Fantasy Guide to Education
Tumblr media
I'm always asked what sort of education different people recieve throughout different historical eras and since I'm heading back to college soon, I thought it was high time I made this guide.
Disparity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Education is viewed as a right by many but for some and thoughout history it was a privilege. For the wealthy and those of high status, education can be easily accessed. They can afford to tailor an education to fit their needs, they can hire tutors, and they can afford tuitions to top schools. For the poor, education was a luxury. However this doesn't mean that it was available. Some communities would fund a school or send their children to a local teacher - usually they had to pay a daily fee or at least bring kindling for the heating. Many poorer children also worked so they could not attend school consistently or were pulled out very early into their education. However, some poorer students could gain access to high level education if they were extremely bright or caught the attention of a wealthy benefactor who could fund their education.
Education as a Weapon
Tumblr media
Education could also be banned for certain groups in society. It could be illegal to fund schools or host gatherings for students of a certain background, race, religion or gender. Education against the law could be punished by imprisonment, exile or execution. This is a measure usually taken by oppressive governments in order to follow a moral code or restrict the betterment of a certain group. An example would be the Irish Catholics under the Penal Laws.
On the otherhand, there is education that is influenced by the state to inject certain values, moralities and Opinions into a population. This is the intense restriction of reading material, removal of books that contest the teachings of the government or the kidnap of children from their culture, in order to forcibly educated them in alignment to their beliefs. An example would be the residental schools of North America and Canada and the AHS schools of Nazi Germany.
Content
Tumblr media
As above, content of what children learn usually falls into a certain category. This is also true for the education offered to the wealthy and the poor. The poor would be offered a basic education, learning literacy and arithmetic, usually with an expectation that the children would not go on to any jobs that needs a broader education. Any higher education would be hard to obtain because of cost and the discriminatory view of the enrollment panels. The wealthy would have access to an array of different subjects including: The arts (drawing, music, painting, poetry, dancing), sports (riding, martial skills, rowing, hunting), arithmetic, geography, languages, geography and history. While progression to higher education will still be difficult, any affluent families are legacies of prestigious colleges or can make a donation to grease a few palms. These schools would be where the wealthy make lifelong connections and get springboarded toward opportunities.
Private Tutoring
Tumblr media
Whilst some affluent, aristocratic and Royal families send their children to schools, private tutoring in the home was a popular choice. Children would be educated at home but tutors who either lived in the home or come to the house. The children would be educated alongside siblings or the children of courtiers or neighbours. Private tutoring sessions would often be the only education for upper class women recieved, taught by governesses and tutors.
Premises and Equipment
Tumblr media
As mentioned above, wealthy and aristocratic families would usually attend established schools or attend school at home. They would be provided any equipment they needed. If they attend school, they would often wear a uniform. Some schools had multiple variations of the uniform for different activities. Many of the schools attended would be boarding schools. Boarding schools offered education to those who boarded and day students, however day students were often looked down upon as lesser than.
Poorer schools would be relient on donations and fees paid by students. As mentioned above, there may be a building reserved for classes - sometimes an designated schoolhouse or a teacher's home or a public building such as a gathering house or sometimes even outside - hedge schools. Equipment would be provided by the school. Uniforms at poorer schools were not a thing but students were expected to show up neat and tidy.
Corporal Punishment
Tumblr media
Corporal punishment at schools was the go to punishment for students. Teachers had free rein to strike children for mistakes and bad behaviour. Punishments include insolation, physical stress positions such as standing on a chair all day, getting objects thrown at them, being slapped on the back of the legs with a cane, being rapped on the palms or knuckles with a crop or ruler. Students may also be humiliated by teachers through the use of dunce hats, encouraging other children to bully them or by the use of verbal abuse. Corporal punishment did extend to all classes except for royal children since that was either taken by proxy by whipping boys or left up to parents.

