I may not have much going for me but at least one time I made a dude go “I’m a published author, a teacher and a scrabble champion, and your word choice is too much.”

So apparently twitter folks are doing a, “Sell Snyderverse to Netflix” thing and 1. I’m begging people to understand how corporate IP works and 2. I’m begging fans of Superhero movies to watch more films.
I say this as someone who enjoys comics, superheroes, and even some of the films btw. In fact, it’s because I love these characters and worlds so much that I’m just kinda in disbelief there’s so much hype for Snyder’s work. (Not to say I agree with how whats his face is taking DC either, but that’s a different matter)
But right, first, corporate IP.
Zack Snyder was a director who had various ideas for how a DC film verse could work, as DC/Warner Brothers was trying to copy the success Marvel had with the MCU. He does not own the characters within that verse. He can play with them, and people can identify the characters as Snyder’s take on them, but he does not own them, or the movies he made. DC/Warner Brothers does.
Now, could they sell the rights to Snyder’s take on the verse to Netflix? Eh? It’s complicated. Primarily because it requires differentiating Snyder’s version of the characters from what DC owns, and that brings into question if DC owns the takes that other writers have done, and it’s a whole mess and a half.
That said, they could potentially license the characters to Netflix, and Snyder could make films that way. However, given how DC didn’t want to give Neil Gaiman John Constantine for Sandman, a character Gaiman HAS written for btw, because of a seemingly now canned live action show, that seems HIGHLY unlikely.
Also, none of this makes sense for either Netflix or DC/WarnerBrothers/HBO. Netflix is just asking to lose money with all their “reducing password sharing” nonsense, and while they’ve spent a good chunk of money on other IP, the cost to license the fucking Justice League would be astronomical.  And they’re definitely not going to sell the rights to their blockbuster movies to Netflix. Turn them into tax write offs? Sure. Nix them from streaming platforms? Absolutely. But sell the rights to something that would also include toy & other merchandise sales? Never.
And now the second, extremely inflammatory, point.
Please watch more movies.
And this isn’t me being pretentious. I’m not even saying it has to be good movies. I love a good Rifftrax myself, and I regularly watch random scifi schlock I find on Hulu or whatever.
But like, the more you broaden your horizons, the more film you consume, the better you’ll be able to recognize certain tropes, understand certain styles, and may even find there are films you enjoy outside of the mega franchises.
Personally I find Zack Snyder movies to be fairly...mid. They’re flashy, sure, and can have decent moments. But his takes on the DC characters just...don’t even feel like the characters to me, which is a failing in itself, and overall, his use of lighting, CGI, and pacing are meh.
His films are popcorn films, and that’s fine. But by watching a wide variety of films, both popcorn & deeply innovating, it’s easier to understand where the flaws are. It’s also easier to appreciate films by other, smaller, studios and directors who don’t have the budgets he does.
Because y’know what? This megamonopoly corporate monster that has consumed the film industry is stifling creativity. It favors bland, mediocre, by the book films, while directors of marginalized genders, races, and/or sexualities are left by the wayside unless they manage to come into some once in a lifetime opportunity. So many stories are being ignored as corporations believe they won’t make a profit.
So maybe instead of demanding Snyder get a fifth chance to make more DC films, demand more funding be given to indie film studios. Demand to hear more from marginalized people. Demand these streaming platforms stop removing items in a bid to avoid paying residuals, and demand there be better protections for those working on their content.
And yes. Watch more films.

Boredom Buster Question: what not mainstream comics hero do you think would be suited to integrating into the big two? Like, do you think Night Rider (they count but Hassle doesn’t) would work as an entity in DC comics? Or what about Tru from Tru Calling, do you think she’d work as a vigilante in marvel? Or any other of that type, the scifi/action/adventure shows. Aside from the obvious, like Mutant X or Heroes being integrated into the X Men. (Tho maybe Heroes wok better as Inhumans?)
Ooooh too many! I could definitely see Firebreather in the Marvel U, esp considering he started out as a Young Avengers pitch that Marvel passed on and then ended up at Image. And he’d be a good fit tonally.
Aspen, from Fathom, and literally all that world-building, could easily be transplanted right into the Marvel U and emerge as like, a rival underwater species/nation Namor is unfamiliar with until they come up from the depths similar to the way the Black did in the Fathom comic. Like, the writing for that series and a lot else of it was Not Good, but I loved the worldbuilding and ideas, and I do think they’d fit Marvel well.
Similarly, this is kinda cheating since due to being a Wildstorm character he’s technically DC, even though I haven’t seen him anywhere there since that World’s End crossover event, but Backlash was long one of my favorite Wildstorm characters and I always thought he would fit Marvel better than DC. Leave out his Kherubim heritage as unnecessary and he could easily be a Weapon X project.
Dynamo 5 from Image and their entire concept could easily make for a good family of DC heroes.
So could the whole Noble family to be honest.
A number of Rising Stars characters could fit well in either Marvel or DC - I’d go with Pyre, Chandra, and Ravenshadow for sure.....I’m thinking Marvel. Maybe throw in Matthew Bright as well, and Sanctuary.
The Wicked + The Divine’s ending pissed me off, so the characters who deserved better from that should end up in the Marvel Universe instead, specifically Baal, Nergal and Sekhmet. But also Inanna too for no other reason than I love him.
As far as TV shows go:
LOL well you know me and my long-standing Scott McCall as DC hero Lone Wolf, teenage protégé of Mari McCabe, Danny as Poison Ivy’s, with Kira in there somewhere as Foxfire.
Max from Dark Angel and her siblings could be a book about escaped teens from a rival government facility/project of Weapon X’s.
