Anne Enright || The Wren, The Wren
Longlist The Wren, The Wren is a novel about family relationships, a mother-daughter relationship to be more specific. In her novel Enright introduces us to mother Carmel and daughter Nell. Through them we learn about the ways family patterns are born and consolidated. Enright shows us how we are all caught in family, in both a positive and negative way. At first I found it difficult to get…

What Does Your Ideal Home Look Like? Exploring the Psychology of Domestic Bliss
The notion of an ideal home is, at its core, a complex psychological construct. While individual preferences will vary, the commonalities reveal much about our collective needs and desires.
Daily writing promptWhat does your ideal home look like?View all responses The concept of a ‘home’ is as varied as the people who inhabit them. From an architectural marvel to a cozy cottage, the range of possibilities is endless. Yet, when asked to describe their ideal home, most people often find themselves reaching for common elements. That is exactly what a kidnapper would say. Part 4
RECAP: There’s 6 toed cats, The Office trivia, my friends’ loss, pain, and fear. The solution to all problems is a 6 figure book deal. DUH. What lasts 2 hours too long, is boring and hot but made better with the occasional ping pong ball and a half dozen confetti canons? Not a night of beer pong, but close. The Powell county high school graduation ceremony before the night of underage beer…

Feminine Suffering Is Not Shocking
A highly specific bone I have with historical and high fantasy shows is the punishment inherent to being feminine or simply being a woman. I am tired, exhausted, sick to death of women who value beauty or mercy or who just want to survive being punished.
Another week, another drawn out scene of women being subjugated in an intensely gender-specific way for the gratification and convenience of men in Westeros. I wish I could say that it was even mildly surprising, but with nine episodes of House of the Dragon and a scene like this clocking in nearly every episode, I cannot. The world of Westeros has always fetishized suffering in all forms, but…

Danielewski's Strange Love Letter Thing
Danielewski’s Strange Love Letter Thing
The novelist Mark Z. Danielewski posted something on April Fools that floats between labels; it’s a short story and a love letter and a blog post and an epilogue, or maybe a prologue, or an elegy; taken at face value, it’s an article from an academic journal. Turn the first page and it’s a dialogue. A short story.  What stamped it with a special kinda beauty, whatever it might be, is that it was…

Kilbride House by Sheila Forsey
Kilbride House by Sheila Forsey
Recently I’ve been in holiday and I took with me a book written by Sheila Forsey, Kilbride House. Having an early morning flight I booked a room in the airport hotel, and started my holiday read right away. I knew nothing about the writer but I decided to give it a try. Going through the pages it was easy to immerse in, as she described the place I was staying, Shannon Airport and the hotel. And…

Questionable Decisions
I haz them.
I also have – for a while, at least – an office. So this is what happened… we own a little house that isn’t the one we’re living in. It’s a tiny house, frankly not in the best condition (needs modern windows, ceilings, um, other things), with a single bedroom and while it was lovely in the ‘honeymoon’ period of our life paired with living like poor college students (even if he wasn’t…

a rambling house
Tumblr media
Sometimes I’ll sit in front of a blank page of my sketchbook, pen in hand, coffee poured, for some time with seemingly no idea of what I’d like to draw, what ideas I’d like to explore – an ‘architect’s block’, if you will.  To break the silence, I might attempt to draw a floor plan of a house I know in a different style (as in this previous post, where I took the Craftsman Gamble House and…
