Atsuko threw her purse across their tiny living room, the bag landing square on the couch but still managing to spill most of its contents across the cushions. She turned quickly, kicking the shoes of her feet to land haphazardly on the mat next to the front door, but before she could turn around and storm off, Kakashi was coming into view outside. He followed behind her, sighing deeply as he crossed the threshold into their apartment. 

“Atsuko… Really, I don’t understand why you’re so upset.”

Kakashi said, the sound of squeaking hinges filling the mostly silent space. She shook her head, scoffing before beelining for the kitchen. 

“You made me look like an idiot, Kakashi. I don’t understand why you can’t explain something without putting me down or making a joke at my expense.”

She snapped back, pulling the fridge open and diving inside to grab a beer. She needed a drink after that shit show. The can snapped open with a hiss and she drained half the contents in a few, strong, swigs. 

“I wasn’t putting you down, Atsuko. I was just joking around and teasing you a bit. You didn’t seem to mind it a few weeks ago when Hidan and the rest of your friends were doing it.”

Kakashi replied, pulling a sigh from Atsuko this time. She knew that would come up at some point. He’d been in such a sour mood that night, but he’d refused to elaborate at the time. It was so typical of him to hold a grudge and then throw something in her face when it suited him and his argument. 

“That is different. I shouldn’t have to tell you that. Hidan is an asshole. The rest of them aren’t much better. It’s just how they are. But you’re my boyfriend, Kashi. I can handle some light teasing, but what you did was just mean. Making fun of me like that in front of Asuma and Kurenai…”

Atsuko trailed off, shaking her head at the memory. They were just going out on one of their double dates. It would be dinner at whatever restaurant the game Asuma wanted to watch was being broadcast at. Usually a sports bar or a wing joint. Kakashi and Asuma would discuss sports, especially when it was basketball season. Atsuko and Kurenai would make small talk until halftime. Then their boyfriends would join the rest of the table in conversation for fifteen minutes before resuming watching the multiple screens surrounding them. Eventually, the women would excuse themselves to de-compress in the bathroom, sighing and complaining about the high volumes and their boyfriends inattentiveness. They would return just in time to see the end of the game and wrap up the dinner. 

It was a weekly event now that Kakashi and Asuma’s favorite basketball team had made it to some tournament. Atsuko had grown used to the routine, despite her lack of enthusiasm for the event. It usually went well, and she found herself getting invested in a few games herself. But this time, their halftime reprieve had been rife with tension. Kakashi and Asuma had gotten into a some-what heated debate about a political topic that Atsuko was not up to date on. Admittedly, she’d spaced out during the conversation, becoming rather mesmerized by watching a waiter struggle to fit too many wing baskets and drinks onto a single tray.

“Well, what do you think Atsuko?”

Kakashi asked from beside her, gently nudging her with his elbow to draw her attention again. It took her a moment to re-orient, pulling her eyes away from the mousy haired waiter and blinking slowly as she adjusted her focus. When Kakashi’s face came into view, he was fixing her with a rather serious expression, but she wasn’t sure what he was asking her opinion on, so she shook her head, chuckling softly. 

“Sorry. Spaced out for a sec… what do I think of what?”

She questioned, and Kakashi let out a sigh before jamming his thumb in Asuma’s direction.

“We’re talking about the crisis in Amegakure. The civil unrest in the area. What’s your opinion on it?”

Kakashi returned, but Atsuko couldn’t think of a single thing to say. She could recall vaguely hearing about issues with the government on the news a few weeks ago, but nothing concrete. And she certainly didn’t have enough information to cobble together a half-assed response. So, she shrugged. 

“I haven’t really read up on it.”

She answered, believing that it would be satisfactory. She didn’t want to speak on anything she wasn’t informed on. She’d expected Kakashi to nod and turn back to his conversation with Asuma. Or shed some light on the subject for her. Instead, he had the worst response she could imagine. 

He laughed. It was more like a chuckle, deep within his chest as he shook his head. When he turned back to continue his conversation with Asuma, he tilted his head in her direction. 

“If she didn’t see something about it on Twitter, she probably doesn’t know much.”

Atsuko’s skin crawled as the words rang in her ears again. His casual dismissal of her intelligence just because she wasn’t informed on a subject that didn’t directly affect her. He’d mocked her like some clueless bimbo. Laughing in her face and then making that comment to his friend who chuckled as well. It was infuriating and just recalling it had her drowning the second half of her beer. She crushed the can in her hand and turned to cross the kitchen towards the trash can. 

“I wasn’t making fun of you, Atsuko. C’mon. I was just teasing because you spend so much time on your phone. That’s all.”

He reasoned behind her, but despite the fact that he might think she was stupid, Atsuko was not. People misspoke all of the time. Had their ‘jokes’ taken out of context and used against them. “You made me feel like an idiot.”

