Types of Blade Magic

Blades follow an eight-element, three-typed magic system. Elements are light, dark, water, fire, wind, ice, earth, and lightning. The three types are healer, tank, dps.

Each pair of elements represents one virtue from opposite angles. Light and dark are idealistic justice and cynical justice; water and fire are tranquil bravery and passionate bravery. Wind and ice are subjective and objective truth. Earth and lightning are singular deep compassion and multiple shallow compassions. The Virtues don’t really impact how the magic works, but it can be used as a personality marker.

For example, a light Blade would find justice by setting up a public trial. A dark Blade would get revenge.

I understand that this Blade system is based on XC 2’s blade system, but I have never played XC 2. I discovered the blade system through the awesome YWKON fics by rarsneezes, which are the Blade system in a world with characters from the Tales series. Based on that and my general familiarity with the magic of Aeselia, spell names and effects are going to be from that magic system.

Also Aeselia magic system has a spell called Resurrection which does exactly what it says and I can’t pass that up for a DSMP AU.

Blades also have internal magic that makes them harder to kill than most Players. They are physically stronger as well, and have a passive regen that usually takes care of even the worst wounds within a day.

Blades, even strong Blades, don’t tend to have many techniques that are straight-up elemental manipulation on a massive scale. Usually, it is more along the lines of adding elemental damage to regular combat or casting passive, potion-like buffs.

Most elemental abilities are minor and active passively. For example, water Blades and ice Blades tend to have lower body temperatures. Fire Blades have higher body temperatures. Water Blades also don’t get wet in the rain and dry off very quickly after they stop swimming.

Another example, dark Blades tend to blend very well with the shadows. A more powerful dark Blade can even make themselves unnoticeable in bright daylight—people’s eyes just pass over them. Light Blades have the opposite issue, they tend to glow. They also tend to have a passive attention attraction, even when they don’t want to. A light Blade that is trying can make it near-impossible to look away from them.

c!Technoblade’s sense of direction is a facet of his powers as an earth Blade in this AU. I mostly chose earth because of the way he cares so deeply if you show him kindness in turn. Also one of the bonuses is that he would be able to use Ground Dasher or Gravity well or even Grand Cataclysm. Like, in this AU he could've done Doomsday by himself in 30min, but he decided to be nice and share.

c!Punz tends to use his passive notice-me-not often when he doesn’t feel like dealing with people, or when he’s gathering information.

Poor c!Dream is a light Blade, and because he is very powerful his passive is powerful as well. Even though he's not trying, he glows at night. Since he is pretending he is not a Blade, this ups his weirdness factor in the eyes of other server members. The decaying Resonance from pushing away c!George to protect him affects his aether control. The fact that it is hard not to notice him gets used by other server members, subconsciously, as part of the scapegoating process leading up to Stagedfinale.

I am unhappy about Doomsday + Wilbur said Dream is a tyrant + I am always thinking about him even though Techno and Phil were there too = Dream is the person solely/mostly at fault for Doomsday and other bad things and we need to deal with him right now.

6) are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

Oh yeah, for sure. There's Tailwind and its related series by my friend @mirrormystic. There's YWKON, started and mostly penned by my friend @rarmaster, with some additions from some other friends (including myself!). There's Bladework, by my friend @starcrossed-sky. There's this classic from you, Tea, that I find myself rereading a lot when I'm in the mood for some nostalgic comfort.

And there are a few fics written by people I don't know that I constantly reread, too. signal to noise, which, though unfinished, is perhaps the best TWEWY fic out there. Sinnatious' The Fifth Act, which is still one of the better FFVII fics out there, in my opinion. As N Approaches Infinity, the Madoka Magica/Bleach crossover I never knew I needed that blew my tits clean off. The Hours 'Verse, which I found before it had reached Persona 5 in content and have kept up with since. marigolds, which is perhaps my favourite Persona 5 fic of all time.

I could honestly probably keep going--I reread fics more than I read new fics--but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

10) is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

This question's a little difficult to parse, but the answer could be that there are several, all in different ways. Like--I never expected The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year to blow up as much as it did, even as I was writing it. It's still my most popular fic; I look at its stats sometimes and lose my mind over them. And I certainly never expected to get as much harassment and Um Actuallys in my Xenoblade fics as I have, lmao.

For the most part, I think I generally get the expected reaction from my fics? With maybe one or two small outliers who have a different takeaway from most. I'm honestly thankful that my intent and themes generally come through lol ;__;

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 x Tales of Destiny because Swordians are basically already Blades in the ways that matter. Note: Swordians are backwards. They are a living sword with a core crystal. Chal's "body" is auxiliary at best.

Note: Judas is an involuntary blade eater. Chaltier gave him half of his core crystal to save his life. Generally, Chaltier does not have a tangible body. The body (in this setting) is a hologram-like projection. Thankfully, Jade fixes that later.

Chaltier is an artificial Earth (compassion) Blade! However, due to the way he is designed to hella sync with his driver when he DOES sync, something about his relationship with Leon has actually caused him to also gain the dark aspect (justice). 

Judas is armed to the teeth because he refrains from using Chaltier for violence, since Chaltier, being an inanimate object, can’t physically stop people from just picking him up and using him. That’s no good! Chal is fine with Judas wielding him! But he appreciates not being used as a tool for murder.

