Wolfgang Weingart was born in Germany in 1941. He is a pioneering figure in graphic design and typography. He studied typography at the Basel School of Design in Switzerland, where he was influenced by famous designers such as Emil Ruder. Weingart's work in graphic design and typography is characterized by its fusion of traditional Swiss typography with experimental and expressive elements. His designs often feature bold compositions, dynamic layouts, and playful use of type, demonstrating a mastery of both form and function. His influential contributions have left a lasting impact on the field, particularly within the New Wave design movement, where personal expression and artistic experimentation are central themes.

He's more associated with a restrained approach to colour usage in his designs. While he does incorporate colour into his work, his palette tends to be more subdued and selective compared to some other designers. Personally, I am a big fan of this and would probably end up doing work similar to his.

Week 11. Postmodernism. 

Week 11's lesson was on a new topic called Postmodernism. I discovered new knowledge that now helps me to add more innovation and experimentation to my practice.

It seems to me that the ability to experiment and go beyond the usual rules of graphic design is an art that takes many years to learn. I got this feeling during our activity, when we in pairs had to create a poster that was strikingly extraordinary (Figure 1).

After this lesson, I wanted to learn more about the phenomenon of postmodernism and came across a designer like April Greiman, known as the queen of the New Wave. Her work showed me that design can not only be right, but can also be created under the "cocktail principle" (Figure2). In her work, various elements like figures and photos seem to float and rotate slowly within a sheet. The large-pixel texture emphasizes the fragmentation of the forms, creating a 'cocktail' effect.

After studying this phenomenon, I realised that postmodernism is a kind of "chaos of the universe". With this style we can combine elements from different corners of the universe to try to create a new picture of the world, a new "text", and do it together with the viewer.

In my practice I now focus on the fact that boundaries are not the end but the beginning of the new. That is, my task is to give the viewer a sense of freedom through my design, but doing the work not with the aim of mixing things up, but with each compositional element, as well as its position in relation to other graphic elements, being carefully considered and calibrated (Figure3).