Atsuko muttered once her back was to him, tossing the crushed can in the trash. Now, she wasn’t just angry. She was hurt. Before she could make sense of that emotion, Kakashi was behind her. His large hands moved to rest on her shoulders, massaging soft circles against her tense muscles as he brought his head down to breathe in her ear. 

“I don’t think you’re an idiot. And I’m sorry you feel that way. Just… I really didn’t mean it like that. Let me make it up to you…”

He said, slowly rubbing her shoulders before sliding his hands down the length of her arms. Then, he was nuzzling against her from behind, pressing his front against her back as he pressed his lips to the side of her neck. Kakashi burrowed through her wild hair just to reach her skin, drawing in a deep inhale of her scent… 

And she wanted nothing more than for him to let her go. He’d given her goosebumps before, but in this moment, his touch just made her skin crawl. She shrugged off his hands, wiggling to escape his grasp and duck around behind him. It was even more insulting that he tried to brush her feelings under the rug by initiating sex. Like salt in an open wound. This time around though, she didn’t have the energy to point that out to him or even continue the argument. Instead, she kept her head dropped forward and exited the kitchen as she spoke. 

“I’m really not in the mood, ‘Kashi… I’m going to shower and then to bed.”

She said, a sick sense of acceptance settling in her gut as Kakashi let out a sigh behind her.

Atsuko was standing in the bathroom, gently detangling some of her hair with her fingers as she prepared for her day, when the phone rang. It was a FaceTime call from Anko, to be exact. She slipped her fingers from her curls to accept the call, taking a moment to prop her phone up on the counter as it connected. When her sister’s face popped up on the screen, Atsuko smiled and resumed her morning preparation, grabbing a can of dry shampoo to hit her roots in a couple places. 

“Good morning, light of my life.”

Anko chirped, clearly teasing as she laid in bed with the phone hovering above. Her purple hair was smashed against the pillow behind her head like a wild, spiky, halo and her brown eyes shone with something mischievous. Atsuko let out a snort, quirking a brow as she settled the can back on the counter. 

“Light of your life? What the hell has got you in such a good mood?”

Atsuko returned, chuckling to herself as she reached for a bottle of moisturizer. 

“Just the best dick of my life.”

Anko sighed wistfully, the sound of rustling sheets drawing Atsuko’s attention back to the screen as Anko rolled over in bed. When she was settled again, Atsuko could see her toes peaking into the frame behind her head, literally swinging her feet in the air behind her like some smitten teenager. She laughed again, shaking her head whilst applying the moisturizer to her face. 

“Oh god… planning the wedding already?”

Atsuko quipped, drawing a snort from her sister, immediately followed by a sweet hum. Like she was actually considering the idea. Then, she scoffed and shook her head. 

“That’s a sweet idea. But he’s a business major.”

Anko said, causing Atsuko to hiss through her teeth. 

“Yeah… so, no wedding. But I will be saving him to my contacts as ‘Big Dick John’. That’s close enough, right?”

Anko proposed, and Atsuko shrugged a bit despite her chuckling at Anko’s antics. 

“I suppose. Though, these days, I don’t think sex is as important as it used to be.”

She answered, swapping her moisturizer for a jar of under eye cream. Then, just as she was about to screw the cap off, there was gentle knock on the bathroom door. Anko made a sound, like she was about to speak but cut herself short. 

“Come in.”

Atsuko called, the bathroom door pushing open not a half second later. Kakashi usually wasn’t up this early, considering he worked at night, but this morning he had to run an errand that would take him out of town for a few hours. She smiled at him through the mirror when he stepped into the bathroom, his silver hair styled nicely as his dark eyes made contact with her through the reflective surface. 

“Hey… I’m getting ready to head out. Do you need me to- Oh, hi Anko.”

He started to say, noticing the phone on the counter. Her sister lilted “Hi, Kakashi~” before the sound of shuffling sheets poured from the speaker again as she got up to get ready for her day. 

“Uh. Do you need me to pick up anything while I’m out?”

Kakashi finished, turning his attention back to Atsuko once more. She shook her head, a little bitterness still burning the back of her throat at the previous nights events. However, things always felt easier in the morning. In the quiet of their apartment when it was just the two of them. She couldn’t help but smile gently at his soft voice, careful not to disturb the peace. His deep, dark, eyes that held a hint of concern and cautiousness. She’d gone to bed last night with her back turned to him. Not even bothering to utter a ‘goodnight’ before shutting off the light on her bed-side table. No wonder he seemed so… worried.

“No… I’m alright. Thank you though.” 

She answered, matching his quiet tone as he nodded behind her. Kakashi turned his eyes down to the space between them, brow furrowing a bit like there was something he wanted to say, but wasn’t sure how to go about it. Eventually though, Atsuko had had enough of his pitiful expression and she turned around to face him properly. He picked up his head slightly as Atsuko reached forward to pick a piece of lint off the black shirt he was wearing. Then a stray hair. Another bit of dust. He allowed her to preen him for a moment before reaching out himself to tip a finger under her chin. Atsuko tilted her head back to meet his gaze, only to find that he was smiling down at her lovingly. A hint of regret in his eyes. 

