love me, ever so gently
pairing: austin butler x reader
summary: you recently moved to a new apartment, making new some eccentric friends along the way. but what you didn't expect was falling in love with a stranger. a stranger you somehow couldn't stop thinking about
words: 2.1k
warnings: depictions of domestic abuse, dark themes of relationships
author's note: i made this on an extremely impulsive whim and i have never been so terrified of posting this. my anxiety of trying to make this story went from writing this for three days straight to now suddenly having multiple parts. i'm literally almost done with part III so we'll see how far this goes. hopefully you like my very first fic... i haven't written in years... ehh... and thank you in advance for reading this :3
next part
part I
"you're either incredibly talented or horribly lousy."
george stated right before you tore down the stack of books from the pile. you groaned in frustration, ignoring that thing buried right under the surface of your heart. if bookstores and libraries could make something aesthetically pleasing, then so could you. just like you were able to do a year ago.
you huffed once more before starting the process over again.
george took your silence as a precautionary warning, tentatively placing a small cup of coffee next to you, hoping maybe a little space and some caffeine couldn't hurt your pride more than he did.
"as long as you don't make a mess, it makes my job a thousand times easier," he offered you a toothy, yet slightly lopsided grin before leaving you to your uncomplicated complicated endeavors.
george circled around the remaining tables that were also still being set up for the fair at the community center. you were a regular volunteer for these events, moreso because your neighbors invited you to them in the first place. one of your neighbors being george, who hobbled right back to where you were, smiling proudly at his empty tray.
"well, my services are done."
he flashed another innocent grin before leaving you be, "make sure you get that done before cass sees you!"
"george I'm going to throw this empty tray at you."
he let out a belly laugh, even though he was as thick as a twig. he pulled you over to him, wrapping his arm around your shoulder.
"there she is!"
you rolled your eyes at him, but couldn't help a smile. you still remember when you met him for the first time.
~ ~
your first week at the new apartment building was stressful enough, splitting your belongings in each individualized box and suitcase. and somehow through all that stress, someone as joyous as george just so happened to crash right into you with all of his groceries.
and he had this distinct smell, something between a book you haven't opened in years and an old worn out knitted sweater. at the time, he greeted you like you've been friends for years, something you deeply missed when you moved away from your hometown. from everyone.
"welcome to the neighborhood!!" he screamed in your ear, forgetting his hearing aids before he left for the store. you let out a polite, yet awkward, kind of laugh, thanking him for his very enthusiastic greeting. it's funny to look back on it now, a stranger you would've never imagined becoming friends with. including everyone else you met along the way.
~ ~
evelyn and cassandra peered from the hallway behind you, coming from the kitchen. cassandra with her big box of jewelry for her stand, while evelyn followed suit.
"did george call me cass again? i hate when he calls me cass. it sounds like ass."
"because you are an ass."
cassandra shot him a quick glaring look before he started laughing again, placing her boxes down. she pointed a shaky finger at him.
"you know one of these days, i really hope i end up dying before you. i can't stand that laugh of yours." she grumbled, which made you laugh.
"can't keep a happy man down cass. you're stuck with me forever," he bellowed, leaving a messy kiss on her cheek before she swatted him away. george dramatically saluted them before hobbling away again, wanting to mingle and socialize before the fair officially opens.
cassandra gathered her things once more as she eyed your table with a sense of pride.
"you never cease to amazing me sweetie. i always love how you decorate your books."
her words swelled in your heart and that thing that was buried right under the surface dissipated, only just for a moment. and you were completely and utterly okay with that.
"thanks cassie..." your voice drifting ever so softly. like she was going to catch it in the end like she always does.
~ ~
when you met cassandra last year, you heard her voice before you saw her. you were seated at the lobby of your apartment building, waiting for a blind date that never picked you up. it was about two hours before you decided to call it and when you looked up, you saw her.
she was a bright eyed woman, her grey hair tossed behind a small pink scarf, something you've only seen worn a few times or rather only in movies. she looked at you with a look of concern. you weren't crying of course, why waste tears on some stranger right?
but you got your hopes up immensely high and someone as experienced in her years as she was, she could tell a disappointed look when she saw one.
"oh my dear, what's the matter? are you hurt?"
you shook your head no, having no energy to formally respond with a voice.
"come here love, let's bring you back home. do you live here?"
you nodded.
she waddled her way towards you, keeping you close to her. she was a tiny woman, hunched over slightly as she led you to the elevator. once you were both inside, she asked what floor you were on and pressed the appropriate button for you. her floor being the one below yours.
"sorry we have to stop at mine first..." she began and you shook her head to stop her.
"don't be. it's okay... i was heading up anyway." you finally had strength to talk again, "i should be saying sorry for keeping you from getting home."
she scoffed at your response, displaying one of the warmest smiles you've ever seen.
"sweetie, you're doing me a favor."
the elevator dinged and opened to her floor, the woman turning to walk out.
"i am?" you asked her and she nodded, standing outside the elevator doors.
"yes. because no man deserves to make someone as lovely as you this sad."
your face went from feeling defeated to utter confusion as the woman smiled again. this time knowing exactly what you were going to ask.
"i know disappointment when i see it."
and just like that, the elevator door closed.
~ ~
"how are you feeling otherwise?" cassandra asked you, momentarily glancing over at your beautiful table.
"better. only sometimes," you responded, a lump suddenly appearing in your throat. feeling as if you were half lying somewhere.
"that's okay. just remember that someone who's broken you then doesn't deserve to break you now," she gently held your cheek, looking at you as if for the first time again.
"and besides, who knows who you'll might meet today."
~ ~
cassandra's words rung in your ears, weighing heavy on a hopelessly romantic heart. being alone was easy and you weren't lying if you admitted that to anyone because it was true. that was one of the perks of moving here, along with meeting all of your new friends.
but being lonely... that was difficult. especially when the fall season would blend into the holidays. one night after the other. because everyone seemed to find their someone by the times gifts were supposed to be given. which is why you wanted to put everything into the community fair this year.
and because heartbreak anniversaries were apparently a thing on your calendar.
you glanced over at your table, the last few books lingered for awhile. some people glancing over at them, while others would pick it up just to place it back down again. you didn't really know why seeing a book not being chosen hurt a small part of you. but it did.
or maybe you knew but didn't want to face it.
soon enough, you noticed someone hovering near the entrance, like he was contemplating whether or not to let his curiousity get the best of him. it may have been a little more than an hour or so when he actually approached your table.
you quickly stood up in response, as you noticed him eyeing a few of the older books. his hands lingered on each cover, not saying a word. his hair was blonde, wavy and messy, like he'd just woken up. the rest of him was covered by a black mask.
you did notice the way his hands moved though, hesitating to pick something. shaking a bit, a shadow crossed your peripheral and you could've sworn you saw a bruise somewhere on his knuckles.
"do you need help finding anything?" your voice coming out a lot softer than you had hoped. he looked up and you felt this entire weight lift off of you. like something encapsulating you just shattered into a million pieces and suddenly you could breathe again.
his eyes were so blue, like you were swimming in this endless ocean full of life and somehow you couldn't tell the difference between the stillness of the water or the blueness of the sky.
you could see a slight smiling forming on his face before he shook his head no.
"oh well if you want anything... i really recommend any of the classics."
his eyes glimmered a bit, letting his hand linger on one of the few books he was eyeing before.
"how much is it?" his deep tone caught you by surprise as you hesitated to respond. your own voice catching in your throat.
"oh um... everything is free."
"really?"
and just like that, you noticed something switch in him, a sense of curiosity filling those calm waters.
"which ones have you read so far?"
you didn't realize it, but your eyes lit up at the question. and he noticed. a small smile forming on his face.
"oh this one is my favorite... i haven't finished it, but it was really good from where i left off," you pointed at pride and prejudice.
you smiled at him, like your excitement was taking over and he could tell how much you loved talking about books. his gaze never wavering as you spoke about the stories that overwhelmed you and the others that never lasted a few pages before you decided to stop. he listened with such intent, such intrigue, it made you feel like you were someone he had known for years.
his aura was beautiful and a part of you wished that something would lead to something which would lead to something else. you didn't even feel anything in that regard, not yet anyway, but that same part. it was pulling... gently. ever so gently tugging at your heart.
"thank you for all of your recommendations," he began, holding on to ever single book you spoke about. you were about to protest that he didn't have to, but he was adament on keeping every single one.
"are you sure you want to get all of them?" your voice wavering on worry, but all he did was smile at you, letting out a soft laugh.
"i'm sure."
his voice was so reassuring, you almost forgot to offer him a bag. there was a slight pause before you realized, eyes widened in embarrassment.
you quickly apologized to him, running to the back to get a bag. you left the table feeling this overwhelming warmness flow through you as you noticed your heart beating against your chest. you tried to hide the excitement, but your heart was already getting your hopes too high.
but when you came back, your heart instantly dropped right into your stomach. a woman was now standing next to him, but something was different in his eyes. the oceans were no longer waves crashing against the seashore. they were climbing under thunderstorms. drowning in its own current.
her hair was dark red in color, flowing to accentuate the curves of her body. she was unbelievably gorgeous and your heart sank even more. but there was something about her that you couldn't figure out.
"here's your bag, i didn't mean to—"
"why your table is absolutely gorgeous, isn't it austin?"
he didn't glance at you or her or anyone. all he did was nod. you noticed the grip she had on his arm. it was tight. suffocating.
you offered the bag to them, but she shooed your hand away, like you were merely just a bug.
"no need sweetie, we were just on our way out. he was just looking anyway."
you tried your best to keep your composure, but you were fuming on the inside. only cassandra could call you that and at least when she did, it was endearing. not spiteful.
she flashed you the biggest smile that fueled your fire even more as she pulled austin away. you noticed him stiffen when they left the table. he couldn't even look at you.
and he couldn't even say goodbye.

List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who reblogged something from you! get to know your mutuals and followers ♡
Oooh uh uh that's difficult. Let's see...
1. My OCs and stories
Literally my only motivation to live. I'm very, very attached to my kids—they are the culmination of my blood, sweat, tears and soul. So anything revolving around them makes me very happy, inspired and motivated. I will do everything for them!! Art, writing, even making games if I can! Merch too! Plushies, accessories, anything and everything. All for them. The thousands of little fictional people, worlds and stories living rent-free in my mentally ill brain.
Bonus happiness points when other people also like my kids and are interested in getting to know them better. Like, if you take the time to approach me and ask questions about them, are willing to sit through hours of me rambling your ears off about characters that spawned from the depths of my hellish critter mind, and also actively want to discuss them with me and tell me all of your thoughts—that is like the ultimate quality to my quality time love language right there. It's the most idealistic, unrealistic, impossible thing ever though, mostly because I have a lot of kids and like. 20+ different stories with several more AUs. To have someone else be able to digest all of that information? No way. But yeah.
Fanart and fanfiction of my kids also make me very happy. I will treasure each and every one of the art pieces/writing dearly. Basically anything related to my kids, I will cry over. I will explode over my kiddos.
2. Various media
As of right now, I'm fixated on Twisted Wonderland (LEONA), Bleach (HITSUGAYA AND HITSUKARIN), One Punch Man (METAL BAT AND BATAROU) and Blue Lock (RYUSAE AND KAISER). Very much waiting in anticipation for the TWST anime, Bleach TYBW Cour 3, OPM Season 3 and Blue Lock Season 2 + Nagi movie. I'm also really invested in the Final Fantasy series (III, IV, VII, IX, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, Crystal Chronicles EOT and ROF, etc...)! And I'm a casual player of Punishing Gray Raven (very much looking forward to Wuthering Waves by the same company)!
I also like books! Haven't been able to read as much as I'd like to these days, but I have books I've bought that I hope to read soon. Gotta read Six of Crows (yes, Lune, I'll finish it). Have also been wanting to collect Bleach's light novels (CFYOW currently). And TWST's novels and manga too, once they're translated (Savanaclaw manga and novel C'MERE)! Much to look forward to <3 Fanfics of media I like are also really nice to read. When I have more time, I'd like to write for the fandoms I'm in.
Pretty art is nice. Good games are nice. Good stories and wonderful characters are nice. Beautiful writing is nice. I'm very simple haha, as long as the media strikes my fancy, chances are I'll look into it and derive some form of enjoyment from it <3
3. Writing/Drawing
If it wasn't already evident from the above two points, as well as my own profile, I like to write and draw. Very much an arts kid (creativity is another thing that I'm not sure I have, but let's not get into that). I'm not good at speaking, so having visual representations of the things I feel, be it via written words or artwork, is the best way for me to express myself and communicate, I find. And it's also fun! When I'm not preoccupied with other IRL commitments and stuck in creative ruts, that is.
4. Music
I know nothing about music theory or playing instruments. Not a music kid. I just like listening to good music. In particular, I'm a big fan of J-Pop, J-Rock, Rock, Instrumentals, EDM and Dubstep, Gothic-sounding music, and others, depending on whether they strike my fancy or not. Favourite artists/bands include Tatsuya Kitani, Aimer, Mili and ONE OK ROCK. Banger musicians. You're free to drop recommendations too! I'm pretty open to most genres. Though extremely selective with a few others (K-Pop being one of those genres haha oops).
5. Spending time with friends
Pretty clear cut, I think. I don't have a lot of people I'm particularly close to, but I do cherish those I consider my friends a lot. Quality time love language—just spending time with them makes me happy. We don't even have to really be doing anything. I just like having their company, and if they willingly seek me out and want to spend time with me too, that's even better.
And yep, that's all. I can't think of anything else haha. Thank you for the ask, beloved~

