i just checked wikipedia and the 2007-2008 writer’s strike was only 99 days long. the strike that shows up in the wikipedia pages of every show from that era with a blurb on how it affected shooting and release schedules.
we’re on day 113 of the current strike, with no end in sight.

The news that SAG-AFTRA is joining the WGA is exciting for me. I hope that this proves to be a domino effect that leads to other sections of the entertainment industry—especially the VFX industry—unionizing. The threat of crucial jobs in the entertainment industry being automated is omnipresent.

If 2007-8 was any indication…it’s about to get very clear all the places where there are striking writers and it’s gonna get weirdddd in media for a bit.
As always, solidarity forever.

It’s not that I’m not working on my WIPs, it’s that I’m *checks notes* choosing not to write in solidarity with the Writer’s Guild Strike.

lived through the strike fifteen years ago and will live through this one again the exact same way minus school work—by watching reruns and revisiting existing works. fuck it, ya’ll can’t make me watch reality tv.
it is pretty fucking wild that criminal minds, law and order: svu and greys anatomy are living through another goddamn strike. like holy shit, guys. who tf asked for the live version of that black mirror episode?
support the goddamn strike and pay people what they fucken deserve. it’s not hard. just stop being a fucken scumbag.

The fight against AI is a fight for Humanity.
Automate boring repetitive jobs, not arts, or there's no point in even being human.
An AI prompt is no smarter than an elaborate google search. The Algo does all the work of finding the parts and putting them together; not you.
You did not draw. You did not write. You did not compose. If fact, you most often ask the machine to imitate a famous artist's style, because you have none of your own. All you did is google and then

PSA For All Aspiring Screenwriters (From An Aspiring Screenwriter)
When you’re trying to break into the industry, screenwriting competitions are usually an excellent way to do that. They get you exposure, money, deals, and more.
Right now, they’re the worst possible thing that could happen to you.
During this writer’s strike, there is a very high likelihood that a lot of screenwriting competitions are tying to get you to scab. They’re offering you amazing opportunities in the hope that you’ll give them your script and then the studios can use it, meaning that you have scabbed, you have crossed the picket line. If you scab, you will not be able to join the WGA, meaning that you go through your career without any protections against getting taken advantage of.
So no matter what’s being offered, don’t fall for it.

I’m convinced the executives who think AI can replace actual writers don’t realize how soulless the average ChatGPT pitch can be.

anyway speaking of the writer’s strike and the fact that writers DON’T get enough credit for crafting the stories in the first place, I found myself looking at some movies that’re currently popular on letterboxd, and look how LONG it can take just to get to the writing credit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
even for movies where the director IS the writer, you can see how AGGRESSIVELY prioritized that credit is! the ONLY upfront credit you get is the director:
Tumblr media
personally, I think that the writing credit should be either first, or second only to the director. why do we prioritize a billion producers first? why do we basically ignore caring about who created the story in the first place?
I know that the writer’s strike isn’t only about credit, but seeing people discuss how writer’s contributions can be diminished,,, this feels telling