“You know that I love you, right?”

He asked, and this time she knew he was speaking quietly as not to allow Anko to overhear this tender moment. Atsuko’s heart nearly shattered at the question, her face matching his pitiful expression from earlier. He could be condescending and possessive and a bit of an asshole at times… but she never thought that he didn’t love her. And she never doubted her love for him. 

“I know… I love you too… and I’m sorry about last night. I overreacted.”

Atsuko said, caving immediately under the weight of his gaze. Kakashi let out a sigh through his nose, nodding slowly. 

“I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. I didn’t mean to.”

He replied, and Atsuko nodded as well, picking yet another piece of lint from his shirt near his shoulder. This time, he grabbed her wrist, bringing her hand to cup his jaw gently as his eyes drifted shut in relief.

“I know you didn't… it’s okay.”

Atsuko whispered back, and before she could say much else, Kakashi was closing the distance between them. He pressed a gentle kiss to her lips, one of his massive hands gripping her waist to hold her steady. This time, she didn’t wiggle away from him. Instead, she returned the kiss and felt life bloom in her chest. Such a silly argument… and it had been all her fault for blowing it out or proportion. When he pulled away, he dipped down again just to press a kiss to her forehead. 

“And I think you’re brilliant. So don’t-… oh god, what is on your forehead?”

Kakashi cut his sentence short once he’d had the displeasure of tasting the fresh moisturizer. He smacked the tip of his tongue against his lips, trying to spit the taste out like a rogue hair, and Atsuko giggled. 

“Sorry. Moisturizer… Here.”

She chuckled, reaching behind her to grab the damp washcloth that she’d used to wash her face with earlier. Kakashi puckered his lips as she reaching up and wiped them clean, arid giggles escaping her the entire time. When he swiped his tongue over his lips and could no longer taste the chemically formula, he too let out a disbelieving chuckle.

“I have to go, or I’m going to be late. I love you and I’ll see you tonight.”

He finished, pulling another smile from Atsuko as she popped up on her tip toes to kiss his high cheek bone. 

“Love you too… See you tonight.”

She said, waiting for him to exit the bathroom before turning back towards the mirror and her phone. Anko was staring at her through the screen, a giddy grin on her face as she waited for Atsuko to see her.

“Aren’t you two just the sweetest?”

Anko cooed, pulling the camera away from her face to settle her phone on her own bathroom counter, laughing almost mockingly. Atsuko rolled her eyes, resuming her routine by grabbing the container of under-eye cream. 

“Oh, shut up. You’re just jealous.”

Atsuko quipped, patting the cream under her eyes while Anko scoffed. 

“Yeah, right. Don’t get me wrong. Kakashi is fine as hell and kudos to you for locking him down… But I’ll take good dick once in a blue moon over stale, domestic, living any day.”

Anko replied, the levity in her voice preventing Atsuko from growing genuinely angry. Though, her sister had stumbled upon a reoccurring subject she wasn’t even aware of and it made Atsuko slightly defensive. 

“Who said it was stale?”

Atsuko said, changing her eye cream out for white brow pencil, leaning across the sink to fill in some of the lighter parts of her brows. 

“Weren’t you the one who just said ‘I don’t think sex is important anymore’? What’s the story behind that then, if your relationship with Kakashi isn’t stale?”

Anko retorted, trapping Atsuko between a rock and a hard place. Her hand stilled its motions for a moment as a silence fell in the bathroom. After Hidan had said what he said at the bar a few weeks ago, Atsuko had been pouring over this topic in her head. She and Kakashi hadn’t had sex in literal months. In fact, the last time they’d slept together had been Valentine’s day. A day they were damn near legally obligated to. Since then, nothing. She’d paid attention in recent weeks to see if she could determine the issue, but she couldn’t pinpoint it. Occasionally, Kakashi would make a comment and try to initiate something, but Atsuko wouldn’t be in the mood. Or vice versa. Atsuko would feel the desire, but Kakashi would turn her down. However, this was not a conversation she could have with Kakashi in earshot. 

She held her breath, listening intently for the sound of car keys jingling in the living room. Shoes against carpet, and then, the front door opening and shutting. Before she could answer Anko’s question, Atsuko ducked her head out of the bathroom, peering down the hallway and listening for any sign of Kakashi. When the apartment only greeted her with silence, she let out a sigh and reeled back into frame. 

“Okay… If I’m being honest? We haven’t had sex since Valentine’s Day.”

Atsuko finally answered, a bit of weariness in her voice as she resumed the task of filling in her eyebrows. Anko gasped from the other side of the phone, drawing Atsuko’s eyes to her sisters shocked expression. 

