Wonjjang / 원쨩

is a South Korean rapper and because I know nothing about her besides her liking anime/manga? (I think :D) this introduction will be based on her discography! She has released a lot of music already, I don’t understand how she’s not more known (and I’m only finding her now :D). She has a really cool deep voice and isn’t afraid to make music a little crazily – with awesome results!

Following is a chronological list of her releases including pictures and my excitement :D Songrecs are bold.

2017.11.30: She released her first mixtape “Happy mil 05o - ~~~Oh! Taku's Fantasy~~~” on Soundcloud. It used to have more tracks, but now only 3 are left. It’s not really bad rap-wise but it gets better! There is also a music video.

2018.08.20: Her second Soundcloud-mixtape “˚✧₊⁎❝믿음 사랑 소망❝᷀ົཽ⁎⁺˳✧”. It features D-Hack and Errday Jinju. One song is prod. by Laptopboyboy.

2019.06.09: Wonjjang’s first single “먹잠누티222+ (feat. kitsyojii)” with video is released.

2019.12.27: LNBC announces Wonjjang as their new member. LNBC is a khh label; their name stands for laybacknchill. The other artists under them are Chaboom, Marginchoi, O.I, Leebido, kitsyojii, Kaogaii, HD BL4CK. (I’ve heard the name before and most of the artists, but I didn’t know this was a label. I thought all the artists were unsigned lol. They should do a better job at promotions how can Wonjjang be so unknown when she’s so good AND signed…)

2019.12.30: Wonjjang releases her first EP “종합+병원”. It features kitsyojii and Errday Jinju.

2020.05.05: Her second EP “Wonjjang in Wonderland” is released. It features ChaMane, kitsyojii, and Errday Jinju. From here on, I feel like saying “this is my favorite” about every release :D Song recommendation: weak (약). The lyrics are sad, but the beat and her rap slap. It sounds like it wasn’t mixed cleanly but it must be on purpose because the bass comes out so nice 😍

2020.12.04: Collab double single “Go Blank” with labelmate O.I (also a female rapper!). Now this goes hard!! Recommendation: Go Blank and always make sure to play all the music on headphones or speakers that can play bass properly!

2021.05.30: Collab EP “Uncanny Valley” with a male rapper called wholelotta 6o. We are reaching peak crazy energy everything noise party and alllll the bass! Song recommendation: Be Aliveee and that’s what it sounds like!

2021.07.24: Single “N!KE” is released.

2021.09.24: EP “My youth story is wrong as I expected” with labelmate and producer HD BL4CK. And finally I found her! I loved her voice from the start. This EP is a little calmer (idk genres but I’m sure there’s a name for it :D) and she sings more, still I love it. And of course HD BL4CK is reliably great as always. Song recommendation: Go to Hell (hell로).

Lastly, Wonjjang has applied for SMTM10. I don’t have high hopes because usually, better-known rappers are chosen BUT she’s really good and her being a woman with good looks might help too. I hope she gets a little bit of screen time so some more people can discover her! Good luck!! :)

Finallyyyyy my LBNC label info post. I’ve been hoping to find motivation for it for a long time and tonight is the night let’s go. It may be long and much blabla but idc, you can scroll past if you’re not interested :D

Rapper Chaboom founded the label Layback Records first, and then renamed it to LayBackNChill (LBNC) later. The motto is “to live a laid-back life by making laid-back music between people who have a good relationship”.

This year they are my favorite crew (next to my other favorite crews wysd and d.o.g) and here are some reasons why

see how I just called them a crew when they are actually a label? They are more like a crew. All of them seem close with each other and they all release (very fire) collab albums between 2 or more members regularly. It feels so natural in a time where most labels‘ actions and signings are (understandably) business decisions.

even before I knew their motto I would have described them like that. Most of the members are “old” but haven’t “made it” and while I think that must be a huge pressure, they seem just really chill about everything, the music doesn’t sound try-hard at all. It’s just consistently good music.

bc of most member’s ages I personally can identify well with them :P

the music is so good obviously. It’s a group where I regularly listen to music of almost every member. This is personal again but I just like trap I think, and most older rappers do boombap, and that’s just not as exciting for me. (or at least most of the recent stuff I’ve been listening to was trap. Haven’t had time to check all their old music it’s so much :D)