Magnus Bane from Shadowhunters casts a “Save Me From This Hell” spell, fueled by the mystical essence of Deserving Better, and winds up in the Marvel universe, ousts Dr. Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme, and regularly has spell duels with Ilyana not because she wants his job, but because they both find their sparring matches wildly entertaining. Except they don’t consider them sparring matches because if there’s not even a chance of either of them winding up even a LITTLE dead, its like what’s even the point, y’know? They’re not novices.
Tbh, I’ve never really been all that keen on Adam Strange, but his concept isn’t that far off from Farscape’s, so replace him and his book from any point in the DC universe with Crichton and the crew of Moya, and I’m good.
You could easily drop the entire town of Haven and that entire premise right smack in Maine in the DC universe, and voila.
Shawn Farrell from The 4400 I could see in the DC universe, not sure why I feel he’d be a better fit there than Marvel, I just do.
Marvel has too many vampires and not enough werewolves. That needs fixing, so drop Wolf Lake and all its inhabitants somewhere on the West Coast.
Zeke Stone from Brimstone could fit into DC as a bounty hunter working for Neron.
Ben Hawkins and Brother Justin Crowe from Carnivale could be figures from the history of the DC Earth, their battle between light and dark having happened in the 1930s Depression era there.
The W.I.T.C.H. girls could be a team in the Marvel Universe, with all their villains like Prince Phobos, Cedric and Nerissa there as well, but could also just as easily battle established Marvel villains like Diablo.
Ben 10 could easily be a DC character.
And then because I will never ever be over the bankruptcy of Crossgen and the cancellation of all of their titles and so many lost and wasted characters and because I will always be pissed at Marvel for doing nothing with any of those characters despite having ALL OF THEM thanks to Disney purchasing the whole damn company just to get the one book, Abadazad, which they never did anything with either.....I would put every last one of my faves from that company in the DC universe and they would be sooooo gooooood there.
Giselle Villard and all the Guild Spirits from Mystic would be BFFs with Zatanna, and keep her enemies Animora and Darrow.
Samandahl Rey, Roiya Sintor and Zaniati Oribatta from Sigil would be off on Sam’s ship The Bitterluck, involved in some interplanetary war somewhere in DC space like with the Thanagarians.
Sephie from Meridian would be....I have no idea actually, because Earth just doesn’t work for her, not without her sky pirates, so put all of them on some random planet in DC space inexplicably populated with ‘might as well be Earth humans.’
Simon Archard and Emma Bishop from Ruse would be based out of London, occasionally being consulted by various other DC heroes like Batman, who Emma would piss off just by existing, and Constantine, who would piss off Simon just by existing.
Have Capricia, Tug, Verityn, Zephyre and the twins Gammid and Galvan from Crux be ancient Atlanteans here as well, who end up discovered in stasis by Arthur and have to adjust to the present day, as well as face threats from their past/present day like Aristophanes who end up a danger to modern day Atlantis.
Cassie from Route 666 would be criss-crossing the US doing Supernatural better than the Winchesters could ever.
Solusandra and Lindy from Solus are running around the universe scaring the shit out of the New Gods just by virtue of them having no idea who or what Solusandra is or what she’s really capable of.
The First could all be various New Gods: Pyrem, Trenin, Yala, Persha, etc would be from New Genesis, while Ingra, Braag, Tulity, Gannish and Seahn would be from Apokolips.
And lastly, Charon from Negation would be the mysterious threat from the Anti-matter universe who kidnaps various DC heroes to test them and the potential threat his armies face in the DC universe....among them, the various Negation characters like Obregon Kaine, Evinlea, Javi, Iress, Corrin, Matua, Mercer Drake, Westin and Shassa.

New Groundbreaking Communication Technology
There is a problem with digital communications. There are so many hacks and deep fakes and fake-news-tubers you don’t even know if a news network is the real thing. Or the reporter is actually that person. Seriously you do not know who or what you are talking to or who or what is talking to you.
You think there are no more advances to make in communication to protect your privacy? It is blazingly apparent that digital has problems. People spend a lot more time, money and stress on digital communication than before the web. Ask somebody who was around before the web.
The arts are taking a big hit big time. Including in recorded and digital arts. I’ve researched technology gearing up for this for four years. Expressing yourself is now banned by the internet. Some news outlets are now talking about it, but I still have to be careful how I word this… and not register this page for keyword search.
33 Reasons this new way is better than what you are using to read this…
A creative way to communicate.
Noninvasive and safe for anybody.
Improves brain function and thought clarity.
Best form of private communication protection.
A great way of identifying that it is from you.
A great way of identifying it is from who you know.
They impress employers and business associates.
They impress friends and lovers.
A treat for anybody who receives one.
People collect them and they feature in books.
People win prizes for their skill in creating them.
Some are in museums and major library archives.
No batteries, device, memory chip or wifi required.
You can do it on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere.
You can do it on a spaceship to the Moon or Mars.
When you get one you enjoy opening it and reading it.
Don’t have to worry about losing it if your computer breaks.
Hackers and scammers cannot digitally steal the info.
It is safe enough to put your credit card info on it.
It can be registered for tracking for extra protection.
People who are not experts in technology can receive them.
People who are not experts in technology can make them.
The practice improves mental health and coordination.
Faster to work out ideas and draft up plans.
You can do it with one hand tied behind your back.
The tools to make them cost a lot less than a tech device.
Artificial intelligence can’t create foolproof hacks for it.
It is vintage and revolutionary at the same time.
You can have a say on whatever you want.
You can’t get tagged and banned from social media for it.
The tools to make them are great as a gift.
They are considered a fine art.
No fear of no likes.
The illustrations show you what it is and instructions how to do it … :) Train yourself and others to get off the screen. Be selective and minimal when you are on the screen. Lectures and lessons are OK. Surfing and digital social and communications not OK. I am guilty too, but working on it.
I like to get my info from real experts face to face whenever possible. So I know where and who the info is coming from. Any kid from anywhere with wifi can create a deep fake and tell you bullshit. That is not an exaggeration.
