Nightmare

Thanks to an art piece that I found here I had to write a short. Astarion x female! Tav. TW: Gore, TW: PTSD

It was cold and stinking. It was one of the things that Astairon hated the most about the palace that he was forced to call home now. The other was how trapped he felt even though the castle was vast. The ballroom was wide and sweeping. It was a place that the then new spawn would be comfortable in were it not for the smell of blood that lingered even though the floors had been cleaned and treated with lye. If it were not for the fact that he was on his knees, commanded not to move as a dagger carved into his back. He couldn’t even beg for it to be over. Had Cazador commanded him unable to speak? Possibly, though he did like the sound of screams over anything else.

“Art takes time boy.” Came the vampire’s slimy voice, Astairon was trapped in his own mind. He wanted to get up. To drive that dagger into Cazador over and over again but his body was chained by the blood bond he had foolishly taken. This vision swam, his consciousness started to slip. Had Cazador finally gone too far?

Astarion came out of his trance sweating even though Rivington was cool at night thanks to the sea breeze. He sat bolt upright, his hands on his hips where he kept his daggers as he looked around. It took him a moment to realize he hadn’t been dragged back kicking and screaming. “You’re alright my love.” Came a gentle voice from beside him. Being face-to-face with a half-devil would have been a cause for most people to panic but the vampire was never happier that she was here. “Nelis.” He rasped as wrapped his arms around her where she kneeled. 

She held him close, allowing him to take in her near hellfire heat that came from her heritage. She whispered soothing words into his ear all while fighting herself not to cry for him. Her heart broke with every shiver that she felt from him, raked with silent sobs. “I escaped but he’s still here, in my head.” Astarion snarled when he finally stopped. Nelis let him go then, knowing that he was getting back to normal. “We will drive him out, my love. We will make him pay for every cut he’s made on you. Every scar he’s made.” She said. Her eyes burned almost red with a quiet rage.

“What happens if we kill him and I still can’t escape him?” The vampire asked as he ranked his hands through his hair. “Don’t say that. Echos may remain but that’s all they will be echos. And I promise to make enough noise to drown them out.” She said and gave him a soft kiss. The warlock hated knowing there was something she couldn’t solve but she hoped that it would help. She made to get up on her feet when Astarion held on to her night clothes. “Don’t leave.” He said, barely above a whisper. Nelis nodded. “Don’t worry I will be here as long as you need me.” She answered and slipped into his bedroll. When dawn broke, waking horrors would await them but she hoped that just being here would allow the pale man a moment of rest.

Is there something you would recommend reading for someone with very basic knowledge of classical history bc I wanna feel the emotions you’re feeling but damn idk what you’re talking about

mshshsdhdhgh I also don't know what I'm talking about half the time, but yeah!

so my interest in the classics is driven largely by an interest in Themes, Tragedy, and the Renaissance, which makes it a little difficult to recommend things to read because I think that even tax records are FASCINATING if I can connect it to either a Theme or a Tragedy that has my attention at that moment

if there was anything specific that I've been yelling about on this blog that piqued your curiosity, let me know and I can recommend a starter kit for that in particular! I have no formal background in classical history, and a lot of my interest was reverse engineered from the Renaissance, so I have absolutely no idea what a baseline for classical history knowledge is at any level and I tend to just. assume that I'll either fill in the blanks as I read a book or dive into whatever it is I don't know later and let it fully consume my brain.

The Graveyard Book - Neli Gaiman

4/5: Lovely writing as usual, and a perfect cozy tale to get into the spooky spirit. I loved the characters especially, and the style of telling individual stories was really well done. Solid read.

The Halloween Tree - Ray Bradbury

3/5: I usually love Ray Bradbury but this one just didn't thrill me. I don't know if it was just me not being in the right frame of mind but I just wasn't vibing. It had some fun moments but it was just ok for me.

