I did some Castle Nathria LFR last night with my DK and ranked higher on the list of total damage done than my mage ever does.  Bwuh?

This was at the end of the LFR!Denathrius fight.  I was 4th.  FOURTH!   I know DPS is a better indicator than damage done, but I forgot to screenshot that.  Still, I usually have to scroll down on the list to find myself, yet there I was near the top.  That was my best finish, but after the other wings I ended up like 7th and 12th, I think.

Now, I don’t follow the actual numbers on the damage/DPS meters that closely,  instead looking to see how I compare with others, so maybe my mage is still more powerful overall.  Maybe these numbers are actually awful and I was just in a particularly crappy group.  I don’t know.  I’m not hardcore enough to crunch numbers. 

Back in the day, i.e. vanilla through MoP, when I raided quasi-seriously, I did watch numbers a bit more, but since I returned to very casual raiding in SL I haven’t even tried.  Some people enjoy that aspect of the game, but it’s not my thing.  If I’m doing about the same DPS as my group mates (or more), and the bosses die more than we do, I figure it’s all good. 

Anyway, it was still nice to feel like I was a major contributor to DPS for once, instead of a barely middle-of-the-pack mediocre DPS there for social reasons, food tables, portals, decursing, interrupts, and sheeping.

It was totally unexpected, because while both my mage and DK have ilvl 225 legendaries, they aren’t on par in most other ways...

MAGE:  ilevel 205 DK:  ilevel 196

MAGE:  all gear that can be enchanted is enchanted, plus two gem slots added via Ven’ari DK:  zero enchants or gems

MAGE:  Has been my main since vanilla, always fire spec (except for a brief foray into a hybrid frostfire spec in WoTLK and then being frost for part of MoP and all of WoD) DK:  A class I’ve played periodically, off and on, since WotLK.  My other DK (Vallkyrie) has always been unholy but only does solo PVE content.  The DK above (Kalizai) leveled as blood spec for survivability and only switched to unholy at max level for instances because holy crap I am not brave enough to tank LFR (or anything more complex than open world group quests and world bosses, to be honest).  Still, I am not that familiar with unholy spec in a group setting.

MAGE:  ranged DPS who can stand back and ignore a lot of mechanics DK:  melee DPS, thus having to deal with a lot of new-to-me mechanics

MAGE:  Doesn’t usually waste a flask in LFR but does use weapon oil and food buffs DK:  Has never touched a flask, uses a sharpening stone on her weapon and usually has a food buff

MAGE:  Has looked up multiple guides about spell priority and rotation, stat weights, etc DK:  Ooh, pretty buttons light up!  I should press them!  (Well, I mean, I do read tooltips so I at least know what my abilities do, and whether they’re single-target or AOE, that sort of thing, but I haven’t read any external guides.)

MAGE:  Struggles to break into the top 10 on the DPS charts in LFR DK:  see above

MAGE:  Wants to put down the Sire for the horrible things he did, especially to her adopted home of Ardenweald DK:  Wants to get down with the Sire...

Wrote something short for Shey and Varian set sometime late Wotlk (prior to them being anything other than friends) because as shadowlands inches closer I’m having feels about them again T-T

Shey leaned on a balcony overlooking the tournament grounds, the Argent Tournament was nearing its end, the event held to test the might of members of both the Horde and Alliance as well as build up morale and a powerful team for the push into the Icecrown Citadel and to the Lich King himself. A scuffle here and there outside of the scheduled combat did occur, but it was rare, both factions tending to favor the jousting and dueling in the ring rather than all-out brawling, especially with the upcoming battles.

The next event was starting soon, featuring a handpicked team that Shey herself was part of. She spotted a few of them milling about the crowd, watching others train, or prepping their gear. A night elf who nearly blended in with the snow if not for the black and red cloak she had wrapped tightly around her. A blood elf stood by her side, scratching the head of a snow leopard that leaned on him. The pair were a husband and wife team, a priestess, and a ranger that had worked together on and off over the years, though from what their friends said they weren’t originally on friendly terms.

A human in heavy armor trudged by, a large shield strapped to his back and hair a mess. Their tank for this. She spotted a draenei with a gnome by his side heading to the tents. Those were the remaining half of their team for the night so that meant she would need to head down soon as well.

The wind whipped through bringing fresh snow and a bit of a shiver, the mage thanked her luck at her specialty. Fire magic had some advantages, like being able to get away without wearing heavy clothes unless it was particularly cold. As such, she was wearing her usual favored gear, a black leotard with matching thigh-high boots, fingerless gloves, and a black and white cloak to keep her shoulders covered. An enchanted crown floated behind her head, bobbing in the breeze but otherwise remaining fixed in its location.

“Nervous?” A voice to her side asked as Varian approached, heavy boots thunking on the wooden panels as he walked closer. He leaned on the balcony next to her, looking out over the grounds as well.

