A test run >:)
I really really really like this moment in the books, so I tried my hand at adapting it. I'm not actually particularly happy with it, but I like the idea and that's what a test run is for! It's definitely helped me in learning what not to do lol

Like, a lot of people hold grudges against the so-called “CalArts style” and “bean mouths” and w/e , which I don’t think holds all that much water in the first place because when you look at it more closely, the showrunners that are more “guilty” of it almost all worked in the same shows before making their own and you have to adapt your style to match a show you’re working in. Like, that’s something they literally teach you to do in animation school. But I digress, that wasn’t the point I was trying to make.
The point I WAS trying to make is that certain art styles are more or less in vogue in different periods of time, because of changing aesthetics yes, but also because of the means people had to create cartoons at the time! For example...
30s cartoons were all so wacky and bouncy because it was the start of animation as a medium and its whole appeal was that you were making drawings move in the first place!
40s cartoons, in addition to being used as war propaganda, they were also much more refined in animation, style and humor because people were no longer entertained by simplistic storylines as animation was not as much of a novelty as it was a decade before. That was when Looney Tunes came in!
50s cartoons tended to have very thick lines and be kind of experimental in nature because animation used to be expensive to make, especially in post-war times. It was the start of limited animation as a medium, which culminated in...
60s cartoons! Think Hanna-Barbera. They all had ties and scarves and repeated backgrounds and scenes because by then, limited animation was being widely used to make them on a budget! But it was also when we had other, highly experimental forms of animation too, often psychedelic in aesthetic and not all that aimed at children. This lasted throughout the 70s too.
Now, 80s cartoons were more “realistic” because, not only they were being outsourced to other countries like Japan in order to be made, they were being made mostly to sell toys and their character design had to be as faithful to the toy as possible! People were under the impression kids wouldn’t like it very much complain if their G.I. Joe or their Strawberry Shortcake dolls didn’t look like the ones on TV.
90s cartoons went more experimental again! People who made cartoons had a little more liberty with them, which culminated in them not being made only to sell toys. The creation of channels only intended to broadcast cartoons like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon was definitely an influence on this. There were a lot of “gross-out” humor and wild take inspired art styles, taking inspiration from old 40s Looney Tunes cartoons and pushing them to the extreme.
00s cartoons saw the advent of the computer program Flash, which meant they suddenly were much easier to animate than they were with the usual cel animation method that had been used since the 30s by then. Many shows did a complete jump to being digitally animated back then and, with the puppet animation feature Flash had, many other shows were made with a thick line style and simplistic character designs to take full advantage of it. It was also when CGI became more easy to pull off and, by the end of the decade, even less expensive than 2D animation, which led to many low-budget shows in 3D. Not only that, but Japanese anime had finally become mainstream in the west, which led some Western cartoons to adopt anime-ish art styles and influences, such as Teen Titans and Totally Spies. The 00s were very influential!
Now, 2010 cartoons, which are the ones we currently have until 2020 rolls around and we start all over again, have lots of interesting qualities! The anime influence seems to have settled down pretty well, so we have tons of cartoons that have been very visibly influenced by it, especially when it comes to detailed eye styles. Cel animation is pretty much completely unused by now, everything is animated digitally. 3D animation has advanced and has more ‘appeal’ than ever and look as pleasing to the eye as 2D animation does. Flash shows are not as widely used, but they’re still popular and we saw a rise in shows experimenting with more simplistic styles and more rich, complex storylines, which is a complete opposite of the 80s’ complex art styles and simple stories. I don’t really have to give many examples here, but you’ll know exactly what I mean when you look at shows like Gravity Falls, Adventure Time and Steven Universe, to name a few. In most recent years, rubberhose-inspired animation is also making a comeback! It’s definitely something to look out for when the 20s roll along if it takes off.
Anyway, I kinda rambled here but what I meant to say was that, for as much as we might not personally like certain animation trends and wish we could go back to our “roots”, whatever that means, they’re what makes animation so characteristic of the time they were made in. Nostalgia blinds us a lot. Things we thought were fantastic when we were kids don’t hold up all that well if we rewatch them as adults. Things change! Time marches on! And that’s great! In a few years, I bet some of us will be complaining about whichever style it’s currently in vogue and going on and on about how the “CalArts style” was so much better.

