El Día Mundial del Pangolín se celebra el tercer sábado de febrero, con el objetivo de crear conciencia sobre la difícil situación que atraviesa este extraño mamífero por la caza ilegal, para satisfacer la demanda de carne, escamas y fetos.

Los cazadores los buscan por sus supuestas propiedades curativas y para venderlos como manjar, dado el elevado precio de su carne.

En 2017 se firmó la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres (CITES). Desde entonces las ocho especies de pangolines que existen entre Asia y África están protegidas contra el tráfico ilegal, al menos sobre el papel. Otra cosa es la efectividad del tratado en la práctica, que está lejos de hacerse realidad.

El pangolín está muy amenazado y en peligro de desaparecer, y lo más triste, sin que mucha gente haya oído ni siquiera hablar de él, pero aún queda esperanza, porque muchas personas en todo el mundo trabajan para evitar que esto ocurra, y para preservar a esta especie amenazada que forma parte de la rica biodiversidad del planeta Tierra.

¿Qué es el pangolín?

El pangolín es un mamífero que vive en Asia y África y que se alimenta de hormigas, gracias a su lengua extraordinariamente larga que penetra en los hormigueros. Es tímido y prefiere salir de noche.

Todo su cuerpo está recubierto de unas escamas duras y, cuando se asusta, se enrolla en forma de bola y se queda inmóvil protegiendo la parte blanda de su cuerpo que queda en el interior.

Esta característica lo hace especialmente vulnerable a la captura ilegal para el tráfico de su carne y sus escamas, ya que los furtivos sólo tienen que levantarlo del suelo sin que exista ningún tipo de persecución ni lucha.

Este mamífero tímido y asustadizo puede llegar a comer hasta 70 millones de hormigas al año y ello lo convierte en un aliado del equilibrio de los ecosistemas ya que controla las poblaciones de insectos, además de airear la tierra y mantenerla fértil.

La esperanza para el pangolín

Muchas personas en todo el mundo trabajan para la preservación de esta amenazada especie. Los gobiernos han expresado su voluntad para trabajar en contra del tráfico ilegal a través de la legislación y la concienciación para reducir su demanda.

Los países pertenecientes a la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Fauna y Flora Silvestres (CITES) declararon ilegal la captura de este animal, brindándole la mayor protección.

Incluso las empresas privadas se han unido a este esfuerzo y han tomado medidas para sensibilizar a la población.

Como ejemplo, mencionaremos el caso de seis compañías aéreas internacionales que han decidido emitir en sus vuelos el documental Eye of the Pangolin en sus rutas de larga distancia. Las aerolíneas comprometidas son British Airways, Swiss International Air Lines, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, TAP Air Portugal y KLM.

¿Cómo puedes ayudar a preservar el pangolín?

Hay muchas maneras en las que tú también puedes ayudar a la conservación de este extraordinario animal, entre ellas:

Nunca consumas ni compres un producto elaborado a base de pangolín, ni de ningún animal en peligro de extinción.