“A little. But I know we’ll do fine, the team I’m part of is one of the best here I think.” She grinned, “Though I could be biased.”

He chuckled at that, a rare smile on his face as he turned his attention to her. The look on his face made it clear he had something on his mind.

"Copper for your thoughts?"

He let out a huff, the vapor getting caught in the chilly gust of wind that raced through, causing both their cloaks to snap wildly, nearly getting caught on each other.

Shey puffed a lock of hair out her face as soon as the gust subsided, waiting for the man at her side to reply.

The wind caused him to shiver, having snuck in where his clothes and armor were thinnest and giving him a chill. "How are you not cold?" He finally asked, "I'm covered in furs and armor and am certain I'll be shivering through the speeches tonight. But you look fine. More than fine if I'm honest." He gestured to her clothes. "Is it magic?"

"In away. It's not a spell itself, but I've always had an affinity for fire magic, so even without casting, I tend to stay nice and toasty no matter what I wear."

"Sounds helpful."

"It can be." She admitted, "here." She said as she turned to him, reaching out and cupping his cheeks, her bare fingers settling along his jaw and neck, then closed her eyes and leaned forward to press her forehead against his. "How does that feel? Nice and warm?"

"Mhm," he hummed in reply, leaning into the touch, enjoying the feeling of both the warmth as well as just how close she was. He valued her as one of the Alliance's most trustworthy champions, and they had become close friends over the years since his return to Stormwind after foiling Onyxia's plot. But something in their relationship had been shifting recently. The subtle look of affection in her eyes when she'd look at him, the emptiness he felt when she was away. He had been tempted to try something, to push a little in the direction this seemed to be going.

He leaned forward a little more, their noses nearly touching. Perhaps…

"Your majesty!" A guard snapped to attention a few feet away, interrupting the moment. "The tournament is soon to begin. Highlord Fordring is awaiting your arrival."

The interruption was all that was needed for Shey put some distance between them, looking embarrassed as if they had been caught. He only wished that were the case. Nodding to the guard, Varian gave Shey an apologetic look. "We will have to continue our conversation another time then. I must speak with Tirion and Jaina before your match. Good luck."

"Thank you, your majesty, I will do my best." She smiled as he stepped away, then turned and headed to meet up with the rest of her team.

Classic thoughts so far:

Way too many people to make questing a genuinely fun experience since everything is always dead and theres no loot/experience sharing. but in between everything I’ve found questing to be the most fun and relaxing part of vanilla thus far. Its way more grindy than it is now, which has its downsides (boring… drop rate is frustrating…) but also kind of fun and really inspires grouping up with randoms, even if just for 10 minutes to share the kill credit on whatever quest.

Old orgrimmar is literally better than I remember it. I love it, it’s easier to navigate then new orgrimmar, thrall is awesome (i forgot how much i genuinely loved the hidden enemies quest line and the text for it which probably sounds weird but i have vivid memories about it), the city feels lived in and real, like a much more worthy parallel to Stormwind despite its smaller size. My first character was an undead, so taking the zeppelin from brill, arriving outside orgrimmar, walking through the gates – that whole experience was really nice to relive after over a decade considering the first time I did that is a special memory to me

Old undead char opening monologue is v good and the current writers on the retail team need it tattooed in their eyelids for what theyre doing to sylvanas. classic is one big reminder to the fuck you the lore has become, even if gameplay has arguably largely improved

I knew a lot of shit – arrows, no hunter pet till level 10, weapon skills, being too broke to buy your class spells etc. – were waiting for me but there’s always another “oh ja kennis” moment and its really fun to re-explore everything I loved about classes back in the day, even if mana management is a pain in my ass and two spells into casting my mage is oom. I especially love that I have to read the quests again and how much more immersive the game is when there’s no icons on your map or blue areas marked for you. I think I read more quests than the average person and try to turn off icons on maps etc but the difference was v noticeable in a good way.

Professions are relevant again – this is prolly largely due to low level influx of players since no one is 60 yet, but the fact that I can make dresses and have them be useful long term and have the stats be meaningful is really… pure. It’s a pure experience and I enjoy being tailoring/enchanting; it doesn’t feel like a requirement to grind out useless shit until I can sell bags; I am using the shit I make, and if I don’t use it I know others will have use for it. Two out of three in my party are clothies also so the usefulness is exponential and It feels nice

Conjuring water/food and not being able to get rank 2 but having the rank 1 shit be useless, and then finally getting rank 2, costs half my damn mana to conjure water and I ONLY GET 2 WATER… boooooyyyyyy fuck you.