The girl herself!!!!
You know the drill by now, design notes under the cut
I don't... actually have a ton to say about the outfit, most of it was just simplifying. I did try to make sure she contrasted with Raven as much as possible without being too cartoonish. Raven has a lot of long sharp shapes, so Apple has short round shapes. I actually drew from the books for both of their physiques; Raven is very lanky and thin while Apple has broad hips and a curved figure. Apple is shorter, but the heels put them at eye level.
Fun smaller details-
I tried to put in some apple seed shapes wherever it fit, mainly in her earrings and jacket sleeves.
I wanted to make sure her jaw was very defined 1. Because it just makes for a more distinct face shape and it felt fitting and 2. Because her cheekbone genes are absolutely ridiculous and I wanted it to look like she could believably grow into her mom's facial features as she aged
She probably has the heaviest makeup of any character I've designed so far. I basically just took the design from the show for this- heavy dark eyelashes, the pinkest blush, and bright red lips. I actually struggle a lot with drawing lipstick in particular, but it feels so right for her character to always be wearing that famous "red as blood" color.
I know that Gala is missing, but frankly I didn't want to draw her lmao. I also don't know how necessary she is, as much as I like her, because Apple is already attended by like a million woodland critters anyways
I have so many thoughts on her character but honestly it's not particularly different from her existing portrayals, so I'm not going to go into it here because I don't have anything new to say that wouldn't apply before.

As per usual, info under the cut <3
IM BACK BITCHES!!!
Alright, here's the design stuff:
I wanted to go for kind of a Lois Lane vibe, including the way she gets all the way up in business she should not be up in. At the same time I wanted to bring the super cutesy gothic lolita style in at least a little. So I ended up going with a poofy short jumpsuit with bows and teddy bears. I would love to make a specific thank you to @themooncallsyou for suggesting I look at the Moschino 2022 spring line for inspiration, it ended up having a very heavy impact on the final design.
I tried to lean into the investigative part of investigative reporter, so that's what the heavy coat is about. I thought adding that classic detective silhouette would be a nice final touch. Plus, I think Blondie likes the drama of the coat flying behind her as she's chasing down a lead. It makes her feel very cool.
Alright, so her original pet is a bear cub named Grizz but I have. Several problems with that. The main one is that it's not clear what the difference between Grizz and the actual sentient bears and her story is. There is never any differentiation between them. It's a Goofy-Pluto situation. Like it doesn't need to be explained, but the minute you start thinking about it too hard it gets weird real fast.
Anyways say hello to Honey the magpie!! Magpies are great mimics and lovers of shiny things, so I thought one would be a perfect fit for Blondie. She repeats bits of gossip and steals little trinkets and clues to help Blondie with whatever case she's on. Honey is where Blondie gets her infinite supply of bobby pins. Her scale is a little off, I don't think magpies are actually that big, but I still think she's cute so I'm not changing it now lol.
Now for character stuff:
Honestly I'm not really changing anything as much as I am exploring what's already there. I think Blondie has the potential to be really interesting, because she's unique within the class system of the school. She's kind of the inverse of Raven status-wise. Raven was born to royalty, but because her mom is the Evil Queen she's actually considered a commoner by society. Blondie was born to a wealthy commoner family, but her fear of rejection leads her to exaggerate the prestige of her lineage. Everyone sort of knows that she's not a Princess but she's so desperate to keep up the image of royalty that no one knows where she actually lands. Most of the royals assume her parents are Lord and Lady or Duke and Duchess or something. In reality they don't have any noble title, and Blondie is very insecure about that.
Blondie isn't so much ashamed of her family as she is terrified of exclusion and rejection. Her standing in society is the one major thing that makes her different from all the other royals, but she has major anxieties that she's always on thin ice. In her mind she's permanently one wrong step from total ostracization.
Tumblr media
On a happier note, she does have a genuine passion for journalism! She considers her news blog/podcast practice for her future career. She starts out discussing school drama and gossip, but tries to stay a neutral third party. That's why her hair is so big. It's full of secrets. As the story goes on she starts reporting on more political and social topics beyond the boundaries of the school (and therefore becomes one of Milton Grimms worst nightmares). She is really, really, really good at getting into shit people do not want her to get into. She's got her eyes on prize and good luck stopping her