Deeper down the rabbit hole…
Ask somebody face to face, who actually works in a real hospital, how many virus deaths they’ve had. The real numbers are less than normal flu. My neighbor and friend of many years is neonatal ICU nurse with a masters in science. Safe vaccines cannot be made within a year. They need at least 3 years testing. Something artificial created this on the media and in computer messages and digital stats. A software virus is crashing your world, not a biological virus. There was no cheering in the streets of San Francisco inauguration day. San Franciscans would normally ignore lockdown to party about it. The little bit of a light show from Twin Peaks, didn’t make the news.
You have the power to get back to normal and give everybody their jobs back, and more, by following the above instructions. Share this and get your friends to share it and keep sharing it, so it doesn’t get erased. Print it out and send snail mail it. Stop letting the machines take over. AI doesn’t work for the real world. Quite the opposite. Ask any SciFi freak. They’ve been writing books and movies and animations and games and comic books about something like this happening for over a century. Even the Bible talked about it and that was written in 350 AD by Constantine’s scribes. My partner keeps saying “It’s Biblical.”
Here’s another strange couple of medical facts. Told to me by a medical doctor in Australia before the web and a doctor in San Francisco after the web. Number one is tobacco is not harmful, it’s the modern chemicals they started treating it will that are harmful. Tobacco is a medicine that helps with thought clarity, destress and immune systems. The shrub used for thousands of years by tribes in the Americas. A tobacco tree species grows Australia, used by Australian Aboriginals for 80,000 years.
Number two is you can’t patent a natural medicine. Natural medicines and techniques work fine for most things, but you can’t patent those. Nor can’ you sell a bunch of disposable implements to administer it. Nor promote a virus to make you think you need it. A company and its shareholders cannot patent natural lifestyle to corner the market. They cannot make money from you making stuff yourself and living naturally and independently or offline. Shareholders make the money and want more money, shareholders program the companies what to do. Big companies are just big computers with humans for circuit boards, just like a SciFi movie. It is a company’s job to dumb you down to buy their stuff. It is how they make more and more money for their shareholders.
You cannot say that what is going on today with online culture and real world impact is a good thing. We’ve hit a brick wall that gets nastier every day. It’s time to turn left.
Learn how to go analog. You will enjoy it more than digital and save a lot of time, stress and money. You can relax while you do your stuff. Support organic mom and pop shops and tobacco. A little bit goes a long way.
Wouldn’t you concerned about this?

A BDay Request + 43 Things
I’ve been wanting to do this anyway, but today’s my birthday – first one since I started this blog last fall – and I wanted to ask everyone to tell me what your Garashir story is and give me a link. (Or just the name if you cannot find the link.) Leave it in the comments or message me. Later I’ll post all the links. And read them, if I haven’t already.
Meanwhile, here are 43 things about me, one for every year of my life. Some I’ve definitely mentioned, others not.
The earliest “crushes” I can remember in my life are Spock and the Tin Man (Wizard of Oz). Notably, both wore blue eyeshadow, which made me feel all fuzzy inside.
I grew up in northeast Massachusetts (New England) but have somehow lived in Georgia for the past 20 years (19 of those in Atlanta).
I’m 6 ft. tall and got to that height at age 12. (I was 5 ft. in 2nd grade already.)
Was severely bullied as a child (definitely just for being tall), going on through high school and while it was pretty horrible, had lasting effects, it’s had some positive too, like I am extremely empathetic and I never say nasty stuff to anyone ever.
Favorite movie: The Wizard of Oz (1939). Other favorites: The Third Man, Lawrence of Arabia, Wings of Desire, Young Frankenstein, Metropolis, Lord of the Rings, My Life as a Dog.
One of my dearest friends is British fantasy-scifi author Storm Constantine. (Rather a cult author, so not hugely well known, but if you’re into dark fic or are a goth or into weird fic or queer sci, you might know her.) I am actually her fiction editor (on her Wraeththu universe books) and we are currently working on our fifth short story anthology together. I’ve also visited her at her home in Stafford, England, I think six times now. I love her :)
I’m really big on international travel or, I should say, travel to Europe. As a teenager I spent a summer in Germany and after college I got hooked, to the point I’ve been over 20 times at least. Been to the England, Scotland, Germany and Italy multiple times – Germany by far the most often – and also Slovenia, Austria, Czechia, Netherlands, Belgium. My most recent trip was Berlin. For my most immediate travel plans (next year) I have in mind: Sicily, Bucharest (have a friend there), Scandinavia, Dublin, Budapest (friends there too).
Pretty much fluent in German, although not to the point I could write any decent fanfic :)
My eyes are true hazel.
I live in condo in a 104-year-old neo-Gothic skyscraper. It’s beautiful.
I’m actually terrified of the idea of going to or being in outer space.
I’m more intrigued by the mysteries of the ocean than space.
My B.A. was in journalism but I never used that degree professionally as an actual journalist. Instead I went into web development. But eventually with my current job (starting 10 years ago) I came back around to using my verbal & comm. skills like gangbusters.
For my work I spend a huge amount of my time promoting academic medical research.
I -love- black licorice. I, um, even have a Tumblr about it.
Back in college (UMass Amherst) I spent 2 years living in an all GLBTQ dorm. Yes, for real. THAT was an experience.
I’m a gray asexual. The part of me that is into people is bisexual.
Consider myself trans and/or gender nonconforming, bc in many ways I do not identify with the gender I was assigned at birth. For several years I had it in my head I was meant to be a man (outwardly, possibly with hormones or other physical changes) but gradually had a realization that this was utterly unnecessary.
I consider pretty much ALL clothes (my clothes) to be “drag.”
