I was thinking about the concepts of a god in video games and my favourite depiction of it is in Okami. Because... nobody really knows that you play as the god, in fact, it is a pretty huge plot point that everybody stopped believing in the gods. And then you go around with Amaterasu and help out people... but you don't do it with a big fanfare, you just go there and use a little magic that just looks like it was a coincidence. And then people are like "What just happened?!" and often they talk to Ammy because she is there, but for them, she is just the cute little doggy, but then they give praise because their problem got solved and it all gets to Ammy. And it is like this in the whole game. And not only that, the people react to your shenanigans. If you let a tree bloom in front of them, they have a surprised animation and a question mark over their head and then go back to what they were doing, probably thinking "Well, that was strange." And you keep doing stuff that just isn't logic over the course of the game and then... in the end... they finally believe in Ammy, but only after Issun told them about her. I just... really love the idea that a god is someone who just is around and helps without expecting anything in return and just taking the praise of people who now not have a problem anymore. And the fact that they animated people reacting to random shenanigans and not only people, also every single animal. I just love Okami so much.

Sekiro: Everything was already shit, but hoo boy, you better would not have abducted the one the Shinobi wanted to protect. Elden Ring: Everything went to shit because family drama.

You know, one thing that makes the Soulsborne games so great is the fact that your character is an absolute nobody. You are not supposed to be some godlike being with powers beyond measure or the one who is fated to do great things. Sure, Dark Souls 1 has the Chosen Undead, but it becomes revealed quickly that the Chosen One trope is a farce and so it gets completely subverted. In Dark Souls 2 you are simply the Bearer of the Curse, just one of many who suffer from the curse. In Dark Souls 3 you get told straight up that you were the last they could ask, because you are the loser of the losers. In Bloodborne we play as some unlucky random person who got wrapped up in Yharnam's affair. In Demon's Souls our Slayer straight up gets enslaved to the Nexus out of sheer desperation of the Monumental. And in Sekiro we play as a single Shinobi, who can't take on a whole army himself. So he makes defense to his greatest offense and uses stealth and dirty tricks. Which leaves the Tarnished, the one who is played the most straight. Elden Ring has this amazing opening movie and we get to see the six Tarnished who will probably be the main bosses of the game and... ...one another... Our player character. Here is the thing. It was never meant that our character should win. In fact, in Soulsborne all odds are AGAINST our character. It is the fact that DESPITE everything they win, that is the theme of these games. Our character has only one thing going for them... They can't die. And therefore, only giving up is when they lost. It's a theme of overcoming, a theme of persevering, a theme of fighting a battle that should be unwinable, but isn't. You just have to try it again and again. And that is what I love about these games.

yuuta exhibits such previously abandoned, recently adopted dog behavior. incredibly anxious all the time, even though nobody’s out to get him or leave him behind. waits for you to return home or from school or from work excitedly, just to see you when you walk through the door. follows you around senselessly, hovering in your space just for the sake of companionship. initiates affection in prodding ways—starts off next to you, then a hand on your thigh, then deems it safe to lay all the way down, then slowly pushes his head into your lap. gets up whenever you need to get up, and resumes his position as soon as you’re ready. brings you gifts as a sign that he’s thinking of you, and maybe because he likes the affection it brings out in you, maybe because he likes the gentle affirming touches of a hand in his hair or a pinch to his cheek. rests his head on your stomach or his chin on your shoulder when he’s sleepy, stays there, immobile, and will not move unless absolutely necessary. sometimes he gets surprised when he hears you calling for him, there’s a moment of disbelief as he thinks “me? really? you need me?” but it’s very quickly overshadowed by this compulsive need to show up, to please, to do anything for you, which is why he always answers when you call. he doesn’t realize that he has puppygod eyes, especially when he’s excited or confused, but he does and it’s incredible endearing. very reluctant to share your space or attention after a while, considers that to be sacred and he won’t risk being let go or lost again, so as a safety precaution, he keeps himself right by you, waits for you always.

"BE QUIET!" He yells, grabbing at his magic pen. "You will not speak to me in such a patronising way, ESPECIALLY when you've been hogging all of Lord Malleus's attention this past month!!"

"I... what???" You are, genuinely, so confused. What in the world is he talking about??

"You will not play dumb with me, human." He scowled, pointing the magic end directly at you. "Nobody but I should be allowed to be that close to him. Nobody."

A spell is suddenly cast upon you!?

Everything around you starts to grow larger... as you start to get smaller... and smaller... and smaller... until you're almost smaller than a mouse.

A gloved hand suddenly grasps you, wrapping all the way around you and effectively sealing you off from the outside world...

When the hand ungrasps, you're right in front of his face... uncomfortably close...

"You are but a worm... and I will show you your place."

Sebek lifts you up further, over his upwardly tilted head, holding you only by your arm... and he opens his mouth, lined with sharp and crocodilian teeth.

"W-wait, wha-?! Sebek, what the-?!"

He drops you into his mouth.

Later at Diasomnia dorm, Sebek was feeling proud of himself.

He was feeling proud of himself... until...

"Ah, there you are, Sebek." Malleus approaches from behind. "Have you seen (Y/N)? I have not been able to find them."

"I have not seen them, Lord Malleus." Sebek lies through his teeth.

"How unfortunate... I really wished to talk to them tonight." Malleus sighs, crossing his arms. "I went to Ramshackle dorm, yet I could only find Grim and the ghosts... do you think they went home without telling me?"

"Why would you care so much about some human? And a magicless one at that..."

"You know not what you say."

"I simply don't understand, Lord Malleus! There are plenty of other people to talk to! I'm right here! And if you're so desperate to converse with a human, then there are many others attending Night Raven College besides them!" Sebek explains, angrily.

"You will watch how you speak of them, Sebek Zigvolt."

"Gh-! Y-yes, I apologise, Lord Malleus..." Sebek quiets down, embarrassed.

Malleus leans over, his hands on his knees, before whispering...

"Sebek... do you know where (Y/N) is?" He asks one more time."

"...no... I do not..."

Malleus waves his hand which suddenly, magically, forcefully opens Sebek's mouth. After inspecting Sebek's mouth, Malleus sighs.

"I deeply apologise for this, but it must be done." That's what he says, right before punching Sebek directly in the gut. Malleus did so very carefully, powerful enough to induce regurgitation, though done in a way that actually gave minimal pain.

And out you go, right into Malleus's hands!

You stare up at him, looking frantically between Sebek and Malleus, terrified.

"Tsu...Tsuno...tarou..." You stutter, before bursting out in tears. "UWAAAAAAAHH THAT WAS SO SCARYYYYY-!!"

"Now now, there's no need for tears, little one~" Malleus pets you, like a baby bird... "Let's get you cleaned up, I'll make you a small, bed-like structure on my nightstand so we may keep you safe tonight."

"R-really...? Thank you, Tsunotarou..."

"Sebek." Malleus turned to his... dormmate, his eyes nearly ablaze with green fire of anger. "You are never to do anything like this again, understand?"

"...yes, Lord Malleus." Sebek grumbles, embarrassed because of his actions being found out.