Anyways drawing Spring Unsprung Briar gave me a wild amount of creative energy so here's my pitch for a Spring Unsprung Darling costume
Some details just for fun under the cut:
•Since Lizzie is the designer of the original SU outfits, that's also the case here. Lizzie is perceptive enough of Cerise and her style to very specifically fit her needs without even knowing what those needs are (heavy hood, long hair, big jacket, all very good for keeping covered, no?). The same would happen with Darling. Lizzie might pick up on her fascination with Wonderland, the jewelry fashioned like chainmail or bracers, and decide to incorporate it into her design. I don't know if Lizzie even realizes how perceptive she is, she just has an eye for what brings out someone's real personality.
•In terms of actual design, my main inspiration was chess! I let go of the literal shape pretty fast, but I really liked the idea of her looking like a fancy chess piece as a nod to her wonderland shenanigans. Cerise, Kitty, Lizzie, and Cedar all have black and white recurring patterns with 1-3 main colors, so I tried to mimic that here. I mostly just used the color scheme from my ref sheet I did a hot minute ago
•The hair flowers and colorful makeup were non-negotiable of course. I did want to make the flowers have some kind of relevance, but in the end I just gave up and made 'em generic yellow flowers. Any flower symbolism nerds who want to throw their hat in the ring be my guest!!
•I basically just tried to orient the whole thing around asymmetry and reflection, and I think that worked really well in this case, I think it really makes her pop
•She isn't wearing her typical Charming crest, but the symbol is spread out in a couple of pieces. Heart gem at the center of the neck like normal, and the wing is made into one of those ear cuff things
•The background was just kind of a whim, but there is a reason for it. I decided a while ago that the Charming family animal is a lion, so any heraldry or heirloom or anything like that is probably gonna have that winged heart and/or lion imagery on it. If Daring is the peak of the Charmings, then Daring is a lion. Similarly, Darling is a borzoi. It's just different enough to communicate that she's the black sheep of the family, but has enough similar traits to make it clear that she's not in opposition with them. Plus I think borzois are whimsical as hell with the right lighting and I thought it would look neat
•You can see it right in the corner of one of her eyes, I was playing with maybe giving her partial heterochromia? I think I'm gonna stick with just brown eyes but I'm keeping the concept tucked away in the back of my brain for another character

EAH was one of my very favorite cartoons as a kid, and I've been enjoying it's renaissance very much, so REDESIGNS!!! (I've done a bunch over a couple months and put them on Instagram, but I figured I'd move them here cause Instagram sucks, so if you've seen them before over there that's why)
I think the original designs are aesthetically pleasing, but they're not super practical for the characters- case in point! Gay icon Darling Charming
I'm gonna put all my design notes under the cut so if you don't care about that carry on, have a nice day
Darlings original design is fun, but it doesn't serve an obvious purpose, at least not that I can see. She clearly wears armor on the outside of her outfit, the Marie Antoinette poof is a bit strange to me, and she has very little visually tying her to Dexter and Daring. I wanted to emphasize her secrecy, but also her passion for puzzle solving, riddles, combat tactics, ect. when she's around the people she trusts (as if the queer metaphor wasn't obvious enough)
Here are some details that just make me happy
-First, the hair. I knew I wanted to give the White Knight a more unique look, and I wanted to simplify it overall. I LOVE the original armor, but it would be a huge pain to animate, and I don't have the patience for that, so I went for a masquerade-ball-three-musketeers-vibe. The braided bun is still a fancy, regal style, but it's a lot easier for her to manage in her uniform
-I tried to synthesize the color schemes of the Charming siblings. They all have a pit of yellow, a bit of pinkish red, a bit of blue. The twins lean heavy into yellow and blue, with splashes of red where thematically appropriate. Darling doesn't really communicate with Daring much, so she has the least amount of red. I think having more muted colors in comparison to her brothers also emphasizes the fact that she's hiding herself. She is very much defying her family with her ambitions, and she has to work hard to keep it under wraps. Sort of related, I gave her a tooth gap, because it's a cute design detail, but also to act as a "flaw" to contrast with Daring. Daring's primary physical trait is his ungodly perfect teeth, so I thought it'd be fun to give her an "imperfect" trait, like Dexter and his glasses. There's nothing actually wrong with them, but it's a failure to reach the insane expectations that the Charming family has cultivated over the generations. Basically the Charmings are petty and I feel bad for the youngest generation.
-Speaking of concealment! There are a couple bits that I thought would be fun to hide throughout her outfit. First, the skirt is flowy enough and the shirt is positioned just right so that you can't tell, but she has pieces of leather armor on at all times. She saves the plates for wonderland. She also wears gloves to hide the callouses on her fingers from swordfighting! She also probably keeps knives in her hair somewhere. Pulling a small switchblade out of the base of her bun just seems like something she would do
-Final thing, I gave her a scar! From what I can tell, she's always been very rough-and-tumble, so I gave her a scar over her brow. She likes to pretend it's from a Mysterious Incident to mess with her friends, but really she was wrestling Daring when they were like, 4 and 6, and she bonked her face into a table. She got over it real fast, but Daring got a long lecture about it, and that's when he started getting over-protective about her

