How to write experience with zine, secret santa, writing projects etc. to your resume
All work is work. All work is valid to your resume. You have deadlines to follow, you have to manage your own time, you have specific requirements you need to respect and if you are in the mod team you have to organize, market, manage etc.
Here’s guide how to add hobby projects into your resume as a work experience, as that’s what it is. I will concentrate on zine experience as modern zines are pretty much professionally made and organized projects, whether the result is a printed or a PDF book.
General tips
- Always add international there, as all online projects WILL have people all around the world (unless it’s a very underground fandom project). Even if you had just one foreigner there, it’s an international project. Sounds fancy and resume’s purpose is to make mundane things sound really fancy.
- If it’s a fanfic zine, you can use a novel anthology.
- If possible, add the number of participants. It’s a really good polish to your reputation if you can say that you organized a project with 60 international participant than just say you organized a random event.
- For Secret Santa and other non-zine events, you can use these same examples. I have written to my resume Secret Santa event hosting as “Event organizer, an international online art project with 100 participants, 2022″.
- Your drawing and writing time is work, too. You can utilize these in your resume.
- You CAN and SHOULD act as each others’ referee in resume and work application from events and zines! Includes beta readers and their work!

How to Tell More About Your Fandom Project(s) To Normal People
If you are asked to tell more about the project you participated in, don’t worry. You don’t have to start to explain what a zine is, what shipping is, why these characters are kissing steamily, or why the fic you wrote was explicit hurt-comfort otp fic.
You can simply use general terms: Zine = a book or an anthology project. Secret Santa = an online art or writing project Fan video = a full video made for purpose X by editing or drawing fully.
“I participated as an artist/author to a zine of my OTP and drew/wrote this kind of art of them” = I participated in an international art book project/anthology book project. I applied and was selected from many applicants*. The book was put together in X month by multiple people and it was printed. I’m familiar with print requirements, time management, following dead lines and managing my own work.”
*If there was no application process but the event was open for all, you don’t have to speak about the application process at all. If asked, you can say that the event called for artists/authors and I decided to join in.
What you want to emphasis, no matter what you did, is that you can manage your own time, you can follow dead lines and you can follow given requirements. You wouldn’t believe how much there are people at paid jobs who can’t manage their time, hassle with dead lines and require lots of guidance. If you can honestly do something you are asked by a deadline given by the needed requirements - like write a 1500 word fic in 3 months - that IS an asset! You DID manage your time, manage yourself and respected the dead line. As remote work is increasing in many fields, employees who can do those three important things are gold nuggets to companies.
If you are in a mod position, you want to emphasis that you can lead and manage projects, communicate with everyone, keep up with dead lines and schedules, organize, and think also what risks might appear and how to prevent or handle them (like in zine; how many artists/authors might drop out and what do we do in that case?).
What every business and employer needs, no matter what the field, is good communication, proofreading, social media management and marketing, content creators, graphic designs, web designs, and marketing materials.
And those, my friends, are what every single zine project and fandom event contains.

I’ve been doing work experience at Atlassian since Monday and it’s been awesome so far! I’m on the automation team (i.e the IFTT-esque automation system that’s usable in Jira, Confluence etc) for the week.
Monday was mostly getting my computer and dev environment set up, but I learned heaps about company processes and standards along the way. I also attended the team’s daily standup which is an interesting tradition at software companies, it seems to be helpful in making sure everyone’s on the same page at the start(ish) of each day. The view is amazing and I can (almost sorta) see my school from where I sit which is pretty cool. Lunch was diy sandwiches with every possible ingredient under the sun, courtesy of the free cafeteria (!!!)
I was there essentially 9-5 which I’m gonna be honest I’m entirely unfamiliar with but it actually flies by doing interesting things (cough. school)

^ Won a couple games of Jack Change It in study!!
Made some notes, did the coursework for my online work experince (which is on tomorrow... bleh) and that's about it. Didn't study today because my friend (who was away the last 2 days) called and we talked for 40 mins, I procrastinated, and went to see a house with my parents, then did the work experince coursework.
Not too bad of a day. Not busy but not lazy either. Somewhere in the very grey area. Still, I've got to get back into routine and keep my habits up too.
Also I've got some questions from the How Deep Will You Go card game and I'm going to show my friend some of those questions tomorrow morning!! (Some of those are DEEP)
Here's a teaser for you: (tw: mention of death)
Level 1: Icebreakers
Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?
Level 2: Confessions
What's your most treasured memory?
Level 3: Getting Deep
What is the worst non-physical pain you've ever felt?