Yes, I did flip part of the guard around on Chaltier’s hilt to make it FUNCTIONAL. I will leave canon Chal be, but AU = my city now and we like our swords to be functional when possible. The normal (canon) design requires either  A) striking with the back of the blade if you want to have a functional guard that keeps your fingers from being sliced off, or B) holding him awkwardly so the guard presses against your wrist and hampers your movement. I don’t think Inomata understood the vital functions of these parts of a saber hilt when designing the Swordians, back in the day.

oh, i was talking to rar abt ywkon a while ago, and they said this was 'more of a nael question' so uh. in ywkon, are there any plans to bring luke (and/or ion) back? just curious

god. there's so much post-ywkon that lives in my head about that. short answer: yes, but who knows if we'll ever get the energy to answer.

Longer answer: there is in fact an entire story that transpires in the ywkon universe after Asch takes out Van and goes into apparent perma-sleep, which you get a glance of in the Sync and Tear fic. It's centered in the war, the collapse of the current nations, and Mohs being a motherfucker. The net conclusion of this is Ion gets broken enough that he can't activate, and Luke goes to sleep Pyra-style in what is in the modern day a ruin under Tethe'alla castle.

(Bonus fun fact: Zelos is modeled off legends of a historic red-haired blade who helped found the kingdom... that is, Luke. Which I feel like Colette might be similarly modelled on Tear but 2K years was enough to shift her storied hair color from light brown to blond)

anyway so they do eventually go find Luke and fix Ion, who doesn't have any of his previous memories as a result of the damage, but, yknow, is still the same Ion fundamentally. Jade gets a fresh series of meltdowns about people who knew his past self. yknow. just ywkon things.

...Well, basically the same thing as in the canon 'verse.

So it's a bit more complicated then that. DreamXD is basically letting him do his time traveling thing, so he will write books about what he sees time traveling, so DreamXD can search for something that he lost a long time ago, using those books as a reference.

To further explain, we have to get into the basis of the Blade system's life cycle and a bit of ancient history!

So, at the beginning of the world, Blades hadn't really hit "population" yet. Population is roughly 1 Blade to 5 Players, even though not every Blade is in Resonance at any one time.

XC2 has Blades coming from Titans--but we don't have those here. YWKON does Blades growing on trees, which is very cool but there's a simpler solution. Blades spawn when a server is created.

Now, when the universe was young, you'd get maybe 5 - 10 Blades spawn per server. Now that the population has reached its optimum level, you will have a very small chance of 1 Blade being spawned per server creation.

And it's not like the core crystals are just showing up at spawn. If a Blade spawns with the server, the core crystal is somewhere completely random in the world. There is only one way to make sure that a Blade spawns with a server, and that is to offer the shards of a broken Blade when the server seed is being generated. It's a balance thing--offer a broken/dead Blade to guarantee the spawn of a new Blade. No matter how many shards you offer, it's always 1-1 for the spawn rate.

Now people don't go breaking core crystals for fun. A Blade that has been in circulation for a while has more Procedural Memory than a newly-spawned Blade. That means that they will automatically have more inbuilt skill with the powers that they have, even if the new Blade is going to be roughly the same power level.

This comes to the history lesson! A long time ago, there was a war involving the gods and their Aegis. This had 3 notable outcomes:

The Blood God straight up died. He is gone. The current "Blood God" is the original Blood God's Aegis Blade, who ripped their Driver's heart out of their corpse and used it to become the first Heartstealer.

If this hadn't been done they all would've died. The current Blood God has a fondness for Heartstealers because of it--see their relationship with c!Techno.

2. The Aegis of the Goddess of Death asked to have his memory erased in the aftermath. He wanted to see the world they worked so hard to save with his own eyes and explore it as a mortal. This is how we get the current c!Phil.

3. DreamXD's Aegis Blade sacrificed themselves to buy time. They used a literal spell called "Sacrifice," which heals everyone in the party to full heath and does massive damage to the entire enemy party. It also automatically kills the user. This isn't final for a Blade, which reverts to a core crystal, but one of the nearby enemies survived. And used the opening to shatter the core crystal and throw it away, to different servers. And DreamXD was left alone, with no Resonance.

Now, normally smashing a core crystal kills the Blade completely. And no matter how many shards you offer to how many servers, one Blade dead is one new Blade spawn. But Aegis Blades are special. Each of the pieces of the core crystal became a new Blade, with the same color of core crystal, same light element, same healer affinity, and same instinctive call to return to DreamXD's original server.

DreamXD wants his Aegis Blade back. His very first friend. Maybe then they can go back to the beginning, where everything was good and happy.

To get back to the point, DreamXD gave Karl his time traveling powers so he could use Karl's stories to track down the Blades made from the pieces of his Aegis when they were called back to the server.

Karl was chosen for this task partly because DreamXD picked up a bit of lingering energy on him, where he'd met and been around one or more of the Blades (c!Dream, Mamacita, Drista). Karl's adventures did lead to him locating Cornelius and claiming that Blade after Cornelius' apparent "death" in The Village that Went Mad.

The reason that Karl is having memory issues in this AU is that his brain just isn't built to process the time travel magic that he has. He is a non-Blade, who has been given access to Blade magic, without actually being in Resonance. Every time he time travels, the magic is using his memories to help build a frame of reference, and then the magic is putting them back incorrectly, because Karl's brain does not save memories the way a Blade's half-digital existence would.

As an example, Karl's mind is like a library. Every time the time travel powers activate, books are removed from the shelves. But without being a Blade or in Resonance with a Blade, the books are being put back wrong. Either they've been shelved wrong (emotions connecting to the wrong memories, thoughts triggering things that are unrelated) or they haven't been put back at all (there's empty spaces, in the bookshelves of Karl's mind). It's not that they're gone, it's just a mess. If he were a Blade, the memories would sort back automatically. If he were in Resonance with a Blade, then that would act as a "librarian" and slowly help get his mind back in order.
