vulnerable citizens in the state) to take in over 9,000 active COVID-19 patients. Cuomo then overcompensated for his initial incompetence by making the state one of the most restrictive in the nation, leading to one of the worst economic outcomes of the pandemic. All of this - including the Cuomo administration's hiding of nursing home deaths - was well known the entire time Cuomo was being given trophies and multi-million book deals, given lavish media treatment (including special segments with his own brother, an obvious conflict of interest), and being fêted by the entire Democratic Party at the DNC as he boasted of his success in dealing with what he called, out of mind-numbing 'anti-racist' pandering, "the European virus"

…

So the take-away I'm left with is: performance, facts, reality, behavior simply do not matter in contemporary politics. All that matters is narrative and spin. Which means all that matters is how the media-activist complex decides to cover you. If the media chooses to hold you up as a heroic foil to a President they despise, you will be flooded with accolades and prestige even if you have among the worst outcomes of your peers; if that's no longer necessary and they want you out for being insufficiently progressive and standing in the way of female candidates they prefer, you will be ran out of town on a rail. And so, a completely unaccountable, unelected, and unrepresentative media-activist complex holds the reins of power and determines the fate of elected officials to the point that they frequently have the final say