WORK EXPERIENCE UPDATE.
I have officially completed my 30 hours of work experience! I apologise that I barely posted about it but i have been having severe problems with Tumblr in that my posts wont post.
I completed four programmes in total, the programmes being broadcast media, psychology, law and journalism. I enjoyed doing these programmes and have gained a better knowledge of the sectors.

if I ever even think about working with children under 13 again I’m going to need to be hit round the head.
the amount of energy that I have been drained of just in a week of work experience at my old primary school is insane and feels genuinely damaging to my mental health.
if I ever say I’m going to work with kids again, I need some one to shake me.

My Permenant Job @ Deloitte was unfairly terminated with immediate effect Within Few Months - Refugee Says!
"I joined #Deloitte as a business support analyst. This was after several years of excitement and several attempts across nearly 5 years to secure a role within their team or any role within my discipline.
Each attempt took me days to practice & seek support to prepare for the process & not to mention the frustration after being unsuccessful.
The role is for school leavers and I have a degree in #Accounting & #Finance from #CardiffMetropolitanUniversity & I am overqualified for the role.
After a few weeks @ Deloitte in #Cardiff office, I held a ten minutes online meeting with #HywelJones just to introduce myself and then I was told to not approach him again at all.
After a few weeks, I realized that someone is unhappy with my presence with the team and start causing indirect disruption to me. The following have been noted during just the first two months:
1- Some of my works were deliberately deleted & I proved to them, I have done the work,
2- Enormous pressure by the team leader, #MeganRelph, and another person U2,
3- Singled me out on a daily basis
4- Provided incorrect instructions
6- Prolonged meeting around 60 minutes for a very basic thing, 60 minutes of repetition for the same thing
7- I was asked to send my completed work to new joiners who were 2 -3 weeks in Deloitte to peer review my work
8- Extremely low or no work were assigned to me and I was actively helping others,
In the end, I realized all the above were set up for dismissing me. One or all of the following three people together set up the #unfairdismissal process: Hywel Jones, Meg Relph, and #JosieHancox.
I received a call from #CatherineParsons states the following:
1-“Deloitte does not have 24/7 support to support you”
2-“You are defensive and do not take feedback on board”
2-“I have my own people I fully trust,
3-“I trust them and what they reflected about you is correct"
4-“I will not discuss anything or do not want to hear anything from you"
I expressed my concerns to a director through the confidential #speakup platform and told her, "No matter what I do, it seems a matter of weeks for my dismissal with full of baseless accusations".
I collected feedback from requesters who I done work for them. One of them wishes to receive the same service from my team next time for her upcoming tasks.
I left no stone unturned to keep myself in the role and provided them with several #mitigatingcircumstances, but could not stop their unfair dismissal.
For those who did not hear about #Deloittevalues on social media before:
Serve with integrity,
Take care of each other,
Foster inclusion,
From my experience, I saw the complete opposite of the above.

