All I’m saying is-
Katara falling in love with Yue and Sokka crushing on (a nicer version of) Hahn in the Northern Water Tribe just makes SENSE-
Oh and of course, Zukka endgame😌

I was thinking about how much yue’s death must have meant to katara (and I honestly believe her death had the most impact on her after her mom’s, yes even more than jet) in the narrative sense.
imagine katara finally reaching the north in all its grandeur, meeting her northern equivalent and she’s probably thinking how much better off yue had it than her. but then yue goes on to make the ultimate sacrifice, not just for the world but specifically for the water tribe and waterbending. and then how much waterbending has always been such an integral part of katara’s character and how like her mom, yue gave her life so katara (and the entire tribe) could not only survive but live on waterbending.
and then just how much yue’s narrative is a foil to katara’s arc just as much as azula’s is:
these two princesses trying to meet their father’s expectations and both meeting their tragic end (re: defeat for azula) as they do just that.
especially yue, being a girl i don’t believe she was going to be a chief hence her arranged marriage to hahn. her life has always been carved out for her and the only way she breaks free from this is by literally dying, but of course, she dies for her people. she makes her father proud while freeing herself from the life he sets out for her by simultaneously losing the ability to live at all.
i also think it’s fascinating how yue a nonbender growing up in the north where she never would have learnt how to fight anyway becomes the most powerful waterbender ever in death.
and then you have katara, who is if nothing else, a survivor. katara is a female character that gets to choose where she lives, who she loves, when she fights, heals etc. without any pushback from her father or anyone in her tribe. her legacy extends past her home and goes beyond the men in her family but it’s because of women like yue and her mom that she has the chance to do so.
so i think katara would hold yue in high regard and her death would definitely have impacted her (at least symbolically) more than the canon lets on.
i also like to think katara spent some time with yue realizing they have more in common than just daughters of the chief. idk maybe she thought yue would have been too naive and pampered in the beginning but that’s just me projecting atp.
i think they would have bonded due to yue’s spirituality and her storytelling, possibly filling little gaps in katara’s cultural knowledge like the story of the moon and ocean spirits. i think katara would have appreciated it and in return yue probably relished having a female friend that wasn’t trying to compete with her or kiss up to her for brownie points, which i imagine happens in societies with nobility if jane austen adaptations have taught me anything.

I was reluctant to make this poll, since I thought it likely that it would prove to be a little predictable, if you catch my drift, but maybe I'm wrong. If you reblog this, I would appreciate it as it will increase the sample size.

is yue/katara a thing? is there an au where katara, master waterbender of the southern water tribe, eventually becomes the ocean spirit to yue’s moon, and they have an epic afterlife slow burn romance? do they become the new yin yang? yue who has such a strong sense of duty and tradition that she would sacrifice herself for her people, and katara who has such strong ideals that she would overturn tradition in the name of what’s right? if its not it really really should be

the epilogue of once in a blue moon has been posted. In this very final chapter: we say our farewells to the world of White Lotus Gambit and its characters. <3
thank you for reading, it was a pleasure to have you along for this lengthy journey of 2,5 years. Still, there's no reason to despair, because Azula's Kitchen Nightmares will continue, and more stories await their turn to be told in the future!

I'm a day late with this, but here's a drawing for @atlasapphicweek day 2: mythology/spirits. And hey, it's Moon Landing Day, so it's actually perfect for a moon-themed drawing. My original idea was to include the two fish to more directly tie it to spirits, but that got lost in the process. The water and moon still represent Tui and La though. I'm not sure if I 100% ship Yue and Katara, but the themes make for some cool artwork!

Image description: A digital drawing of Katara and Yue from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Katara has one hand over Yue's heart and one raised above her head, guiding a stream of water that starts at the top of the drawing and curves across the bottom left corner. Yue gently touches Katara's face. Both girls are smiling. There is a crescent moon in the sky above Yue and the dark background is speckled with stars.

Ship Stats for Katara
Surprise! If you were expecting Azula’s ship stats, those will be posted tomorrow. But for today, let’s go over Katara’s instead.
Tumblr media
Methods
On January 1, 2023, I took a survey of works for 32 Katara ships from 01/01/2013 to 12/31/2022.
Data
This chart is for the totals of the sample surveyed. And the other is a table of the chart’s raw numbers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the chart of the total Katara ship fics broken down by year. It included the top 10 ships (zutara , kataang, azutara, jetara, yuetara, katoph, sukitara, kacest, Maitara, harutara)
Tumblr media
And here’s the table for the both the 10 ships in the chart, as well as one showing all 32 ships in the sample
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s this chart that shows the year to year output of works rather than the total. It features the same 10 ships as the previous chart.
Tumblr media
And then the raw data tables for this chart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally the annual output by partner gender
Tumblr media
Observations
Total sample of works by year
Before 2020, the growth of the sample never exceeded 600 works
2020 was the year where the most Katara ship works were added
2022 is the third most productive year, and while down significantly from 2021 is still higher than every pre-2020 year
2022 saw the addition of four Katara ships new to AO3: Iroh/Katara, Katara/Kuei, Katara/Lu Ten and Katara/Piandao
Cumulative count by year
in terms of total fic count, zutara has consistently remained the Katara ship with the most works.
Kataang has held second place consistently.
From 2013 to 2017, katoph held third place. Since 2018, Azutara has held third place.
Annual output by year
Zutara has consistently not only held first place, but each year the majority of Mai ship works were zutara.
Starting in 2019, Zutara’s majority dipped below 60%, and zutara’s output by percentage for 2022 is the lowest it’s ever been (52%)
Kataang’s highest output year was 2020, at 38%. This has slightly declined to 35%, which is still above pre-2020 performance, especially the all time low of output in 2017.
Historically, third place has switched between jetara, katoph and azutara until Azutara began consistently holding third place in 2018.
Despite the appearance by percentage, Maitara and Kacest’s 2022 output are behind their 2021 output.
The Katara ships that outperformed their 2021 numbers in 2022 are: Azutara, Hahn/Katara, Harutara, Jetara, Jiang/Katara, Katara/Ozai, and Katara/Zhao
Other observations
Every year, the annual output of M/F Katara works is much greater than the output of F/F Katara works
2022 saw the greatest annual output of  F/F Katara works on record
