There have been several gaming titles/genres/trends over the years which the hosts have displayed an exaggerated sense of "hatred" towards (often playing up their dislike for the cameras in order to make for humorous television).[20] These include:
Card battle games such as Yu-Gi-Oh!
Games based on anime series (particularly Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and Fullmetal Alchemist)
"Ungodly boob physics", where female video-game characters are rendered with impossibly large breasts that bounce and sway unnaturally and independently from the rest of their bodies (this phenomenon is particularly prevalent in Japanese dating simulation games like Sexy Beach 2)
Game series which continue to produce titles despite a lack of quality and/or innovation (such as Dynasty Warriors, Mega Man, Leisure Suit Larry, Tony Hawk, and Sonic The Hedgehog")
The proliferation of WWII first-person shooter games on the market (during their review of Moscow to Berlin: Red Siege, Morgan remarked "That's it! No more World War II games! According to my contract, I only have to review 75 World War II games per year, and I already hit my quota in March!")
Video games based on existing IPs (like current movies or TV shows), since they are usually rushed to the market to cash in on the latest craze and end up being painful to actually play (such as the Charlie's Angels or Da Vinci Code video games)
3D water levels in games, since the show's writers feel that game developers almost never capture the feeling of swimming in an enjoyable manner ("Instead of making us awkwardly pilot our character through zero-gravity space, why don't you just come to our house and punch us in the face? It's exactly the same amount of fun!")
Escort missions, where the player is forced to keep an NPC character (who has its own health meter) from dying; this often proves difficult when the NPC's A.I. is so insufficient that they continuously place themselves in harm's way (leaving the player with little or no chance to save them)
Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue (Morgan has often called this the worst game ever made)
Jonny Moseley and the ridiculous comments made in his video game Jonny Moseley Mad Trix (including the classic line "What if it snowed in San Francisco?")
Dane Cook and his brand of comedy
Uwe Boll and his film adaptions of video games
Shovelware for the Nintendo Wii, like All Star Cheer Squad and "Crappy Minigame Collection No. 272"
Developers who feel the need to take a perfectly acceptable single-player game and tack on a multiplayer mode
Sixaxis controls in PS3 games
3D Castlevania games
Level grinding in role-playing games

An Ode to Silver Boxes
To those who got into video games only in the last 10 or so years, the appeal of the Konami name might not be readily apparent. Newcomers to the hobby probably associate them with Metal Gear, soccer games, and probably little else. But there was a time when the Konami name was as good as gold; in the days of the NES, Konami built itself up as a gaming powerhouse, and it delivered its trademark brand of 8-bit action with a distinct, eye-catching hook: action-packed artwork framed by a silver border.
Tumblr media
To me, that silver box, with its weighted lines on either side that faded away to showcase the dynamic art, was a promise — a promise that something awesome was inside. Whether it was flying through space to save the galaxy in Gradius, running through the jungles with a buddy in Contra, hitting the ice in Blades of Steel, maneuvering an assault jeep across enemy territory in Jackal, or driving a stake into the heart of evil in Castlevania, there was almost always something good behind that silver veneer. It seemed like just about any game could get the Official Nintendo Seal of Quality, but to get into a silver box? That meant it had to be something special. It had to be elite: adrenaline-pumping gameplay, cutting-edge graphics, responsive controls, and some of the most memorable music you'll ever hear from a sound chip.
Not every Konami NES game was great, of course. Top Gun was fun until you tried to land, and few games have disappointed me as much as The Adventures of Bayou Billy. But for the most part, Konami consistently delivered excellent game after excellent game. To me, Konami games were just as much of a reason to own an NES as the first-party Nintendo titles were. It could be considered sacrilege, I know, but as much as I love the Super Mario series, Zelda, Metroid, and Punch-Out!!, if I was forced to choose one library over the other, I might take Konami's NES offerings over Nintendo's.
Tumblr media
And Konami's appeal went beyond those silver borders. Konami's second label, Ultra Games (created to circumvent Nintendo's third-party publishing restrictions), didn't feature the silver boxes, but typically delivered quality nonetheless (Metal Gear, anyone?), and Konami's reputation for amazing gaming experiences continued late into the NES's lifecycle and into the 16-bit era when Konami eschewed the silver frames for more conventional designs. But even when the silver was gone, the quality remained, with games such as Super Castlevania IV, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Axelay, Contra III, Rocket Knight Adventures, and one of my all-time personal favorites, Snatcher.