| I'm sorry, June.
ᯓᡣ𐭩 ~ Bibi's au contains some sensitive topics, read at your own risk ⊹ ࣪ ˖
"June and I absolutely love playing piano together ever since we met, we will always have so much fun together every time there's piano lessons.
I'm glad that someone so terrible like me would be the person that June chooses everyday.
"I would find you in a room full of people that I've met" June said to me.
My name's View and I like playing piano, only if it's with June."
Other than playing piano dan just rot on her bed, the girl also had another hobby.
Ranting about everything.
The "rants" that she recorded on her voice tape have never been listened to by anyone. It's just for fun anyway, who would listen to it? Nobody listens to voice tapes these days.
Maybe someday someone will listen to her voice tapes.
"The view is pretty today." June said.
"Focus on the piano keys, not the view." View replied.
View glanced at her and thought about just..
...How pretty she is inside and outside.
June was all she ever wanted. To View, June is better than anyone else in this world. How can anyone hate the sweet, caring and funny June? June's the definition of perfection.
View loves it when she's loving the right person,
and that person is June.
"I'm talking about you, you're my view."
View posting her baby c:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The international piano competition is in 1 week, I'm literally SO nervous!
...nervous for June obviously, hehe
I'm so proud of her!!!"
View doesn't have that much to say about the things that she's really excited about, it's like everything is in her head but she couldn't let it out at all.
"Wanna play together?" I asked.
"Yes, love." June answered while staring at me with those gorgeous eyes.
When will I ever stop getting butterflies from her? She's not even doing anything, she's just glancing at me.
Oh, I just remembered something..
Tomorrow is her day.
The girl politely asked her parents if she could skip school and attend the competition instead,
All she got in return is just insults and screaming from her loved ones.
One thing nobody knows about View's life is that she lived in a strict and abusive household. In everyone's eyes, View has always been the brightest. It doesn't matter how bad the weather is, the view will still be pretty.
But it's too tiring to pretend at this point.
...
..That's too bad, View.
"You'll come, right baby?"
"Yeah!..of course."
Today is the day, where am I?
At school, not the hall.
"If you wanted, you would. View, what I'm saying is that if you don't go right now, you'll lose your everything." View's close friend said.
"Are you..sure?" The girl asked.
"Yes. Go, I'll cover you."
Before secretly leaving the school, she recorded another voice tape. The hall isn't too far from the school, the only thing that is making it dangerous is the highway that separated both of the buildings.
"June, I'm coming."
June's heart is racing. It's not because of the competition, it's because of the absence of View. "You said you would come, but where are you?" She asked herself thousands and thousands of questions.
It's..her turn next.
"I can't..I can't perform anymore. I can't. I just can't."
"Where is my view..?"
"Where do I look..now?"
View was doing so well, she's going through it all. Her heart has always been scared to do something so crazy like this. But for June, she will do anything.
What could go wrong?
June surprisingly did well, even though her head was still thinking of view.
When she was about to finish the piece,
View's life story finished first.
Everyone heard it and gathered outside of the hall.
June asked almost everyone about who got ran by the lorry,
All they could answer was,
"It's a schoolgirl."
It hits her every time she hears the word "schoolgirl" it makes her think about View.
But she was right, it was..
It was her view.
She screamed and screamed,
Dropped as many tears she could,
But her view,
It couldn't be seen anymore.
Then, she heard a voice.
It was her voice.
"June, I know you're waiting for me but just so that you know that I'm coming right now! I'm sorry I couldn't come in time.
..things are just difficult, I'm sorry.
I know this is random but I want you to know how much I appreciate and love you. I'm proud of you, June! Just look at how far you're going, you're even better than me now hehe..
It's okay if you didn't get the results that you wanted after this competition ended, you can always try again. I'm always here to put you back in place.
If you think that no one is here to support you,
Look again, June.
Look who's in front of you right now."
June looked at her lifeless face and said,
"I needed to hear that, Thank you View."

Note
ok ok i've been trying to think of a clever way to word this but it's thursday morning and my brain is usually scrambled eggs by this point of the week.
so basically. dc. batfam. jaykyle. i'm intrigued, and i'm curious about, like, starting points for beginners with terrible attention spans whose knowledge base is the first few seasons of the cw shows and young justice, your epic jaykyle post from whenever i asked about them, a handful of jaykyle fics, and the tags on your dc rbs.
(and OF COURSE i will inhale any other info you choose to share here bc i love a winter ramble <333)
I am SO GLAD you asked :]]]]] there's a great deal of info here but I'll try to keep it as organized as possible. I'll talk about movies/tv shows/other forms of media FIRST, since there's a lot less info to try and cram in. THEN I'll do comics because there's a lot of information about them, and lastly I'll do fandom stuff (blog and fic recs, and I also snuck in a bit about some of my favorite comic artists hehe) xox
the thing I love about dc is that there's so many characters and hero teams that there's something for everyone. my favorite characters might not be someone else's favorite, because there are literally hundreds to choose from and it can be overwhelming at first but it's so cool having such a wide variety of characters to love!!
that said, something to keep in mind is that almost every version of a character you see/read is gonna be a little different. there are changes across mediums (comics to movies) and even across universes, and sometimes the writers are just lazy and don't bother doing research on the character they're trying to write. many of these characters have been around since the 1930s, with literally thousands of appearances in different comics and tv shows, so they've been through a few hundred different writers and editors, each with a slightly different idea of who the character is. batman can be portrayed as a kind, caring father in one comic, but in another, he hits his kids and forces them to eat rats. those two facts are both technically canon, but since they're so contradictory to each other, the audience gets to choose which one is their canon*. it sounds really overwhelming at first, but it's actually one of my favorite things about dc, because it's almost like a sandbox. we can cherrypick our favorite things from canon to form our Better, Personal canon, and leave the rest out <3
*everyone you talk to in the fandom will also have a different preferred "canon." and technically most of them aren't even fanonizing things too much; they're just looking at a different side of canon.
MOVIES
unlike marvel, dc doesn't really have a coherent "cinematic universe," but not for lack of trying. if you're looking for comic book accuracy, generally the movies aren't a great place to go, but they're still enjoyable and can at least give you the starting information for a character!
the dark knight trilogy (batman begins, the dark knight, the dark knight rises)
this one is HARDLY comics-accurate, but overall they're very enjoyable (and the soundtrack is a whole VIBE btw). it's a good general intro to the basic lore of batman (his parents' deaths, alfred, lucius fox, etc) but it also leaves out a lot of the batman mythos (like robin).
the batman (2022)
in my opinion, this movie is the closest live action movie to what comics batman actually is. it was very definitely an adaptation that took liberties, but I really felt like it was a faithful adaptation of comics batman and what motivates him.
batman: under the red hood
this one is an animated adaptation of one of my FAVORITE comics of all time by the same name, and I love the movie almost as much as I love the comic :] there are a few things lost in translation from comic -> movie, and a few characters/events are left out, but overall it's one of my favorite batman movies of ALL time
some other movies that aren't super accurate but alright:*
aquaman
wonder woman
*there's also movies like zack snyder's justice league and batman vs superman but the one thing comics fandom can agree on is that. they're bad. they're soooo bad. ofc you can watch them but just know that the characterizations are soooooo off base for pretty much everyone. and I know that I said that characterizations can be played with a little bit but the characters aren't even recognizable in those movies so like.....are they even the same character ?? anyway
TV SHOWS - ANIMATED
unlike the movies, the dcau (dc animated universe) is REALLY good. some of the shows are interconnected and happen in the same continuity, but it's unclear if all of them are, but the shows have little influence on each other so it doesn't really matter anyway. there'll just be an easter egg here or there referencing another show.
young justice*
has a very large ensemble cast, and is a good intro to the younger heroes in dc!!
justice league unlimited*
another show with a large cast, but this one is about the older/adult heroes in the justice league.
green lantern: the animated series
one of my personal favorites out of these; highly recommended if you're at all interested in lanterns, because it's a very good introduction to lantern lore (which can be pretty complicated). it's also just very fun all around, and one of my favorite lantern characters of all time is in this show! unfortunately, he was created specifically for gl:tas, and so hasn't made any appearances in any comics/shows with the exception of a single episode of young justice. but I lomve him <3
teen titans
this was actually my "gateway" media that got me into dc in the first place!! it's very fun and dynamic, and is a good intro to the titans, a very popular superhero team**
batman: the animated series
I haven't seen very far into this one, but from what I've seen/heard, it's a very fun show!! from what I remember, it has quite a few batfam characters in it, as well, not just batman himself
batman beyond
I also haven't seen all of this, but I like it a lot! it's set 50ish(?) years in the future of b:tas (as far as I know you don't have to watch b:tas beforehand though) and is about the new batman, terry mcginnis. I really like it because terry's super funny and it's almost like spiderman in batman's suit!! (he made the joker cry once. it's glorious)
*for getting into comics, I'd recommend at least skimming a few eps of these shows with large casts to see if you have a character you really like/want to know more about, then you can ask for/find the specific comics that character is in. this is imo the easiest way to get into comics, and there are a LOT of people you can ask for comic recs. I'll give all the recs I have, but I've been in the dc fandom for a long time and I can find specific rec lists for you fairly easily if you want to read about a character I don't know much about. I have Connections (tm)
**I haven't read enough titans comics to know for sure, but I've heard that the team lineups are a little different than the show depending on what comics you read.
TV SHOWS - LIVE ACTION
titans
it's kind of shitty but by god it's OUR kinda shitty show <3 the casting for both koriand'r and dick grayson is PERFECT btw. I cannot tell you anything about plot. I've seen the first few seasons. I have no idea what happened. (I don't think it'd be too far off the mark to call this the "teen wolf" show of dc tbh)
ismahawk's nightwing series
this is a fanmade web series that has a few things I dislike (jason's characterization, mostly) but is overall fairly high quality and very fun!! dick grayson (nightwing) is the focus, but other characters also make appearances!
cw shows (yes these are their own category)
I haven't seen a lot of these in a long time so some of them don't have commentary
arrow
hoooooo boy,,,,,,this one's a doozy. the writers wanted to make a batman show I think. but they had green arrow instead. so arrow!oliver queen is actually closer to comics!bruce wayne than he is to comics!oliver queen. a lot of people don't want to get into comics ollie because they didn't like arrow ollie, but rest assured that comics ollie is sooooooooo much better godbless
legends of tomorrow
most of the characters here aren't in the comics that much but this is still probably my favorite cw show. it's funky it's fun it's ridiculously stupid it requires net zero braincells. I love it
supergirl
the flash
batwoman
I don't know enough about kate kane to tell you if this is comics-accurate or not but tbh it's fairly enjoyable regardless!
black lightning
GAMES
there are a lot of dc-related games out there that I've never gotten into, but there is one that I know a good deal about because it's soooo <333
batman: arkham knight
this one is an alternate universe version of jason todd's death and resurrection. I think there are also some comics out there set in this same universe, but at the moment I don't know titles. but basically, instead of dying in a warehouse, jason was imprisoned and tortured for 2 years by the joker. the details are lost on me but he somehow ends up free, but by this point he's been tortured and brainwashed into working with the joker and trying to bring batman down. overall it's a very emotionally devastating game and I'm a known masochist <3 so <3
COMICS
a lot of people are afraid to get into comics because of how overwhelming they are, but I highly encourage it to any new dc fan because they're so much fun!! the fandom is also filled with super nice people who are totally willing to help find comics to read for a specific character, and there are plenty of websites to read comics on for free! it's genuinely such a fun media to get into!
first of all, there's some vocab that'll be helpful to know in comics-land:
continuity - refers to a specific amount of time within the publishing record (ex: the new52 is a continuity spanning from about 2011 to 2016)
issue - a "chapter" of a comic book series (ex: green lantern #5 is the 5th chapter of that particular green lantern series)
volume - another word for "series"; also defined as a group of issues
mini-series - a comic with a set amount of issues (also known as a limited series)
one-shot - a big single-issue comic book
ongoing - a series that is currently being written/published (usually updates weekly or biweekly)
reboot - ends a continuity to recreate characters and plotlines from the very beginning (there are a few different reboots you might hear mentioned, including crisis on infinite earths, new52 [or n52], and rebirth)
retcon - when a past event is changed/written over without a reboot happening
run - a consecutive string of issues written by a single author
variant - an alternate cover of an issue
elseworld - a comic or story that takes place in an alternate universe; as such, the events of that story have no effect on the main timeline (dc vs vampires, a story where half the justice league is turned into evil vampires that took over the world and killed the other half of the justice league, is an elseworld). I like elseworlds because they're fun to explore and read without actually like. being concerned about long-term effects on the characters. it's like reading fanfiction with art
comics are also broken down into 4 main "eras" that aren't necessary for reading but can be good to know regardless:
Golden Age (1938-1956)
Silver Age (1956-1970)
Bronze Age (1970-1985)
Modern Age (1985-Present Day)
because comics are so convoluted with so many timelines and reboots and origins, you can really just jump in ANYWHERE, without worrying about chronological order (spoiler alert, it doesn't exist); and if you feel daunted and overwhelmed by the idea of just....jumping in there, don't worry!!! I felt the same exact way when I was just starting, and that's what the reading lists linked below are for!! they'll give you a place to start getting your feet wet :]
dc comics can also be grouped by which teams/families they're about. (as far as I know, the [hero]fam groups were coined by fandom as a means of grouping the literal crime fighting found families together, but groups like the titans and justice league actually exist in-universe as well). most (if not all) characters belong to at least ONE group, so if you like a character and want to get into someone similar, the groups that character is in might be a good place to start since they're usually grouped together by similar powers/origins. I listed the [hero]fam groups first, and the canon, in-universe teams last. I don't know much about some of them so I didn't add commentary on those, and each person's name will be formatted like this: given name/superhero name/additional superhero name (if applicable)
batfam
most main continuities include bruce wayne/batman, dick grayson/robin/nightwing, jason todd/robin/red hood, tim drake/red robin/robin, cassandra cain/black bat/orphan/batgirl, damian wayne/robin, alfred pennyworth, stephanie brown/batgirl/robin/spoiler, duke thomas/signal*, and barbara gordon/batgirl/oracle. however, some characters, such as luke fox, helena wayne, carrie kelley, and harper row, only exist in specific timelines/continuities/alternate universes. *duke thomas was created in the n52 reboot, so he didn't exist before about 2011, but is considered part of the batfam in most current timelines. the batfam is largely a pretty messy, dysfunctional superhero family, and I love that about them because it's sooo interesting to dig into. but if you want a wholesome superhero family, I suggest some of the others in dc (there's a large number of people in the dc fandom who have never read a single comic but write fic/blog about the batfam, but they make the batfam super sweet and wholesome [hugely ooc for the most part] when there are SO many canon superhero fams that have the exact vibes they're going for. basically: fanon batfam = canon arrowfam/flashfam/superfam)
superfam
most main continuities include clark kent/superman (kal el), lois lane, conner kent/superboy (kon el), bizarro, and jonathan kent/superboy (jon el). I don't know as much about the superfam but there are a handful of characters that only exist in certain continuities here, too.
flashfam
most main continuities include barry allen/the flash, iris west-allen, wally west/kid flash/the flash, jay garrick, avery ho/the flash, bart allen/impulse, irey west, jesse quick/jesse chambers, and a few more.
arrowfam
most main continuities include oliver queen/green arrow, dinah lance/black canary, roy harper/speedy/red arrow/arsenal, connor hawke/green arrow, cissie king-jones, mia dearden/speedy, and emiko queen/red arrow. (if you've seen arrow, expect these characters to be WAY different than how they were portrayed in the show)
wonderfam
most main continuities include diana prince/wonder woman, nubia, donna troy/wonder girl/troia/wonder woman, cassie sandsmark/wonder girl, and artemis bana-mighdall. yara flor is wonder woman in the future state universe, but I don't know if she's part of the fam in the main continuity
lanternfam
this can technically refer to any number of lantern groups, since there are more than one faction or "corps" of lantern, but in this case it's green. in most continuities, the green lantern corps includes hal jordan/parallax/specter, kyle rayner/white lantern/ion, guy gardner, john stewart, alan scott, simon baz, jessica cruz, and jo mullein. (all of them go by green lantern by default, but some have additional names for one reason or another) there are a lot more nonhuman lanterns, since green lanterns operate in space, but that's already a pretty extensive list so I just left it at the humans lmao
aquafam
justice league
one of the biggest teams in dc; it has the "trinity," batman, superman, and wonder woman, and also has a lot of lesser known characters like blue beetle, booster gold, and red tornado.
titans
this team includes dick grayson/nightwing (batfam), wally west/kid flash/the flash (flashfam)*, garfield logan/beast boy, koriand'r/starfire, donna troy/wonder girl/wonder woman, roy harper/speedy/arsenal/red arrow, garth/aqualad etc. *the team lineup largely depends on which comic you read; wally isn't a titan very often compared to the others but some still consider him part of the core team
young justice*
this team includes tim drake/red robin/robin, cassie sandsmark/wonder girl, conner kent/superboy, and bart allen/impulse *not to be confused with the tv show young justice. they have the same title but are two completely different things
outsiders
outlaws
birds of prey
now onto some recs!!! I'm starting with what I know, but if there's ever a character you want to read more about, don't hesitate to ask me!!! I can usually find most rec/reading lists pretty easily and if not, I can refer you to someone who can!!
webtoon
there's a handful of comics on webtoon, each focusing on a different character or group! I haven't read some of them, so only a few actually have commentary lol
vixen: nyc
zatanna & the ripper
wayne family adventures
funky and fun! if you want to learn more about the batfam both as a group and as individuals, this is a great place to start!* *this specific webtoon is in the "slice of life" genre and intended to be fun and lighthearted, so all the characters are highly fanonized/watered down to fit the comedy genre better. it's still enjoyable, but just know going in that if you read any actual comics with the batfam expecting it to be just as wholesome and fun, you'll be disappointed. and if you do enjoy the wholesome superhero family vibes, I recommend reading from the flashfam, arrowfam, or superfam comics, since those are all closer to the wfa batfam vibe than the canon comics batfam.
red hood: outlaws**
features jason todd/red hood, bizarro, and artemis bana-mighdall. as far as I know its tone is much closer to actual comics than wfa. the art is gorgeous, too
**I haven't read past the first few chapters of this one because I REALLY don't like jason's characterization. but he's my silly little guy and I'm SUPER picky about how he's written, so take my opinion for a grain lmao
now for some general recs!!!! there are reading lists out there that are much more coherent and legible than what I can make, so I linked a few for my personal favorite characters and some others :] some of them have a playlist that I made, and I'll also give a very brief overview of the character!!!
also note that these reading lists are in no way meant to be overwhelming and restrictive. if you're overwhelmed by the sheer amount of recs, there's no rule or Comic Book Overlord who will frown down upon you if you don't read them in order or even at all. comics are meant to be fun and they should be!! all the lists do is give you a few options/places to start, but they're just suggestions!! literally go wild go crazy
dick grayson (my playlist) (reading list 1 [robin])
he's the oldest son of bruce wayne! he was part of a traveling circus as a kid, but his parents were murdered when he was young and he was taken in by bruce wayne and became robin. he joined the titans, and eventually outgrew the robin mantle and took on the name nightwing. my current favorite comic with him is batman/superman: world's finest, which is on the reading list but it's pretty far down and I would have put it much higher if it were me because it's sooo <333 (dan mora's art is *chef's kiss*) I looked EVERYWHERE for a reading list about him as nightwing but unfortunately I couldn't find one. but there are a few "nightwing" series around which will probably be good places to start.
jason todd (my playlist) (reading list)
you already got the spiel about him <3 he's my most specialest blorbo bingus boy and if someone writes him wrong I shoot lasers from my eyes
cassandra cain (reading list)
she was raised by assassins but had such a strong moral compass that she ran away and became a superhero instead <3 she was batgirl, black bat, and orphan, and whatever name she currently goes by depends entirely on which comic you read lmao
damian wayne (my playlist)
the only one of bruce wayne's kids who is actually biologically related to him. he was raised in the league of assassins by talia al ghul* before being sent to gotham to live with bruce, where he became robin *talia was originally a good, kind character who was retconned into a manipulative, abusive bitch of a character which is SUCH a disservice to her but unfortunately a lot of current comics have jumped on the bandwagon of the retcon :( AGAIN, I couldn't find a rec list for the LIFE of me, but some good comics to start at are batman: batman and son, batman and robin 2006*, and supersons** *this comic takes place after bruce wayne temporarily "dies" during....final crisis, I think. you don't need to understand the crisis to read (I still don't understand any of the crises tbh) but all you need to know is that dick grayson has taken on the mantle of batman during this run; so dick was batman and damian was his robin. I love their relationship so much it makes me INSANE **this comic features a teamup between damian and jon kent (superboy). I looooooooove their friendship so much
duke thomas
<3333333 he's the only batfam character with powers, and he uses them for chaos only <3 again, I couldn't find a list, but here are some starters: we are robin, robin war, batman and the signal, and batman and the outsiders vol. 3
kyle rayner (my playlist) (reading list)
you've also heard his spiel <33333
connor hawke (reading list)
he's the biological son of oliver queen and takes up the mantle of green arrow after ollie dies (temporarily). he and kyle are bffs who I think should kiss once or twice. and he's also canonically asexual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wally west (reading list)
he started out as kid flash, and I think in current comics right now he's the flash
some comic reading websites!!!!!!!!
webtoon (everything in the webtoon category above can be found here; they're free to read unless you pay for early access to new chapters)
comiconlinefree.net
readcomiconline.li
readcomicsfree.net
between those three, you should be able to find any comics you'd like to read; I highly recommend using an adblocker for them if you can.

