Yor Briar, Yor, and Yor-san
I was reading an excellent post about the nuance in the original japanese and now I thought I’d take a crack at what this means for Loid (although other people have already made an excellent analysis on this).
Loid has only called her Yor Briar in the beginning and when he was suspecting her of playing him. But Fiona’s insistence on her full name, Yor Briar, and her notice of Loid’s seemingly stubborn refusal to use it seems to me that Loid had always previously referred to assets by their full name. It could also be pragmatic in that he knows Fiona wants the ‘role’ of his wife hence her stubborn insistence of using Yor’s maiden name, so he uses Yor-san to counter Fiona’s way of delegitimizing Yor’s role. But I don’t think Loid can sense the real reason for Fiona’s insistence, so while in his view Fiona may be acting unprofessionally, generally speaking, I think Loid would be the one acting unprofessionally in constantly using ‘Yor-san’ to refer to his ‘wife’ to his WISE colleagues especially if he didn’t use to do that before (which yeah it’s hard to imagine him addressing his other marks that way).
Although the audience knows that Fiona is acting far from being professional, with Loid’s limited knowledge of her feelings, wouldn’t she actually have a point in referring to Yor as YOR BRIAR in a working setting? Because isn’t that all she was supposed to be? An asset or a tool? And yet Loid seems annoyed by that and insists on humanizing her by calling her, Yor-san.
Now someone might say, that’s nothing to make a big deal about. It would have been a big deal had he referred to her as ‘just’ Yor without the honorific. Because using someone’s name without honorifics is supposed to connote a deeper sort of intimacy. But that’s the thing. It would have been a forced intimacy for show. ‘Yor’ is his mode of address when he’s putting on a show of being a loving husband, complete with that <fake> Loid Forger voice. Yor is what he calls her around her colleagues or his colleagues (Nightfall undercover as Fiona at the hospital) to present how they’re a completely ordinary, close and loving family. In a way, it’s a subtle cue to Yor as well that they’re in ‘family’ mode now or ‘husband-and-wife’ mode. Yor denotes her as being a mask.
Which is actually why Yor-san is perfect. If Yor Briar is her as an asset, Yor is her as a mask, then Yor-san is her as a partner. He’s used women to get to his goal before. The only thing different now is Anya and the fact that on some level he is also working together with Yor. Had he actually succeeded in his first honeytrap attempt with Yor when he thought she had fallen in love with him, I imagine that he might have started treating Yor the same way he did his other assets before. But thank goodness it didn’t succeed, and in my view, he ended up falling into the trap instead.
Yor-san is perfect because it parallels the way Yor calls him. It’s perfect because it conveys the perfect level of intimacy. They’re not actually a lovey-dovey couple as ‘Yor’ would imply, but unfortunately for Nightfall, she’s also not just ‘YOR BRIAR’ another tool to him. It’s perfect because it conveys respect which Loid has a healthy amount of for Yor. If he can help it, he doesn’t like using her. And Nightfall is right to be worried that this comfortable mode of address of Loid’s is bleeding over to Twilight as if to blur the two. Loid is supposed to be an entirely different person or character so what does it mean that Twilight also calls his wife the same way Loid does? ‘Yor-san’ and ‘Loid-san’ are partners in a lot of ways. Yor-san is whom he can let down his guard down around, and someone this perfectionist spy can ask help from and rely on.
So what about Yuri Briar? He doesn’t know the true nature of Yor and Loid’s arrangement. Shouldn’t he be calling her Yor in front of him to keep up the ruse? Again, I think part of it is pragmatic. He doesn’t want to further aggravate the siscon. But especially in light of Chapter 86 and Volume 10’s inner cover, I think (at least unconsciously) it’s because Yuri is family. I notice that Twilight hasn’t even kept up the Loid persona as much in front of Yuri anymore (which tbf can’t blame him cause how do you even react to Yuri) but it’s not as if Yuri is someone to be underestimated. Some way or the other, even if he doesn’t fully realize it, I think Twilight is starting to treat Yuri like how Yor treats him or at the very least he can’t treat him like any other enemy or bystander because he’s someone important to Yor. Which again as CH 86 would show, Fiona has already noticed, and Twilight himself is angry at himself about. I don’t think Twilight has realized any sort of feelings for Yor yet, but I guess to Fiona, his mode of address for her is and has always been telling.