Tumblr media
And let's not forget Konami's licensed offerings. In an era when movie- and cartoon-based games were frequently unplayable garbage, Konami made licensed titles that weren't just good but brilliant. As a kid, I wasn't even a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tiny Toon Adventures, or The Simpsons, but I absolutely loved the games. (Well...not the first, awful NES TMNT game.) These games were fantastic whether you enjoyed the property they were based on or not, and the games actually got me interested in the franchises they were based on rather than the other way around. Co-op brawler TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, technique-filled platformer Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!, and skull-crunching beat-'em-up Batman Returns exude as much polish as anything released in the 16-bit era and remain among my favorite SNES games of all time. As for The Simpsons? Konami didn't have home-console rights to the property, so when the opportunity presented itself, I bought the actual arcade machine.
Tumblr media
As the gaming industry matured, consoles and gaming fads came and went, but Konami remained a leader, branching out into new genres, reinventing old ones, and pioneering its own with offerings that included Suikoden, Vandal Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill, Zone of the Enders, and the groundbreaking Dance Dance Revolution and Bemani music series. When the Pokémon craze hit, I was excited by the prospect of this new, collectable take on RPGs, but I was even more excited hearing that Konami had its own spin on the formula with Yu-Gi-Oh, which I was sure would outclass Pokémon in every way. I was completely wrong, of course, and in retrospect I'm glad, but at the time, it certainly seemed like a possibility.
Tumblr media
When I made my first trip to Japan in 1996, it warmed my heart to see a Konami building in the Tokyo skyline, complete with the classic red-and-yellow wave logo. "Those are my guys," I thought as I looked at the building. I knew they were making magic in there. Maybe someday the Konami Omni Building from Snatcher would even be a reality.
But the magic didn't last. Though Konami continued to pump out appealing games on both consoles and handhelds up through the PS2 and Nintendo DS eras (special shoutout to Contra 4, a game I'm incredibly proud to have had a hand in revealing), the company's output dropped dramatically after that. The rising costs associated with the PS3/Xbox 360 era were not kind to Japanese gaming, and the teams responsible for beloved franchises got dissolved, development on some properties were outsourced to external companies, and resources were shifted to pachinko machines and lackluster mobile titles. Subsidiary Hudson Soft, purchased by Konami in 2011, was shut down, and its brands were all but wiped from existence. Later, reports trickled in of how some of gaming's greatest minds were being mistreated by Konami management, and most of them abandoned ship at the first opportunity.
When I visited the once-proud company's E3 booth on the second day of the show in 2014, it looked like an abandoned wasteland. An irate Konami fan once accused me of taking the photo shown here before they'd finished setting up the booth, but this was right in the middle of gaming's biggest annual event, and they apparently didn't have any products to display. Instead of warming my heart like it had 18 years prior, this Konami just made me sad.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I applaud Konami for branching out into alternative revenue sources rather than go belly-up or face continuous losses like some Japanese gaming giants, but to say they threw the baby out with the bathwater is an understatement. By squandering their greatest resource — their creative personnel — and abandoning the brands that made them famous, Konami has eliminated the very things that made them special, and destroyed the good will and respect that they'd forged with a generation of fans.
Will Konami ever try to take back its place of greatness in gaming's pantheon? Will they consider reviving brands like Gradius, Contra, Mystical Ninja, and Suikoden? Or could those series be licensed to talented outside studios who, like me, were inspired by Konami's original works and would love to carry on the legacy? After seeing Konami's revival of Bomberman R on Switch, it may be fair to say that those old brands may not be dead just yet.
Then again, if they are, I'll still always have my old cartridges...and my memories of those captivating silver boxes.

Note
To Sigma, and his mun, what are your ten favourite games? Any games you're looking forward to?
“Well I have a preference for fighting games. Let’s go over my ten favourite games. I like these:
Ultra Street Fighter IV - I can use M. Bison and enjoy every minute of it!
Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 - I can finally defeat that blasted Barbie doll! Maybe…
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - Such a wide variety. I personally enjoy using Ogre and Dr. Bosconovitch
Street Fighter X Tekken - I can have a tag team of many characters I enjoy using from Street Fighter and Tekken! Not to mention two adorable cats, Pac-Man and a so called Mega Man…
Super Smash Bros Wii U - Yes! I can use Ganondorf to defeat so many pests!Playstation All Stars Battle Royale - I like Kratos. Plus that white cat is playable. Toro I believe.
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom - I can use a little girl with a mop as a weapon to destroy everyone including Zero! What’s not to love?