OTHER STUFF
this doesn't have to do with anything but I just wanted to show off some of my favorite dc artists. the great thing about comics as a medium is that the art can add SOOOOO much to the experience (but unfortunately sometimes the art is ugly as FUCK so it's a 50/50 chance lmfao) but there are some artists who I would probably sell my soul to. btw.

hello hello~ i saw your post about rw&b from another blog and decided to give your blog a look through. i just wanted to say really thank you for bringing these representation issues to the conversation, even if it's tiring and hard :')
i thought about it and i really could only name a few characters on tv that i've seen recently who were jewish (jake/gina from b99 and dr. taub from house md). as a jew, even nonreligious like many of us are, the culture is still such an important part of the community, and yet none of us really get to see this representation on screen - especially minorities within the jewish minority (i have a friend who's half chinese half jewish for ex).
i didn't grow up with religion (we only celebrated passover sometimes and we usually forgot to light the hanukkah candles after day 3), but we ate latkes and matzah and hamantashen and my mom and grandparents (also nonreligious jews) regularly used yiddish words like schlep and schmutz which I didn't know wasn't normal until i had college friends ask me what they meant.
anyway this ask doesn't really have a point but i'm really glad to see that this kind of issue is being talked about at some level, especially as you've seen, it keeps getting denied and pushed down (like saying having a jewish producer on a movie means we shouldn't have jewish actors??? wtf). even though i haven't experienced much discrimination myself (i don't have an easily identifiable/stereotypical jewish name or appearance) many many people have (for literally thousands of years) and there's so much antisemitism in our society. it's exhausting seeing it, hearing about it, reading it in books, etc. sorry for the very long message but sending much love and gratitude <3<3 you're amazing
Thank you so much for this!!!
I was just talking to someone else about Jake from Brooklyn 99, I’m gonna watch the show because everyone keeps telling me great things! And Taub… yikes… his character isn’t bad, but man do they really use his Jewishness as a punchline sometimes, granted House does it with everyone, but it feels more offensive with Taub. Dr Cuddy in House is Jewish too, played by Lisa Edelstein. But that was more of the case that she was Jewish and they let her character be too. But yeah, Jewish rep is such a small fraction of characters, and meaningful Jewish rep even more so.
There will be “Jewish” TV shows like The Goldbergs or Maisel, and people consider that rep… but 1. There are almost no Jewish actors in either of those shows, 2. Heavily stereotyped, 3. If the only time you can see more than one of two Jews on screen is in a show that is about Jews… It’s still othering Jews by literally putting them into a different show. I can easily name more than a dozen shows with no Jewish characters, which is just so terrible. Especially because there are so many different Jews in the world. Not every Jew is from New York and speaking Yiddish. There’s an entire other type of Judaism called Sephardic Judaism and there’s almost no rep there. Plus, there is barely any rep for Jews of color (especially played by Jews of color). I also have a friend who’s Jewish and Chinese, apparently that’s a super huge sector… yet, I can’t remember the last time I ever saw that represented by an actor who is. Sorry, little rant.
I love hearing about people’s Jewish upbringing, because there’s such a diverse range in the way people live their Jewish lives, and it doesn’t make any Jew more or less Jewish than another. I’m really glad you’ve never been discriminated against, like honest to god that makes me so happy. I’m the total opposite. Nearly been killed and attacked a handful of times, so any time another Jew tells me they’re able to live without worrying for their life, it makes me so happy and hopeful that maybe one day we all can. Probably a big hope lol, but maybe.
And yeah, Jewish representation is something that people don’t wanna hear about, because it would require people to understand more about Judaism and Jewishness, and due to history/society/culture, many think they already know everything and learning more would make them reevaluate things. And many don’t want to.
Thanks again for your message, Anon! Great to hear from you!!

god i just love languages, they're so cooollll like you're telling me that these words im using thousands of other people have used before me? that they used them in infinite combinations to tell other people an infinite amount of things and ideas? that some of these words came from latin, through old french and others came from german and sometimes whole groups of people in one area or another just started to talk in different ways than another group of people in another area and the languages they spoke began to evolve away from each other? that these changes were both all at once and sometimes so subtle that it wasn't until some grammarian or another pointed it out that we were like 'oh yeah right, that is how we say things now' and they just kept it like that?
and the fact that i can literally write all of this out in another language and someone else who wouldn't know who i am, what my thoughts are could read it and understand it? that i could stir up new thoughts in person's mind that i otherwise would have heard talking and would have thought they were speaking gibberish? you're telling me i can train my brain to talk to other people? that i can just make different sounds and have them mean the same thing and someone will understand me?
like i just kinda can't get over that?

Like, is the gist "Real life pedophilia/incest/rape is bad, and stories saying these things are good are bad, but including these topics in a story isn't inherently bad, so the people being like 'hey, maybe Ao3 shouldn't have so much kiddie porn there's an entire category called "Underage"' are just overreacting and making things worse?" Because it feels like you're saying, "your negative reaction to this stuff is valid, but also you're annoying and prudish and bad and really you aren't valid."
So here’s the thing: it really does not sound like you're asking this question because you want my answer, it sounds like you want to be angry with me and have a fight. And fair enough! I'm not terribly interested in a fight, but apparently this is my day to dive into this topic as thoughtfully and honestly as I can be. Maybe I'll say something you haven't already heard from other people before. Maybe not! Only you, anonymous asker, know that.
To begin with, you got part of the gist right. Real life rape (including child abuse/child sexual abuse as well as incest) is bad. Stories about rape, about underage sex, and about incest, are stories.
They're stories. They're pixels on a screen. They're not real. Whether they claim that rape is good, or bad, or sexy, or melodramatic, or life-destroying, or a normal Tuesday afternoon. They're stories.
And having a negative reaction to them is valid. Stories can stir up powerful emotions in people. It is absolutely, 100%, fair and valid and even normal for there to be certain tropes, plot elements, events, and kinds of content that make you upset and that you never want to see in a story you read, ever. You don't have to want to read about sex. You don't have to want to read any of it. That doesn't make you bad.
There are tropes, plot elements, events, and kinds of content that upset me. There are stories I won't read. The same is true of literally everyone else I know. Even though I know the stories aren't real. Even though I know the things happening in them are happening to fictional characters, who do not exist, who I cannot protect and who also cannot be harmed because they're not real. Even then, I can be made sad and scared and upset and hurt by reading those stories. And that is okay and that is valid and I am not bad or wrong for being upset about the story I've read, and neither are you.
But that doesn't mean the story doesn't have value to somebody else. That doesn't mean the story isn't important to somebody else.
What I see most often coming from antis, possibly even including yourself, is an overwhelming desire to protect. They want to keep themselves and others--possibly people they know, possibly hypothetical people they may never meet--safe from being hurt by these stories. And that desire to protect, also, is normal. It's even admirable! The problem, though, the thing that does more harm than good, is when that desire to protect drives people to lash out against things that matter to other people.
There is a difference between actual rape and stories about rape. There is a difference between a story that could theoretically hurt somebody, someday (which is all stories, always), and a story that hurts you personally. And there is a difference between a story that hurts you personally, and a story that is inherently poisonous to everyone who touches it.
We know--absolutely, scientifically, incontrovertibly--that stories about rape do not make people rapists. Yes, even the stories where the rape is there to be sexy. Even stories where the person being raped is a child. Even then. Fiction is not the same thing as normalization; again, there are far smarter people who have written far more extensively on that topic than I, and next time I come across something that goes more into detail on this point I promise I will reblog it. If this really is the thing you're afraid of, I may not be the right person to convince you that this is an unfounded fear, but I know someone out there can elaborate on it.
(Unfounded, which is not the same thing as invalid. My mother's claustrophobia is unfounded; it flares up in many situations where there's no physical threat whatsoever, where she has plenty of space to move and air to breathe. It's still real. It still chokes her. It's still valid, she is not bad or broken to feel that way, and she still can't drive through certain tunnels. The fear is real. But the thing she's afraid of can't physically hurt her, and that is worth knowing in terms of how she deals with it.)
We know, absolutely, scientifically, and incontrovertibly, that stories about rape and many, many, many other things can hurt and even traumatize their readers. Even though the situation you're reacting to is not real and you receive no physical injury, you can still be hurt by it. The key word there, though, is readers. The fact that the horror genre is out there terrifying people who enjoy being terrified for fun does not damage me unless I do something stupid and try listening to the Magnus Archives again and end up tense and miserable and paranoid for the rest of the week. The fact that guacamole is apparently delicious to everybody else in the world does not hurt me unless I do something stupid and order the wrong thing at a restaurant, and end up itchy and miserable with a little trouble breathing for the rest of the night.
The fact that there are, yes, tens of thousands of fics on AO3 in which characters under the age of 18 have sex? It can't hurt you. Those fics do not hurt you by existing. They can only hurt you if you read them. They can only hurt anyone who reads them. That's why there is an 'Underage' tag--and it's worth noting, 'Underage' is a warning, not a category. Nobody wants you to get hurt reading the wrong fic, any more than the sushi chef wants my throat to swell up because I ordered something with avocado. Literally nobody wants that.
The flip side, of course, is that you hating each and every one of those fics individually and as a group doesn't actually hurt me, or anyone else who writes, reads, or enjoys them. By itself. You can hate anything you like, and fic writers can write anything they like, and it all comes out in the end, more or less. Except.
Except that reading fic is always, entirely, 100% opt-in, and online harassment isn't even opt-out. Some antis have a nasty habit of going after writers whose content they don't like; climbing into inboxes and comments sections, calling those writers nasty names, throwing around cruelties and aggression and insults. I know that's not the same thing as simply disliking a genre, or even passively disagreeing with its existence (although disliking a genre and disagreeing with its right to exist are also very different things). I know not all antis do that. I don't know you, anon, but based on the speed and aggressiveness of this response to my last post, I can't help but wonder if you would do that.
And that does hurt people. Just like it might hurt you if someone threw a bunch of content that makes you uncomfortable into your inbox. Including the harasser, actually--because getting into fights with strangers on the internet about things that make you angry, sad, defensive, and upset isn't good for anybody. Including both you and me.
Anyway, after yet another lengthy ramble, let's get the tl;dr response to your ask here: nobody is ever bad or wrong for disliking certain content in their stories, no matter what that content is. You and your emotions are valid. The "overreacting and making things worse" part isn't about what you feel, but what you do with it. Constantly engaging with places where the thing that upsets you will probably show up, even to argue and try to fight it, will make things worse in the sense that now you're spending way more time thinking about this thing that makes you upset and angry, thereby leaving you more upset and angry. Getting together with a bunch of your upset, angry friends to make your feelings everybody else's problem? Makes fandom a more toxic place for everyone else involved.
Don't read stuff that's going to hurt you. Don't make other people read stuff that's going to hurt them. That's the whole thing, really.