I forgot resisting spells was a thing mobs do and let me tell you I do not care for that shit

A lot of quality of life shit I miss (e.g. reagents, or just having a quest list right on my screen, even just “talk to dick mcdickerson” would be useful) but there’s something really charming about the barebones necessity shit of a lot of gameplay and UI. It might just be novelty, we will see if it wears off over time

     Thinking about Arthas & dragonslaying.

     Human campaign, one of the optional quests is to slay Searinox, who’s been terrorizing the locals. ( “ Fiery enchantments could prove useful, ” Arthas mulls obliviously. ) Undead campaign, we optionally murder Sapphiron to steal his treasures.

     WotLK cinematic is his resurrection of Sindragosa & her summoning is now one of his & his death knights’ signature moves. Both of his Scourge Wins AU skins for HotS invoke Frostwyrm aesthetics.

     It’s clearly another manifestation of his “ golden prince gone dark ” arc, but it’s surprisingly understated for how ubiquitous it is to his character. Possibly this is the result of us having no friendly Frostwyrm NPCs, because certainly they have to have a particular perspective of him.

 Before the Curse

Torunn's story begins when she was small. Born a runt and destined to die to wolves in the harsh snow of a Fjord winter, she was found as a crying baby by a Blacksmith of Halgrind named Einar Ironaxe. He was a well respected man among the Dragonflayer clan, he supplied fighters with top of the line armor and weapons. He was tough and very hard headed. He had a soft spot for Torunn though. Knowing that as a runt she was suppose to be killed he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Something had held his hand from doing so. Instead he returned to Halgrind with his adopted daughter and decided to raise her as his own.

King Ymiron was not pleased to see a runt that lived and Einar did all he could to protect her. Ymiron eventually agreed that if she could prove herself to still be a strong warrior despite the fact she was small and not as strong as the others, she would gain respect as a true Vrykul and with that she began training. Growing up she helped out at the anvil with her father. She became stronger swinging the hammer and in the off days Einar taught her how to fight. But she wasn’t always training or working. She had two best friends, Leif and Fil. The trio would always run off to do childish things and they would always dream big about their lives.

The Curse of Flesh

Many being began to notice the Vrykul children were being born weak, small, and by their standards, ugly. Ymiron, thinking that the Titans have cursed them became outraged and turned on his gods and ordered to keep the Vrykul bloodline strong. Parents of children affected by the curse were to instantly kill their children to prevent the spreading of the curse. Some parents did not follow his orders and escaped their own death with their children, later to create what is known as the Human race. Those who remained and were strong were granted Enchanted Slumber in Gjalerbron . By this time Torunn was about 18 years old when this happened. She had gone through her path to adulthood and had taken her Oath to her Jarl. Ymiron still saw Torunn as weak and in his mind he still wanted her dead. But her father fought for her. To him and surprisingly others she had proven herself a strong Vrykul like the others and after much bickering she was granted slumber.

The Awakening

After 10,000 years of slumber the Vrykul were beginning to be awaken. Torunn was finally awoken and happily reunited with Einar and eventually with her friends Leif and Fil. From there they continued their lives and welcomed the other Vrykul that too awoke.

After returning from a Month long hunting trip with her friends they soon found their beloved villaged plagued by the undead. Ymiron and other Vrykul either scared or greedy for power had completely turned on the Titans and followed the Lich King attacking humans. She had lost her two friends and for a long while she continued to fight for Halgrind. At the peak of the battle she had met with the forces in Westguard Keep. They did not trust her at first but after many years of working with them and keeping the scourge at bay they finally granted her paperwork to find work in Stormwind and start a new life, just in time for the Legion to return and for her to face her first of many demons

Description

Even though she is a Vrykul she stands around nine feet tall. She has very defined muscles in her arms and legs, Her exposed midsection shows very formed ab muscles that cut very sharp. Torunn has a decently wide hips and smaller waist, her chest was evenly formed and firm but cleavage was always hidden behind her armor. Her face was a bit long with sharp features and a well cut jaw line that complimented her smile. Her eyes were a piercing blue with beautifully long lashes. Torunn for a woman who had scars of her own was almost shockingly beautiful. Normally she had her long strawberry blonde hair in a ponytail but as of lately she let it down all the time. On the back on her neck she wore a crudely burned horde mark that she had gotten when she was take by the Undead’s for a short time. She had escaped when being shipped back to the Orcs.

Tattoos

On her shoulders she has runic bands that flow to her shoulder blades flaring out into Val’kyr wings.

Going down her upper arms she has two large tattoos of roaring bears

The upper parts of her forearms are wrapped with runic dragons

On the inner part of her left forearm she sports a fairly new tattoo of a complicated run of Protection, balance, beauty and health.

From the upper part of her stomach (Almost right under her breasts) Flowing down her waist to her thighs are bands on runes reading of her life story in Vrykul tongue. The bottom of the bands are unfinished and leave room for more to be done.