Chaboom did what few hiphop labels (and by that I mean labels that actually release mostly rap and hiphop and not all other kinds of mixed stuff) achieved and signed women, 2 of them. More abt them and the other members now.

drop the bit ep.1 opinions

for those who don’t know, drop the bit is a survival/audition show hosted by yng&rich records, with superbee, uneducated kid, and homies as the judges. the winner gets bitcoin i think. i’m not sure about the system/rules because i was too lazy to try and listen to that part, but they explain it at the beginning of the first episode. link in source!

about rappers i already knew: - greenbeige was eliminated :( they didn’t show his performance, idk what went wrong :( - khan!! i remember why i supported him so much. his rap is perfect. best performance imo. glad he passed :D - cherryboy17. he's a funny guy, a bit of a comedian but still raps well. he did well, everyone impressed, thumbs up :D - takuwa - imo did better than last time i heard of him (smtm application). he dropped the "cute" visual style, i guess bc it wouldn't have fit the program? he passed:) - wonjjang's voice cracked, so she was eliminated :((( it's too bad, i can't wait for people to finally discover her :( - 유명한아이 (famous kid) - i know her from soundcloud, she has the dadadada style i love and passed yayyy let's get it! - astral swaggy - i never paid much attention to him but he's good! he passed :) - yoboy. LBNC maknae!! more a singer than a rapper. acoustic guitar beat. eliminated because of that. but such a nice song. if this was smtm, it would’ve been counting stars 2 - roh yunha - did well - as everyone, including me, expected :D all pass.

impressive rappers i didn't know before: (the rapnames may be misspelled because they are only shown in hangeul on the show) - iceboy - he still has to learn, but potential - oksinoba - his voice sounds really good. wish he used less english - kimitae and [can't read bc of his jacket] - a duo. hard to tell because 1 min is too short for 2 people, but they sounded good imo. - max kim - more of a boombap style. somehow he reminds me of swings :D adjusts his rap to the beat really well, unlike a lot of other contestants. - baeni/benny/veni/... - rhyme and flow wonderfulll! i hope she gets far:) - kerrigan may - same! i didn't know her, but she's already quite famous.

generally plus: - i like that they said they didn't let women pass just bc they're women, and would hold female rappers to the same standards as male rappers. - also they failed someone for having a beat that is too acoustic, even though they liked the performance a lot - i like that in a show about rap and hiphop, they focus on that. - the screentime is more balanced between contestants. everyone who passed gets a few seconds of the judges’ opinions and praise, and a short extra interview to say a few things. BIG plus!

generally minus: - they were too impressed with some rappers who weren't that good? - especially when it comes to bad english, missing rhymes, meaningless repetitive lyrics...

some recent music discoveries

i talked about most of them already but i just want to stress and say again how good they are and talk a little more :D

(links will be yt because i think it’s most accessible for everyone, but if anyone who reads this ever uses my music links, feel free to let me know what you prefer or use) (if you care: all of them have some hiphop style unless stated otherwise)

- kim nongmill - 소년챔프. 8 songs, 21:31 min, 2020. i found this because he released HBGS feat with skinny brown which was SO GOOD and checked out more and discovered this album is also SO GOOD. a fan commented how he has a good sense for music and it’s true. i don’t know how to explain it. all the songs are good, and producer doplamingo (on all songs) does an amazing job. kim nongmill (who also goes by his real name oh damryul) is known for being a funny guy bc he always forgets his lyrics on shows, but his music is seriously good. songrec: For what - Intro. (start there and listen to the rest too :P)

- ashnikko - panic attacks in paradise / maggots. 2 songs, 5:23 min, 2021. an acoustic guitar and a rock song. this is off topic haha but i listen to her a lot and her songs are just great. what teenage me wished avril lavigne had become instead of what happened around the time she started wearing pink xD (now i don’t care of course, just this is good). note: explicit lyrics.