THE DUMB BLONDE — denki k.
Tumblr media
cw. reverse comfort, cursing, not proof read. note. i read some denki angst so i'm making it everyone else's problem.
Tumblr media
he knew it. as he made his way through the UA corridors, denki could feel the eyes on him, and even though he couldn't hear it— he knew that students and teachers alike were whispering about him, probably getting a good laugh at his failures again. he didn't mean to go into his ‘whey’ mode during the training, he didn't want it to happen, it just does, it's his quirk drawback and he's trying so hard to not reach the drawback point a few minutes into battle;
but no one ever saw that.
they just saw his failures and made fun of his dumb face, as if he isn't already dumb enough, denki could literally hear their words from the way they were looking at him. he's just a dumb blonde. the words rang through his head. dumb blonde.
was he reduced to just a dumb blonde? does anyone even know his name?
he was outside now, taking long steps towards the dorms, breathing in and out, trying to keep his breath steady and praying he won't have a breakdown outside. he kept his eyes on the gravel, looking up occasionally to make sure he didn't walk into a tree— that would add onto the list of ‘denki's dumb moments.’ he huffed and walked into the dormitory.
“hey.”
he was greeted before he could walk through the door to his dorm.
averting his eyes from you, he mumbled, “hi.”
“i'm not going to pry, but, is something wrong?” you asked him, taking ahold of his hands that lay limp on his sides.
“am i that obvious?” he managed a weak grin.
you shook your head, “well, kind of. you weren't excited as you usually were to greet me. plus, you looked away, and the denki kaminari i know always holds eye contact— at least, when he's not flustered.” you smile at the light red that spread across his cheeks to his ears. “so, do you wanna tell me what's wrong?”
he leaned against the door and wiped his eyes with his sleeves. “i don’t know… i guess i’m just tired of everyone calling me a dumb blonde, you know?” you nod for him to continue. “on my way here, everyone was whispering and giggling at me— and i don’t want to be laughed at. it’s just hard for me sometimes, but i’m trying, why can’t they see that?” a tear rolled down his cheek, but he made no attempt to brush it away. “i know i’m not smart as yaoyorozu or iida or like, anyone else in our class but, i’m not actually, just a dumb blonde, right?” he looks at you with such hopeful eyes that you’re sure he’ll start sobbing if you deny and say no.
“i've told you this a thousand times and i'll say it again; you’re smart, denki, you just don’t show it.” you cup his face in your hands and brush away his tears with your thumbs. “and i can see you’re trying— and i’m so proud of you for that. you keep failing but you still try; even if you fail again, you always get up and try again, no matter how whiny you are, you still do it.” you pause for a bit to watch him slightly giggle.
“and even if you aren't smart as everyone else there are so many more qualities of yours that i am in love with. you're energetic, friendly, supportive, funny, you're always there for your friends when they need you— even if they themselves can't see that. you always know how to make someone smile when they're having a shitty day, you're literally everyone's hypeman, you don't hesitate to stand up to someone when they trash talk your friends, and, you're just— you're just amazing.”
denki tears up again, this time from the overwhelming amount of happiness he felt and not because of the sadness and self loathe he had for not being as smart as he wanted to be. “t-thank you,” he places his hands on your own that were cradling his face, closing his eyes as he savors the moment. “so,” his voice shakes and he opens his eyes as he takes a deep breath to compose himself. “does that mean, i'm not just a dumb blonde?”
“of course you aren't just a dumb blonde,” you smile, “that's what i've been telling you this whole time.”
returning the smile, he drops his hands so he can wrap them around you and lean his head on your shoulder, “i love you.” he whispers into the quiet air.
“i love you too.”
.....
“we should probably get inside before someone sees us like this and tells the whole class—”
“yeah, we probably should.”

I love the new chapter! Your writing is amazing:)
Do you have any writing tips you use that you’d be willing to pass on?
hi this response is v delayed so the ch is no longer new but thank you!! 💕
i wish i had more/better writing tips but i feel like a lot of my writing process is largely intuitive and isn't coming so much from me like...thinking through "oh x works really well and y doesn't work well" yknow? that being said, there are 2 things i can think of that have sort of been helpful realizations for me over the past year or two (these will probably sound very generic and are most likely things that thousands of other people have already said, but for me personally they were both just driven home recently so bear with me lol)
1 - no writing is bad writing!!
i know this is so cliché but like...i personally am a big perfectionist and sometimes i'll give up on a project if i feel like i can't get it just right, so i think it took me a while to accept the fact that literally everything i've written (including the embarrassing fanfiction from high school and the god-awful self-insert oc stories from middle school) has contributed to getting to the point i'm at now, where i'm pretty confident in my ability as a writer :) writing is a skill just like playing an instrument or learning a language; you have to practice to get better, and any time spent writing is practice and is helping like...build creative muscle or whatever. i have years and years of bad writing squirrelled away on flash drives and old word docs and dusty corners of the internet, and most of it makes me cringe to look back on, but none of the time spent writing shitty stories was time wasted because i had fun doing it and it ultimately helped me improve! so rather than focusing on perfection in writing or worrying about making sure it's good, i think it's honestly more important to just focus on enjoying the process :) which leads me to my second point...
2 - write stories that you want to read!!
again, this might seem obvious and self explanatory, but i feel like especially with social media and influencer culture and the late capitalist hellscape we're all descending into there's this mentality that you need an audience to validate the things you're creating, like art and literature should only exist to be consumed. and i think this mentality is damaging for a lot of reasons, but the one i'll focus on right now is that i think it's incredibly easy to get burnt out when you're creating for other people.
like, ok. i feel like i've had the greatest personal growth with my own writing over the past year and a half, and it started because i was just like "fuck it i want to read the captive prince series from laurent's perspective," and so i wrote it. and part of me was like - oh, this isn't real writing because i'm just rewriting a book series, i'm not coming up with a plot or making up my own characters, etc etc. but the thing is i had tried to write original novels in the past and had always just hit a plateau partway through, so even though part of me was like oh there's no purpose to this, it's not like it's something i'll ever be able to publish--it was just fun! like i was just genuinely having a good time! and it ended up being really good writing practice, because i got to just focus on this in-depth character study + also prove to myself that i could sit down and churn out a book-length work of fiction, even if i was following someone else's plot.
and so then i sort of got out of my own head about like...only ever writing with the ultimate goal of publication in mind, and started focusing more on just writing for fun. and that led to atyd - sirius's pov, which sort of exploded, and then i found myself starting to get bogged down again in focusing on like -- oh, how many people have read this chapter, how many people have commented, what good things are people saying, what bad things are people saying, etc etc. and i started to get in my own head again about the fact that i was rewriting a story, the kind of impostor syndrome mentality of like "well this isn't real writing because it's not 100% original" etc etc etc. and so any time i started worrying about how my writing was being ~consumed by an audience~ i had to like check myself and take a step back and remind myself that at the end of the day, i was writing for me, because it was a story that i wanted to have and to read and while it was amazing and so so special to have so many people invested in the project, it was never really about providing a story for an audience--that was just a happy side effect and not something that i could sustainably centre my writing process around.
and again, even though i was following someone else's plot and building on an already-existing world and characters, sirius's pov helped me grow so much as a writer and also gave me the confidence to feel like i could actually, feasibly write a novel on my own, which is genuinely something that i never knew whether i'd be capable of because i struggled so much in the past. but now i'm essentially writing my own book with this dorlene fic, and i don't think that's something i'd have been capable of a year ago!
anyway, all that is to say -- don't worry about whether your writing is "serious" or publishable or something that will appeal to a broad audience, and try not to measure the worth of your writing based on other people. write a story that you want to read, because the best way to avoid burnout is to make sure that you're having fun writing! like even when i need a break from actually writing my current fic, i'll still find myself thinking about future scenes i want to write + daydreaming + planning it out in my head because it's a story i want to read, and that's what gets me excited to continue writing it! it's really fun to share your writing with an audience and it's so so so amazing to hear that your work resonates with people (seriously, cannot emphasize enough how much i appreciate those of u who send messages like this + leave comments + kudos + all that 💕), but for me the biggest breakthrough i had with my writing was realizing that my most important reader is myself (as cheesy as that is) 🕺 💞

Tell All
Tumblr media
A/n: I cried when I got this request. It literally took me back to being 14 years old writing cringe fanfics on wattpad of one direction and their super stereotypical likes and dislikes lol also before I found out that black people wrote imagines so I was always reading "and Yn brushed her long blonde hair up into a messy bun and decided she looked good and was ready to go about her day, making sure she applied sunscreen because her fair skin burned easily" those were good times. Also changed it up a little reader and Harry stayed together and are in an amazing relationship because who wouldn’t want to be exclusive it’s Harry fucking styles. Also it’s my first Harry imagine so it definitely sucks lol
Warnings: a few swear words, sucky writing and probably a ton of mistakes.
"Let's welcome our guest" Lauren the host says and I run on stage and she pulls me into a big hug as everyone cheers and I hug her back, rocking us back and forth.
"Oh my god, how are you?" I ask kissing her cheek as I pull back.
"I'm so good, super glad you're here" she says.
"You and me both" I say pulling away fully and turning to the audience and I smile at them.
"And how are you all?" I ask and they all cheer so I laugh.
"That's good to hear" I say sitting down and I smile.
"So I have yet to read your book, your tell all as it has yet to come out officially. I'm hoping you could read just a little of it" she says handing me the book I sent her yesterday and I nod opening it to the chapter I want to read from.
"Keep in mind everyone, if you haven't already preordered Yn's book do it. It comes out in four days and I seen online from your official site it’s already sold out" she says and I smile at her nodding.
“Yeah but I’ve partnered with a bunch of stores so if they have books you can buy it. Also I’m donating a bunch of books” I say and she smiles.
“Really?” She asks and I nod.
“Yeah, with every book bought it’s a meal for a family so I bought out like 3 thousand copies and so that’s 3 thousand families fed and not even to mention all the copies that have been ordered from everyone. So now I have all these books and will be giving them out starting today” I say and everyone in the audience cheers.
“Sounds like you guys are actually excited so I’ll start with you” I say and they cheer even louder and I laugh.
"Ready?" She asks and I nod.
"I'm so nervous" she says giggling and I laugh.
"You're nervous, how do you think I feel? You guys are the first people besides my mom that are hearing anything from it. But the chapter I chose is called ‘Oh No I'm Pregnant’ so we’ll start there" I say and everyone starts screaming in the audience and I have to cover my ears as I laugh, even Lauren is in shock and I laugh waiting for the screams to die down.
"This isn't what I needed at all. The band is broken up, I don't know what to do with myself. We're only 21 and 20 this can not be happening" I read and she leans in smiling at me.
"I remember my thoughts. Maybe this is for the best. Maybe the break is exactly what we needed at this time so I can focus on being a mother, yes this is exactly what I need because now I can give you all of my attention" I read and the pictures of Winnie pop up on the screen and Lauren turns to look at them.
"Oh my god, she looks like Harry!" Someone screams and I giggle behind the book.
"Look at those curls" Lauren says.
"How am I going to tell him? How will he look at me. Will I just be the woman he made an accidental child with that he won't even want? Will he hate me and say it's not his? What will his family think? His family is some of my biggest supporters. We have been together for a while but we’ve never even talked about kids" I read.
"Do I tell him immediately or do I tell him later? I have all these questions and no one to help me answer them" I read flipping the page and everyone is listening while watching videos of Winnie and I, some of them from when she first started walking to now as she's almost five years old and she's in gymnastics doing flips.
"Moving past my doubt of pregnancy. This is called dedicated to Winnie" I say and everyone cheers.
"The minute I heard your heartbeat you took over my every thought. I have to be an amazing mother to you, I have to give you all that you deserve. Then I found out you were a girl. My little girl with a beating heart and I knew your name. As soon as I seen you I knew you were my little Gwyneth" I read and the video pops up of Harry playing the guitar and everyone starts cheering
"We'll be a fine. We'll be a fine line. We'll be a fine line" he sings playing the song on the guitar.
"What are we going to be?" He asks and the camera points towards Winnie who's sat in my lap.
"We'll be alright" she sings bouncing with him to the music.
"Again" he yells over the music and she giggles.
"We'll be alright" she sings through her giggles.
"Why?" He asks still playing the song.
"Because of mommy" she sings to the beat of the song and I tickle her and she giggles doubling over from laughter.
"Because of mummy" Harry sings and I smile at him.
"We'll be alright" he sings standing up and she sings with him and he kisses her head before he quickly pecks my lips and I laugh.
"Holy shit!" Lauren yells as the audience is losing their shit.
"Shut up, shut up, shut up" she says freaking out.
"I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry I know I'm not supposed to swear but how could I not? Did you just see that fucking video? Yn you are going to give everyone a heart attack" she says and she stares at me with wide eyes.
"I can't believe this is real" she says laughing and the audience is still losing their shit and I just laugh through all the chaos.
"You came onto this show letting us think we had the upper hand because you have to answer every question we ask but really you had all the power over us" she says.
"I'm literally crying. Play that back" she says wiping her eyes and they play it again.
"How old is she?" She asks.
"She's four. Almost five" I say.
"What's her full name?" She asks.
"Gwyneth Anne Styles" I say and she covers her face.
"After Harry’s mom? Who all knows about her?" She asks.
"Yes and my family knows, his family, the boys aka Zayn, Niall, Louis and Liam, the food delivery guy that brought me food the whole time I was pregnant from that Chinese food place, the people that help Harry with his albums so everyone in the studio. James Corden and now all of you" I say.
"Harry is a dad. Oh my gosh" she says covering her face and I hear some of the audience crying.
“So are you two like officially together?" She asks and I nod.
"Yeah" I say smiling at her.
"Like dating or marriage because after the news of a whole five year old I can't trust anything else you say" she says and I laugh.
"Just dating, I'm only 25. I'm still trying to figure myself out" I say and she laughs.
"I wouldn't believe that even for a second" she says eyeing me and I laugh.
"Good" I say.
"Good" she says back and then she pauses.
"Wait what?" She asks and I nod.
"What do you mean good?" She asks.
“Ooh that looks like it’s time” I say.
“Uh uh, I need information” she says.
“We have to move on” I say

