Headcanon: Kodo, Kaoru, Sannan, Chizuru during dinner

As Sannan is the only love interest to receive parental approval (Kodo) to date Chizuru in his own route, I really want an AU in which Kodo and Kaoru remain alive (SSL perhaps?). Imagine how fun messy the family dinners will be. Imagine how absolutely hilarious awful it will be when Chizuru brings Sannan home to introduce him to her father and her brother as her boyfriend.

The atmosphere during the dinner is uncomfortable, nobody is fighting or arguing but there is this uncomfortable sense that the three men dislike the others and regularly direct snide and passive aggressive remarks towards the others. Imagine the mutual dislike Kodo and Sannan will have for each other, but they will still be fascinated by each other's research. Also imagine how Kaoru will dislike Sannan so much and keep trying to annoy him by snide personal attacks but, unfortunately for Kaoru, Sannan will remain calm throughout them all and just respond with seemingly innocuous words laced with barbs, which pisses Kaoru off every time. Then there is poor Chizuru, the only truly nice person in this family gathering, trying desperately to keep the peace but failing utterly because she is not sure how to proceed.

Yamazaki's Short Story from Hakuoki Manyo no Shou Limited Edition Booklet (Translation)

This story is sooo cute that I got to translate it. I often wondered if Yamazaki and Chizuru are of the same MBTI type. The two of them are just perfect together.

(As for the Chinese herbal medicine, it seems that there is no need to buy more for the time being… The problem is the tools and medicines used for treating wounds and Western medicine…) 

I am completely ignorant about the tools and medicines for medical arts and Western medicine. I have no choice but to consult with Yukimura-kun.

As I was thinking about these things, I looked for Yukimura-kun, but I couldn’t find her. 

When I went out to the courtyard, I saw Shimada, who was about to go somewhere, so I called out to him. 

“Shimada-kun, have you seen Yukimura-kun? I have something to ask her.” 

“Oh, Yamazaki-kun. I saw Yukimura-kun hanging kimonos in the courtyard.” 

“The courtyard, huh? Thanks.” 

I thanked Shimada-kun and hurried to the courtyard. 

As Shimada-kun said, Yukimura-kun was in the courtyard, hanging kimonos. 

“Yukimura-kun.” 

When I called out to her, she quietly turned around. 

“Ah, Yamazaki-san, hello.” 

“Are you hanging kimonos?” 

“Yes, it’s almost the season to change clothes. I want the other Shinsengumi members to wear them comfortably.” 

“…I see.”

It is said that women tend to notice the details more than men, and I strongly feel that when I look at Yukimura-kun.

 (I also pride myself on being attentive, and I often receive compliments from the Vice-Commander, but still I can’t match Yukimura-kun.) 

As I was thinking about that– 

“So, Yamazaki-san, do you have something for me?”

 I came to my senses when Yukimura-kun asked me. 

“Ah. Actually–” 

I asked Yukimura-kun for advice on buying medical tools and Western medicines. 

“…So, if there is anything missing, I thought I would buy it on the way.” 

“I understand. I will check our backlog as soon as I finish this.”

 Yukimura-kun said so and tried to resume her work.

 “I’ll help you. It will be faster if we do it together.” 

“But… are you sure? Yamazaki-san, don’t you have other work to do?” 

“It’s not that I don’t, but it’s not so urgent that I have to do it right now. Besides, it would be better if you come with me for shopping. And we might be able to find Koudou-san on the way.” 

“Yamazaki-san…” 

Yukimura-kun looked at me with a grateful expression… 

(When I’m looked at like this, I feel… uneasy. I know she doesn’t have any ulterior motives, but still…)

 She bowed her head, expressing her gratitude. 

“Thank you for your kindness. I’ll take your word and go with you.” 

“Don’t mention it. After all, we are the ones who are forcing you to live in inconvenience. Rather than that, let’s finish this quickly. You also would like a bit more time looking for Koudou-san, don’t you?” 

“Yes, I understand–”

The moment she finished speaking, a small yawn escaped from her mouth.

