Yellowjackets fanzine interest form

Might be jumping the gun here, but I made an interest form about a Yellowjackets fanzine!

All the info is in the main bio of the form, but basically, the idea is a free-to-view online fan zine that is a collection of submitted Yellowjackets work such as fanart and fanfiction.

The link to the form can be found here I'll be collecting responses for about three weeks or so, and from there I'll determine if there is enough interest to start a project like this.

Yellowjackets Zine - Applications Open!

You might have seen the poll going around for interest, and well, it convinced me enough to start this up. A zine for Yellowjackets! Yeah!

The plan is to make this a relatively small but hopefully exciting project to cross the current lack of things between seasons. Think you have a good idea? Submit it!

So far I'm thinking of keeping it at max 30 participants, but this mostly comes down to a first-come-first-serve basis. Fear not, I may include you if you have a really cool idea for a submission.

What is a zine? "Zine" is short for magazine. What a Yellowjackets zine would entail is a small, digital booklet with artworks, writing, collages, lists, etc. related to the show that it's all connected to. There are zines that have a print run alongside digital versions, but to keep it all running smoothly, I'd like to keep this digital only. So I can't offer compensation in financial means. This is first and foremost a passion project, and also things would get tricky on a legal front if there were to be any money involved.

So if I want to contribute, it can be anything? Basicallly! But there are some hard rules I would like to be followed for it to stay coherent.

Canon Compliant. Writing or art, hard AUs aren't really something for this zine. It's a little celebration of the show that is there, and tonally there might be too much dissonance if AUs are included in this. Guesses at the yet to be seen months in the Wilderness, or in the present day are very much welcome!

Self-contained works. Putting chapter 1 of your fic in a zine isn't really ideal. For art this is easier to accomplish, but written submissions should be completed within the pages they are on.

Not just shipping. Yes, I know, shipping is big. But like I put in the first point, I would like to keep things more generally on events, plot, characters, and a neat discussion of it. There's of course degrees to how much you can ship within canon in a show like this. It's totally cool if you put something in that is (Basically) Canon (f.e. TaiVan but also JackieShauna) or Has Strong Potential (f.e. LottieLee, MistyNat). Don't come to me with something like Shauna/Walter. Explorations of characters and relationships are of course okay! But don't make it a smut fest.

Nothing too NSFW. This is Cannibalism Show (TM) we're talking about, so there is some leniency. But let's say if you would rate it as E on Ao3, then maybe try to get it a bit lower in rating or think of something different.

(Previously) Unpublished works. This may be a given, but a zine is the most fun when it's full of original content. You are of course free to publish what you made on your own accounts/profiles once the zine is online.

Other than that, it's pretty free to fill in for yourself! What can be published should be able to go in a hypothetically printed magazine, but if you would write fic, and essay, compile a mixtape list, make some meta newspaper article on the events, graphics, collages, a poster design, or banger fanart, it's all up to you as long as it gets you excited to work on it!

I'm splitting them up in written and graphic types of contributions, but there's room to give a pitch for your specific idea.

Practical stuff!

Max wordcount for written contributions should be about 2500 words. I'm not going to be too strict, but keep any overflow within reason.

Graphic works should be able to be displayed well on a 2100x3000px canvas on. This is the size of page I'm using at the moment.

How much time would there be to prep? For now I'm thinking of putting the final deadline on November 30 so hopefully everyone will have time to work on their submission (from scratch). I also gotta get the hang of a publishing design program lol.

Yellowjackets Big Bang

Hi yellowjackets fandom!!

I'm in the works of planning a big bang event! in case you don't know, it's a sort of thing like ship weekend or zine. in this case, writers and artists will be paired together to create something. writers will write a long fic (i've seen events with a 15k word minimum) and will be paired with an artist to work with who will make a piece to go along with the fic.

Part 2 of the Poster Series: Natalie

This logo is seen a lot of different places in Natalie’s room, notably on the wall in a row of alternating sizes. I don’t think it’s available anywhere to purchase as a poster but you should be able to print it out if you want. Sub Pop was Nirvana’s record label.

These are the photos used for Natalie’s Debbie Harry poster but I wasn’t sure which one matched the coloring in the show the best and some of them aren’t as clear.

Yellowjackets Fun Fact: Costume designers drew inspiration from Debbie Harry for some of Natalie’s outfits.

I could not find these anywhere and so I think they might have been created by the props/set department. I especially think this because in the grunge/punk music genre a big part of the culture is about making zines and stuff (which is reminiscent to the style in which the posters are). I think they’re being used to showcase Natalie has an underground taste in music by not having a lot of posters for bigger artists. It also appears there is a Megan J. O’Neil who was the location coordinator for the Pilot of Yellowjackets. This lends credit to the theory that it’s a custom poster because it’s fairly common that those kinds of cameos / easter eggs happen in tv.