Hunt and Destroy
“Alright... A lot of new words and names...” You mutter, looking at the floor between your feet. It's late now, and Eleven has been talking for over an hour. The story is long and you had to stop her to ask a few questions. More than a few, actually. Everything sounds like a very strange story, the weirdest, something nobody could come up with. To prove it, Eleven turned the TV on with her mind, skipping through the channels before turning it off again. But you didn't need any proof. You know what you saw and it was very, very real. “Upside down, Demodog, Demodorden...”
“Demogorgon. With a G.” Dustin corrects you, smiling. How can he be smiling?
“Demogorgon, ok.” Nodding, you take a deep breath and stand up. “So... What's the plan?” You ask, pacing around the living room.
“Well, we need to gather the whole party for this,” Max says and the others nod.
“I'll talk to my mom and Hopper,” Jonathan speaks out. “We have to do this as soon as possible so... tomorrow.”
“Yeah. Can it be here?” You're not sure if you can make this demand, but right now, being anywhere else after dark is too much. The sunlight is your protection since it's deadly to the... Demo-something. It burns them. They like it cold, said Eleven.
“Sure.” Jonathan answers and you offer him a small smile in return. “Could it be by five? Before the sunset.”
“Yeah. We can sneak out of the pool again.” It shouldn't be a problem, and if Anthony is there, you could pretend to be sick.
“Tomorrow is our day off.” Billy reminds and you take a deep breath, running a hand through your hair. You completely forgot that.
“By the morning them. Maybe we'll get something figured out we can start working on through the rest of the day.” Mike suggests and the whole party agrees. “We should get going though. It's late.” Mike gets up from his spot on the floor.
“Wait.” Mike can't possibly be for real now. “You're not gonna head home now. With those things out there.” They're getting closer to the town, and it means they'll hang around all night. “It's dangerous. You should stay.”
Most of them agree easily, chattering among them. Max seems excited, but Mike exchanges a look with Nancy. “I don't think our mother would let us crash at Billy's place.” She says with an apologetic look.
“Oh.” You know why. Billy told you where he was going to when the Mind Flayer almost got him... Or better saying, who he was going to meet. Mrs. Wheeler. You did felt weird back then, and it sure makes you feel weird now, but whatever he did before, you left it where it belongs. In the past. “Just call and tell her you'll be crashing at my place.”
“Yeah, man. C'mon. Slumber party.” Dustin cheers, smiling, and once again you can't understand why they aren't terrified. Guess they're just used to it. But how can someone get used to monsters lurking around?
“Alright, then.” Mike agrees, making his way to the phone.
“They didn't get it yet,” Billy whispers in your ear.
“They didn't get it.” Repeating, you wrap your arms around his neck. “I'm really trying not to freak out right now.” The words come out of your mouth, rolling out your tongue.
“Let's go to the bedroom so you can rest and we can talk.”
“Ok...”
“Alright. It's done.” Mike comes back with his sister, gesturing at the front door. “Should we get going?”
You and Billy exchange a look. They really didn't get it. “Uhm... So that's it, guys.” You start, taking Billy's hand and pulling him with you. “You can crash either here or Max's room. First to wake up makes breakfast.”
“Wait. You made me lie to my mom?” Mike asks as you move further into the hall.
“(Y/N) is living here.” Max ends the mystery, and you can feel her massive eye roll.
“Holy shit.” You hear Dustin and Steve mumbling as you get inside the room.
Billy lets you shower first, and as you wait for him, you look through his college books. Everything seems very complicated. Your fingers run through one of the pages, taking in the many numbers, but not really reading anything. Your mind is too far away right now. The scene keeps playing back, over and over. The... Demodog, as the kids call it, its face opening up, the guttural noises it made. You wish it was just a nightmare, but everything seems very, very real.
Billy's sudden touch makes you suck in a sharp breath, shaking a little. “Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you.” The feeling is quickly replaced by the usual warmth he makes you feel. Safety and comfort.
“It's ok, I'm just... How is it possible that the kids seem to be so fine with it?” Turning around, you lay your head on his chest as he pulls you close.
“They've been through a lot. They know how to deal with it and you don't have to participate if you don't want to.” Billy touches your face, fingers caressing the soft skin of your jaw. “I'll do anything to keep you safe, you know that right?”
You do. But staying out would not only make you a coward, but it would mean one less person to help them do whatever they're planning to. And, whatever this thing is, it had a part in messing with Billy's life. With Max's life, and all her friends. It's kind of personal. And, if Billy is in danger, you want to be there to make sure you'll do anything to save him. “I want to do it. I just need time to... Process everything.”
“You won't be alone. And I'm not talking only for myself, but for everyone else too.”
“Ok.”
“Now come. You need to get some sleep.” Billy pulls you to the bed, and, instead of laying beside him as usual, you decide to crawl on top of him.
“Am I crushing you?” You ask as you lay your head on his chest, smiling to feel his strong arms around you.
“Haven't you noticed the weight I can lift? You're nothing compared to it.”
Closing your eyes, you feel as he places a kiss on the top of your head. You've never been like that with Billy, literally on top of him, and it's good. Today, more than ever, you need to feel safe. Protected. And he's the only one who makes you feel this way. “I'm so happy we don't have to go to work tomorrow.”
“Me too.”
Pulling yourself up, you move upwards until your face is close to his. “Do you think the kids are talking about us?” Despite your mind being apparently stuck reminiscing the same moment, the terror in your chest, you try to change the subject. Hopefully, it'll keep you from having nightmares tonight.
“I'm sure of it.” As he speaks, a noise of glass shattering reaches us. “Max!” Billy yells at the top of his lungs, startling you. “What the hell!”
“Stop yelling.” You giggle, playfully slapping his shoulder.
“Just a glass, Billy,” Maxine answers from somewhere in the house.
“Better clean this shit up!” He shouts again.
“Shut up!” You whine, lowering yourself on him a little. “Or else I'll have to make you and it won't be nice.”
Billy raises an eyebrow, that usual smirk making its way to his lips. “Oh, and how exactly wouldn't it be nice?”
Yeah, you didn't really give much thought before making the threat. “Okay then.” Smirking, you close the distance between you until your lips are brushing on his before you sit up abruptly, a hand covering his mouth. “See? I told you it wouldn't be nice.” He opens his mouth under your hand, and you feel his teeth biting your skin. “Billy!” You complain, taking your hand away from his mouth. “I can't believe you bit me, you jerk.”
“You got what you deserved.” He suddenly pulls you down, making you lay next to him. “Now, quit playing around and sleep, princess. Tomorrow will be a long day.”
“Kiss me goodnight then. To keep the bad dreams away.” You ask him softly, melting into the slow, warm kiss he gives you.
It doesn't help with the nightmares though. Twice that night you wake up, a breath caught in your throat. You struggle not to let Billy notice, snuggling closer to him.
You're more than happy when morning finally comes. The house is so damn loud, and breakfast in a mess. You like it though, the craziness distracting you from yesterday's events. The rest of the party is here by nine, thanks to the urgency of the matter. And then, after everyone is fed up and the dishes are clean, which took half an hour since nobody wanted to do it, everyone sits in the living room to talk.
And you just can't seem to keep up with it. The boys speak fast, Hopper yells, Joyce tries to calm him down, he argues with Eleven, which is like his daughter, you got that, and then he argues with Mike. Nancy and Jonathan always check with each other before saying something, Steve always finds the flaws on the kids' plans, pointing out the many ways it could go wrong, and Dustin often gets into some kind of argument with him. There are a hundred different ways things could go wrong. A thousand ways you could die. Running a hand through your hair, you hold onto Billy's biceps, laying your head on his shoulder. You're the only one who didn't say anything since the conversation started. There's just nothing you can help them with, you'll just stick up to whatever plan they have.
What they know for sure that these Demodogs are here because some of them must have been left behind in some kind of incubation period until it started growing again.
“So that's it. Hunt and destroy.” Lucas says, nodding to himself.
“Yes. We don't know exactly how much time we have until they start going full Demogorgon, so we should start acting now.” Mike states. “Immediately.”
As if something was lit up, everyone starts moving. “My place in one hour, everyone,” Hopper says and suddenly the crowd disperses, the house once again silent.
You're still in the same place you were, on the couch, legs crossed, eyes on the floor. “Hey. You ok?”
“Yeah.” Taking a deep breath, you stand up. “So. Hopper's place. One hour.” Saying this more to yourself than to him, you get up and pace around the living room. “Should we take the baseball bat?”
“Steve has one far more fun than that. You'll like it.” You can tell Billy is keeping his voice nice and soft, trying not to push you over the edge with everything that's going on. “(Y/N), you don't have to go. You know that, right?”
“I do. But I'm going anyway.” Walking over him, you tiptoe to place a kiss on his lips. “Those kids are so brave. I don't want them to think I'm the weak link.”
“Alright, but we stick together. No exceptions.”
“I agree.” It does make you feel a lot better.
In the next hour, you and Billy shower and get ready. You make sure to wear short jeans and a light shirt so you won't feel too hot. The plan is trying to find the Demodog's nest. This part has to be made during the daylight, to make sure no attacks will happen, so you have no choice but to walk around the woods under the sun. Billy makes sure to shove a lot of water on his backpack, using literally every bottle he found in the house. And Max gathers some snacks for the day.
You reach Hopper's place at the same time Nancy, Jonathan, and Mike does, realizing it's also Joyce's place. The party is gathered in front of the house, a big map of Hawking on the ground. Beside it, a pile of some random stuff that you guess will be the... Weapons you'll use. Just in case.
Hopper is the one to assign everyone a place to start, the area they'll have to cover, and where they'll have to stop. There are lines drawn over the map, and you hope Billy has everything memorized because you don't even know where is where. Then, the groups are separated. Billy of course says he'll take you and Max. And Lucas, much to his dismay, will come along too. When people start taking stuff from the pile, you immediately get what Billy mentioned earlier. There's a baseball bat with nails on the top. Smiling, you take it.
“That's so badass.” You mutter, looking at Billy. “This will be my weapon of choice.”
“Hey. That's mine.” Steve exclaims, reaching out his hand.
“Not anymore, buddy.” You sass at him, swinging the bar and hitting the air.
“But–”
“She's good with the bat, trust me,” Maxine says and you nod. Some people have an interrogation on their faces, and Steve keeps staring at the three of you, as if waiting for further explanation.
“We have an inside joke.” Lowering the bat, you turn to look at Billy.
“Restricted to the Hargrove family,” Billy states, taking one the radios from the pile and starting the make his way to the car. “And Max.”
“But what about me?” You feel a little set aside by his affirmation, wondering what he meant. It's impossible that he's ignoring the fact that you were there that day. “I'm in the joke too.” Whining a little on purpose, you follow him.
“You still only notice half of things.” Billy winks at you as he gets inside the car, and after Max and Lucas get in the back seat, you get in as well. “I know you know what I meant.”
“Maybe I didn't.” Billy has this way with you. You were expecting the first sensations to fade, but they didn't. He still makes you nervous, the butterflies on your stomach doesn't seem to grow immune to him. And part of you is still scared of the things you think he means. You did got what he said, but it's safer to just pretend you didn't, right?
The short drive is filled with chattering. The kind of chattering you didn't want to hear since it's all about the Demothings. You stop by the woods, and Max and Lucas will be the ones responsible for the map since they have a compass.
And so the ‘hunting’ starts. You're glad it's not a real hunt though. You remember when you invited Billy for a trail with your friends, but walking through the woods feels different now. Before, you had only the normal wild animals to worry about, not some monsters that came out of the gates of hell. But you try to keep in mind that the sunlight means protection, so you'll safe. For now.
“Billy, can you make sure we'll have enough daylight to make the way back to the car?” You ask him, putting your hair up on a ponytail.
“I will, don't worry.” He moves closer, taking your hand in his. “We'll be ok. Just focus on trying to find anything unusual in the woods.”
“Sure.”
Billy doesn't let go of your hand until you stop to eat something. Lucas and Max start arguing a lot when you resume your walking, complaining about the directions. Billy is clearly pissed, not very fond of the idea of his little sister dating. It's cute the way he keeps staring at the young couple, paying attention to whatever they're saying. You wonder if Billy ever thought about having kids.
Wait. What the hell? Step back, you tell yourself. Too soon for that.
At some point, a fresh breeze starts blowing, and you couldn't be more thankful for it. Letting your hair down, you run a hand through it out of nervousness.
“I'm telling you, we have to go West now,” Lucas says.
“Yes. First West then North.” Maxine takes the map from his hands, taking a look at it. “It's obvious if you think about it. Just look. Try using your head for a moment.”
“Are you calling me dumb?”
“Yes!”
“Alright, both of you.” Billy intervenes, his voice with a tiny hint of anger. “Will you two make a goddman decision or will I have to?”
This will be interesting. Billy and you have been walking a couple of feet behind them, so as he moves ahead, you stand there, crossing your arms. The breeze brings a soft sound, that looks like the sound the pools make when it's windy. Following it, you spot water, only about ten feet away. Leaving the guys behind to their fights, you make your way there, making sure there are no big trees hiding you from their sight. When you get there, you bend down, putting one hand on the freshwater.
“(Y/N)!” It's Billy's usual yell, the one he always uses to scare the shit out of you. “Do you want to give me a heart attack?” When you turn around to look at him, he's already close by, Maxine and Lucas coming right after.
“Sorry, but I found this lake.”
“Lover's lake,” Max says, sitting down on a rock, eyes on the map.
“Lover's lake?” You repeat, crossing your arms and looking at Billy. “Why haven't you ever brought me here?” By the name, you think it would be a nice romantic date. And you remember by what you saw on the map, the lake is shaped like a heart, the reason for the name.
“Oh, you're new here. Sometimes it slips my mind.” He puts he bag down, safely away from where the small ripples reach. “People usually come here to... You know. So I thought that if I brought you and then you found out what really happens here you'd come to the wrong conclusion about my feelings for you.”
That's a very good explanation. And it makes you feel... Special. Different. “Thank you, then. For... Having this in mind.” As you speak, you take off your white shoes, all dusted by now.
“What are you doing?” He asks, an eyebrow raised when you look up at him, using his arm for balance to take off the other shoe.
“I'm using the Lover's Lake to something else than making out.” You start walking backwards, into the water.
“Whoa, look at what (Y/N)'s doing,” Lucas says, and you give them a glance. Max giggles, putting the map down.
“Try to drown Billy, would you?”
“I'll do my best.” When you stare back at Billy, he's already in the water.
You move back until your feet stop touching the bottom, so you start swimming further away. The freshwater is a blessing, washing the hot day from your skin. For a moment, you decide to leave the worries behind, just for a couple of minutes. Billy is quick to reach you, and you're suddenly aware of the kids staring. “We have an audience, keep that in mind.” You tell him when he pulls you close, strong arms encircling your waist.
“Were you ever kissed underwater?”
“No.” Your smirk matches his as you take a deep breath and push yourself down.
The kiss is a mess. You have to focus on holding your breath through the process, what makes you laugh, throwing bubbles on Billy's face. You manage to reach the bottom, your back hitting the rocks as Billy floats on top of you. But eventually, the oxygen you were saving is over, so you push him away and swim back up, laughing when you reach the surface.
“What a chaos.” You burst out when he comes back up as well. “We suck at underwater kisses.”
“I think I swallowed some water,” Billy says, coughing a little.
It only makes you laugh harder, removing the hair glued to your face. Swimming closer to him, you wrap your arms around his neck.
“Hey! Mr. and Mrs. Hargrove! Let's get moving!” Lucas shouts, making you roll your eyes.
You burst into laugh again when Billy flings you over his back, carrying you back to land.
And the walking restarts, with Max and Lucas constantly arguing and Billy trying to make them stop. The good thing is that it distracts you. And the bad part is that it distracts you from searching around for any signs of a Demothing nest. Your eyes scan through the woods, among the trees, looking for–.
“Holy shit!” Lucas exclaims and then he jolts away, running, followed by Max. You and Billy exchange a look before rushing after them.
Before you can ask what was that, you see it. A huge hole on the solid ground. It would fit a car in it. The thing goes down, in a slope, and then it keeps going until it makes a turn left. It's clear it doesn't belong to any kind of wild animal. It's not natural. A low, guttural low snarl reaches your ears, and you involuntary gives step back.
“Call them. Them then we found it.” Lucas says, taking a pencil and making a mark on the map.
The moment Max takes the small radio, you hear static. “Everyone listen up.” Steve says, more voices talking behind him. “We found it. A freaking hole in the ground. It has to be–”
“That's it.” Eleven's voice cuts him off. “We found it too.”
It was supposed to be just one.
“What?” Steve asks.
“Head back now. Everyone.” Hopper says and Max turns the radio off.
This is far worse than you thought.