“Valentine’s Day? Atsuko, that’s like… two full months. How in the hell have you gone so long? Did something happen?”

Anko questioned, the genuine confusion in her tone nearly pulling a laugh from Atsuko. It was slightly absurd for Anko to be so dismayed at this development, but Atsuko could understand why. Between the two of them, Atsuko definitely had the higher sex drive. It was something that had caused her problems in her youth, but a personality trait she never got rid of after starting at the boarding school. In fact… she couldn’t think of a time where she’d gone more than a month without hooking up with someone. Excluding her six month long trip with Jiraiya. And even then, she and Kakashi were having phone sex by month three of that trip.

“I… I don’t know. I don’t think anything has happened? I mean… we argue some now and we didn’t used to. But nothing super serious. It just feels like we’re out of sync? Like he wants to when I don’t and I want to when he doesn’t…”

Atsuko replied, pulling a thoughtful tongue click from her sister. 

“Ah. So it’s just a dry spell then? Still, that sucks. Is he like… bad in bed or something?”

Anko asked, and Atsuko shook her head immediately, pulling the eyebrow pencil away from her face as not to mark herself. 

“Oh, god no. He’s great… super attentive and passionate and… just everything I could ever want.”

Atsuko said, swapping the pencil for a tube of mascara and a small, black, eyeliner pencil. She pulled the skin around her eye, buffing a small amount of liner on the outer corner of her eye. 

“Then… I mean, not to get too personal, but if he’s like god’s gift to lovers, why aren’t you jumping his bones any chance you get?”

Anko questioned, genuinely curious. It was a rare occasion that Anko asked a question that she didn’t already know the answer to. Or at least thought she knew the answer to. Atsuko stopped for a moment, considering the question. This time, she just peered at her own reflection, trying to muster up some lingering desire for her boyfriend. She thought about his hands. Long, lean, fingers with protruding veins that traveled up the length of his forearms. She thought about his face. The cut of his sharp jaw and the way his mouth hung open when she went down on him. She thought about his voice. How it was deep and gravelly when he first woke up, and then his soft moans and grunts when they made love. 

Yet, none of those memories stirred anything within her. No tingling of desire or warmth in her lower belly. Atsuko frowned, going back to prepping her face for the day ahead. 

“I don’t know. Maybe he just doesn’t excite me much anymore? Spending too much time with someone… maybe those things start to lose their luster.”

Atsuko finally said, struggling to put the pieces together herself. Anko hummed in understanding from the other side of the phone and another silence fell as they both considered what that meant. 

“Well… maybe you should try something different to spice things back up… though I feel like it’s a little early in the relationship to need something to revive your sex life.”

Anko commented, letting her true feelings being known despite the fact that no one had asked. Still, Atsuko appreciated her honesty and nodded in agreement. It was a little early… Typically, conversations of this nature happened when people had been together for a couple years. Still, perhaps all they needed was a jump start. A little boost to get things back on track. Atsuko would file that away for the future, but for now, she didn’t want to talk about her relationship with Kakashi any more. 

“Any way… tell me more about Big Dick John.”

Atsuko goaded, chuckling softly when Anko groaned loudly, a mix of distress and appreciation for her hook up. 

“Oh god. Okay… where should I start…”

Sometimes, Obito was too funny. It was nearly embarrassing the way he could phrase something mundane in just the right way and Atsuko would fall apart. Laughing until little tears sprang in her eyes and he made fun of her for being so tickled. Like yesterday, he’d told her a story about an elderly woman coming into the library and checking out two books. 

He’d seen her pursuing the aisles for a bit, looking at covers and the blurbs on the back of each sleeve with thoughtful care. He swore that she searched for two hours before bringing her selections to the counter to have him check them out. Based on her age and the way she’d spent hours looking for the perfect read, he’d assumed that she would have picked out a couple mystery novels. Maybe even a light romance book. But instead, she’d presented him with a cook book that promised to make her casseroles the talk of the town at her next pot luck. The second book had been the Kama Sutra. 

In hindsight, the story had been mildly entertaining at best. But at the time? Obito’s expressions, gawking, and ad-libs had literally moved Atsuko to tears. She’d double over and wrapped her arms around her waist, whining in between laughs at the pain that bloomed in her stomach from laughing so hard. He was doing the same thing right now, though the topic of conversation was much more nonsensical than the previous one. 

“No, you really don’t understand. I looked it up! I watched a video of a woman who owns a hairless cat, Atsuko. She slathered that poor animal in coconut oil until it shined. And I had this thought like… could you slide the lubed up cat across a tile floor like a slip and slide? How far would they go?”