Batman: Arkham Asylum- A Serious House on Serious Earth - Grant Morrison

4/5: Beautiful art by Dave McKean once again which bumps up the rating considerably for me. The writing was really nice at times if not a little too pretentious at times. Also, not being super knowledgeable about Batman previously makes it a little bit of a difficult read sometimes. Characters that aren't clearly named, etc. The plot was also a little confusing at times but honestly, I was just excited to see the art so...

If We Were Villains - M. L. Rio

3/5: This was a little meh for me. It's often compared to Secret History and it is extremely similar. I didn't connect with any of these characters as much as Secret History and it felt a little forced. I do like the use of quotes from Shakespeare being used in conversation as if it's their own words so the line between actor and character is blurred. I enjoyed those moments especially. But, otherwise, I found it predictable. Still a solid read.

Death of the Endless #1-2 - Neil Gaiman

4/5: This is a compilation of comics about Death from the Sandman series. She's my favorite character so by default, I'm going to enjoy it a lot. Most of the stories were very engaging but a few didn't hold my interest as much. Overall, had a great time.

House of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski

5/5: This is one of the most unique reading experiences I've ever had and I really loved it. Was I scared? Not really. But if you love things like Cain's Jawbone, research, or puzzling, this is an excellent book. The format was totally unique and it made it hard to put down. I do feel like this is another one that really benefits from reading it multiple times (as is evident by the community for it on Reddit) but even on this read through I can see all the possible solutions to the mystery inside. I love how philosophical it got most of the time and it really delves into how we perceive horror. Some of the sections did drag a bit, but arguably, that's part of the point. This was a world I was excited to escape to. I also listened to the album his sister Poe wrote alongside the book and I highly recommend it as well. It became my favorite album to listen to this month. :)

Long Live the Pumpkin Queen - Shea Ernshaw

2/5: I gave this a very generous 2/5 which is honestly too much. I didn't like it. It has some nice writing at times but it felt rushed and forced and ugh. Also (SPOILERS) why does Sally need a backstory? And a predictable one at that? It was totally unnecessary and I just felt bored the whole time. It doesn't feel like my Nightmare Before Christmas. I feel like Disney was really pushing this one and maybe Ernshaw didn't have enough freedom or passion to make it truly good.

The Hellbound Heart - Clive Barker

3/5: This was a suggestion from my brother who loves the Hellraiser movie. I read it. I enjoyed it. It's not my usual bag and honestly, I liked basically no one in it. Kristy was nice though. I couldn't help feeling that everyone deserved exactly what they got. The mood was pretty good but I guess I was expecting there to be a bit more? It is meant to be more of a pulp horror though, so at face value, it's solid for what it is. That being said, I don't have any huge desire to read more Clive Barker.

The Yellow Wallpaper - Charlotte Perkins Gilman

5/5: Wonderful! I loved the writing, and I loved the way the story slowly progresses. I prefer a psychological horror style so this was an absolute delight. Excellent discussion on mental health, women's roles, etc. It was also a perfect size to read one morning with my coffee. This was an instant favorite and I'll be reading it again.

I read a lot more than I thought I would be able to! I have a lot more I wish I could've fit into the Halloween season so I may continue reading a few into November.

LUMPS 5.8: In Which Louka Finds Out Just How Genuinely Terrifying Neli Is

I dedicate this chapter to literary allusions, which let me know it wasn’t that bad. My hero.

I could take Lila away from this place, get her healed, and finally find out why she’s so important, but instead I turn myself into a monster on her behalf. Green, leathery scales ripple out across my skin, rendering me invincible from the guns floating around the area. I make myself bigger, stronger, and the delicate silver antlers on my head expand to something more like a weapon than an accessory.

Doze puts her hand up and I stop in place. “Let her answer,” she says.

La Voleuse rolls her eyes. “Pathétique.” She gestures towards The Jewel, a woman with long dark hair and warm brown skin, who nervously steps towards her. “We will be going now. Have a nice day. Good luck repairing the damage on these priceless works of art!” With a flick of her hand, several sculptures crumble to pieces. She yawns as she turns to grab The Jewel’s arm.