The queen herself!
design notes under the cut
alright, let's get started with the outfit-
The thing is that Ravens outfit is really cool, but it is a PAIN to draw, at least for me. There are some small details that come from them having to fit doll molds that drive me crazy, like the fact that Ravens shoes don't have heels but she walks like they do
I also had gotten really, really bored of drawing skirts, so pants it is
Ravens look is majority black with purple and silver accents, but I tweaked it a bit so that purple is the primary color, just for fun
The feathers were cool, but I wanted to save them for fancier looks, so instead I went with dragon wing style clamps on her jacket. It always bugged me that she was the first character with a dragon and that she didn't have any draconic features on her
Alright, so this is my explanation for the way she dresses in this interpretation- she doesn't want to be seen as evil, but her wardrobe is literally cursed to make any and all clothes she tries on as much like her mother's as possible. So she has to try and mold it to her own style, like "ok what's the most normal thing in here" but she's going through Goth Skeletor's closet and this is what she's managed to put together. I'd say she did pretty good! Cravat is a little much though
Yes she only wears one glove, that's on purpose. It was gonna be that the gloved hand is her primary spellcasting hand, but I immediately ruined that, so now I guess that's just something Raven thinks looks cool
Ok now the more character lore stuff
That weird little skull nightmare next to her is Prince! I don't have and have never read the books, but I have spent a lot of time going over wiki pages to try and find details I can incorporate into these designs. Apparently when Raven was a little kid her dad got her a puppy which she called Prince. At some point her mom decided it was unfitting for an evil princess and transformed him into whatever the hell a bone rat is. Needless to say, traumatizing. I can't stand a single even vaguely negative thing happening to a dog, so I'm deciding that Prince is alive, kind of immortal since he's undead-ish, and maintains the same memory and personality. He lives with Raven's dad when she's at school and he's a very good boy, he's just really, really weird.
Yeah I don't know where I'm gonna fit Nevermore in, I think she's just gonna have to join the canon with the rest of them in Dragon Games, cause I like Prince way more conceptually tbh
Evil Raven cause why not. I actually have some ideas on how the queen lineage would work, especially because Raven seems to completely control every aspect of her powers after signing in Way Too Wonderland. I really like the idea that as the next queen grows they gain more magic, but because they siphon it from the previous generation. Raven had a natural affinity for basic spells her whole life, but after a certain age she started to take her mom's powers, which are the new ones she can't control. Plus, I like that angle on the whole jealousy thing. The Queen isn't just bitter that Snow White is more fair than her, it's the double whammy of knowing that no matter what she does, her power will be drained away and made pointless by both Snow and her own family. Usurping based angst