He rambled, growing increasingly absurd as he noticed Atsuko was close to falling apart. She couldn’t stop laughing at the mental image, her head resting against the brick wall as she gasped her laughter up towards the sky. Obito chuckled beside her, amused by his own jokes, but more amused by Atsuko’s reaction. Even if she was laughing so hard her head was starting to hurt, she could feel his eyes on her face. Could see the indescribable joy on his face out of the corner of her eye. Still, she gasped for air and reached out to grab his upper arm in a death grip. 

“Obito, stop! I’m gonna cry.”

She pleaded, unable to stop laughing even for a moment. She squeezed her eyes shut to dispel the tears gathering in her lash line, and when she peeled them open again, she noticed that he was staring at her. The goofiest grin she’d ever seen was plastered on his face, jaw hanging open slightly and white teeth in full view as he chuckled from deep within his chest. Atsuko took a few gasping breaths, still giggling in between as she tried to calm herself down. 

“You’re so funny.”

Obito said, chuckling through his words. Atsuko continued to laugh, but she couldn’t seem to tear her eyes away from him. The mischievous sparkle in his dark eyes as he watched her fall apart at the hands of his words. Eventually, she had to turn away to bury her face in her knees, knowing that she would never gain control of her giggles if she kept making eye contact with him. Atsuko struggled to stifle the laughter, managing to contain herself after a few deep breaths, but the grin was ever present on her face when she finally emerged from her denim panic room. When she rose back up, she dabbed the wet streaks from under her eyes, letting out a sigh of relief as the muscles in her stomach finally relaxed again. 

“You’re an idiot.”

Atsuko sighed, giggling a few more times at the mental image he’d painted. Then, she was resting her head against the brick wall of the shop, lolling it to the side to meet his line of sight again. This time, however, the glint in his eyes had disappeared. Obito’s eyelids hung heavy over dark pools, he wore a smile so soft and dopey that it almost - almost - made her stomach flip. It ceased the remaining chuckles and she felt the smile leave her face in favor of mild shock. Then he was reaching out. 

“Here, let me…”

Obito said under his breath, bringing his hand up to her face. She thought maybe she had missed a tear on her cheek, but instead he brought his fingers to the underside of her nose. He pinched the small ball on the end of her septum piercing, twisting and tugging gently until it was back in place. She must have jarred it during her fit of laughter. Just barely, she could feel the ghostly touch of his warm fingertips against the skin of her upper lip. Atsuko watched, holding her breath, as Obito’s face twisted in concentration, his tongue pinched between his lips while the slowly setting sun shone behind him. When he pulled away, Atsuko was still stunned into silence, unable to stop gawking at him. That was until he laughed, snapping his fingers in front of her face to snap her out of the trance. 

“Hello? Earth to Atsuko. Did I lose ya?”

He asked, still chuckling as if what he’d just done wasn’t one of the most intimate things she’d ever experienced. Atsuko could only recall the number of times he’d done it before. After a make-out session got a little too heated. Or when she woke up the morning after a party, hungover and disoriented in his bed. In a less family friend memory, she recalled him straightening the piercing once after she’d gone down on him in his car. Eventually though, she just shook her head to dispel the thoughts, chuckling awkwardly at her own stupor. 

“No, sorry. I think the weed’s just really strong.”

She covered, listening for his hum of agreement when she turned away to look across the alley behind the shop. Her bottom lip found its way between her teeth, trying to deny the way her heart sped. It was so surreal how someone she’d once known so intimately felt like a stranger now. Well, maybe not a stranger, but she felt like there were things she couldn’t say to him now. Sides of herself she couldn’t show him. It was like there was this invisible wall between them, and she was trying her hardest to scale it or bring it down… but it wouldn’t budge. Even when they did much of what they’d done before their fallout. Joking, teasing, and laughing. Talking about their days. Spending time together. So, why did it all feel so different? Why did that simple gesture make her feel sick? She hadn’t forgiven him, but she wasn’t still angry at him… was she? Atsuko recalled what her therapist had said about holding emotions in. Denying reality until she couldn’t any more. So, she decided to speak up. Drawing in a deep breath, she turned to face Obito again.

“Hey, can I-?”

Atsuko started to say, Obito’s eyebrow quirking up in question. However, before she could get any further, her phone rang and drew her attention. When she pulled the offending object from her pants pocket, Kakashi’s profile picture greeted her. Atsuko let out a sigh, muttering a quick ‘one sec’ to Obito before standing up to answer the call. She walked a few feet away before answering, bringing the phone up to her ear. 

“Hey… what’s up?”

She asked, one hand sliding in the pocket of her jeans as she shifted back and forth on her feet. The audio was a little distant, so she knew he was calling her while he was driving, using the bluetooth in his car. 

“Hey. That meeting with dad’s estate guy didn’t take as long as I thought. I’m heading home now… you wanna let Shisui handle the shop and go out to dinner? Just the two of us.”

