Hi! I keep seeing hanfu robes with just one shoulder, usually for men. What's up with that? Is it a thing that actually existed?
Hi, thanks for the question, and sorry for taking ages to reply!
Yes, the style of wearing hanfu robes with just one shoulder for men existed historically, during the Tang dynasty. As @beehunni62 wrote in this post:
The specific trend of hanfu worn here was one used during the Tang Dynasty, specifically for archery and/or horse riding. It’s composed of a white silk round collar undershirt 圆领汗衫中衣, a jacket called a banbi 半臂, and a round collar robe 圓領袍.
The sleeve pertaining to the arm of the dominant hand was removed from the shoulder and tucked under the belt to allow for maximum mobility and comfort while shooting arrows or horse riding.
The trend created the opportunity for two or more different fabrics to be placed side by side showcasing an aesthetic contrast.
Please check out the post for a more detailed explanation with images.
Hope this helps! ^^

The base pattern is taken from this daxiushan (大袖衫) pattern. To make this daxiushan (Heipaoshi's Version), I shortened the sleeves a bit, added extra length to the body, added a hood, and added the weird gauzy bits on the back. I also added some cording on the shoulders and the sides of the hood, following the design from the show as closely as I could. You'll also notice a couple decorative bands of black ribbon on the chest and at the waist, as well as a square of skightly different black fabric on the back — these are also embellishments added to follow the model in the drama.
Fabric: raw silk noil, cotton lining in the hood, a silk habotai square, silk gauze, silk ribbons, cotton cording. Entirely handsewn using waxed black linen thread.

cool fact, there are four different shades of red in this picture.
I only realized after coloring that he's missing any sort of waist ornament or bag! He's pretending to be a cultivator, he should have at least a little bit of jade hanging off his waist! And he needs a bag to put all the shit he's stealing in! Ah well, we will say he's got some under his yuanlingpao :p
As some of y'all know, I'm making a Heipaoshi cosplay, and I'm currently working on the yuanlingpao for it. Earlier today, I finished sewing up the outside part of it and tried it on for the first time, and I was correct with thinking yuanlingpao looked really hecking comfortable.
The first time I saw a yuanlingpao I thought "that's a brilliant garment. I love how it looks and it also looks really comfy and practical. 10/10 this is my favourite type of hanfu"
I have now confirmed that all of the above is true! Practical, comfortable, and also a very cool appearance (especially if you do a different colour lining and leave the collar open!!) The Tang dynasty really knew what was up! Yuanlingpao are excellent!! As soon as it's finished, with the lining inserted and everything, I will be wearing it constantly.