And He Walks With Flames (Dabi x Reader) - Part One
Tumblr media
They say humans, in a strange, ironic twist of fate, owe their magic to demons. A thousand years ago, they walked the earth, wreaking destruction and chaos wherever they tread. Humans were no more than meat for the slaughter, or glorified playthings for their amusement. The first generation of humans to fight back against their monstrous oppressors did so by a peculiar, ancient magic. A power that could repel demons and bring hope to all humanity. A terrible war raged for the fate of the world and the humans managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The demons were banished to their land of origin, sealed away in defeat. But seals don't last forever. While historians argue on how literal these legends may be, there is no denying that ancient creature have begun to stir, appearing in our world again with growing frequency. And soon there might- The last paragraph was torn away. "Oh, for god's sake," you tsk. Sunlight pours through the large, high window of your lecture room, dust motes dancing in the golden rays. Though you were engrossed in your book, once you look up, the spell is broken, and the clear sky outside once again has your eyes wandering to it. It seems that you are not the only one getting distracted, either - even the professor keeps tapering off at the promise of an afternoon outside in the gorgeous spring weather. "Well," the professor says, shuffling the papers in front of her. "That's all for today. Please revise over the material and we'll discuss it in further detail next time. You are all free to go." You're only too happy to comply, putting your things away and scrambling to your feet. Everyone else is hurrying to get outside, pouring down the stairs to the doors, chattering to one another as they go. Normally you love going to lectures, but it's just too nice outside to be cooped up indoors. You push open the doors and step outside, a muted sigh of pleasure leaving your mouth. Your university, the Royal Academy of Magic, has the reputation for being tough, but so far, you've been enjoying the work. Learning about the different faces of magic, its uses, and the history of it, it's all so very fascinating to you. You've been able to use magic since you were young, but it's studying it here that will really help you unlock your true potential, and hopefully give you a concrete idea of what to aim for with your career. So far there are so many options a magic-user might do that it's been a little overwhelming trying to decide. As you cross the lawns, grass crunching beneath your feet, you decide to swing by your dorm first to drop off your books - they may contain a lot of knowledge, but damn if they're not heavy - your mother pointed out that you've developed something of a slouch since you started studying here. "I'm back!" you call as you push open the door of your dormitory. "Huh?" Kendou looks up from her bed, where she has a couple of books sprawled out next to her head, notes scribbled in the margins of her notebook as she looks over her textbook. Her red hair spills down her shoulder, coming loose from its signature ponytail. "You're back early!" "Yeah, they let us out sooner than I expected," you reply with a shrug and a small laugh, dropping your bag on your own bed and stretching, wincing as a kink in your shoulder pops. "Oh, well, that's good timing, someone came by earlier with a message for you," Kendou says, pushing herself up into a sitting position, apparently deciding your arrival is a good a reason as any to take a break from studying. "Your mother wants you to go down to the Imperial Research Centre to get your father." "Did she come by here?" you ask in surprise. Normally your mother arranges to meet you after lectures or seminars if she wants to see you during the week, and she's a rather busy woman besides. "No, she left a message at the front desk and someone passed it along," Kendou shrugs. "But she also said you guys are doing something tonight, right?" "Oh, yes, I'd forgotten all about that!" you say, feeling silly that it could
possibly have slipped your mind - you love it when you get to go out for a meal with your parents and often it means one of them has some exciting news to share. "Thanks, Kendou, I'll head over there now." She grins and gives a little wave. “No problem!” You suppose it's fortunate that the Imperial Research Centre is only a short walk from the campus and that you're very familiar with the place, since your father's been working there for so long. Anyway, it's a pleasant walk, the way there is lined with rows of trees that are only a week or two away from growing from dark to light pink and shedding their blossoms. When the street is in full bloom, it's like there's been a wedding. You even find yourself humming as you walk, breathing in the subtle smell of flowers on the breeze, wondering to yourself if the blossom trees were planted before or after the buildings were founded, but either way, whoever was responsible for them made a good call. The Imperial Research Centre is a peculiar building, made of blue stone and with a roof that boasts four conical points, one in each corner, making it resemble a castle from bygone days just plopped in the middle of the city. There's an aura of mystery to it, too, hinting at the all-important, life-changing work that’s always going on inside. If ever cutting-edge technology is released to the public, odds were that the Centre had a hand in making it. The building is cooler on the inside than it is outdoors, powered by a system designed to spread cool or warm air throughout the entire building, depending on the system. You approach the front desk, wishing that you'd thought to bring a jacket, because it’s always cold in here during the warm seasons, and the receptionist glances up on you with a slightly dismissive expression on her face. It's probably because she thinks you're an overeager student or some hapless intern, it's very rare a researcher your age would be able to work here. "May I help you?" the receptionist asks in a cool, professional tone. "Yes, I'm here to see my father," you reply. "He's one of the vice executives here." You give his surname, and the woman pauses. Is that a trace of nervousness you can see? "He's downstairs in Containment Room 1A," she says, checking a sheet of paper on the desk, which is littered with various papers, random pieces of stationary and one of those magitech intercom systems that they use. They have something similar at the Academy too, though of course, the Centre get the most high-tech version of everything. "All right, thanks," you say, turning to head for the elevator. "Wait!" the woman cries out and you glance back, confused. "I'm sorry, but you can't just walk through here, especially to the lower levels! You don't have the clearance and it can be dangerous." You scoff in disbelief. You have visited your father here before, many times, and this has never been a problem for you before. You always just tell them who you are and then get a visitor's pass. You even know some of the codes to the doors, thanks to waiting around for your father to finish work so often. "Well, please can you have someone go fetch him for me?" you ask, going to reluctantly perching on one of the chairs in the waiting area. "Can't it wait?" the receptionist asks impatiently, and maybe it can, but her attitude is starting to piss you off, so you shoot her a frosty smile you've perfected after watching your mother pull a similar face at people who don't meet her standards. "No, it can't." The woman sighs but she dutifully presses a button on the intercom system and speaks quietly into it for a moment or two, while you idly pick at a loose thread on the chair you're sitting on. She then glances back at you, eyebrows raised. "A messenger has been sent down to speak to him. Hopefully he should be upstairs shortly." "Thank you so much." you reply sweetly, the last words with heavy emphasis. After that, the two of you sit in a mutually frosty silence, with the woman sorting through paperwork on her desk and occasionally
directing people who approach her desk to the correct floor (which seems redundant to you - why can't people just read the clearly printed sign on the wall next to her desk ?), while you flick through some glossy magazines without actually taking in a single word. But you're not leaving until you've spoken to your father. Minutes tick by and you start drumming your heel lightly on the floor, leg jiggling with impatience. You wonder if the woman just lied about sending a messenger down to the Containment Room in an effort to pacify you, in the hopes you'll just get bored and leave. You grit your jaw at the thought, ignoring how cold you're getting, sitting here doing nothing. After maybe ten minutes, a man in a lab coat approaches the front desk, leaning over to speak to the woman. "Kino, could you come with me a moment? Hannah can start her shift." "Oh, I'll be right there!" Kino says, flustered, getting out from behind the desk and following the man as he walks briskly down the corridor, without a backwards glance at you. No doubt her replacement will be along any moment - perhaps she's running late? But you don't plan on sticking around. As soon as the receptionist rounds the corner, out of sight, you spring up and walk briskly across the room to the elevators, stabbing the button and stepping through the doors. You don't bother to fight the smile that spreads across your face as the doors slide shut. ~ "Father?" There's always something slightly creepy about the lower floors. The orbs lining the walls that are designed to keep the machinery running in case of a power shortage cast an eerie glow in the corridors, washing everything with a pale blue light that makes it seem far colder than it actually is. It reminds you a bit of walking through a tunnel of ice. Your boots click on the stone floor as you follow the lights to Containment Room A1. Finally, you reach the double doors leading inside, flanked by two windows each side. You can see your father inside, his back to you, so you rap on the windows. Nothing. You try again with more force, hurting your knuckles, but he still doesn't turn around. Perhaps it's soundproofed, so whatever's out here can't disturb whatever's going on in there? You glance at the keypad next to the doors, but you've never been to this particular room before so the code for the doors on the upper level is unlikely to be the same one for down here. Then you see movement, shadows beneath the crack between door and floor, and the doors slide open with a mechanical swish and two scientists in lab coats come out, comparing notes and murmuring together excitedly. You slip inside before they can slam shut again, unwilling to stand outside in the chilly corridor for any longer than necessary. "Father!" you call out as you enter. But then you stop dead in your tracks. Ahead of you, trapped behind some kind of containment field...is a monster. "What-?!" you hear your father say in surprise at his daughter suddenly marching through the doors. "What are you doing in here?!" But you don't answer. You can't look away from what's in front of you, even if you wanted to. You know without being told that this is a demon, but it's certainly not what they looked like in any of your history books. A tall, humanoid being that is undoubtedly male and you can tell from where you’re standing that he’s tall. The demon's huge, black wings arch out from behind him, reminding you of a bat. Two horns jut out from a crown of spiky black hair, but aside from that, you're surprised by how… human he looks. Your cheeks warm up as you notice he is shirtless, peculiar burn marks covering over half of his body and seemingly crudely stitched together like a patchwork doll. Despite that, he's impressively sculpted, sinewy muscles on full display and you know that demons were said to be uncommonly strong. Your eyes drift further down, and you spot a whiplike tail wrapped around one leg, topped with a pointed barb at the end, like a club in a game of cards. His arms are in restraints and so are his
ankles, yet he doesn't seem stressed in any way, leaning against the back wall of his holding cell as though he's waiting for something. "What...is this?" you breathe out, finally turning to your father. "This is our latest research subject," your father replies beside you, also staring at the demon, though his expression is surprisingly somber, considering just how amazing it is that they have been able to capture and contain a demon. You've never seen a live demon before, and something tells you that the one before you certainly isn't any garden variety one. "Director Fuji is very excited about this. It's not every day you see a demon this high ranking." Slowly, the demon stirs, raising his head a little. You're perfectly safe outside the containment field, as well was the multiple other safety measures both inside the cell and out of it, yet the sensation of being watched makes your flesh break out in goosebumps. From beneath spiky fronds of hair, the demon's eyes - so blue they almost don't look real - stare right at you, his gaze alone rooting you to the spot, laying all your defenses bare and leaving you feeling bizarrely naked before that look. Watching you without once blinking or breaking his gaze, his lips part in a sneer to reveal two rows of teeth, the fangs sharp and white as an icicle. You find yourself holding your breath as your father speaks again. "Sweetheart, meet Dabi."