Things I wish I knew when I started writing on tumblr:
Use tags to organise your posts: especially since you know there will be a time when you need to find a specific post but you put it in the search box and dumblr gaslights you into thinking you never reblogged it? yeah :) also to help put your fanfics, original posts, ramblings and reblogs in different categories that you keep on your blog. it helps to come up with your own trademark tags for your own blog. for example, "what's in the picklejar" is everything of my original posts (fanfics, rambles, complaints, etc). "babykelsi writes" are tags for all my masterlists. "picklejar asks" are tagged for every ask i receive in my inbox. which all coincide with my url and my name, Kelsi (which really, is not my real name but it's the internet, these streets are dangerous).
don't compare yourself to others: i know this is an age old saying, but trust me, this is something you need to hammer in your head. you're not in a competition, you're in a community. don't feel bad that one writer/artist has hundreds or thousands of notes while you have like twenty. this is especially if you're starting out, believe me, i felt that way a lot of times then i realized that it wasn't helpful and that i wasn't competing with anyone. we're all here to share and appreciate our work, our ramblings, etc. no one will make fun of you for having less notes than others. just keep writing, keep building your little space on hellsite and before you know it, you'll be mentioned in a rec list, or someone will send you a video reminding them of your fic or you'll have someone in your dms telling you a very detailed and extremely heartfelt message about how they felt very moved by your writing and how they related to your character(s). all it takes is one chapter or one-shot at a time.
write as much or as little as you want: if you feel bad that your chapters are too long, don't be. someone out there might have had a really tough day and your 8k word document of hurt/comfort, slow burn leading up to smut might be exactly what they need to feel better. if you feel bad that your chapters are too short, don't be. someone out there might be in the middle of a tough day and your 0.6k word drabble might make them giggle through their lunchbreak and help them gather their sanity to get through the rest of the day. you never know just how amazing your fics are and to us readers, size doesn't matter (did i just make a sex joke? yes. yes, i did. deal with it).
It's okay to say no sometimes: whether it's saying no to specific requests because they make you feel uncomfy and/or because you aren't well versed in a certain topic. or saying no to people asking for an update on your fic. or even saying no to tagging people in your fics (yes, y'all know what i'm talking about) because people don't have manners and just ask to be tagged without even sparing you a reblog or there isn't a taglist to begin with😐 you're not going to be an asshole for setting boundaries so let go of that icky feeling in your stomach. yes, it might seem rude or unkind to people if you say no, but this is your blog and your writing. you decide what goes and no one else can change that.
Speaking of saying no, don't be afraid to voice your opinion on something that bothers you: like i said, if you don't like people asking you for certain things, tell them that you don't like that. you're also allowed to voice your opinion if you noticed something that isn't quite right within a fandom (e.g— racism, pedophilia, etc). it might be scary, but if you feel like you noticed something off, chances are another person did and they might also be afraid to speak up until someone else does. exhibit a.
Be very careful of which blogs you interact with: because if you're like me and you run a nsfw blog, chances are that there are children on this app who will take it upon themselves to ignore all of the (+18 ONLY) signs and read stuff that wasn't meant for them. but fear not because you have a very cool friend called the "block button" who will always be available to you 24/7. and don't let the ageless blogs fool you either because someone can add their age just days, weeks or even months after you've read, commented and/or even reblogged their smut and you just find out that it's a fucking minor🤦🏻‍♀️ (yeah, had to backtrack and find every last one of their posts on my blog to delete them asap🚮). so to the adults, be sure of someone's age if you're going to interact.
It's okay if you don't read every single one of your mutual's fics: really, it is. maybe you're not in the same fandoms but you share the same braincell, and that's okay. but maybe you are in the same fandoms and that's fine too. perhaps the character they're writing for isn't your favourite or isn't the one you're currently hyperfixated on or you're just not ready to read the fic because you have your own to write or you're still crying at 3am because of a different fic. it's entirely okay, your moots will understand if you don't crack open their masterlist and inhale every single word they've written thus far. it's okay. it's fine. it's the same as buying a book and putting it on a shelf for months (or years) without reading it but eventually, you'll pick up that book and have the time of your life.
It's okay to write the same trope in different fics: no one's gonna complain about it. chances are, as your readers, we're going to gobble it up all the same because we love that trope just as much as you do and we'll thank you for it. (for example, take a look at this post of mine)
It's okay to take a break and it's even okay to give up: especially if you have a fic that's popular amongst your peers. don't feel guilty if you feel overheated, burnt out or you feel like you have to take a break because you just discovered that the actors to those specific characters are a bunch of assholes. it's completely fine. take a step back. breathe. if you want to return to that fic/character/fandom, that's okay. if you want to give it all up entirely and scrape everything off, that's okay too. there's no need to force yourself to continue down a path that doesn't make you feel safe/comfortable/happy anymore. don't feel guilty for protecting your mental and emotional peace.
which brings me to my next point, there's no definitive cure to writer's block: sometimes when you're stumped, you're stumped. maybe prompts aren't working. maybe your favourite songs aren't working either. if any and all else fails in trying to get back into writing, perhaps it's a sign to take a step back from writing entirely. maybe for a day, maybe a week, or month. or however long you need. in my personal experience, the feeling of being stumped by writer's block is easily much better to bear than being burnt out learned that the hard way.
lastly, it's okay to be horny on main: yes. you heard that right. no, i will not elaborate :)
might add more later