“That’s the signal!” someone says. I feel static in the air, then an arc of electric light jumps from a man’s fingers towards La Voleuse. She yelps when it hits her.

“Restrain her,” Doze says. To me. With a look on her face I dare not defy. While La Voleuse clutches her stomach, I dive towards her. I pull her hands behind her, holding them in my own like we’re old friends, but then I turn my hands into crystals. She pulls against me, but she’s trapped.

Doze steps forward. “How many powers need hands?” she says, and I can only be glad she isn’t leveling those eyes at me. La Voleuse stops struggling. “How many powers need eyes?” she continues, and a large black bird lands on her shoulder. She reaches out her hand and rests it almost tenderly on La Voleuse’s throat. “How many powers need a voice?”

“You think you can threaten me?” La Voleuse laughs, and a green vapor comes pouring out of her mouth.

“It’s poison!” I warn - I was there when she took this one - but I hardly needed to waste my breath.

La Voleuse chokes and coughs after a deep yawn pulled all her poison back into her lungs before it could reach further than Doze’s elbow. She fights against me again, a frustrated cry ripped from her throat. Doze leans in, but doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t need to. If I had a glare like that, I wouldn’t have to ask twice for anything either.

La Voleuse snarls. “You’re nothing but a Mild.”

“Yeah, well, at least I have friends.”

My little thing I wrote at 1am made me start thinking of the other characters that I have planned to have kids with their LI

Felix Iresso - He wasn’t sure what to expect when he got rescued and reunited with his Jedi love. He certainly wasn’t expecting Neli to be commanding an army that included sith, but stranger things had happened. But his beautiful Twi’lek wife introducing him to a tiny toddler who looked so much like her mother, and Neli explaining that the child was his was completely out of what he might have considered possibilities. She hadn’t even known that she was pregnant when everything happened and they were separated. They hadn’t even thought she could get pregnant, what with the genetic differences between Twi’leks and Humans, it just wasn’t possible as far as they knew. But they’d been wrong apparently. Here was this perfect little girl and Neli was introducing him as her father. Marzai Iresso, his daughter, powerful in the force and more importantly she existed. He’d thought he knew what love was when he fell for Neli, but this, this feeling as the little girl toddled forward and held up her arms. As he scooped her up and held her tight to his chest, as Neli stepped over and wrapped an arm around them both and resting her other hand and her head on his shoulder, tears streaming down his cheeks as he stared at Marzai. He’d never felt love this strong, he was finally truly home. 

Corso Riggs - He spent so long looking for a family after his was killed. He found something close enough to get by a few times, and he’d finally found family here. It doesn’t hit him how true that is until not long after He marries Nesham. They decide to go to Port Nowhere so the crew can have downtime and they can celebrate. He sat on one side of his workbench, watching Nesham laughing and trying to keep little Cara from grabbing random blaster parts while he held Delaah napping safely tucked into his arms. Nesham had actually married him. Him. and she wanted him to be a father to her amazing twins, even asking if he was ok with a name change for the toddlers so he could officially adopt them. He still couldn’t believe a man like him could win the heart of a woman like her, but it had happened. And looking at this, realizing that it was real, that these perfect Togruta twins who light up his life like the brightest of stars, were his and hers and that this moment wasn’t just a dream, that all this love he felt for his Wife and his Daughters, because they were his daughters in his heart, and soon it would be legal and official, all the love he had for them, they returned. He nearly felt like crying from love and joy. He was so thankful that she’d given him a chance, she’d welcomed him into her family and he’d never imagined a love like this. This was family, happiness, this was where he belonged. “I love you Delaah Riggs. and your mother. and sister, more than I’ve ever loved anyone.” he murmured softly to the sleeping toddler. “And I’ll always keep you safe.”