Over Time
Tumblr media
Commissioned by: @my-loves-18
Pairing: Shownu x Reader
Warning: Mentions of Violence, Angst, Smut
Word Count: 3.8k
"You're just jealous." Your best friend, Steph chuckles, nodding her head towards Shownu with his arm wrapped around a girl.
"Jealous of what exactly?" You scoff while rolling your eyes.
"Hey, Y/N." Shownu yelled from across the lawn. Despite you hating him and your assumed dislike he had for you, he still tried to get under your skin. Well not tried, succeeded. He enraged you, not made you jealous.
Pfft.
You may be a lot of things, but jealous was not one of them.
"You have to make a comment everytime you see him with a girl, or just see him in general, Y/N, and with me dating Wonho we're around him alot." She says.
You know she's right, but it's not like you dislike him for no reason. You had two, and to you they were very valid.
The first one, you hated the way he treated women. Every party you went to, his arm was wrapped around a new girl every time, when you'd see him out, he was with a new one. You'd heard plenty of girls crying in the bathroom after just seeing them together, and it wasn't hard for you to put two and two together. He was a typical frat guy, who did the typical frat guy thing of sleeping with a ton of girls and throwing them out after he was done with them. You didn't care if he slept with thousands, just treat them better.
The second thing that made you really despise him, was the fact that he dropped a beer on you at your first frat party of your Sophmore year and laughed while high-fiving his friends, leaving you completely embarrassed.
"Whatever, I'm not jealous. I have class." You say, giving her a small wave before walking away.
It was the first day of your junior year and you wanted this one to be the best one yet, since you knew next year was going to be your last.
You walk into your math class, scoping out the people you would be with for the next few months, when one person in particular caught your eye.
Kim Namjoon.
You had seen him around campus last year, and the immediate attraction you had felt for this man was powerful. He crossed your mind off and on all throughout the summer and you made a vow that you would talk to him if he was ever in one of your classes.
Taking a deep breath, you walk over to where he was sitting and clear your throat.
"This seat taken?" You ask Namjoon, sliding in beside him before he can even answer.
"No." He coughs, clearing his throat, and goes ahead. "Hi, I'm Namjoon." He says, holding his hand out for you to shake.
Oh you know.
"Y/N." You smile, excited to see what this year brings.
**
Over the next few days, you and Namjoon are unable to stop talking to each other. Your heart skips a beat everytime you see him, the butterflies in your stomach act up whenever you even think about him.
Was this love? Is this what it felt like? Because if it was, you were here for it.
However, everytime you interacted with Namjoon in any way, you felt like someone was staring at you, as if someone was burning holes in your back. Finally after a week, you got tired of it, turning around to see who had an issue.
Shownu sat there with his arms crossed, eyes staring right at you and Namjoon. You could see Namjoons face become frightened as he quickly looked away from Shownu, looking almost guilty.
"God that guy." You mumble, feeling annoyed.
"You know him?" Namjoon asks, avoiding eye contact.
"Kinda. Same friend group. My best friend is dating his best friend." You say.
"So you're not close with him?" Namjoon asks, looking relieved. You shake your head no, which makes Namjoon smile but for some reason, this smile felt different. It was cold and creepy, but you shrugged it off, not thinking too much into it.
Later that evening, you sat inside the frat house, gushing about your week with Namjoon to Sarah when Wonho and Shownu walked in the room.
"Kim Namjoon?" Wonho asked, sitting beside Sarah, wrapping his arm around her.
"The one and only." You chuckle.
"Careful with him. We've heard things." Shownu says, plopping down on the couch opposite of you.
"Pfft. What things?" You scoff, not believing him.
"His last girlfriend went missing, Y/N." Shownu says. "Just be careful." He finishes, standing up and walking towards the front door.
Your stomach dropped.
Was it true?
On Friday you woke up grumpy as all hell. Shuffling your feet down the hall, you enter the kitchen where Sarah stands, drinking a cup of coffee while you yawn largely.
"Late night?" She asks, pouring you a cup of coffee.
"Yeah, I don't know. What Shownu said to me was playing through my head, but I don't know if I believe him." You tell her.
"Just be careful. I don't have a good feeling." She tells you, with a sympathetic smile.
**
That weekend you spent your days not doing homework, no, you spent your time googling everything you could find related to Namjoon and his previous girlfriend and what you came up with was astonishing.
Nothing. You found nothing that linked Namjoon to any type of disappearance. You read about a young girl going missing, but Namjoons name was nowhere to be found. That was when you decided to not take anything Shownu had to say seriously. Clearly he enjoyed just fucking with you and making you panic.
**
Saturday night you went back to the frat house for a party, hoping to see Namjoon there, along with hoping that maybe, just maybe Shownu would sit this one out but to your luck, he didn't.
The moment you walked in, you felt a pair of eyes on you. Looking around you see Namjoon staring at you. You smile at him, walking towards him but something stops you, another pair of eyes, burning into your skin. Looking up you see Shownu staring at you, his eyes going in between you and Namjoon. He shakes his head no to you, telling you not to go over there. You roll your eyes, walking to Namjoon anyways. You didn't understand what Shownu's deal with you was. He only likes to crack jokes at your expense and taunt you, why was he acting like this now that you were interested in someone?
Sarah had told you it was because he was into you, but you couldn't believe that. There were no signs, he was always mean to you. Plus you did not like him at all. She was delusional, right?
"Y/N. Can I talk to you?" You hear from behind you. Shownu standing there, looking worried.
"No Shownu. Butt out." You sigh, walking away.
You ignored the nagging feeling in your stomach as you walked towards Namjoons extended hand, ready to see where the night took you.
**
Monday morning you walked into your classroom, a smile on your face that you could not shake. Your night with Namjoon had gone perfectly. The two of you had gone for a walk before going to get some ice cream and then sat at a 24 hour Cafe and just talked. You talked about everything, family,  friends, school, life. It was perfect and you were falling hard.
"Are you okay?" You hear, making you come out of your happy bubble.
"I'm fine why?" You ask, looking at Shownu with a blank stare.
"Just checking. Sorry." He mumbles, walking back to his seat as Namjoon glares at him, sitting beside you.
**
Over the next few weeks, your high of going out with Namjoon began to quickly dwindle into becoming scared of him. If you didn't call him back within two minutes he got very angry.
"Hey , sorry I was talking to Sarah." You laugh, the phone against your ear.
"Yeah sure. Probably fucking someone else like a whore." Namjoon spit.
"What? No, I was literally talking to Sarah." You whisper.
"Yeah, you better have been." He snaps before hanging up.
If you ignored him, he showed up at your apartment.
Sunday night you heard a frantic knock at your door.
Knock
Knock
Knock
"Open up Y/N! I know your home!" He yelled through the door. You quickly unlocked the front door, Namjoon pushing his way inside. "Why are you ignoring me!" He yells. "Who's here!? Where is he? I heard shuffling. You're probably hiding him in the bathroom, aren't you?" He yells, storming to the bathroom.
"Im studying!" You say, pointing to your books scattered across the floor. "This is too much." You sigh. He apologizes after looking in the bathroom, the crazy in his eyes still lingering.
The two of you weren't even dating yet and he was very controlling and possessive and you didn't want it.
On Monday you sat at the opposite end of the classroom, away from Namjoon. You could feel his eyes burning into your skin. You turned around and saw Shownu staring at him, making sure he knew he was watching.
"Why didn't you sit with me?" Namjoon asked, grabbing your hand as you exited the room, pulling you to a corner.
"Look, I don't want to see you anymore. I'm done. Leave me alone." You say, walking away and feeling relieved.
With your head down, you continue walking down the hall, accidentally bumping into someone on your way. "I'm so sorry." You say, looking up to see Shownu standing there.
"No worries5." He smiles at you, making you smile.
"Look.. I'm sorry I've been butting in with you and Namjoon. The dudes just not right." Shownu expresses.
"I know. And I'm sorry for not believing you.. I told him I didn't want to see him anymore. He's scaring me." You tell him.
You're not sure why you were telling this to Shownu. Maybe it was the fact that he had been so nice to you, so concerned about you. You weren't sure.
"I'm glad you're okay." He says.
"I still don't like you." You mumble, beginning to walk away.
"Woah, woah, what did I ever do to you?" He asks.
"Seriously? The beer poured all over me?" You scoff. He laughs.
"That was an accident." He says. "It wasn't meant for you specifically, you just happened to be under there." He clarifies.
"Well I don't like the way you treat your conquests." You say, crossing your arms.
"My conquests?" He asks with a laugh.
"The girls you sleep with and the dump." You explain.
"Which girls are those? Because I haven't gotten laid in like 6 months." He laughs.
"Then why are you always with a different girl? Why are some of them crying after being alone with you?" You ask, crossing your arms.
"I do have friends that are girls. And when they're crying, it's usually because they're having issues with their own boyfriends." He chuckles. "Contrary to popular belief, I don't just fuck anything with two legs and a vagina." He tells you. "I only sleep with someone if I like them." He finishes, giving you a small wink before walking away.
Had you really been wrong about him this entire time? Hating hkm for something he wasn't even doing instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt. Honestly you felt a little shitty for the way that you had treated him all the time and assumed how he was acting.
Walking to your apartment, you don't feel the gaze of Namjoom on you, as he follows you, making sure you're heading there alone.
As you walk down the street, you can faintly hear the sound of footsteps behind you. You try to peek over your shoulder to see who's there, but you can't see anyone, only your shadow from the dimly lit street lights. Your stomach is in knots as you pick up your pace, just wanting to get home and feel safe.
You round the corner of your apartment, bolting up the stairs as fast as you can, noticing a figure behind you catching up. Your hands shake as you find the key and slide it into the lock, hoping you can make it before he reaches you.
You knew it was Namjoon. You knew he was pissed you wanted to end things, and he knew you were scared of him and he decided to use this to his advantage, knowing when you get scared, you get clumsy.
"Hi baby." He whispers in your ear, covering your mouth with his hand and pushing open the door to your apartment.
You were so close.
That evening Sarah had messaged you reminding you she would be out of town for the week with Wonho, visiting family.
"I remembered. But judging by the look on your face you forgot and hoped she would be home tonight. Sorry baby." Namjoon whispers, stroking your cheek. "So beautiful."
**
Wednesday.
[7:29pm] Hey Shownu, it's Sarah. Can you check on Y/N? It's been a few days and she hasn't responded to me. I'm worried.
[7:31pm] I'm on my way.
**
Shownu arrives at your apartment, his hand up ready to bang on the door, when he hears a voice. Pressing his ear to the door, quietly, he immediately recognizes the faint voice of Namjoon. You try to reply but he can only hear mumbles. You couldbt be tied up.. could you?
Shownu juggles back and forth for a minute, deciding what to do, and ultimately he decides to go for the safest bet. He walks away from your door, pulling out his phone to call his cousin, who just happens to be a cop.
"Hey Seo-Joon, it's Shownu. Look, I might be overreacting but…" he goes on to explain the situation and how he thinks you're being held against your will.
"Don't worry, we're on our way. Hang tight." Seo-Joon says, reassuring him.
A few minutes later, Seo-Joon, along with five other officers walk up the stairs, joining Shownu as he points to which apartment is yours.
The police count down before they break down the door, three men rushing in to tackle an unsuspecting Namjoon, who swore up and down everything was consensual, while you barely sat in a chair, rope burns around your wrist and ankles and torso, showing that you had been trying to escape, your body limp and bruise.
Shownu rushes towards you, untying you and holding you until the ambulance comes, riding with you to the hospital and not leaving your side for a minute.
Sarah and Wonho came home as soon as they could, Sarah feeling so guilty about leaving you, even though no one could have truly predicted this.
Namjoon had been arrested and was awaiting trial as you healed from the terrible experience. You were assured you would never have to see him again, as he was now also being looked at for the disappearance of his previous girlfriend.
As time went on, you and Shownu slowly became closer. He visited you at the hospital often, then when you were home, he practically lived in your apartment.
When you got better and started going out, he was always around you, if not beside you, he was close enough that if you needed him, you could call and he would hear you.
The second frat party you attended is where he kissed you for the first time.
You had excused yourself from the dance floor, feeling flushed and a little thirsty, you made your way to the kitchen for a drink. Shiwnu came in behind you asking you if you were okay and if you needed anything. You were leaning against the wall when he walked over to you, his body just barely pressing against yours.
"W-what are you doing?" You ask, your throat suddenly dry.
"Can i see something?" He asks. You nod your head yes, and he leans in for a kiss.
You melted.
He pulled away, smiled and walked away.
Oh boy.
The next week, neither of you talked about what happened at the last party. However, that weekend you found yourself pinned against a wall, your legs wrapped around his waist as he aggressively slid his tongue into your mouth.
Shownu pulls himself away, letting you slowly slide down his body until you're level on the ground.
"Fuck." He groans, giving you a smile and a wink before walking back to the party. You were definitely starting to like him.
You had tried to ask him about it on Tuesday in class, and he told you to "just let it flow."
You weren't sure what he meant, so you left it alone and went on with your week.
That next weekend as you walked into the frat house, your body instinctively moved toward Shownu, but you decided you wanted a drink first. You smiled as tiu stared at the wall that just last weekend he had you pressed against.
"Whatcha smiling at?" Sarah asks, walking behind you to pour herself a beer.
"Ahh, nothing." You nervously chuckle. You knew she'd be happy for you, but honestly you didn't even know what the two of you were, if anything so why get excited over nothing?
You and Sarah took a few shots, getting nice and tipsy before heading to the dance floor. You were feeling a little sad you still hadn't seen Shownu. The song changed as the two of you walked over there. You began rolling your hips to the beat, your eyes finally meeting Shownu's. He lickdd his lips as he watched you dance, shaking your hips and ass, keeping eye contact with him.
When the song finished, you tried to get yourself another drink, but instead of making it to the kitchen, you found yourself being dragged up the stairs by Shownu.
He pulled you into the bathroom, closing and locking the door behind you.
"Can I help…" you began before being cut off by his lips.
"You are so sexy." He groans, his lips never leaving yours. He pushes himself against you, letting you feel his hard cock through his jeans.
"I want you." You moan, moving yourself so he will pick you up.
You wrap your legs around him as he moves you to the bathroom counter, sitting you down, never breaking the kiss, grinding his cock into your already wet clothes pussy.
Shownu parts your legs as he pulls your ass closer to the edge of the counter, gripping his large hands tightly to your thighs.
He drops to his knees, pulling down your panties licks, with your help. You both were thanking you for wearing a skirt tonight. Shownu places your legs over his shoulders, leaning you back to get better access. Bending down, he llicks a strip up your already sopping cunt,  causing shivers to trickle down your spine.
“Fuck” you groan as he latches his luscious lips to your clit, sucking harshly.
You move your hands to his head, gripping a fist of his hair as he flicks his tongue against your clit, while you grind your self in his mouth.
Shownu reaches his hand up, slipping under your shirt, cupping your breast before pinching your nipple, rolling it in between his fingers.
“Just like that” you cry out. "Fuck." You grunt your orgasm building.
Shownu flicks his tongue faster, switching between using his licking and sucking.
Your grip on him tightens as your orgasm comes closer, a few more long licks and you’re sent over the edge, letting out a string of cries and curses words as your body shudders, harshly grinding yourself against his face.
Shownu pulls away from you, licking his lips with a smile on his face.
You push him back, sliding off the counter before dropping to your knees.
Reaching up you unbutton his pants, yanking them down, along with his boxers, allowing his cock to spring free.
Your mouth waters as you stare at his large, thick cock, his red tip dripping with pre cum. You wrap your hand around his large shift before taking his tip in your mouth, sucking harshly, lapping up the cum.
"Damn baby." He groans, throwing his head back. You begin taking in as much of him as you can, moving your hand from in the way.
You gag on his cock as you deep throat Him, making him hiss in pleasure.
Taking him from deep in your throat, you twirl your tongue around his tip while pumping him at the same time.
"Holy fuck." He moans, not wanting you to stop. "If you wanna fuck, you're gonna have to stop." He cries.
You halt your movements, taking him from your mouth, before standing up and bending over the bathroom counter.
"Fuck me." You cry, shaking your ass for him.
You can hear Shownu groan as he watches you stand there, bent over, waiting for his cock.
"Gladly." He growls, lining himself up with your entrance before pushing himself inside you.
"Your cunt feels so good." He moans, thrusting in and out of you. Your hands grip the counter tightly, your fingertips turning white.
"Harder." You cry. Shownu pounds his cock inside of you, the sound of skin snapping fills the bathroom.
There's a knock at the door that shocks ykh both, but Shownu yells for them to fuck off, his orgasm building.
You rub your clit, your second orgasm coming on quicker than your first, taking no time to wash through your body, making you cry out.
"Shit im gonna cum." Shownu grunts, pulling himself out of you before pumping his cock to cum all over your back. "Fuck I'm sorry." He says, making you chuckle.
"Just loan me one of your shirts." You smile.
"Now that I can do." He says, grabbing your hand to take you to his room.
Later that week Shownu asked you to be his girlfriend, which you happily accepted. He had told you, he knew that over time you'd come around to be with him. And he was right.
**
It had been a few months and you had never been happier. You and Shownu were still going strong, and Namjoon was being held in prison. Life was actually really good, it felt like nothing could bring the tso of you down.
"Hello?" Shownu says, answering his phone. His face goes confused, putting his phone on speaker.
"Y/N." You hear, it's Seo-Joon.
"Oh, hi." You giggle.
"Look.. i don't know how to tell you this but Namjoon was released. The judge decided there wasn't enough evidence." He sighs.
Your body begins to tremble at the thought of Namjoon roaming the streets again. Just as you feel like you're about to cry, there's a knock at your door, and your stomach drops.