Everybody knows how awful writer's block is but no one is telling you how great it feels when you overcome it
Seriously, when your brain has been in a creative coma for years and then suddenly starts working again and now you have dozens of new ideas just sprouting around begging to write them, draw them, indulge in them
Everyday you wake up and what's it gonna be today? What situations will occur? What new roles will appear? What are you gonna show me today you beautiful, beautiful daydreaming machine?
God it feels great

It's torture being a writer that can only survive off an outline. I want to write a silly short whump AU of my OCs but my brain requires a 50-page detailed outline.

Dear anons,
If a writer's form of content is not to your liking, there isn't a need to barge into our inbox and TELL us that it's bad and we should seek help from others for improvement. We never asked, so we don't want to hear it. Most of the time, you all don't even know how to give proper feedback, so we don't want it.
We write for ourselves and our comfort. If you don't like a style of content or writing, unfollow, block tags, or come off the site. Attacking writers and claiming your advice was feedback is absolute entitlement. Writing isn't easy!
Sincerely,
Every writer who has gone through this shit

Fantasy Guide to Regents and Regencies
Tumblr media
A Regency is a period of time where another party rules of behalf of a monarch who is either too young, too ill or absent. A Regency can either be the monarch's own choice or a decision made for them on their behalf by a third part, usually government. Either way, a Regent is selected to act as temporary Head of State whilst the monarch is incapable of ruling.
Who can be a Regent?
Tumblr media
A Regent is an important office, even though its a temporary one. Regencies of child monarchs generally either go to the Consort, though there are all sorts of reasons why this can be blocked. Sometimes governments and kingdoms are uncomfortable with foreign consorts with uncertain allegiances ruling the kingdom or sometimes the government just doesn't approve on the basis that they doubt the Consort's skill set. Other candidates for Regencies are nearly always family members such as uncles, aunts, cousins and even children of the monarch (especially if they are absent from the country or ill). But a Regent doesn't have to be a royal. They could just be a noble elected to the position (Sir William Marshall) or even one that siezes power for themselves (Richard of York) or even a council made up of Regents, headed by a Lord Protector.
Who makes a Regent?
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, monarchs can appoint the Regent that will replace them in certain cases. For instance, a monarch would chose the Regent if they were voluntarily leaving the country or they might designate a chosen Regent on their deathbed or just in case of emergency. But they wouldn't chose a Regent if they were ruled mentally incompetent. In those cases, the government would chose.
The Powers and Responsibilities of a Regent
Tumblr media
A Regent is the acting head of state but they are not the monarch. They do not have the right to wear crowns or have a coronation and are not granted the hall pass of divine right. A Regent is referred to as their own title, say for example Duke of X, Regent of Y or Prince Regent. They are merely there to fill in for the monarch. A Regent would meet with the government, make decisions with the approval by government and sign offical documents. In cases of an absent monarch, a Regent may need the approval of the monarch themselves. Regents of child monarchs would usually include their charges in the country's running, either as spectator or student. A Regent, being temporary Head of State, would also have the responsibility of ensuring a natural cessation of their power to their monarch when their term is over. Some regents are better than others at handing over power.
Notable Regents of History
George IV, Richard III, Anne of Austria, Katheryn Parr, Richard of York, Margaret of York, Katherine of Aragon, Catherine de Medici, Louise of Savoy, Phillippe duc de Orléans, Edward Seymour Duke of Somerset, Sir William Marshall, John Duke of Bedford, Humphrey Duke of Gloucestershire, John Dudley Duke of Northumberland.

The hardest part about having ideas as a writer is that when you have them, you tend to see only bits of them in your head; like incomplete scenes that might be perfect on their own, but you still WANT something MORE; to embrace them, to come up with a story that surrounds them.
And THAT, ladies and gens, is the hardest part. To come up with a story that would breathe your silly little but wholesome ideas life, love and emotions.
That, and actually putting it all into writing.