Soul Calibur V - I can use Ezio Auditore in a fighting game. This is a major breakthrough! Plus custom characters can be created. I can try and recreate my mavericks to an extent.
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X - I can play as Vile on a portable. This is great! Although I should have been playable. Not Vile. X is playable too much.
Nintendogs Labrador and Friends - I love dogs so much! Puppies are so adorable! I especially like training labradors and corgis!
And as an honourable mention! The Teen Titans game for PS2 and Gamecube! That was such a good fighter!
And as for a game I am looking forward to…it is of course Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite! I will win this time for sure! I am camping outside to get that!”
((I will put mine under a cut because it is longer than Sigma’s.))
((Unlike Sigma my list isn’t filled with fighters. My favourite games in no particular order are:
-Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists of the Roses - I would hate to see how many hours I put into this game. I loved my deck in it which was lead by Princess of Tsurugi and I would love to have the games physically.
-Pokemon Emerald - It is tight between this and SoulSilver and Platinum but I will go with Emerald. Pokemon is very important to me. I like this game as it is better than all the other Hoenn games and Hoenn is my favourite region. I adore Team Magma and Team Aqua as well.
-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team - This was one of my first Nintendo DS games (others were New Super Mario Bros and Nintendogs Dachshund and Friends) and it is my favourite overall Pokemon game. I love the story and the dungeons and everything about it. No other Mystery Dungeon has topped this for me.
-Mega Man X Command Mission - I don’t think I will explain any of the X games I added to this list as I could write and write and write. But I will say that this is one RPG that I never grew tired of. I find RPGs very difficult to get into but this is one I have finished and love to play over and over. Plus I love Zero’s unlockable armour.
-Mega Man X Collection - I solely put this on here because each of the games on this with the exception of one of the games (no, not Battle and Chase, X3 or X6 I love those games) can keep me entertained for ages. I especially adore X1 and X5. (Yes I know that this game is technically 7 games in one, I am cheating here.)
-Ratchet and Clank (PS2, not the re-imagined one) - This was one of my first PS2 games and I loved every minute of it, I know the game inside out and would really like to try and achieve a platinum trophy for it on PS3. I can play this game for hours, over and over and never grow bored.
-Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 - I would have put Raging Blast 2 here, but I like that I can create my own character (a female majin for those curious) and be able to have Frieza, Cell, and especially Zarbon and Whis as mentors.
-Sonic Adventure 2 - I don’t know if I want to go in depth with this game either. I enjoy every aspect of the game. Even ones that I know a lot of people dislike. I really love the music as well. I wouldn’t say I am very good at it though, I know I will never get five ranks on some stages but I don’t mind, video games are about fun! Plus I love the Chao Garden.
-Sonic Riders Zero Gravity - I prefer this over the original. I used to grab 2 Wii Remotes and 2 PS2 controllers and always do a 4 team relay race and would always place Sonic, Shadow, Amy and Silver on a team. Fun times!
-Sega Superstars Tennis - NiGHTS and Reala plus all the mini games kept me entertained. I still struggle against Alex Kidd in some of the events but on PS2 all I am missing is some AAA ranks and I would be done. I loved the courts and the music selection as well.
Probably not the most popular games in the world but they hold a special place for me, each and everyone of these I have listed.
Also a game I look forward to? Hmm…probably Sonic Forces if I’m honest.))

Okay, so, since everyone is taking stock of their bigass nerdy collections...
I’ve got Gundam shit all over the place. Vinyls, Gunpla, manga, anime, video games, I am in Gundam hell. I do not have as much money for toku shit so right now it is mostly my Kamen Rider Decade stuff and my Figuarts (all of it Kamen Rider; I have ZX, Kiva-la (<3) and Ryuki + Dragredder). I have a Duel Disk too, even if that’s in my room, and a nice big Yu-Gi-Oh poster. God. I have YGO cards for days. I’m in children’s card game hell, too.
Lots of Pokemon stuff here and there. I have a Biyomon plushie. Oh! There’s also that PVC Decade statue I have. Lots of LotR Lego sets I’ve built displayed here and there. As for consoles... Gamecube, Ps2, Xbox 360, Ps3, Ps4, DS lite, DSi, 3DS, and a GBA SP somewhere, a Wii, and a Wii U. Between them I probably have like 200+ games.  There’s also my oldass collection of Power Rangers VHSes, and I think we have my crate of Power Rangers stuff in the storage room.
Wonder if my Growl Phone is in there?