I don’t know how to do regular makeup Everything I do ends up being either like glam rock or drag queen style. Over the top is my style
On multiple occasions, my friends have been asked, out of my presence, if I am a trans woman. (Which I find flattering.)
In college I used to go into Boston completely in trans man type drag and would see how many times I could get sirred. (Answer: always. It was very skinny.) This now sounds unbelievable because…. see 21 above.
Over the past 8 years I’ve gained about 70 lbs. and as result I’ve switched to wearing dresses and “femme” type clothes almost all the time. Don’t have to worry about growing out of them nearly as much and I can get dressed in about 30 seconds. Also my outfits are usually flamboyant, so it’s kind of my own gender expression.
I’m kind of in love with my cats and I don’t care what people think of that.
I’m genetically immune to caffeine.
1/3 pint of beer is enough to get me drunk.
I love beer and my fav types tend to be extremely dark, opaque. Also 9%+ alcohol by volume. This plays interestingly into my susceptibility to alcohol (even regular beer).
My dad died 4 years ago and my mom (my favorite person IN THE WORLD) is 81. Mom is amazing and ever since Dad died we take awesome vacations together. Mom is is a total geek.
I’m the youngest of 5 kids and by FAR the youngest. The age spread is 16 years and my nearest sibling is age is 7 years older.
I hate hot weather. I live in the South. Go figure.
Crazy crazy Instagrammer.
I’ve known my two BFFs nearly 24 (!) years now, since the first month of freshmen year. One of them has been down here in GA with me 20 years, while the other was here for a bit but moves around. Been in Seattle for years and I see her when she comes to Atl for Frolicon and Dragon Con and stays with me.
My favorite “holiday” is Dragon Con.
This year will be the 10th year I march in the Dragon Con Parade in the “walking Periodic Table” as Beryllium.
Favorite post-70s bands/artists: David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Björk, NIN, The Cure, Queen, Beastie Boys, Einstürzende Neubaten, Sinead O’Connor, The Orb, Prince, The Smiths, Morrissey, Kraftwerk, Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees.
I can listen to Philip Glass on infinite loop. (Which is funny)
Obsessed with Art Deco. Like… you have NO IDEA.
Pescatarian. But I have a rule whereby I can eat meat on holidays, on vacation and on my birthday. (Tonight: BBQ ribs.)
I love reading smut. I loathe watching porn. (When I was younger I would watch gay porn but in my mid-20s I just started to find it repulsive, watching anyway.)
As a teen and into college I was kind of a misogynist. Gender issues. But I am OVER IT.
Because I live in the City of Atlanta and in addition don’t drive, rely on public transit, I have spent the past 19 years in situations where I am frequently the only white person on a bus or train. Happens at least once a day. Given that I grew up in a town where there were maybe 2 black families per 35,000 people, this has rewired me.
I am virulently anti-fascist.
I seriously underestimated how hard it would be to get to 43. Like OMG.

TAGGED BY: @vamytas !    thank you for the tag.  .  .   i love talking about characters.
CURRENTLY PLAYING:  too many TOO MANY but let me introduce you the ones i’m more or less active on right now. . .    i’ve got more but most of them are old. starting with wod !
MIO LUCA SCORTESE PUTANESCA                    (  aggressive giovanni ghoul who is a lot more bark than he’s bite.   also owns a dog.   or used to own one.  ) SAMUEL DOUGAN                    (  obvs dougan who’s 2 hip 2 b square or something.  .  .    and pays a lot of attention to his looks.    i mean he should as a proper yuppie.    survives by all means necessary which i guess you gotta if you want to survivve as a sabbat ghoul.  .  .   also has a pierced nipple jfyi  ) STANLEY PIZER alias LARRY HARVEY                 (  my first vtm character i think.  .  .   named himself after multiple real people from history which is so inconspicuous.  .  .     nosferatu ancilla who is strongly disconnected from the nosferatu clan in general and rather sticks to a certain ventrue’s heel .   .   .    hates kent for siring his  EX WIFE  ) NAUGHTY DOG                      (  fallout headhuntress.  .  .    doesn't at all get the attention she deserves,    is extremely trigger-happy and has a really hardcore zero tolerance policy for bullshit going on  )             FOLK J. CARPENTER                     (  CANADIAN COWBOY from around 1850.  .  .    or something like that because i haven’t really decided yet.   surprisingly softspoken and all around a bit of a.  .  .   misfit ?   even though he was intended to be your standard cool cowboy.  .   .    but i just can’t do cool.   ) RAZ                     (  dystopian scifi conman.  .  .   or maybe just conman.  .  .   and scifi idk.   wanted him to be suave and smooth but ended up being the most antisocial character i’ve got lmao.  .  .   he’s so. .  .   hostile.  but i love conmen tbh.  initially star wars based !  ) RAYLAN HEYES                   (  an.  .  .  ARTIST with a punk rock history who started off being his riot girrrl’s groupie after moving from mississippi to new york.    now he’s back and he hates america even more than i do.    if ray was vtm he’d probably be a toreador.    )
WANT TO / WILL BE PLAYING:
LAVELLE DELARGE                  ( i talked about him in dougan’s little drabble about his domitor’s pack.  .  .    i had so much fun writing him i might as well play him. . .    or introduce him as an npc with more in-depth story. . .    i mean look at him that’s art  )
 HAVE PLAYED:
(  CANON  )    the riddler                       (  batman.  .  .     listen... i love eddie.    i luv.   i love riddles too  ) ;   the batman                      (  batman.  .  .   for like, five seconds  ) ;   michael kaufmann                         (  silent hill 1 & silent hill shattered memories.  .   .   harvey keitel fc.  .  . probably the most fun i’ve had with any canon character,    ever.  .  .   dank psychology and some hardocre cynicism.  .  .  he was basically a drug-pusher in the first game and a therapist in the new one.  .  .     i combined both and threw some of the town cult into it because he was  a member in the first.  .   .  ) ;   john constantine                        (  hellblazer & movie.  .  .    mostly movie based tho because i didn’t read much of the comics back then.  .   .     get a load of that keanu  ) ; paul denton                       (  deus ex game.  .   .    mostly bc rollin’s had a jc denton.  .  .   and i love brothers.  .  .  paul died in our playthrough btw we thought he had too bc the game was so old  ) ; richie gecko                      (  from dusk till dawn movie.  .  .    AGAIN bc brothers and this means i used quentin as a fc i can’t believe it  ) ; franky four fingers                      (  snatch movie.    listen.    i know this movie isn’t perfect but i love benicio del toro and the movie was great and he was so handsome and i love gambling characters ok.  .  .    )  (  OC  )  now listen up i love ocs more than anything which means i’ve got a whole menagerie of them.  .  .   but i’ll try to keep it simple omf.  so i’ll only mention the wod characters i remember from here.  .  .   they didn’t survive for very long but they are somewhere in my heart.   new and improved hopefully.  lester cosgrove                      (  tzimisce  anchilla  who sired his sister who literally surpassed him within like a year in everything sabbat and rank related. .  .   who then sired her son to upset her but only got himself a new annoying childe.  .  .   also lowkey still stuck somewhere in 1750 or sth.   .   .  i based him on ‘weird science’ from oingo boingo so u get the idea lmao  ) ;  ???                     (   brujah anti bc his gf was sabbat.  .  .  nowadays i’d prolly go for toreador bc look at that boy.  .  .   all these old characters wow  ) ;  darcy ???                     (   VENTRUE OF COURSE.  .  .   kent’s rival tbh.  .   . he was prince of lancashire and perfectly unfit for diplomacy.  .  .   but he didn’t have to be apt at it.  .  .   he’d just vote to behead you but he was a total embarrassment,    social skill equaling zero.   also hates kent for leading his soon-to-be-wife astray and siring her IN HIS DOMAIN.  he then had her killed but unfortunately kent got away 2 bad.  )
WILL / WOULD PLAY AGAIN: ??? maybe one of my old ocs.   not any canons.  .  .    might re-introduce some older character as npcs for my current / new ones !

The Second Sweep: Hard Theology, Shonen Manga, and Superscience
Criticism (Brian Niemeier) – Nonetheless, I can sympathize with the rocket scientists, engineers, and network admins who groan at authorial violations of physical laws. That’s because I contend that the single most hamhandedly misrepresented and abused science in all of fiction is mine, the queen and mistress of all sciences, theology.
Now, hard SF usually provides a respite from the relentless drumbeat of theological illiteracy pervading the rest of pop culture, if only because hard SF tends to studiously ignore theological questions. The worst you get is a Big Men with Screwdrivers Meet Scooby-Doo story like Star Trek V.
When any other genre deals with theology or a related discipline like ecclesiology, soteriology, pneumatology, etc., it subjects your local theologian to a trial of Christian patience.
Science Fiction (John C. Wright) – The basic limit of Hard SF is the writer cannot violate no known facts of science: Venus is a sulferic hell with a temperature to melt lead, for example, and if the daughter of a monarch of Mars is going to look like a nubile maiden from Europe or India, except with bright red skin, there had bettter be some explanation involving parallel evolution or mutual interplanetary ancestors.
Now, working within these limits is fun, and it is fun to do research and get all the details of travel times and distances to nearby stars correct, or to make sure that what you are saying about higher mathematics or exotic matter properties or Einsteinian frame-dragging effects of rotating black holes is correct according to the latest theory.
But it is also fun to write about a nubile space princess being saved from an evil dinosaur of Venus.
Anime (J. D. Cowan) – We talk a lot about forgotten traditions and warped ones, but how about those still holding the line? You would be surprised just how well following a formula that works could hold tight for so long but as those in Generation Y know, Japan had managed it for an absurdly long time. Nowhere is this more obvious than in their most popular export: the shonen story.
In March a milestone was hit for two of Japan’s most popular magazines. While much was made about Weekly Shonen Jump reaching its 50th year of creating hits in 2018, this year marks the 60th anniversary for both Weekly Shonen Magazine and Weekly Shonen Sunday. It is hard to imagine from our perspective how a tradition could go for so long. These magazines started well after their format had all but went extinct overseas and yet they are still going to this day and running series that continue to get exposure all over the world. If you know Japanese entertainment then you know at least some of them.
Gaming (SEGA) – The Total War franchise pays homage to Predator with the latest Total War: Warhammer II DLC trailer.
Awards (The Emperor’s Notepad) – Commenting on my last post, where I gave a harsh beating to the previous Hugo short story finalist, Alexandru Constantin mentioned that he “can’t get past the stupid titles.” Yes, I have thought about that too, and it’s a common issue with these award-worthy stories or those that give off some kind of literary aspiration: they usually have humongous titles. It’s like they are trying to compensate for something, or perhaps it’s a way to mark the story as one of their own. It reminds me of that amusing observation about the length of a country’s official names correlating with how undemocratic it is (e.g., People’s Democratic Republic of Something or Other.)
Pulp (Hollywood in Toto) – Even if you’ve never read any of Leigh Brackett’s stories, or if the name sounds unfamiliar, you probably know her work.
Try “The Big Sleep” for Bogart fans, “Hatari” and “Rio Bravo” for John Wayne addicts and “The Empire Strikes Back” for everyone else.
Brackett’s career spanned several decades as a screenwriter, but to the science fiction crowd (George Lucas included), she was the Queen of Space Opera.
Brackett began making a name for herself in the pulp magazines of the ’40s. While you might sometimes hear these days that Brackett skated as a woman in a men’s field with her “masculine sounding name,” it was common knowledge among scifi readers that Brackett was a woman.
