DC x DP Prompt: Bruce is bad at emoting but at least ghosts are empathic (too bad bat kids are not)
Was reading Twincognito on AO3 when I stumbled across this gem again:
~
" “Danny, Tim. I was just…checking in. Is everything alright?” Curse his inability to make meaningful conversation when it wasn’t a life or death situation.
They glanced at each other and shrugged.
Then Danny hauled himself out of the bed and walked over to Bruce.
Bruce tried not to let too much excitement show on his face. "
~
Now I really want to read a story where Bruce adopts Danny post Meta trafficking and is being his usual emotionally constipated self. His kids keep getting mad at him because he's treating their new meta brother who was trafficked poorly (generally being stilted in conversation with him, walking away hurriedly mid-conversation, avoiding Danny when he's feeling really awkward, etc). They think Bruce is discriminating against Danny for being a civilian, meta, dealer's pick, but really it's just Bruce being horribly socially awkward. Danny knows this because of ghost empathy and find the whole thing hilarious. The whole thing comes to a head with the Bat Kids staging an intervention in the Bat Cave.

Let's talk about how Edgeworth addresses Maya, because I think it's super interesting!
Tumblr media
"Ms. Maya Fey" when introducing her to the court. He's a professional, after all.
Tumblr media
"Maya Fey" on a separate occasion.
Does he ever call her "Ms. Fey"?
No. He does address Mia as "Ms. Fey!"
Tumblr media
As a matter of fact, Edgeworth uses "Ms. Fey" to only address Mia. He never addresses Maya as "Ms. Fey".
What about after this trial?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He just calls her Maya!
And to her face? Still "Maya".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then in 3-5, still "Maya Fey"/"Maya".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides reserving "Ms. Fey" for just Mia, I think there's a really interesting reason he calls her "Maya" so informally considering his formal tendencies.
Yes, it involves the Japanese version of the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Mayoi-kun...."
"A. Mitsurugi kenji." / "Oh. Prosecutor Mitsurugi."
In Japanese, Edgeworth calls her "Mayoi-kun" after 1-2, where he addresses her as "Ayasato Mayoi" during her trial. If you have a basic understanding of Japanese honorifics, you might be familiar that "-kun" is usually reserved for men and boys. Maya (and Mia) call Phoenix "Naruhodo-kun", as an example. They both use the honorific to imply that Phoenix is a subordinate (which is a touch scandalous coming from Maya, considering she's both younger than him and not even a practicing attorney, but Phoenix never corrects her.) It can also be used for male classmates in school.
There is a reason, however, that women are sometimes addressed as "-kun", and that's in the workplace! It's common for male coworkers to call their female subordinates "-kun", especially if they are a more familiar coworker.
(Edit, slight correction/addition: addressing a female coworker as "-kun" is more common and even seen as more polite than "-san" for a subordinate in settings like parliament and courts!)
As for Edgeworth, he certainly caught that Phoenix addresses Maya as "Mayoi-chan", but it's probably too familiar for him, so he wants to use a more respectful honorific for her, and something more familiar than "-san", which is similar to "Mr."/"Ms." So, he calls her "Mayoi-kun"! (He also calls Kay Faraday "Mikumo-kun", for similar reasons.)
So I can see why the localizers would scratch their heads as to how they would localize "Mayoi-kun". The nuances of using that honorific can't be translated easily, so between calling Maya "Ms. Fey" (and probably also agreeing that ought to be reserved for Mia) and just "Maya", they ultimately decided to just stick with her first name.

While the USSR definitely struggled with a whole range of social issues throughout its existence, the conscious attempts to break the oppressive systems of Capitalism put it far in advance of anywhere in the Imperial Core and it's crazy how many Left Libs try to use contemporary culture war rhetoric to frame the Soviets as especially "problematic". Like the USSR never completely resolved the Russian empire's legacy of conquest and colonialism, and various forms of racism and ethnic chauvinism persisted right to the end, but a conscious effort was made to give dignity and self-determination to the various oppressed nationalities and it shows.
This manifested in countless small ways; from dying languages given new life by cultural initiatives and the free circulation of media to the millions of once marginalised peasants and nomads being given access to the education and industry needed to participate in the modern world as equals. But it also manifested in big dramatic symbols that could almost be written off as tokenistic if it weren't for the broader context of clear genuine effort. Like a lot of people forget that Stalin was a Georgian; a people brutalised by Russian Imperial expansion. And yet this member of a conquered and oppressed minority not only rose to the highest position in the nation, but did so as a widely beloved figure whose legacy lives on to this day. And this happened decades before the US even had its first Catholic President.
Like Proletarian rule won't automatically end all systems of oppression but it's the bare minimum prerequisite to doing so in a meaningful way; even flawed and ultimately failed Socialist experiments were able to attack these systems in a way that puts the most powerful and "progressive" Capitalist nations to shame