"Nobody wants to work! Everyone is so lazy! No one has any work ethic!"
That's all a lie and I'm sorry you've been made to believe that. The truth is people are applying and many people have great work ethic or can be easily taught but the jobs they're forced into are so trash that if they had the choice, why would they ever actually apply there? Why would they want to work there?
My current workplace, a gas station, is sitting on at least a dozen applications but my boss won't hire any of them because, "they're welfare fodder, they've only kept a job for six months or less." We're finally hiring someone in now because, "they looked put together and have a nice looking car," but only because one of my coworkers is leaving, having out in a notice a month ago which my boss hasn't forgiven her for and is spiteful about. All of this doesn't even touch the HUGE mouse problem we had for MONTHS, the heavily leaking ceiling with a huge hole over its door, or the mold that's just everywhere throughout the fridges and the ceiling tiles. And even THAT doesn't touch on the surprising amount of racist and homophobic comments I hear from customers (or employees/my boss sometimes) here and there.
At another job I worked from the stores opening, through orientation, and watched everyone that had miraculously lasted the first two years leave because two of my managers had an affair, lied about it to everyone, fired someone over seeing their text messages and kept messing up our supply orders. When my actual boss finally stepped in he was so out of touch with what actually needed to be done in the store that it caused worse problems. I also heard at some point, when people had to take on second jobs, that this boss was flat out doing everything he could to get rid of people because, " they were making another job their priority instead of this one."
The second job I had to take during the one mentioned just above (because I was one of those people not getting enough hours) was flat out a horrible, toxic work environment. Everyone had a bad attitude, did not want to be there and even if it seemed like they were having a good day, one wrong work or work slip up made their mood flip on a dime. I had to flat out ask to not be put on the schedule with one of the employees because they were that mean to me, and I can get along with anyone so that's saying something. The labor cost they had was absolutely ridiculous there (meaning they could only keep so many people on at a time to afford being there, possibly only two even during a lunch or dinner rush with a fully packed drive through and lobby) and when one manager decided, "I have to send my help home and work by myself for an hour, otherwise I'm gonna get yelled at about the labor cost," and singlehandedly handled one of those lunch rushes on their own. They were written up for it. They left that morning after signing that paper because, despite not being allowed to be there on your own as an employee, our boss was adamant about labor costs and could have covered for her or not told anyone. If she hadn't have some what she did, she would have actually been yelled at. It was an incredibly disrespectful move done in the name of corporate.
The one job that paid me well did so because they appreciated my work and everyone else kept leaving. I saw three raises in three months because I was essentially THE kitchen manager. That was great. Thing was, even though the people I worked with and for were good to me, it was a bowling alley/restaurant/arcade/bar where you were expected to prep, cook, take reservations, set people up on lanes via computer, serve people if your manager was busy, do light maintenance on the bowling machines and arcade machines, keep up with dishes and get the end of the day cleaning done which sometimes meant vacuuming the carpet across all eighteen lanes of customer seating and cleaning the tables/chairs stationed there too. All of that, despite the raises, was done for minimum wage starting and the place was almost always packed. I'd often get asked to stay because they kept a few employees that while good at their job they just missed shifts constantly because they knew they could, since this job had on-call shifts too. There were nights my husband picked me up that I was so sore and overworked that I would get in the car and just start sobbing. I wouldn't stop for ten minutes or more, either until we were mostly home or we got something to eat since I was normally too hungry to keep crying.
The very first job I ever got was at a pizza place. Over all it was the most laid back, despite being run by one of the Mafia families in town (of which there are a few but tbf they're very low key). The problem there was that the boss was a fucking scumbag who thought that in his case the Mafia status made him a big shot. It didn't. On a side note, his self important scumbag attitude made the other families in the area see him for the joke he was. He would make passes at the waitresses in exchange for streak dinners and money, only ever hire girls who were cute/pretty as waitresses so he could have a chance at doing so with someone cute/pretty. When we had a lot of money coming in he would spend it on improving the bar that was attached to the restaurant, as in getting new flat screen tvs or new glasses, some trivial thing that he didn't actually need. Not the kitchen ware that needed fixing, which at one point caused me to get a third degree burn because someone ended up running into my arm with boiling hot lasagna out of an oven we didn't normally use. There was also a point where I had to deliver a pizza to him, which he ordered drunkenly and over the phone while he was in the bar only twenty feet away, but when I went to deliver it to him and grab a jug of wine I needed for the restaurant, his grandson (very politely) had to stop me from doing so because his grandfather was doing something with a woman in the backroom of the bar in the middle of the day.
Currently, I have to move out of my house and in with friends a state away with my husband because even with two people working nearly 40 hours each at a minimum wage job still isn't enough to live and thrive off of. It's nothing we can make an actual life off of. We have to leave our house behind for a season, get new jobs and save money in this new place, just so we can afford to come back and fix up and sell our house/land. Our combined income is about $30,000 flat, in a small town where everything was just affordable enough to get by. It isn't anymore.
I sent out five job applications in one month only to hear back from one with a no, the others ghosted me completely until just the other day, literally the month after.
"No one wants to work! Everyone is lazy! No one is applying!"
You don't know how bad it is and has been even before COVID. Add inflation onto the long list of fucked up, unprofessional or flat out cruel things that can be done or said in many workplaces, which you have to deal or else your fired, on top a work chore/task sheet that probably keeps you overworked and exhausted the entire week/month/year and I ask you-
Would you want to work?

100 days of productivity 11/100
Quick one before I get into the shower. Did an hour of maths revision and I started the homework but I'll continue to work on it tomorrow morning. I also finished all my physics notes (finally! 🥹)
My evening turned a bit productive because I ranted to my friend (it was good for the both of us) and now I'm feeling much better and she dropped an amazing quote in the middle of that I want to share with youse:
"Take your time when you know you have it" -K
I'm didn't really follow my time blocked schedule today and I think it's good, it can help you be really productive but I think I'll be using it more as a guide than a proper schedule. Oh and we got talked to a bit more in school about in-person work experience, haven't gotten an email back yet from a company, but my dad got talking to his dentist today so I think I'll be going into there (not technically formal work xp) for the day. (Also dentistry does require biology as an ALevel which I don't do and the fight is back from when I first picked my subjects almost a year ago.. oh well, I might not like it anyways or do it in my 40s if I really still want to 🙃)