Criticism (Misha Burnett) – Superscienceis something that is impossible in our world, but which follows definite and consistent rules within the story. Superpowers in comic books, the abilities of vampires and werewolves, magic spells in urban fantasy series like The Dresden Files and The Rivers Of London, warp drives and phasers in Star Trek.
Superscience can be a lot of fun. Writers often construct scenarios where one superscience power is pitted against another one, or a hero must use his ability creatively to solve a problem. These are the kinds of plot elements that make for great late night drunken conversations at cons. Could the Hulk beat a sandworm? What would happen if Rogue from X-Men touched Sylar from Heroes? Could a Dalek become a vampire? (Exsanguinate! Exsanguinate! Exsanguinate!)
And while Superscience is often defined as (small m) magic in the story world, it is really just a variant form of technology in terms of how it works in the plot.
Amazon Woes (John Van Stry) – So, once again Amazon screws up at the end of March, deleting all new releases for a sizeable number of Authors. My last two books are now gone and there’s no way to get them back until Amazon figures out how to restore a backup.

Gaming (Goodman Games): To the casual RPG fan, D&D is steeped in Tolkien lore. The original game (1974) contained direct references to ents, balrogs, orcs, and of course hobbits. Due to the popularity of the game, this eventually resulted in a cease-and-desist letter to TSR. Later editions featured hobbits renamed as halflings (a more generic term, used by Tolkien himself), the balrog renamed balor, and treants replacing the ents. It seems clear that the original ranger character class was based on the character Aragorn as well. For more information and an in-depth discussion on these proceedings, the reader is directed to Jon Peterson’s Playing at the World, which goes into lengthy details of such.
Fantasy (Matthew J. Constantine): The final Prydain book doesn’t feature Taran or his companions.  Instead it’s a collection of six short stories about Prydain that flesh out some of the concepts and history of Lloyd Alexander’s world. “The Foundling” expands on what the tree Witches told Taren about “Little Dallben.”  With “The True Enchanter,” we get a vision of Eilonwy’s mother (I believe…perhaps an ancestor…I’ll admit that I get easily confused by lineages…don’t even get me started on Tolkein).  The story I enjoyed the most was “The Sword,” which dives into some ancient Prydain history. The other stories are various myths and morality tales.
Foundations of Fantasy (DMR Books): While Kipling’s influence doesn’t quite match the sweeping strength of H. Rider Haggard’s, Rudyard had his admirers amongst the First Dynasty of S&S scribes, as well as many more among the authors who followed in their footsteps.  A century ago, in the years just before the publication of Robert E. Howard’s “The Shadow Kingdom”, Rudyard Kipling—even moreso than his friend, H. Rider Haggard—was ubiquitous and read around the globe by both children and adults. He had won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 and his poem, “If”,  was known and loved in all the lands of the Anglosphere. Edgar Rice Burroughs profoundly admired his work and H.P. Lovecraft considered Kipling a “first-rate “ author.
Magazines (Pulp Net): With a new, lower price, but the same number of pages, Bold Venture Press has put out a new issue of Pulp Adventures, #33 for Fall 2019. Under a very nice cover by Harry Rosenbaum (not sure the source), we get a wide range of stories both new and classic pulp. For classic pulp fiction, we get several pieces by a variety of authors. Another crime tale from Charles Boeckman, the late jazz musician/pulp author is “Death Speaks Softly” from New Detective in 1950. A meek bank teller leaves his job for a new life, but gets pulled into crime.
Publishing (Jon Mollison): I’m actually curious about the sudden shift.  For years thee Wendigs and Scalzis of the internet have been enamored of the leftwing control over the big social media spaces.  The rallying cry of “make your own space” has echoed from the right since at least the 2016 election. They know something is up, and they know their current favored son status is at risk, so they are once again following the smarter and faster thinking dissidents.  You can expect them to leap in front of this parade with claims of starting the retreat soon enough.  That’s easy enough to see.  What’s harder is figuring out WHY they are shifting their strategy to follow that of we independent hordes.
Gaming (Scifi Movie Page): Wizards of the Coast and Tuque Games are proud to announce DARK ALLIANCE, a third-person action RPG, will launch worldwide on PC and consoles in Fall 2020. DARK ALLIANCE is an exciting, action-driven, hack-and-slash adventure filled with iconic monsters, legendary characters, and epic loot. In an all-new trailer that debuted during last night’s Game Awards, Jeff Hattem, Founder of Tuque Games introduced millions of players to the game’s unique take on Drizzt Do’Urden and his legendary companions.
Asimov (Public Books): Isaac Asimov loved large numbers. He was born a century ago this month, and when he died, in 1992, he was both the most famous science fiction writer in the world and perhaps the most prolific author in American history. Asimov groped or engaged in other forms of unwanted touching with countless women, often at conventions, but also privately and in the workplace. Within the science fiction community, this is common knowledge, and whenever I bring it up in a room of older fans, the response is usually a series of nods.
Fiction (Dark Worlds Quarterly): To Science Fiction fans, the name Leigh Brackett is heard with the sound of the blaster or the hum of an energy sword in the background. She wrote the first version of The Empire Strikes Back and many classic space opera stories. (For those go here.) But commercially speaking, the Mystery genre was much more rewarding for Leigh. It got her into the movies.
Writing (Pulprev): In the name of realism, many artists today chase the darkness. Every vice is elevated, every taboo broken, every blasphemy committed. Nothing is sacred, everything is false. There are no heroes, only degrees of evil. No saviors, only monsters wearing the masks of men. No virtue, only the will to power. The intelligentsia claim this is ‘dark’, ‘gritty’, ‘realistic’. It is the defining aesthetic of our times, a relentless march towards deeper depths of degradation and desecration.
