several dozen categorical "dark academia" books later and none of them have managed to capture the aesthetic of dark academia, comment thematically or critically on the institution of academia, or employ a series of literary techniques to ensnare the reader and reiterate its content... in the way the secret history managed to do thirty years ago

Very important to me that Regulus' note ended with the words "I face death in the hope", but he ultimately died under the effects of the drink of despair.
"facing death" being both literal and symbolical, since Regulus died facing the Inferi, who represent death. They're corpses. Dead bodies. It doesn't get any more allegorical than that. In the cave, Dumbledore also explicitly points out that the Inferi are meant to symbolise death as a concept:
"There is nothing to be feared from a body, Harry, any more than there is anything to be feared from the darkness. Lord Voldemort, who of course secretly fears both, disagrees. But once again he reveals his own lack of wisdom. It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more."
Does that mean that because of the potion, Regulus actually faced death with despair, the opposite of hope? To me, the resolve he showed by telling Kreacher to leave without him before he succumbed to the effects of artificial despair is more important - but still, that's messed up. RAB's note (which he probably wrote before even leaving the house) and the potion's name pretty much echo each other