It’s actually interesting to think that perhaps it’s when he’s calling her ‘Yor-san’ that he’s most like himself - like Loid, Twilight and the boy before there was Twilight all at once - with her.

Fiona tells Anya that licking rocks can hydrate you if you don’t have access to water. Anya goes to school and tells all her classmates the fact. Damian immediately calls bullshit. He goes and vents to Demetrius about it. Demetrius says that it's actually true and a well-known survival trick. He gives a clearly made-up scientific explanation that just confuses Damian. He calls it dumbmosis. Damian shares his findings with the rest of the class. He also shares some additional survival tips he got from Demetrius (claiming them as his own knowledge, of course). Suddenly, Damian and Anya keep going back and forth with nonsense facts they get from their respective older siblings (well, proxy in Anya's case). Mr. Henderson stops them before they start eating old table gum from the library (to gain the past chewers' knowledge, of course). He tells their parents. Loid is immediately confused as to why Fiona would just lie to Anya like that. Yor is oddly quiet about it. He tells Yuri about it, and Yuri is shocked. Half the lies Fiona and Demetrius said were stuff Yor told him. He keeps a rock in his locker. Yor gaslights everyone. The end.

but Yuri also did the same during his first visit so Fiona will probably do same thing eventually.... maybe when she becomes close enough to the Forgers.

Everyone’s talking about that P.O.W. line from the most recent chapter so I’m going to throw in my own (maybe crazy) theory:
It’s not about Anya’s parents. It’s about Yor’s.
Ok, hear me out: based on everyone’s ages, I would guess this takes place either just before the adults in the main story were born, or were very little. This flashback storyline seems to be taking place near the start of the war, however we shouldn’t assume that the rumoured experimentation wasn’t happening before the war started, either. So what if this experimentation wasn’t about getting a telepath, but rather a super soldier?
We know Yor lived in East Neilsberg but I don’t believe it’s been explicitly stated that her family is from there. Her mother was likely “from the South” due to her using a customary ingredient from that area in a recipe but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s from Southern Ostania. She could have come from the southern border region in Ostania/Westalis. On top of that, if either one or both parents weren’t from Ostania, it may explain why she has (supposedly) no other extended family within Ostania who could have helped her raise Yuri. No aunts or uncles, grandparents, cousins… Not even family friends or third cousins once removed. Have they all died due to the war/sickness/etc. or do they just not live in the country?
So, what if either both parents or at least just her mother were taken in as prisoners of war (either from being soldiers for Westalis or maybe even civilians from a border town swept away in the chaos). The experiments were to try and gain a Winter Soldier-esque weapon of war, and then preferably more of them to create an army. The experiments were extreme and killed most of the test subjects but Yor’s mother survived. And what if it was because she was pregnant?
She gave birth to a beautiful little girl, and then thanks to what the bastards had done to her and her motherly instincts being turned up to eleven, she breaks out with her child before they could determine if the experiments had any effect on the baby. Yor’s parents then escape to a quiet corner in the southeast of Ostania, believing it to be too risky to try to get back to Westalis. They raise their little girl with kindness and love, trying as hard as they could to give her a life free from the horrors they faced themselves. Eventually, they have a second child and all seems well. Both of their children are bright and happy and strong… Perhaps a little too strong in the case of the daughter. Even their son is more resilient than most kids. But their abilities aren’t the things that would make them the weapons those researchers wanted: it was who they were as people. And Yor is such a compassionate, innocent little girl despite her ability to bend inch-thick metal at the age of seven. And Yuri is so passionate and loving despite his ability to bounce back so quickly from broken bones.
But then they’re discovered. The parents do what they must to protect their children, and it works…but they don’t come home that night. Or the next night. Or the next.
Yor realizes what must have happened - that her parents had died while they were out running errands - and it left her in charge of the household. (And to go deeper: because their parents were trying to hide from the Ostanian government, they didn’t carry accurate identification so in the event something like this happened, officials wouldn’t be led back to their children. This is why no one discovered that there were two now-orphaned young children living alone and either forced them into a relative’s custody or an orphanage.)
And from there, we get to what we do know: Yor struggled to take care of Yuri until she was discovered by Garden. Her natural strength came in handy (but I also maintain that Shopkeeper also looks for specific personalities as well, so Yor’s unwavering bravery and her deep capacity for empathy and kindness also were key) and she was trained up to be on of the best assassins in Ostania. Garden would have done a great job in ensuring her super strength remained hidden by training her to control it better. It also would have provided the necessary cover and support to keep her and Yuri from falling into suspicion from the government.