Fiction (Davy Crockett’s Almanac): This is my first encounter with the REAL Saint. I saw Roger Moore pretending to be him on TV when I was a kid, and over the last couple of years I’ve seen him in Golden Age comics on Comicbookplus.com. But I wasn’t intrigued enough to seek out the real deal until a couple of months ago, when I saw the first of the movies, The Saint in New York (1938), recently on TCM. Louis Hayward – a guy I don’t recall seeing in anything else – portrayed a character I wanted to see more of. He was tough, fearless, devil-may-care, and every bit as suave as James Bond, but with a quirky sense of humor that made Roger Moore seem bland.
Pulp Fiction (Pulp Fiction Reviews): We really appreciate little introductory books like this one written by award winning journalist and editor Jonathan W. Sweet. It offers a very clear-cut explanation of what pulp fiction is and its history in American Literature. Divided into definitive sections, the author introduces new readers to the most famous of the Golden Age pulp writers.
Fiction (DMR Books): Since I had omitted mentioning Leiber in my “Forefathers” post on Haggard for the very reason that I couldn’t find any Haggard-Leiber connection online, I quickly asked what Brian’s source was for this info. He replied that it could be found in Leiber’s “Fafhrd and Me” essay, which, in Murphy’s case, he read in the de Camp-edited Amra anthology, The Spell of Conan.
Amazons (John C. Wright): So I am given to understand that Andrew Klavan, pundit and author, publicly said that women could not pick up a sword and rush off into the thick of combat facing doughty warriors of the masculine persuasion, similarly armed, in a medieval setting, and hope to survive. Apparently, this cause a fury and a twitterstorm and a blithering argument of those who disagree.
Fiction (Wasteland & Sky): Recently I’ve been going back and reading men’s adventure from past decades. I discovered some gems, including the amazing Big Red’s Daughter by the unfortunately forgotten John McPartland, but most of this material is out of print or difficult to find. Not to mention that after the 1980s, the genre just sort of stops. It is as if the entire adventure genre simply got up and walked out the door in the ’90s.

Sensor Sweep: Firefly, Lou Antonelli, Nintendo 1985, Robot Anime
T.V. (Medium.com): Every generation has their white whale of a concluded series. Baby boomers got hooked on Star Trek and made a big noise about it until they got movies, spinoff shows, more movies, more spinoff shows… Generation X kept the love of Star Wars alive until they got novels, video games, comics and, err, prequels. Milennials got Firefly. And three years later, Serenity, a movie that, while excellent, reminded us that the story worked better on TV.  And then nothing.
Author Interview (Liberty Island): It was four months of Hell for the Sad Puppy finalists– from the announcement of the ballot in April until the WorldCon in August – and essentially a left-wing lynch mob. In the end, the whole fiasco can be considered useful because it made the secret manipulators come out of the closet. Larry Correia has been completely vindicated.
Fiction (Paperback Warrior):  “East of Desolation” was Jack Higgins’ (real name: Henry Patterson) 22nd novel, published in 1968 by Berkley and then reprinted dozens of times using different cover art. The book arrived seven years prior to Higgins becoming a mega-bestseller and household name with his 1975 novel “The Eagle Has Landed”. While booming sales never supported the material, the 1960s produced some of Higgins’ finest literary work, evident with this ice-capped adventure starring brush pilot Joe Martin.
Westerns (Mostly Old Books): A taut and violent short western that finds young Jess Remsberg, consumed with avenging the rape and murder of his wife, scouting for an Army wagon train that finds itself outnumbered in a brutal cat-and-mouse battle with a band of merciless Apaches. The tension remains high as the brilliant Apache warlord Chata matches wits step for step with young and ambitious Army Lieutenant McAllister who is close friends with Jess.
Book Review (Pulp Fiction Reviews): New Pulp writer Derrick Ferguson is best known for his action packed adventures, be they the exploits of Dillon, Fortune McCall or Sebastian Red. All of these should already be on your reading list. But back in 1914, Ferguson wrote this truly amazing novella, “The Madness of Frankenstein” that is his homage to the great Hammer horror flicks of the 60s and 70s. Having finally picked up a copy, we were eager open its pages and discover what special grisly treats Mr. Ferguson had whipped up for his unsuspecting readers.
Cinema (Scifi Movie Page): Disney+ has officially arrived, with all the force and weight that Uncle Walt’s 600 lb. entertainment gorilla can muster. The Mouse plays for keeps, and the buzz around event releases like The Mandalorian and the various MCU projects immediately put their streaming service in the top tier alongside Netflix and Amazon.
But Disney’s strengths go beyond their acquisition (and undeniably strong shepherding) of hot IPs such as Marvel and Star Wars. Their library stretches back over 80 years, and a large amount of it is available for streaming.
D&D (Walker’s Retreat): You know you’ve got something worth watching when you get a comment like this: “Yes. Monotheism is the missing link that D&D needs for a medieval authentic feeling in your game. I use it. In addition it does one of two things. It either keeps SJWs away from your game, or it attracts them because they want to break your game or be an antichurch outsider. In those cases they always end up quitting because they don’t get what they want.”
Gaming (RMWC Reviews): The Nintendo Entertainment System represented a sea change in what video game consoles could do and how they were received at home. Released in 1985 in North America, the NES came out at a time when the American market was still reeling from the great industry crash of 1983. Compared to the Atari 2600 which was the previous home console of choice, the NES had better graphics, sound, processing power, and yes, gimmicks. The 1985 launch was actually limited to New York City for the holiday season, and was then expanded in 1986 when it was clear to be a success.
Anime (Wasteland and Sky): As anyone who knows anime knows, there are two kinds of mecha series. First there were the originals, the super robots, then there were those created with Mobile Suit Gundam, the real robots. The former were pulp heroes that went on adventures to stop the villains while the latter were based on soldiers fighting in wars. Different approaches and aims allowed for very different legacies.