 “Ah… I’m sorry! I was up late last night.” 

She apologized, looking away in embarrassment.

 “Didn’t you sleep well?” 

“I was reading the book on Eastern medicine that you lent me the other day.” 

“…You don’t have to rush to read it. I told you that you can return it anytime when I lent it to you.” 

“That’s true, but…” 

“If you’re sleepy and tired–”

 I was about to suggest canceling today’s outing, but I stopped myself. 

For Yukimura-kun, who was allowed to go out alone, she couldn’t miss the opportunity to look for Koudou-san. 

“You should take a nap over there. I’ll take care of the clothes.”

 “That’s-- too much!” 

Yukimura-kun immediately refused my offer… 

“If you go out with me like this, it will be more troublesome if you collapse on the way. Just follow what I said.” 

She showed a sad expression on her face. 

“You’re right. I’m sorry.” 

“No, I didn’t mean to blame you… Sorry, I chose my words poorly.” 

“No, it’s not like that…” 

Seeing Yukimura-kun’s expression become more depressed, I regretted my earlier mistake. 

“I know very well that you’re working hard for the Shinsengumi. It won’t hurt to take a nap. I’ll call you when I’m done, so rest over there.”

 I secretly worried that she would take my words in a bad way again, and waited for her reply. 

A smile finally appeared on her lips.

 “I understand. Then I’ll take your word and rest for a while. Thank you always, Yamazaki-san.”

 She bowed her head slightly and sat down on a bench nearby. She closed her eyes and began to doze off. 

(I didn’t do anything worth thanking me for. What is it… How nice is she?)

 I thought so, but I felt relieved by talking to her. 

(She’s good at medicine, of course, but maybe she also has the power to heal broken hearts without knowing it.) 

I thought so as I started working on the clothes that I took over from Yukimura-kun (somewhat forcibly).

Before long– I was in trouble after I finished hanging all the kimonos.

The problem was when to call out to her and wake her up. 

Probably, if I call out to her now, it would be too short a time to be called a nap.

 But if I go and do other work and then wake her up, it might be too late. 

But more than that, I can’t leave Yukimura-kun sleeping here. 

(Well, what should I do…) 

I was thinking about these things as I stood next to her. 

When I am looking at Yukimura-kun sleeping defenselessly, I feel somewhat sorry to wake her up.

 Or rather, I feel like I want to keep looking at her like this——. 

As I dwelled on these thoughts, a gust of wind began to blow.

 “Hmm… Ah… Um, how long have I been sleeping? The kimonos?” 

Yukimura-kun woke up and asked me, looking around at me and the surroundings. 

“O-oh, I’m glad you’re awake. I finished hanging the kimonos and was about to wake you up.” 

“Is… is that so… I’m sorry. I really left it all to you.” 

“Don’t worry about it. Come on, get ready to go out.” 

“…Yes!”

 She left a cheerful reply and went away.

As I watched her back, I wish I could have seen her sleeping face a little longer…

Synopsis:

“In 1864 Japan, a young woman named Chizuru Yukimura is searching for her missing father, Koudou, a doctor by trade whose work often takes him far from home. But with no word from him in months, Chizuru disguises herself as a man and heads to Kyoto in search of him. Attracting the attention of ronin, she tries to hide and ends up witnessing a horrifying sight: the ronin being brutally murdered by crazed white-haired men. In a startling turn of events, members of the Shinsengumi arrive to dispatch the creatures. So like at the end of Heisuke route, Sen writes to Chizuru, telling her that Koudou is now safe and is now going to Chizuru.

I haven’t played Ginsei yet but I once read a review that said Kodo ended up getting killed by Kazama. So I wonder whether they change their minds about how to end it and realize that to let Koudou meet Chizuru and Heisuke will be too easy an end.

But really curious about how the meeting will go. Heisuke is so worried about meeting his father-in-law and is wondering about how to ask Koudou for his daughter’s hand in marriage lol.