Due to their desire to protect their children, Yor’s parents never talked about what happened to them. As far as she and Yuri are concerned, they were born in Ostania and are citizens of Ostania. (And technically that is the case for them both, although Yor’s birth certificate was forged since the scientists in the lab didn’t care enough about a baby that may not even live for very long to create one.) How they find any of this out, I’m not sure, but it opens up some interesting plot beats.
Yor would find out her strength really is unnatural, and that she’s technically a human test subject (but that would also further deepen her connection with Anya, and maybe would mean Anya would be more willing to open up to Yor if she hasn’t already). Yuri would discover that the country he’s been sacrificing so much for has not only tortured and experimented on his parents (and sister) but also is the reason they were orphaned (and all the hardships that came with that). Maybe there’s a chance then that one or both parents actually survived, and are just waiting for another conflict to be trotted out as the weapons that they are. Or there are relatives in Westalis who are more than thrilled to be reunited with their lost family.
(And this would work logically for the type of experiments these shady labs were doing: during wartime and the build up to it they would focus on things that would put them ahead of their enemy from a weapons standpoint. Focusing on boosting their armies’ capacities would be the priority at the start of the war. But toward the end, and then going into the Cold War, they would shift to intelligence-based research. Anya’s telepathy and Bond’s future sight would be more beneficial in a war of intelligence than an actual war, hence the shift toward that around the time that Anya was born. And I know Code: White isn’t technically canon but there’s a particular character in that movie that further suggests that Ostania was trying very hard to turn people into weapons.)
So yeah, that’s my theory (this became a much longer post than I first thought it would be).

(Spoiler chapter 103)
I found it’s interesting both Yuri and Yor have the different mindset even though both of them had living since a child. This make me think, Yor and Yuri didn’t spending much time much to watch TV or sometimes, even have a talk together.
Tumblr media
Yuri and Loid both works for different shady origination. But, Yuri was more brainwashed by propaganda and violence in his group. And his mindset was still the world is not in peace.
This was completely opposite to Yor,too. She was working as a kid and might try to hide everything she could due to her indentity. She work at night to easily hide the blood or evidence and it’s could be bring lot of rumors.
But since working underground for a while maybe it’s made Yor unaware of how the world going ( there are lot of protest and terrorist around )
This made me think that of my theory of since when Yuri was little, ( there was a visual fan comic from Korean artist that fan of Yuri has make a story that has exactly what I thought ) he was bullied from ppl around him. He was bad mouth by kids and people surrounding him rumors Yor “ working late at night”. He might defend Yor by punching those kids, then got scolded because of being “violent”.
But he was silent and endure by himself to kept secret with Yor because he wants to handle this by himself. Even so, his mind only building up to revenge, to eliminate the bad deeds from joining sss when he was growing up.
Yuri only focus in studying, cannot spending much time as a normal kid do. And Yor also working until night and cannot be a normal kid too. And this end up making them try to silence to each other.
Because even for Yor, how many stressed of her assassin job to handle so young, but coming back home to see the kid that she is willing to protect open a big smile, that’s all the world she needs. And Yuri knows it, he knows his smile enlightening Yor a lot.
That’s why even he was having a bad day or not feeling well, he never telling Yor because he doesn’t wants to worry her. The same as Yor endure her pains and not saying anything to telling Yuri.
This make me think Yuri was more parallel to Loid more because Loid also was used to think about how the world is cruel to him. Of course until he meet Franky and changed his mind. And now with Anya and Yor, it’s claim him down more to be relaxed.
It’s quiet sad for Yuri case because he’s still in the stage to not accepting the world is still peaceful for him yet with all the negativity of his works are bringing.
But then, his shown of concern for Anya has changed him, a liitle. Then, Chloe also started to giving him a different direction to his goal. It’s slow but it’s progressing.

Anime only watchers and people who aren't caught up with the Manga, BEWARE... Cuz I'm about to discuss Spy X Family Mission 89... You have been warned...! 👌
[SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON]
OH MY GOSH, WHAT A GREAT CHAPTER!! 😆 (And a funny one as well!! 😂)
This chapter has probably become a new favorite of mine, so let's talk about it...!! 😄
Today's chapter follows one of my favorite characters in the series...