Book Review (Matthew Constantine): The second book in The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander, The Black Cauldron is somewhat more complex and more interesting than The Book of Three.  Having already been introduced to many of the characters, we don’t need to go through that again and can instead jump right into the action.  Taran and friends are tasked with finding and destroying the Black Cauldron aka the Crochan, the magic item used to create near invincible Cauldron Born, undead warriors.
Tolkien (BBC): A pub made famous as a meeting place for fantasy authors CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien is to be made into a hotel. The Eagle and Child in St Giles’, Oxford, has a plaque inside commemorating the writers’ get-togethers. Known as The Inklings, they would regularly meet up with other academics at the Grade II listed pub. The application was approved by Oxford City Council’s west area planning committee on Tuesday.
D&D/Cinema (Tenkar’s Tavern): Comicbook.com shared an article about the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie (due Summer of 2021) – Thanks to Luke Gygax for sharing the article on Facebook. The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie will feature at least one character with ties to the Forgotten Realms and will focus on a quest for an iconic magical object. ComicBook.com can exclusively report that the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie currently in development by Paramount will focus on a group of adventurers looking for the Eye of Vecna, a powerful artifact that dates back to the earliest days of the game.
Pulp Hero (Black Gate): I have to confess that writing The Spider is a completely different experience for me than writing the Wild Adventures of Doc Savage, Tarzan, John Carter, or any of the other classic pulp heroes I’ve been privileged to bring back to life in new novels. With these other pulp heroes, it’s largely a matter of concocting a logical plot and having the heroes go through their customary pieces, although I seem to have quickly become an accidental king of crossovers since I’ve managed to convince the various license holders to permit me to have a few of them collide, such as Doc Savage and The Shadow, Tarzan of the Apes and King Kong.
Review (Porpor Books Blog): Men of Violence: All Review Special’ ($5.99, 93 pp) features reviews (limited to 250 words for an individual book and 500 words for a series) of over 100 paperbacks and comics published from 1953 to the present day, that fall (more or less) into the genre of ‘Men’s Adventure’ fiction. Needless to say, we live in an era in which men rarely read for pleasure, the genre of Men’s Adventure is regarded as affront to a Woke society, and any adolescent who brings a copy of Torture Love Cage (Jack Savage, 1959) to school probably will be expelled, and obliged to receive Counseling before being readmitted.
Book Review (Rough Edges): Almost a year ago, I read the first book in the Casca series by Barry Sadler and really enjoyed it. I didn’t mean for so much time to go by before I got back to the series, but that’s the way it happened. I’ve finally read the second book, GOD OF DEATH, which picks up the story of Casca Rufio Longinus, former Roman soldier who was present at the Crucifixion and was cursed with immortality because of it. Wounds or illness that would kill a normal man can’t claim him, and he’s doomed to wander the world, always making his way as a mercenary soldier.
Novel Excerpt (DMR Books): Wulfhere and Eanhere and their army of bears crept down the valley silently. From a cliff they could see Penda’s men as they sat in a little grove eating their midday meal. Eanhere took half the bears and crept round to the other side of the grove while Wulfhere waited on this side with the rest. Wulfhere crept quietly closer till only a small knoll stood between the Mercians and himself, and he could hear their loud talk and laughter. “Ha, we will root this bear out of his den, and he will go the way of his people!” one said as he emptied his horn of mead.
Art (Karavansara): Turns out this is a Robert Maguire cover for a novel called The Deadly Lady of Madagascar, bt Frank G. Slaughter (nice name for someone writing about deadly ladies) that I will try and find somehow. If I can’t write it, I can certainly read it.
Alt. History (Enter Stage Right): Alternative history (popularly called “alternate history”) is sometimes termed “uchronia” or counterfactual history. It is important to remember that alternative history pertains to events that are in the past at the time when the narrative is being written. So, for example, the 1920s projections of Hugo Gernsback about the 1980s cannot be properly termed as being alternative history – even though his vision of the world of the 1980s is much different from what has actually occurred.
D&D (Sacnoth’s Scriptorium): So, I just got a comment on my post back in September on the new film documenting Arnesom’s role in the creation of D&D. Since the comment seems to come from the filmmaker himself, thought I’d feature it here so as to give the filmmakers a better chance to have their say. Here’s their comment.
Gaming Magazines (Silver Key): Later issues of White Dwarf introduced readers to Thrud the Barbarian. The loinclothed barbarian stereotype born in the pages of sword-and-sorcery (Brak, Thongor, Kothar and their ilk) was by then quite pervasive, and strip author Carl Critchlow had fun with a character that was literally all muscle and no brain—a tiny head upon a massive, muscular body. Issue #50 (February 1984) has Thrud invoking “the sacred jockstrap of Robert E. Howard” before hacking his way through a horde of castle defenders, whom he (mistakenly) believes are holding a princess captive in the tower.
Science Fiction (Tellers of Weird Tales): I’m going back farther now into the past, into spring when, in a week when I was sick, I read The Space Trilogy by C.S. Lewis. Things To Come (1936) was still fresh in my mind when I read these books. That freshness may have influenced my thoughts on Out of the Silent Planet (1938), Perelandra (1943), and That Hideous Strength (1945). I shouldn’t spend too much time on this, but I’m sure I will. There is a lot in The Space Trilogy and it’s hard to move past some of these things without commenting on them and applying them to issues current in this blog and in our world of today.
Weird Tales (Dark Worlds Quarterly): Seabury Grandin Quinn would begin his writing career in The Thrill Book, an early Weird Tales precursor devoted to strange and off-trail fiction. Street & Smith, the future publisher of The Phantom and Doc Savage, ran The Thrill Book for sixteen issues, from March 1 to October 15, 1919. The magazine would publish Francis Stevens’ The Heads of Cerberus, one of the first science fiction novels about parallel worlds.