Aaand that's three in a row where I've basically ignored canon and started from scratch
design notes under the cut
Alright, starting from the top-
I always found Meeshell kind of bland, so I worked from the concept up. I wanted to lean into a different aspect of the original story, so I skimmed over the Anderson version, and here's what I came up with!
First off, I'm changing the rules. She has to be entirely submerged in water to access her mermaid form, no h2o shenanigans, I'm sorry
Second, we're giving her a new conflict, one centered around her story. In the original fairy tale the Little Mermaid is the youngest of many sisters, and she desires humanity the most.
We get the wanderlust and the romance a lot, but there's one characteristic that gets glossed over a lot- mermaids don't have souls. So, we're gonna take that shit and RUN with it. I'm thinking like... The Last Unicorn. There is a fundamental difference in how mermaids and other creatures experience emotion. For mermaids it's just... Less. She's not miserable or even unhappy necessarily, she's just kind of on autopilot compared to a human. She doesn't feel much at all, and what she does experience is very dampened
Then, she gets her human form, and the full spectrum of emotion is opened up to her. Mer Mishelle is quiet, unexpressive, generally apathetic. She's still Michelle, with Michelle opinions and Michelle thoughts, but all the flavor has been drained out of her.
Another piece of original canon I'm bringing in is that the floor is knives. Not really, but Michelle experiences a lot of fatigue and pain if she tries to walk for too long, so she's an ambulatory wheelchair user (the wheelchairs name is Coral)
She knows that her story involves putting her fate in someone else's hands in a time where she won't be able to communicate the way she prefers, so she kind of takes after Briar. She's not gonna waste a damn minute. She's super confident, and bubbly, and hyper-chatty, and has almost 0 filter! She's going to say what she thinks for as long as she can as loud as she can!!!

Ok I'm not gonna lie this is one of my favorite ones. Details under the cut
Alright, this was a fun one
First, I went HARD on the wolf imagery. Ramona is very much big bad and bold, so the gold spikes and teeth emphasize her pride in playing the role of the Bad Wolf. For the Wolfs I have some magic rules- for Ramona and Cerise the furry ears are permanent, Ramona has permanent canines while Cerise can grow them, they can both turn into full wolves if desired, and they can both sharpen their nails into claws. Cerise is built in a way that hides all these traits, Ramona dresses herself in a way that flaunts them.
I wanted to go for like- a punk lumberjack that is also evil for fun *cough* (and also gay)*cough*
I took the red streak out of her hair because it's a little hard to keep track of in this style, but I added some lore about it. I decided that the silver streak in Cerise's hair is a genetic Hood trait, which Ramona also inherited. She has to dye it in order to avoid suspicion. It's the same reason she keeps her hair wild and wears such heavy makeup. Those are methods of expression, yes, but they're also to make her look as dissimilar to Cerise as possible.
This version of Ramona is a lot more "concerned big sister". She doesn't like the secrecy of their family, and maintains a public rivalry with Cerise, but she's a lot nicer than most people know (e.g. The Justine Dancer webisode). She goes out of her way to get into trouble so that she's as far from Cerise as possible, minimizing their chances of being caught. She also delights in irritating Milton Grimm, so bonus points for that

"OFF WITH THEIR HEAD!!!" -The girl who has literally never done anything wrong ever
design notes under the cut
Wonderland Design Choices
Two toned hair TWO TONED HAIR TWO TONED HAIR
what can I say I like the different colored eyebrows look
Ok so she's more Elizabethan than Victorian, I had to, sue me
She does have a birthmark over her eye, but unlike her mother's it's just wiggly circle shaped, so she paints the heart around it
Lizzie Design Choices
I put hearts everywhere. I think my favorite is the ruffled collar that folds into a bajillion hearts
the bun at the back of her head is tied into the shape of a heart
Had to keep her iconic black and red, and she has quite a lot of gold, so I kept that too, and stretched it over her whole design. I tried to contrast the black and white elements to draw attention to her face
Big fancy royal fur cape because why not