This isn’t about the posters but Natalie has the same yellow hoodie as Mari on her chair? I know there’s a couple of these hoodies floating around in the Wilderness but I think this might be the first time a main character is seen with it in their possession. I might be wrong but it’s just something else I noticed while rewatching.

I’ve wanted to be part of a Zine for a while, but I haven’t seen any that catch my interest, or they’ve already closed.

So what if I made my own? What are y’all’s thoughts on a Yellowjackets Zine? It would have art, fanfic, and all kinds of other content in it. I’d just have to figure out how to organize and put it all together

I’ll think about it and if I get the info I need to host and put it together I’ll make an interest form. It wouldn’t happen for a bit, but maybe over summer while I’m off from school

(For those who don’t know, a Zine is a self published magazine like collection of published work that usually has a very small print count)

1996 Yellowjackets and whether they identified as feminists

This is the side result of me pondering how there should be more Bikini Kill in the soundtrack after I saw a teen Nat fanart with a Bikini Kill patch on his jacket.

Jackie: Yes, but it's very much the sugar-coated "girl power" feminism.

Shauna: Yes. She's read The Feminine Mystique and is into the riot grrrl movement.

Van: Yes. She's very much into Les Feinberg and loves reading Dykes to Watch Out for in the local alt-weekly. She also loves Sleater-Kinney.

Tai: She read This Bridge Called My Back and a lot of Crenshaw and Walker to ready herself for Howard's admission process. She identifies as a woman. Once she and Nat were too drunk at a party and discussed how the Riot Grrl movement excluded them.

Nat: He wants to, he does. He loves zines and the "girls to the front" at shows. But he also realizes that the riot grrrl movement doesn't include bi girls from the trailer park who really like it when someone calls them a boy. So not right now.

Lottie: Yes. She loves the riot grrl zines Nat shares with her. Much to Nat's chagrin, she also loves the girl power pumped out by the Spice Girls because she likes being reassured you can be a feminist and still wear a wonder bra.

Misty: Is a girl scout. Naturally.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

various star treks, some original work, and a lone yellowjackets and murderbot diaries fic each. plus some fringe, tho most of those have been perm-anoned

oh yeah and a barbie fairytopia: mermaidia fic that i wrote for a forthcoming zine. y'all aren't ready for that one

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

lol. seeds of order, how shall i touch you unless it is everywhere?, what i have shaped into a kind of life, do you love the colour of the sky?, and bruised hips and salt-stained cheeks

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

if i have something to say, yes. i like it when readers really engage with what's on the page, because so often i have loads of meta or research or lore-building or background info that never made it into the fic but which i'm really excited about and enjoy info-dumping. comments that invite that kind of response are my favorite. i also really like it when they tell me how they felt reading it, or -- if the fic mentions a book -- that they went and read that book. i LOVE that shit and will talk books with people for days.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

discounting all my high school fic, which thankfully is no longer accessible to the public, we do what we do in the dark. love a good fucked up seven/jay fic

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

they pretty much all end happily? but the "happy" that feels most "me" is the end of the way old friends do, where seven leaves to go heal from bjayzl and icheb in her own way, alone, and tom and b'elanna send her off with the assurance they're there when she needs them. that felt very happy and healthy and aromantic to write. and aromantic endings are extremely important to me.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

i have been vagued about, sure. a few flames back in the day

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

yes <3 femslash, always. it's pretty much just friends with benefits and/or angsty alterously attracted grief!sex now. no more romance for me <3 feels good feels organic

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

i write trek crossovers all the time. i'd say my jadzia/raffi fic was pretty gutsy. as was pioneering the b'elanna torres/ro laren/kira nerys tag with a 3k post-canon oneshot on religious doubt and belief.

the weirdest like, true crossover (and only true crossover) i've written was a star trek: voyager/murderbot diaries fusion that i wrote in order to be matchable in a gift exchange. stupidly fun. i did not expect anyone to read that fic but people really really liked it, and i am so thankful for all the kind commenters, because that fic held a lot of personally important elements to me.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

nottt that i know of, and i don't go looking, because that's just a lot of work i don't need in my life

oneshots, nailing the character voices (or knowing when i didn't), pretty sentences, rhythm, lore, sensory details, queering the narrative, smut

finishing shit. also plot. who the hell has the attention span for plot? not me [stares in despair at WIPs]

i'm monolingual, so i don't

probably come on and prove it. i reread it weekly. no one wants to admit they like it on main but i see ur private bookmark count and your 50% guest kudos rate lol. i knocked it out of the park with that one.