Kakashi questioned, a little more pep in his voice than normal. Atsuko glanced over her shoulder at Obito, still seated with his back against the wall as he watched her, waiting. She’d told him that they could order take out and relax at the shop for the evening… He’d been looking forward to winding down after the stress that house and job hunting had brought on. Though, she couldn’t exactly say no to dinner with her boyfriend in favor of having dinner with another man. Her ex-friend with benefits at that. So, Atsuko turned away from Obito and nodded, despite the fact that Kakashi could not see the action. 

“Yeah. That sounds good…”

Atsuko answered, and Kakashi was quick to reply. 

“I should be home in about an hour… Figured we could go to that place you like. The one you and Jiraiya are always talking about.”

Kakashi suggested, and her eyes did widen a bit at that. It had been a while since they’d gone a proper date, and the restaurant he was referring to wasn’t like the ones they typically frequented. It wasn’t high class, but it was on the expensive side and more intimate. No TVs blaring sports or rowdy groups of teenagers to distract them from one another. 

“Yeah… that sounds nice. Guess I should go get ready then.”

Atsuko said, able to hear the smile in Kakashi’s voice when he replied. 

“Wear something nice… I’ll be there to pick you up in an hour.”

He instructed, and despite the spat they had the night before, Atsuko smiled at the mild excitement in his voice. It made her feel… nice. Special. 

“Okay… I’ll see you then.”

She replied, to which Kakashi was quick to reply. 

“See you then… Love you.”

“…I love you too.”

With that, the call ended and Atsuko slipped her phone back into her pocket. She turned back around to look at Obito, the apologetic smile already on her face as she moved to explain. He groaned, dropping his head back against the wall in preparation for what was to come. 

“I’m sorry, Obito. I know I said we’d hang out tonight, but Kakashi is going to be back home sooner than I thought and he wants to go out… We haven’t exactly had a chance for romance recently and I-“

She started to explain, but Obito was waving his hand to dismiss her, standing with a soft sigh. 

“Don’t worry about it. I get it. We can just hang out some other time.”

He said, trying to come across as casual but she didn’t miss the slight bite in his tone. Probably jilted by the idea of her choosing Kakashi over him again. Though, he wasn’t her boyfriend. Kakashi was. Atsuko nodded, muttering another apology as they both went back inside the shop. Before they could emerge from the hallway and back into the main room, however, Obito stopped in his tracks, spinning on the toe of his dirty converse. 

“Oh. What were you going to ask me before Prince Charming called?”

He asked, the soft sneer in his voice unmistakable. Atsuko opted to ignored it, shaking her head to dismiss him. Even three minutes worth of hindsight was enough to let her know that she was being dramatic and over-analyzing. The distance she felt now with Obito was only natural after what they’d been through. Things would get easier and there was no need to embarrass herself. 

“Ah, it’s nothing. Honestly I can’t even remember what I was going to say.”

Atsuko dismissed him, chuckling a bit at her ‘forgetfulness’. Obito stood still for a moment, narrowing his eyes dramatically to analyze her. Then, when he didn’t see the need to poke holes in her story, he shrugged and turned around to continue walking forward. 

“Alright… I’ll text you later.”

True to his word, Kakashi had arrived home almost exactly an hour after their phone call. Atsuko had been putting the finishing touches on her makeup, bent over the bathroom sink to get close to the mirror as she lined her eyes in black with practiced precision. Kakashi had snuck in behind her, giving her hips a playful squeeze before using the bathroom and going to change his outfit. They were both ready at the same time for once, Atsuko emerging from the bathroom in tandem with Kakashi exiting their bedroom. In a moment she could only describe as a snap shot memory she knew she would revisit for a long time, they simply stood at opposite ends of the hallway and smiled at one another. 

Kakashi was dressed in a white button up and a pair of black dress pants, nice and simple. But the way the sleeves were rolled up neatly drew her attention to his forearms, his veins sticking out against his skin created tantalizing lines all the way down to his long, slender, fingers. The top two buttons of the shirt were left undone on purpose, giving her a peak of pale skin and the peak of his collarbone. His head of silver hair was still sticking up in several directions, but he always made bed head look fashionable. A smile tugged at the corner of Atsuko’s lips as she was met with the harsh reality that her boyfriend was a total babe. 

“You’re beautiful.”

Kakashi said from the other end of the hall, pulling Atsuko’s attention to herself for a moment. She glanced down at her outfit. It wasn’t anything special. A matching set she’d bought online consisting of a plain black maxi skirt and a form fitting cropped top. Though she had put some work into her makeup and hair. Teasing and fluffing the curls on her head until they were voluminous and wild. Her lips were painted a deep red and she’d even gone so far as to glue on false eyelashes for the occasion. 

“Mhm. I have to step my game up if I want to keep some other girl from stealing you away.”

Atsuko teased, Kakashi letting out a chuckle as he walked down the hall towards her. When he was close enough, his hands gripped the sliver of visible skin at her waist, tugging her towards him. 