One of the good things that has to be Bishop's daughter is that Taza spoils you whenever. This time, he has let you destroy a car of the scrapping, feeling how stressed you have been for the last few days. While another party is happening in the clubhouse, Leti and Gabriela accompany you through the main alley, to the farthest part of the scrap. Carrying a baseball bat in your right hand, you find an old SUV perfectly parked and ready for you. Wearing a pair of glasses and covering your hands with big gloves, the show starts while the girls drink beer and listen to your misery.
“I fucking hate him!” You scream full of rage, hitting the pilot window.
It crashes into small pieces falling to gravel on the floor. Turning at them, you raise both arms at both sides of your body.
“Can you really fucking believe it? He fucking came to me! To ask me for advice to date that… fucking bitch!” This time, you smash the rearview mirror with all your strength, beating it until it's unfixable. “I'm in front of you, man! What the fuck is wrong with you? How you didn't fucking notice my feelings?!”
You're breathing fast, hitting the pilot door several times, drawing a big dent on it. They agree with you. Everybody in the crowded yard knows about the fact that you love him, and not because you said so. But because it is obvious. Turning to the hood of the car, you grab the bat with both hands to slam it into the windshield, using all the rage running through your veins.
“Good luck catching a STD, you fucking asshole!”
Pulling back the bat, you take off the whole glass, throwing it onto the floor to jump over it repeatedly.
“I don't give a fuck about your feelings, or about your fucking love! I don't want to be your fucking friend anymore!”
The headlights explode into thousands of small pieces too with two loud roars.
“FUCK YOU, MICHAEL ARiza…” Your voice gets low as soon as you turn around again, to find him some steps away from you.
The girls turn confused too, until they see him keeping his hands in his pockets. Leti and Gabriela run away without saying a single world, in the meantime that you take off the glasses covering your eyes. Tossing down the bat, you heavily gulp. Riz takes a look at the car, before licking his lips slowly. Wanting to say something, but he can't barely breathe.
“It's not what it looks like”. You whisper terrified.
Of course, you couldn't stop being his friend if he doesn't love you back.
“Were you talking with them about what I asked you?” His voice sounds hurt, with a sorrowful gesture on his face. “I… trusted you something… personal and you told them about it?”
“I'm so—sorry, Riz, I di—”. You take a step ahead, interrupting your words, when he takes one backward.
“It's good to see that you don't care about me”.
“Don't say that. It's not true”.
“Then… why is this show about?”
Silence. You are at a crossroads. But every road leads you to lose him.
“I can't… tell you”.
Pursing his lips, he just nods. You don't even know what he has heard, but you're not going to ask him. This just could turn the situation into something worse. But he's leaving you there, alone, and you feel already as if you were dead inside.
“I love you”. You utter without thinking, but he doesn't stop his legs. “I REALLY DO!”
Nothing. You have told him these same words a lot of times, and doesn't have any value for him as you're trying to show him.
“Some… Sometimes…” Having a deep breath, you let yourself go. “SOMETIMES I HEAR YOUR VOICE NOTES WHEN I'M SAD!”
Your lungs are emptied after yelling at him. Your throat is ripped, and it stings a little, but at least he has turned around.
“Shit…” You mumble ashamed, when you see him coming back.
Swallowing your saliva, you place both hands crossed on your chest on the sides of your body, slightly raised up. Some tears falling down, seeing the confused gesture on him.
“I don't know when it happened… I just fell in love with you, Riz… I'm sorry. I tried to push… these feelings away, because I didn't want to lose you. You're my best friend. I can't imagine a day without you”. Confessing it is like taking off all the weight on your shoulders, but stabbing your heart at the same time. “I… I don't know what you have heard, but I don't… really mean that… Of course I care about you, about your feelings… I'm happy because you're happy. And I… I would never leave you just… just because you don't feel the same things I feel”.
Riz is staring at you in silence while you, practically, are putting all your shit over the table. Opening up your chest and showing him your worst fears. What gives you nightmares every single night, since Elisa came to Santo Padre. Hardly sniffing and rubbing your nose with the sleeve cuff of your hoodie, you shrug scared to death. You don't know what else you can say to make him understand why you are so angry.
“So, all those things you said in the Templo… Were you talking about me?” His tone of voice is shaking slightly, raising a hand to highlight the past. You nod.
“Since… some months ago, every time you go for a run, I write you a letter”. Confessing, you grab your phone from your pocket to show them to him, but Michael raises again his hand to stop you.
Being aware that he doesn't want to read them, literally breaks your heart. Not because of all the time you have spent on writing them, but all the things you have written on them; all your feelings, all your memories, all your fears, all the things you love about him. Hoping that, maybe, one day he would read them. Grabbing a fold of your hoodie, you put the phone inside of the pocket again, using your free hand.
“I will understand if you… pull yourself away from me. I don't… want to cause you any trouble wi—”.
“Stop talking, please”. Riz interrupts you shaking his hands raised up some inches away from his chest.
Pressing your lips, you nod in silence again, clearing the tears in your cheeks.
“Why didn't you tell me before?”
“For what, Michael? You and me, this is not gonna happen”. You reply, pointing at the distance between both with your forefingers, feeling how you break a little more. “We ain't made for each other”.
“Is that what you think? Then, why is it supposed that we're friends, if we don't complete the other?”
“Things are very different. It's not the same to be your friend than to be your… girlfriend”.
His phone starts to ring. Saved by the bell. Answering the call, he just listens, not uttering a single word. But when he hangs up, Riz takes a step ahead.
“I got to go, b—”.
“It's okay”. You whisper crossing your arms and bowing down your head for a second. “I didn't mean to hurt you. And I'm sorry for fucking up our friendship”.
“You didn't”.
“You're just saying that because I'm fucked enough tonight, but I will not blame you when you start to act differently with me”.
“Listen, we will be friends forever, no one will change that. And this… conversation it's not finished”.
“Okay”. You reply shrugging listlessly, trying to stop crying, even if you know it's going to be the last time you're going to be alone.
Watching him leave the scrapping is the most hard and painful goodbye you have ever experienced. And you want to run after him. Beg him to not push you away. Ask him to forgive you. But your legs don't receive the orders from your brain, because you know you have already lost him.

꠵ look at me : chapter four ꠵
パニック 。
Tumblr media
"How in the hell did we manage to get in this situation?"
Iwaizumi's and Matsukawa's shared thoughts explained the worst possible situation they would be in : they lost Oikawa and Hanamaki.
"Damn, this is bad." Iwaizumi reached for his phone, dialing Oikawa's number for the seventeenth time. Of course, just like the other sixteen times, there was no answer : the call just went straight to voicemail. "He put his goddamn phone on silent, what the hell was he thinking?"
Matsukawa rubbed Iwaizumi's back, supporting his teammate. "I'm sure they're fine. Maybe they went to get food or something." He checked his own phone to see if Hanamaki had read his texts, but his results were the same as Iwaizumi's. "I got no answer from Makki. He probably turned his phone off as well."
Iwaizumi grabbed his own hair, practically tearing it out of his scalp. "Crap, they're really starting to worry the living shit out of me." Matsukawa snorted a little bit, taking Iwaizumi's hands in his own to force him to stop making himself go bald.
"Look, you need to calm down. If they were in actual danger, the last thing they need is you not thinking straight." Matsukawa flicked Iwaizumi's forehead. "So, just take a deep breath. Breathe with me. In for four, hold for four, and out for four." Iwaizumi matched his breathing with Matsukawa's, and after a couple minutes his mini panic-attack had gone down, and the veins that were popping out of his forehead earlier weren't visible anymore. Muttering a small thanks, he checked his phone again just to see if Oikawa had texted. It was the same as earlier; no answer.
"Hey!" Hanamaki's bright voice rang through both boys' ears. They turned to greet the huge smile plastered on the boy's face. "Sorry about leaving you guys, I got you some food!"
Matsukawa and Iwaizumi both let out a breath they didn't know they were holding. "About time," Matsukawa muttered, opening his arms to give Hanamaki a little hug. "Was 'boutta call the cops on your dumb ass."
Hanamaki scoffed, shoving two paper bags into his friend's arms. "Well, screw you. I even got yours and Iwa's favorite too."
Iwaizumi peaked over Matsukawa's shoulder as the latter opened the crinkled bag. Inside were two foil-wrapped packages, the smell emitting from the wrapping suggesting Hanamaki had bought some food. Iwaizumi reached inside and pulled out one of the packages, opening the foil just a little bit to reveal Matsukawa's favorite food, cheese-filled hamburg steak.
Matsukawa gasped, taking the food from Iwaizumi's hand and looking at it like it was his lifeline. "Makki, you are a literal angel. God bless. I love you." He took a bite out of the steak, closing his eyes and smiling. "No homo though." He added on in between bites, finishing the meat in under fifteen seconds.
He gave the other bag to Iwaizumi, which held little plastic containers with some agedashi tofu. He inhaled the food's scent, wrinkling his nose a little bit at the sudden waft. It smelled normal, but it wasn't like the tofu Oikawa and his okāsan⭒ used to make. Even though Toorū was a brat about making food for Iwaizumi sometimes, he still managed to cook something up that tasted absolutely fantastic. It kind of scared him.
Iwaizumi pulled out the container, popping the lid open and stabbing a toothpick into one of the tofu pieces, popping it into his mouth. "So, where's Crappykawa?"
Hanamaki shrugged. "Dunno. I think he chickened out." An unamused expression made its way onto Makki's face. "He's probably still pissed about Karasuno beating us, that he didn't want to watch them go against Shiratorizawa."
Matsukawa and Iwaizumi both glanced at each other as Hanamaki stalked off, hands in his pockets and everything. "Sometimes, I really wonder what goes on inside his head."
"Honestly." Matsukawa replied, as they both speed-walked to keep up with Hanamaki. "I've been meaning to ask you, how's 'Kawa doing?"
Iwaizumi stiffened a little at the mention of his friend. A thousand things flew through his head. Should he tell him? Would Oikawa get mad? How would Matsukawa take it? Would he call the cops? Would he believe him? Would he tell Makki?
"You know, if you don't want to answer, you don't have to. Just don't glare at me, you're giving me chills." Iwaizumi snapped back to reality at Matsukawa's words, realizing he was glaring daggers at his friend. He mumbled an 'oh, gomen'nasai ⭒ ,' feeling relieved when Mattsun waved it off like it was nothing. "If it's personal, I get it. I'd be pretty 'pressed too, if I was in his situation."
"Hm? What do you mean?"
Matsukawa sighed, looking up towards the cloudy sky. "Well, Oikawa is an amazing captain, and setter. He tried for three years to make it to Nationals at Seijoh, worked his knee into a brace, and his chances were all swiped out from underneath him." Iwaizumi noticed his fist clenched a little bit, but decided not to mention it. "You know, I don't blame him for hating Kageyama. He was just born gifted, while Oikawa worked his ass off to get to where he is right now."
Iwaizumi nodded, remembering Oikawa's semi-hatred for the first-year Karasuno setter. "But, even so, that doesn't explain why he tried hitting him. You remember that, right?"
"Seriously?" Matsukawa turned his head to stare into Iwaizumi's olive-colored eyes. "I mean, sure, but he was having a panic-attack, if the things you told me and Makki were true."
"A panic-attack?" Iwaizumi looked at Matsukawa in shock. "Shittykawa? Having a panic-attack?"
Hanamaki slowed his pace so that he was walking alongside Iwaizumi and Matsukawa. "Yeah. From what you told us, he was breathing really fast and his pupils were small," he pointed to his own eyes while saying this part. "And he was sweating a lot more than he should have been, since he didn't practice all that much yet. Seeing Kageyama probably triggered his flight or fight response, and made him freak out even more."
Iwaizumi's eyebrows furrowed as the facts dawned on him. It all made sense now, why Oikawa had distanced himself so much more from Kageyama than he did before the incident. He'd avoid him at all costs, making sure he never came too close in contact with his underclassman : probably in fear of coming close to hitting him again. What if Kageyama triggered another panic-attack, and Iwaizumi wasn't there to stop him from doing something he'd regret?
Hanamaki looked at Iwaizumi's expression, clapping him on the back. "Oikawa's come a long way since then. That was what, three years ago?" He intertwined his fingers, flipping his hands and holding his palms to the sky. "He's doing a lot better now, and I'm really proud of him." He flashed a bright smile at them, which nearly blinded Iwaizumi and Matsukawa.
"Aw, man. I should've brought sunglasses." Matsukawa muttered, rubbing his eyes. Hanamaki laughed, slinging his arms around the latter's and Iwaizumi's shoulders.
"Let's just find some seats. Maybe we'll find Oikawa!"

Iwaizumi muttered incoherent curse words as he climbed the fourth set of stairs, looking for Oikawa on the right side of the stadium now. "I know he's here. Why the hell is he so hard to find?" He, Hanamaki, and Matsukawa had split up, deciding that it would be easier that way to find the setter quicker and easier if he even decided to watch the match. Iwaizumi was about to give up when he noticed the familiar chestnut-brown tufts of hair that peeked over one of the chairs in the stadium. There he is, Iwaizumi thought, walking up behind his friend.
"Ah. So you're here too."
Oikawa stiffened, turning around abruptly at Iwaizumi's voice, probably expecting his childhood best-friend to yell at him. Fortunately for him, he didn't get that reaction, and he relaxed his shoulders a bit, but was obviously still a little tense. "I thought you said you didn't want to come, since it'll piss you off no matter who won," Iwaizumi said, as he hopped over the back of the chairs to stand next to his friend.
Oikawa smiled slyly, taking his arms off his knees and leaning back into the chair he sat in. "No matter who wins, I'm going to be able to see the faces of whoever loses."
"Man. You really are a piece of crap." Iwaizumi glanced at Oikawa, who's face now held his "oh so famous" setter pout. It really confused the latter how every setter he saw seemed to make that same face whenever something pissed them off. It was kind of freaky. Pushing his thoughts aside, he sat down just one seat from Oikawa, knowing that he would want a little bit of personal space while dealing with all the crazy emotions going on inside his head.
Oikawa leaned forward in his seat a little bit, his eyes dead set on the so-called "Chibi-Chan." Iwaizumi could've have sworn he saw stars in his eyes, like Oikawa was just taken aback by every move the middle blocker made. Hell, maybe even every breath he took. Iwaizumi watched as the orange-haired ball of energy scored a point, yelling out in triumph. Oikawa seemed to smile with his eyes a little bit, his complexion brightening by the second. It was obvious what team he was mentally rooting for, even if he didn't say so himself.
Oikawa turned to Iwaizumi, probably to say some snotty remark about Ushiwaka, before noticing the latter was staring at him already. Chocolate-colored eyes met olive-colored ones, a blush rising on the setter's face. Oikawa quickly turned his head, his ears noticeably flushed.
Fuck. He's cute.