MY BOY, YURI BRIAR...!!! 😆
Tumblr media
And he's been reflecting on the events of the previous arc, disappointed that he couldn't stop Twilight... Officer Scarface tells Yuri to stop sulking over it because at least he was able to injure Twilight, so now the SSS is looking for anyone with bullet wounds in their right arms (which means that Twilight has to be EXTRA CAREFUL not to slip up in anyway... 😩)
As Yuri and Officer Scarface are just going about their day, Chole (happy to see her again 😆) is about to interrogate a man with a gun shot wound in his right arm... And, um...:
Tumblr media
THEY DIDN'T EVEN HESITATE!! DAMN...!!🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
But Scarface tells Yuri to just go ahead and assist Chole with the interrogation, which goes as you'd expect from Yuri when he does his job... 😅
Tumblr media
THAT FACE ALONE IS ONE OF THE MANY REASONS I WOULD NOT WANT TO MESS WITH YURI (or the the Briar siblings in general...!! 😵)
Anyway, after interrogating that guy, Yuri and Chole go to investigate the address that Yuri scared out of him... And on their way there, find out that Chole and Yuri WENT TO SCHOOL TOGETHER!! 😆
Tumblr media
If doesn't full more fire for Chloroform (the Yuri x Chole ship name that saw from @tare-anime 😁) to be even more of a thing, then I don't know what will...!! 👌😌
As they drive to their destination, Yuri can sense Yor (and by sense, I mean smell 😅) walking by and immediately ducks down. Chole questions why he did that since they aren't even wearing their uniforms and could've just told Yor that they were dating...!! 😏 But Yuri declined that idea because he still wants to do whatever he can to help Yor like what she did for him... And then, Chole says something that I agree with:
Tumblr media
I don't know when or how, but I hope that Yuri will one day leave the SSS (like how I hope that Yor and Loid leave their jobs or just retire someday) and hopefully find happiness...! 😊
Moving on from that, they find the place that they were looking for and Yuri rushes in guns a blazing and does some questionable fighting techniques in the process...:
Tumblr media
Yuri, I-- H-How did you do that...? 👏😂
After using his Street Fighter-esque Yor Fu, one of the guys there tries to sneak attack Yuri, but then...
Tumblr media
...CHOLE COMES IN WITH THE ELBOW AND SHUTS THAT SHIT DOWN...!!! 😆
And then she...
Tumblr media
...SLAPS THE SHIT OUT YURI (TWICE...)
Tumblr media
...And gives him some advice...!!
I loved what Chole says to Yuri about how he could die on the job and what that would do to Yor it that ever happened (and that exact thought was most likely what was going through Twilight's head during Mission 83... 🥲) Chole is most definitely a keeper and a real one...!! 👌😤
Lastly, after a long day Yuri is training at his place when Yor comes to visit and brings him some food...!! 🤗 As Yuri scarfs down the food Yor brought, he thinks to himself about what Chole said:
Tumblr media
But before the chapter ends, Yor tells him that Loid is the one that made the food that she brought over, Yuri spits it out and starts thinking of other ways to get rid of Loid!! 🤣
And that was Mission 89, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! 😆 I'm glad that we got another Yuri focused chapter after all this time (Mission 41 being the first Yuri lead chapter) and got to see more of Chole!! 😁 Yuri never fails to make me laugh and this chapter was no exception (heck, even Scarface had me laughing at beginning of this chapter!! 🤣)
As usual, I'm excited for the next chapter and wonder what's gonna happen next...!! 😄 But if I had to pick one thing that I'm looking forward to see in future, it'll have to be seeing my little weird dude finally growing as a person...!! 😊 (And grow to like Loid, eventually...!! 😌)
That's pretty much all I gotta say about this chapter, so until the next Mission... Take care, be safe out there and be kind to one another...!! SEE YA!! 👋😄

ED 2 In-depth analysis (Or me overanalyzing anime’s decision in everything and long post again yes, I just got so much thoughts, sorry for making you read a lot, but anyway I hope you enjoy)
I just want to point out 3 things that I’ve noticed in this ED
1.The turning into the light
In the first part we see montages of Loid, Anya, Yor, Bond, Yuri and Fiona with the light shining on all of them. However, it was only Loid, Anya, Yor, Bond and Yuri who were facing the light. See the difference in these?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fiona seems like she doesn’t care to turn into the light source, she had her back turned into it and her eyes closed. And even though Yuri was facing the light it was only half his face that was lit, he wasn’t completely turning his head to it. Meanwhile it was Bond, Yor, Loid and Anya who turned their heads and faced the light directly, illuminating their whole face (even though we didn’t see Yor it’s evident she glanced straight into the light source)
We all know that light, generally speaking, represents warmth and happiness which the people shown in the montage never get to experience because of the tragedies they face, Loid and Fiona (because of the war and traumatic experiences that led them to being spies) Yor and Yuri (The loss of parents at their young age) Anya and Bond (Because they were experimented on)
However, the Forgers, despite being formed in the foundations of lies, secrets and deception, found that warmth with each other. The light shines full on them because they are the ones who experience that light the most since they became a family. Fiona has her back turned into the light because she wasn’t accepting that what the Forgers have is real while Yuri is still hesitant to accept her sister’s newfound family as her new source of familial warmth.