“You definitely don’t have to worry about that.”

He confirmed, dipping down for a gentle kiss, careful not to press too hard and risk ruining her lipstick. When he pulled away, Atsuko giggled at the red stain on his mouth, reaching up to run her thumb over his lips to wipe the makeup off. 

“Why is it that every time I kiss you, I come out of it with something on my lips?”

Kakashi teased, drawing another chuckle from Atsuko. After gathering a few more things, they were on their way out of their stuffy apartment. Kakashi drove, his hand squeezing Atsuko’s plush thigh for the entire ride. The car ride was mostly silent, save for the soft sounds of the radio, and she had time to consider why Kakashi’s behavior had changed so drastically. It’s not like he’d been outright dismissive of her in recent weeks, but he sure as hell hadn’t been romantic or engaging with her in this way. Maybe he’d just been in a slump, just like she had been. Now, they were going to go on a nice date and rekindle some of what they’d lost. They’d share sweet conversation over dinner and return home, barely able to keep their hands off one another. For the first time in a while, Atsuko felt the tingling of desire in her stomach. 

Once they were seated at their table for the evening (Kakashi had insisted they get a booth near the back of the restaurant, a secluded corner where they could enjoy each others company in peace), they both ordered a glass of wine. Red for Kakashi, white for Atsuko. They settled on their orders and placed them with their waiter, filling the time in between with idle chatter. Kakashi told Atsuko about his meeting regarding some loose ends that he had tie up with his father’s estate. There was a piece of land under his fathers name that had been tied up in legal tape since his death, but they’d finally managed to untangle the mess and place the plot of land on the market. That was part of the reason he wanted to take her out to dinner. He wanted to celebrate the bit of money he was soon to make from selling the property. 

Atsuko didn’t have any exciting news, but he listened intently as she talked about her day. 

“Obito stopped by the shop and we talked for a bit… Did I tell you that he’s moving?”

Atsuko asked, her hands fidgeting endlessly with a paper straw wrapper that had come with the glass of water she’d ordered to balance out the alcohol. Kakashi shook his head, so she continued. 

“Yeah. Said he needs a new start, so he’s moving to Suna in a couple months. He’s looking into apartments and is thinking about getting his certification to be a mechanic.”

Atsuko said, smiling a bit at the prospect. A selfish part of her wanted Obito to stay close by so she could see him as often as she pleased, but a bigger part of her was happy for him because he was making a change in his life. Deciding on a career path and moving out of his grandfathers house. It was exciting. But Kakashi let out a light hearted scoff and it dampened her mood quickly. 

“He wants to be a mechanic?”

Kakashi questioned, though it felt backhanded in his approach. Snotty and arrogant. Atsuko’s eyebrows knitted together in anger, sitting back in her seat as she crossed her arms under her chest. 

“Yes. Is something wrong with that?”

She asked pointedly, causing Kakashi to raise his hands in mild surrender, shaking his head. 

“No, of course not. It’s just… not what I expected from him.”

Kakashi said, and Atsuko really didn’t want to ruin their nice dinner over Obito’s career choice. However, his comment didn’t sit right with her. It was almost like Kakashi thought lesser of Obito for pursuing a more blue collar job. Which was rich coming from the guy who worked part time as a bartender and took a gap year to drive across the country and ‘find himself’. It’s not like his career prospects were overflowing. However, before she could quip back at him for his hypocrisy, the waiter approached with their meals. 

Once the plates had been settled, Atsuko’s empty stomach took precedence over her anger and they began to eat in relative silence, only speaking up to discuss the food. Once they had finished their dinner and placed an order for a dessert to share, Kakashi seemed prepared to talk again. His wine glass had been refilled, and he took a leisurely sip before settling the glass against the table and leaning forward on his elbows. 

“Actually, Atsuko, since you brought up Obito, there is something I want to talk about.”

He started, looking at her rather seriously. Atsuko swallowed the scathing comment still residing in her throat and tilted her head to the side curiously, a cue for him to continue. 

“Well, you’ve been talking to him a lot recently. It’s one thing to be friendly with him when he’s at the shop, but I’ve seen that you guys text and stuff too… I just want to be honest and let you know that it… it does make me uncomfortable.” Kakashi admitted, phrasing his words carefully, as if he’d practiced this beforehand. Atsuko knew. Of course she did. She’d noticed the way Kakashi craned his neck to look at her phone on occasion. Or the way he seemed stand-offish when she talked about Obito, mentioning something he’d said to her or a joke he’d made. Though, she hoped it would be something he would get over. Clearly it was not. 

“So… you want me to stop talking to him?”

Atsuko clarified, unable to hide the bite in her tone this time around. It boggled her mind. The Kakashi she’d begun dating several months ago was not the jealous type. In fact, he’d help her work through her falling out with Obito gracefully and patiently. Never once did he make a scathing comment about the other man in her life. And never did he act as if her affection was some prize to be won, born out of their competition with one another. What had changed?