Aric Jorgan -  Nohyni told Aric she was pregnant not long after they returned from their honeymoon. He hadn’t been expecting it. The thought had occurred to him, but they were soldiers, this wasn’t exactly the best life for having children. There were so many things that could go wrong, so many ways that he could screw up and ruin the kits lives before he even knew he was doing it, and what if someone went after the kits to get to them. Taking out Havoc would be a promotion to whatever imp scum managed it and kits couldn’t protect themselves for years. But as he looked at Nohyni standing in the soft light of their Coruscant apartment, wearing soft sleep clothes instead of hard durasteel armor, he could see the same thing he saw the day he told her he loved her, the day he realized that she was his life-mate and there’d never be anyone else, the day he’d proposed, the day he was finally able to marry her, he could see his entire future. Except now, instead of them alone, now that image was filled with children, bright-eyed boys, and rambunctious girls and a bright ray of hope for a lifetime and maybe, just maybe a big family, and it finally felt like more than just a far off dream. He rested his hands gently over her belly, she hadn’t started to show yet, but it didn’t matter, they both knew now, two little boys and a girl, she’d told him, a litter of three kits, their children. He loved them. He hadn’t even met them and he loved them with every single piece of his soul. Wrapping his arms around his wife, he smiled. He’d protect their kits, come what may. His family was growing, and as scared of failing them as he suddenly was, he had never been happier. “I love you Nohyni Jorgan and I can’t wait to meet our little ones”

and of course the little thing I wrote about torian that started this. But I expanded it a bit and cleaned it up and threw in just a touch of Mando’a, not much just a hint of it. 

Torian Cadera - Torian had known that any relationship with Tisna would be complicated. She was an incredible warrior, an honorable woman, the grand champion of the Great Hunt, she could have just about any unmarried Mando she wanted, and there were more then a few suitors vying for her attention who weren’t Mandalorian, and, of course, she was Mandalore’s daughter, and his father had been a traitor. Then there was her daughter. They were a package deal. Tisna wasn’t going to be with anyone who wasn’t good for her daughter, who wasn't willing to step up and be what that child needed. And now he was just holding this little Mirialan toddler, late at night not long after he and Tisna got married. She woke up and he got up to soothe her, still fusses at night sometimes, and she finally fell asleep as he’s holding her, stars blurred to streaks of light barely illuminating the room and he just stands there rocking her and looking down at his daughter, his ad’ika. She’s been his ad for ages now, since before he and Tisna talked about being an official couple, he couldn’t help it, the little girl was every bit her mother. And now he and Tisna are married, the woman he loves is his riduur and she’s asleep in THEIR bed just a few steps away and this little girl is his daughter and (being just such a Mando) completely overwhelmed with this reality, he just rests his forehead against hers, and holds this tiny little girl who holds his entire heart. And there’s only one thing that he can do here, he’s finally got the family he’s been wanting for years, his clan is coming back together. His love married him and Mandalore hadn’t been upset about it, and he’s buir to this amazing little baby, so he just whispers to her, “Ni kyr’tayl gai sa’ad -Acasha” There’s nothing else that he can say. Nothing else that can reflect how he feels just existing in that moment. When he finally looks over at the bed, Tisna is awake, quietly looking at him from amongst the pillows with the biggest, most contented sleepy smile.

This isn’t everything, but I thought I’d put down a few of them. I only did 4 because these are the ones that have popped into my head and I’m not sure yet about some of the other characters. These are the only ones where kids are planned currently. (that’ll probably change soon though idk yet)

Rubble was falling all around them, a manic laugh echoing from a bit up ahead. Haru and Elie panted, grasping their injured arms in preparation for their next attack. 

Elie heard the laugh again, and a loud rumbling that seemed to shake the whole ground. She looked to see the destruction ahead, before turning back to the enemy in front of them. And she knew Haru had to go ahead, to finish the bigger fight and save everyone. 