In addition, I found the symbolism of the light in the allegory of the cave quite similar. The prisoners in that cave are chained, they are unable to move, and so do the characters in this montage. Something’s holding them in seizing the light but the Forgers were the only ones who stepped out of the shadows to follow the light. The light represents self-discovery and enlightenment and each of the Forger family experiences that the more they spend time with each other. Yuri hasn’t had that kind of self-reflection (But in the manga he’s slowly starting to, thankfully) while Fiona seems like she isn’t interested in that.
2.The Sitting and Standing
I therefore conclude that WIT and Cloverworks hates Fiona more than the manga does. They just kept on emphasizing how much of an outsider she is in this family in this ED😂.
I noticed that in this turning around the house scenario, in this one Yor is sitting in the chair while chatting with Yuri. Both are sitting on the chair.
Tumblr media
Then let’s skip first to Franky and Anya, they were also both on the chair while talking to each other.
Tumblr media
Both of these duos are within each other’s eye level while they are talking to each other and both seem to have mutual understanding and are genuinely having fun.
Then let’s go back to Loid talking with Fiona, and notice how, even with that open chair in front of him, he was not sitting with her at the table. He is also standing just like his wife in the background. They weren’t on eye level indicating the standing one as the superior between the two of them.
Tumblr media
Clearly, this emphasizes that Fiona is a mere junior colleague in Loid’s eyes and will never be someone he could have a mutual understanding with. (Anime is really putting Fiona in her place😂)
3.The Colors of the Clothes
This is the one that inspired me to revisit this ED because the decision about the color of the clothes bugs me the first time I saw the ED. Why does Yor wear blue in here?
Tumblr media
I know that we’ve seen Yor wear blue in the anime but we’ve never seen this particular outfit in this color in the series. So why choose to dress her in blue here?
It’s because it’s connected to that chair analysis I recently posted. The one sitting in the designer chair featured in the volume and the one sitting in the same chair in the comedic inside cover have mutual understanding of each other the most. Like in Volume 1, Anya is sitting in Loid’s chair, Volume 2, Yor is in Anya’s chair, and in Volume 3, Loid sits in Yor’s chair. I've explained it in detail here. And they are exactly in the same arrangement in this ED but it’s their clothes that match the color of the eyes of the one who pays attention to them the most.
Anya’s eyes matches Loid’s green sweater
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anya is fond of spies like Loid and she thinks he’s the coolest, Anya often read his thoughts more compared to any other characters in the series.
Yor’s eyes matches Anya’s red dress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yor is the one who often looks after Anya and the one who keeps her safe most of the time
And the last, Loid’s eyes matches Yor’s blue top
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yor caught Loid's attention when they first met and he only has his eyes set on her, not on any other woman because for him she’s the only fitting to be Anya’s mom and of course, his wife and no one could ever replace her in that role.
They were also in the same color scheme when Yor wore something blue in Episode 10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even if the secrets they have kept them hidden in the dark from time to time, they know they  would always have a light to go home to that is just on the other side of the door and I think that’s a wonderful subtle representation of their relationship in this ED.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Addition: I wonder what these two dorks are talking about before heading to bed. They sure do love talking with each other don’t they? Maybe sharing a room could help them lengthen their late night conversations as long as they want right? I don’t know, just a suggestion.
This post longer turned longer than I've intended, I planned to talk about the color of the clothes only. Sorry I have no self control. But do let me know if you think analysis makes sense.

I’m not an idiot, so I know the manga isn’t going to go this direction, but Anya seems so much more interested in Becky than in Damian.