Tbh I'm only separating these kids because I have so many notes on each of them and I don't want to make a post 100000 words long anyways here's my boy, details under the cut
Honestly, didn't change a ton about him, I just bumped his nerd level up a few notches. His original design gives off hipster vibes, and I just don't like that for him, so I pushed it to a soft academia look, similar for what I tried to do for Darling.
-Kept his big goofy glasses, apparently if he takes them off people start fainting (I don't remember if that's a book thing or where I got it but I love it, it makes him a romcom protagonist who has to let his hair down and put some eyeliner on and that's so funny to me), but also his eyes don't work the way they should, he can't comprehend what he's seeing without them.
-Added a pin to his bow to match Darlings, its my version of the crest for the primary Charming line, based off of the hair piece Darlings original design wears, and all the Charmings wear it. Including fancy wing cufflinks!
-Hes basically Daring but nerdier and lankier design-wise. Same hair, but brunette and disheveled, not quite styled right. I took his hipster scarf and made it a normal scarf of Daring's signature red to show how being compared to Daring constantly weighs on him. It also gives him something to fiddle with, and he can wrap it around his neck/face a bunch when he's nervous, which I thought would be a cute character detail
-Darling has more blue with yellow accents, Dexter has more yellow with blue accents. Equal and opposite
-He is Crowned Royalty but he also Wears Khakis

Twins twins twins
I put the O'Hair twins together because I just have less thoughts about each of them. Speaking of-
These redesigns come with a bit of a rewrite that I'll make a post for one day because I'm way too invested in the fact that this show had so much POTENTIAL DAMMIT
But the relevant thing for Poppy is the definition of a rebel. I scrapped Roybel altogether. The Rebel/Royal divide doesn't seem to actually impede friendships in most of the show, and Poppy's values all align with being a rebel. So here's my take-
A Royal is anyone who fundamentally believes that following a destiny is the moral obligation of any person who has one, and that denying that will lead to destruction, and harm other people in their story.
A Rebel is anyone who supports the idea that anyone should be able to choose whether or not they follow their destiny, and that it is morally bankrupt to force people into a life they don't want.
By that definition, both twins are rebels, because Holly supports Poppy in her decision to abandon her destiny. (Even though I forgot to put the rebel symbol with Holly) Anyways! Design things!
-For Holly I went for a ballet/cottagecore look, to balance out Poppy's more alternative look. I gave her more of a nature motif and some lettuce leaf patterns as a nod to Rapunzs name. Overall very pink, very rosy, very soft. I also changed her pet. It's originally a lion cub that magically never grows up, which is cute, but I really wanted an animal that could help her with her hair. So, I changed Clipper to a dove. He flies around and helps with Holly's hair Cinderella Style!
-For Poppy I went super alternative. Holly and Poppy are both stylists, but they go into different fields. Holly is good at classical hairstyles and decor, Poppy is very experimental with hair and fashion. Dyes, piercings, hand-stitched clothing, jewelry, the works. I also HAD to include Barber, she's so cute, I love her so much. Yes Barber helps with Poppy's ridiculously complex dye jobs.

"I'm having a wonderful time!" (She was not having a wonderful time)
Design notes under the cut
Alright! Can you tell from this outfit that I don't know jack about fashion. Fashion means you put corset and whatever else you can think of, right?
I tried to do a bit of a weird thing where her royal status is shown, but her outfit is more conducive to being out in the woods. I thought about it kind of like those theatre dresses, but way less complex. She can switch between casual and nice as quick as she needs to just by pulling her jacket off. "I'm going into the woods for very normal reasons by myself entirely alone!" She said, taking off her outer layer to reveal a nice date outfit like a panicked theater kid trying to master a quick-change
I fully changed her pet Sandella, I wish I could say there was some super in-depth reason for it, but honestly, I really didn't want to draw a bird. A cow is much more her mellow personality I decided. (Everybody say thank you to @hoofpeet's cow drawings for giving me inspiration on how I would draw said cow)
Apparently Ashlynn gets her clothes turned into rags every noon, which is wildly inconvenient, and would probably be much more annoying if your teacher held the period for ten extra minutes before releasing you to lunch. I like to think that her state of dress has been used as an emergency clock for students rushing by.
I actually didn't plan this, it just happened, but I realized afterwards that I had made her flower crown pastel pink, blue, and white. Now, that doesn't have to mean anything, but I'm deciding it totally does and Transfemme Ashlynn Canon
(I know she's not confirmed canonically trans in the show/books. I do not care. Anyone who wants to debate me because they're mad that I'm expressing a headcanon can argue with the wall)