“We have to hurry,” he breathed. 

Elie shook her head. “You have to hurry.” 

“What?” 

“Go!” Elie cried, pushing him gently. 

“Elie, no way. I can’t leave you here to fight alone.” Haru responded, frantically grasping her arm. 

“I have the power of Etherion, remember?” she said, weakly. 

“You’re tired! I can’t let you get hurt,” he told her, almost begging. 

“Your fight is ahead of us, and you’re the only one who can do it.” Elie said, reaching forward to cup his jaw with her hand. “I believe in you, Haru Glory.” 

Haru leaned into the touch, with wild, anxious eyes. “I can’t lose you,” he whispered. 

“You won’t,” she promised. “I’ll finish this fight, and you have to finish yours.” 

Haru surged forward, resting his forehead against hers, closing his eyes as her hand fell to his shoulder. He brushed her hair behind her ear with trembling fingers. “I’ll come back for you, I promise.” he whispered, holding her tight. 

“Go,” she whispered again, hugging him one more time, before he stepped back, gazing at her, then took off running.

AHHHHHHH!!! Uhmmm so this is definitely going to be me fangirling, but honestly one of the best thing in 2020 was that the full season 1 of The Unsleeping City was put on the Dimension 20 YouTube channel.  I have been following this show since it first started then had to stop because they put the rest of them on Dropout.tv(as they should, but like I couldn’t pay for it sooooo). But now we can talk about Season 1.

This is a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, set in New York City, where magic lies just beneath the surface behind the Umbral Arcana, that hides the magic from mere mortals. The Unsleeping City is the sixth borough (aka Nod) where dreams live and thrive; we visit this land when we sleep. In this campaign, our intrepid heroes must stop Robert Moses from(what do I say here without spoilers...) from misusing the power of dreams for his dastardly plot. 

So why are we talking about this? The storytelling is incredible. The character development is flawless. And the fact that this is a board game, really brings it to life.  The cast is incredible, these are just people playing a board game, but honestly I got so invested because the acting is so amazing. There were definitely moments where I got choked up or cheered( I mean that moment with Esther and Ricky, like if you know, you know and cheered with me). Not only are they incredible actors, but the strategy is on point. Like these people are here to win and have fun. Like Emily, girl, some of the things she thought up I could never in a billion years. Watching Ally play Pete and portray him  so well, making me laugh whenever someone brought up his drug selling; I couldn’t. The stories of Kingston and Kugrash;  Lou and Brian killed those roles, like the museum scene...THE MUSEUM SCENE, y’all wanted me to ugly cry.  Zac’s tiny smirks whenever Ricky’s physique was mentioned was everything and his portrayal made me want to protect Ricky at all costs. And the lovely Misty Moore. Siobhan gave a stellar performance, what a star! She was incredible. And Rowan, what a stellar encore. We love to see it, darling!

Some of these moves were slick and creative and Brennan being an amazing DM, knew when to bend the rules for something cool to happen. I appreciated this because it made it fun and like that is what it is all about, it is a game after all. And seeing them have fun made it super fun to watch. This campaign fueled my imagination and just I watched it wide-eyed under my covers. 

Brennan Lee Mulligan is an evil genius! The fact that he could play so many characters and each has their own story and voices and mannerisms, INSANE!!!! The fact he created this based off of Neverwhere by Neli Gaiman!! I love that book and no wonder it felt familiar, just couldn’t put ,my finger on it at the time. Also I am just biased because I just love stories where magic lives beside the real world, I don’t  know it just makes reality a bit more magical. The depth he put into this story and still managed to make some social commentary, I just can’t even. I just can’t say enough, like this was inspired; I felt like my imagination was having so much fun.  This man is truly a treasure. 

This campaign is incredible and honestly inspired me to write my own one day, first I have to learn how to play and the rules and such. It’s a lot, but honestly it is such a unique way to tell a story and bring it to life.