- i could list all LBNC albums i’ve been discovering but will limit it on the latest one: kitsyojii - HDISMYPRODUCER. 11 songs, 33:05 min, 2022. this may get long, ok, so first off, i decided i wasn’t going to be a fan of kitsyojii and kaogaii because i don’t exactly remember haha but they pick fights with younger, more successful rappers bc they’re jealous and i thought that was childish/lame. however, HD BL4CK has become one of my favorite producers recently, his music is always perfectly on point my taste, and he has so much music (i haven’t even listened to everything yet), often collaborating with an artist on a full album (like this one (even though he’s not a main artist he produced all songs), previously also with other LBNC members wonjjang and leebido), and his solo albums (where he also raps! rapped?) always have top notch featurings even though i think nobody knows him. a true hidden gem in khh. anyway, bc of him i listened, and as expected, this album is just great, perfect, totally my taste, and i have to give credit to kitsyojii too, obviously. will have to see if they’ve done sth together before and listen to everything every day. songrecs: 삼땡 (33) (feat. since), it’s about being in your 30s and childish(?) and still not having accomplished much? yeah it’s my anthem xD; fuckboy recognize hoe (feat. rakon) i love the effect they put on kitsyojii’s voice it sounds so good but am scared to look at the lyrics so i just listen :P ; 걸교 (cut off) (feat. errday), errday (/errday jinju) is really underrated btw, nice rap nice beat nice hook nice everything. weaknesses: don mills’ and koonta’s parts. idk what they’re doing but imo it doesn’t fit well xD

- lil sunder11 - 11. 11 songs, 27:30 min, 2020. chill little emo rap/singing rap songs, almost pop. i don’t know why i didn’t check it out sooner, i’ve listened to lamborghini door so many times, it’s a top khh soundcloud song. songrecs: lamborghini door (feat. cid cyan), tears #dontworry. he has an excellent sense for (making) melodies, which in the end, i think i admire most among all music elements/skills generally because i think to me it would be the hardest to come up with.

- lil sunder11 - love was pain. 8 songs, 19:45 min, 2022. this is even more singer-songwriter than the last album and the soft little background beats (rhythm elements? drums?) are even less hiphop than on the album before. you could call it acoustic singer-songwriter pop. i’m usually not soo much into that but. his melodiiies. songrec: city light. the “lalalalalalalaaaala” aaah <3

- heo daniel - hideournight. 13 songs, 40:39 min, 2022. if i say pop-rock with church elements you will think “eh what, sounds boring” so.. just listen to it. he lists older rock bands as his influences but i hear cjamm and yanghongwon. he also had panda gomm produce one of his songs and yescoba featuring so i think i heard correctly :P i talked about the album here. heo daniel’s q&a here. a wonderful piece of art and the songs go together so well. favorites: dusk, gallery, solo.

- i said i was going to do only one LBNC album but just quickly leebido - made in abyss. 5 songs, 15:20 min, 2022. almost all feats and prods LBNC (except chamane) they are so close i willlll make a label post soon.

- lobonabeat! - lobonatune2¡. 7 songs, 15:01 min, 2022. i almost didn’t listen more closely but luckily skinny brown (i think) posted 5 secs of the best melody in his story (songrec: trip!. sbnim bestest taste always <33). lobonabeat! has a unique voice and the soft little bass hugs my soul <3 this.. kind of trap?? is always the same but i love it every time, i don’t care :D there’s also a song with zene the zilla and coogie features ah i wish coogie did this style more <3

- 1300 - oldboy. 1 song, 2:24 min, 2022. 1300 is a korean-australian crew and the song is about the movie oldboy? i don’t get it really oops but the song is really good. can’t wait to hear more from them.

that’s pretty much it :D tmi, among my top 50 songs in the past 4 weeks, there are only 4 that aren’t in here (victon - mayday, way ched - spin the block (feat. paul blanco, 365lit, lil gimchi), minit - all day war (feat. brown tigger, jo gwangil), homies - we need more) :D

Jigap feat. Earboy and HessClifF: a typical 2020 hiphop song? Fast rap, with rapped (not sung) hook. It’s not GI$T’s usual style but a very good song!

How do I look: the first song off his album “Emotion”. Did I mention all his songs are good? It’s really just an example – take the 31 minutes to listen to the whole album and you will not be disappointed. This is his own sound: the genre could be described as pop, but his singing-rap (even though everybody does that now) is very unique. For example, there is no obvious autotune :D And a lot of piano and some acoustic guitar.

For Me feat. Skinny Brown off his album “He”: Same, his own style and a typical GI$T song. Skinny Brown joins with his style (except he motherlovingly kept it non-explicit :D) and the mix is, well, awesome. I hope they collab more in the future :) (chances are good I think:)))