“I can’t control you and every aspect of your life, Atsuko. You’re an adult. I just wanted to let you know how it makes me feel… I mean, if I kept in constant contact with my Ex and told you stories about her all of the time, how would you feel?”

Kakashi asked, careful not to come across as condescending or rude, but Atsuko couldn’t help the snapping comment she threw his way. 

“Obito is not my Ex. We were never dating.”

She clarified, not missing the way his eyebrow quirked up in question. Still, that argument was not one she wanted to re-hash, so she sighed, turning her eyes down to her lap and trying to consider this rationally. The idea of never speaking to Obito again made her sick. Physically ill to the point that her hands were growing clammy under the table. Her stomach churning. Then again, the thought that something she was doing was negatively impacting Kakashi made her feel something similar. Maybe that’s why he’d been so distant recently… he was worried about her and Obito’s relationship. 

“He’s my friend, Kakashi. Nothing is happening there and nothing will ever happen. I just… before all of that went down, he was my best friend for years. You know that. So there really isn’t anything to worry about.”

Atsuko returned, trying to dodge her way out of making a difficult decision. However, Kakashi shook his head, denying her. 

“I get it. But… I mean, for fuck’s sake, Atsuko, he’s seen you naked. And not in the innocent, friendly, accidental way. I… look, I don’t want to fight. And I don’t want to upset you. I trust you. But I know what men think about you when you walk into a room. I counted four, married, men who nearly fell out of their seats looking at you just while we walked past them on the way to our table. You’re beautiful. And on top of that, you’re smart and funny and just… the whole package. I just don’t trust Obito, is my point. I can’t imagine that he doesn’t still have feelings for you, and if he ever acted on something like that… do you see the position that puts me in?” Kakashi explained, tumbling over his words as he tried to make his point. She couldn’t tell if he was trying to flatter her to soften the blow, or if he was being genuine in his assessment. Though, what she could tell, was that he wasn’t trying to put the blame on her. As much as it hurt her to admit, Atsuko did understand his perspective. If Obito were ever to try something… it would put both of them in a less than ideal situation. Maybe it was for the best if she cut him off or, at least, limited their contact somewhat. Still, the idea made her sick. So, for the time being, she opted to just tell him what he wanted to hear. 

“I can handle myself if… well, I understand what you mean. I don’t ever want to intentionally put you in a bad spot, ‘Kashi. I love you and if it makes you that uncomfortable… then I’ll cut down on talking to him so much.”

Atsuko said, meek and putting on the act of scolded child. Part of dating Kakashi was picking her battles and, in the instances where she was clear minded, Atsuko knew when to fight and when to lay down her weapons. Having an argument in public wouldn’t be a good look, and she’d been having a good time up until now. She could easily defend her position and her friendship with Obito, but for now, it would be best to play into Kakashi’s hand. He had a valid point or two, so it wasn’t as difficult to swallow the bitter pill. Then, she could figure out where to go from here on her own time, when she wasn’t trapped in a restaurant with him. Kakashi reached across the table, taking her hand in his own and squeezing gently to bring her attention back to him. She raised her eyes to meet his dark ones and noticed that he was staring at her with nothing short of care, concern, and a hint of desperation. 

“Thank you, Atsuko. I love you too and I just… can’t stand the idea of losing you.”

Kakashi eked out, and she almost felt bad for placating him instead of saying what she truly felt. Truly, despite her recent concerns, Atsuko did love Kakashi. She was reminded of the night of the party at Deidara’s. The way he’d guided her from the bustling house onto the quieter porch. He’d wrapped his jacket around her shoulders and shielded her from prying eyes as she cried. Then, later, he’d held her as she cried in his arms over another man. She couldn’t think of any greater display of love, because it wasn’t possessive in nature. It was selfless and kind. A sad smile tugged at the corner of her lips and she nodded, squeezing his hand in turn. 

“You won’t lose me. I’m not going anywhere.”

She promised, prompting Kakashi to lean further across the table and press another kiss to her lips. He tasted of dry wine and garlic, but she didn’t mind. In the end, a part of her knew that his mouth would be the one she kissed for the rest of her life. They were stuck with each other.

As you know, Richard is relatively new here, but he comes with some great outside experience, and I am very confident that he will be a great project lead.”

Like he knew that no matter how dissatisfied he might be, he’d never leave him, because he liked the money, and the lifestyle, and Barry’s own job here couldn’t afford it. 

He could barely focus for the rest of the meeting. After an hour, he faked a phone call, and retreated to his cubicle to think. Mostly, he stared at the little business card that Hugh had given him, and thought about what on earth “Broker” might mean. Someone in the drug trade, apparently, if Hugh worked for him. So much of that conversation had been...weirdly cryptic, but Hugh had been right about the central proposition.