Oh, I’m so glad to hear that!! But truth be told, I don’t have very many thoughts on Kodo. Or rather, no readily available thoughts. In fact, I usually avoid thinking about him. So let’s see what happens once I sit down and try…

First of all, Kodo certainly fulfills his purpose as a villain, since I find him so repulsive. He is most definitely a functional character, as well as the kind of bad guy you’d hiss at in an old-timey stage play. I agree wholeheartedly with Nagakura’s title for him, “you senile fuck”. The problem I run into is mostly that, compared to most everyone else in the original cast, his characterization is two-dimensional. Because of the way Kodo is relegated to the position of antagonist in every route, whether he plays a major role or not, I’ve never been able to get a good read on the kind of person he is when he’s not crazy. This is a contrast to Kazama, who—while likewise variable in his motivation and/or behavior—does get at least some pre-split development, and is not a villain in every route (i.e. Heisuke’s, his own).

What we do know about Kodo, largely through inference, is that he is curious and intelligent enough to have gone abroad and studied in Holland at some point. We also know he started out working for the shogunate before he left for the western domains. I just don’t know why, after having been disguised as a human for more than ten years, he would serve the exact same humans that razed his village. Did the Tokugawa order him to do it due to his foreign education, even without any knowledge of his heritage? If so, I’d really have liked to hear about how that got started, because in a story so fixated on “here’s what everyone is fighting for and why”, I remember being extremely confused about Kodo’s shift in allegiance. To an extent, I still am. Though, perhaps there’s more unlocalized information in Reimeiroku…

At any rate, Kodo’s true motivation almost always boils down to getting revenge on the shogunate and/or expanding the Yukimura clan. That much, at least, is generally consistent (although nationalism is also a factor in Harada’s route for some reason). And his vendetta is understandable, given his status as one of so few surviving demons from the Yukimura village. However, I’ve always had a great deal of trouble getting into Kodo’s head long enough to see exactly how his mind was warped. Was that senseless destruction the immediate source of his decision, or was it more gradual than that? How unstable was he before the massacre? For instance, was he always this willing to let the ends justify the means? When exactly did he take the Water of Life, and for what exact reason—for experimentation, for power, out of necessity? Does he ever look back on the path he chose, and wonder about alternatives? Does he have any regrets that do not relate to Chizuru?

These are the kinds of things I’d like to know about Kodo. Without more background information on who he is rather than simply what he does, I have little choice but to think of him simply as “Chizuru’s evil father”. Much of the narrative tells without showing, because we are looking at this story through Chizuru’s eyes, and she is an unreliable narrator as far as her father is concerned. To say she’s biased is an understatement; until Kodo’s true ambition rears its ugly head, she’s the quintessential Daddy’s Girl. Trouble is, given how little onscreen development time they have together, I’ve never fully grasped exactly how that level of attachment developed in the first place.

You see, the other thing we know about Kodo is that he is a good actor. So good, in fact, that he is somehow capable of fooling Chizuru, over the course of her entire upbringing, into thinking he legitimately cares for her. Whether he actually does depends on the route, since sometimes he doesn’t care at all (to the point of killing her), and other times he really does (to the point of dying for her) but is terribly misguided. The issue I take with that variability in particular is that Chizuru’s childhood obviously takes place in the past, and therefore the difference in how Kodo behaves toward her per route feels almost like a form of retconning. Chizuru’s choice of love interest has literally nothing to do with Kodo’s opinions and actions, yet somehow, his behavior is qualitatively different across routes. I get that this is a function of the game and not the plot, but it makes no sense from an in-universe standpoint. It’s hard for me to understand him as a single character, all parts of him united, because his personality apparently fragmented so many years before the story even began.

And here we come to the heart of the matter: it is very difficult for me to assess Kodo as a person instead of just a plot device, because his personality feels so much dependent on continuity.

Basically, Kodo inspires many more questions than he offers answers. Because he is used as a catalyst for other characters’ development rather than being given any development himself, he does not strike me as a complete character. And therefore, I can comment only on his implementation, rather than his true identity.
