Just stunning at 13. Ripe round nose, gobs of tertiary, smacks of Apple Jacks and a wee bit vegetal, a length of soapy cinnamon and rust matching the rim of ruby. Not a blockbuster in the mouth by far. Refined and subdued, with brilliant pieces lurking behind each brain-cell. Perfect mellow cherry, a gasp of acid tingly and nice. Tannins polished to a crispy tarnish, probably drinking at near-peak. This is some of Doug Margerum's handiwork, from 3 Creek Vineyard way before they started putting HAPPY CANYON on a front label--and long before the AVA. I still to this day run into people who are surprised the Santa Ynez Valley grows anything other than Pinot and Chardonnay. Happy Canyon and Eastern SYV are one of my favorite places for cab & kin in the world. A beautiful visit, this bottle is kind of a blast from the past and I doubt if there's any more around. Wine for today....something unique grown under the Teide Volcano in the Canary Island. Trully unique wine, with grape varieties only seen on that area of Spain. Super fresh, and incredible acidity from those soils. The nose is so specific...really special wines.

The Ignios Orígenes (name of the brand) project arises in order to enhance and exploit the value of the more rooted grape varieties in the Canary Islands.

A unique project where the volcanic nature, mineral lands, the influence of the trade winds and the respectful treatment of an extraordinary raw materials, are some of the characteristics that define and offer a high quality to these very special wines. Varieties Canary, as Listán Negro, Marmajuelo or Baboso Negro, among others, are put in value through respect for the typicity of the volcanic soil and a field and winery work that is totally aimed at strengthening both the characteristics of the place where they settle their vines and the virtues that make them different. In March 2011, Ignios Orígenes began its activity following with the family tradition in the wine trade. Starting with the first of our vineyards, La Vizcondesa, a 15-year-old vineyards settled on loam soils to about 450 meters above the sea level, where we produce varieties Baboso Negro and Marmajuelo. Later we add a new property, varieties like Listán Negro and Listán Blanco of the Canary Islands, vineyards mostly exceeding the 40 year old seat in 2012. And finally it is in 2013 when we incorporate the latest wineyard, Casa Canales, of a sandy loam soils to 750 meters above the sea level, which we add to our project Vijariego Blanco, Vijariego Negro and Tintilla varieties.

This wine is a 100% Baboso Negro

After careful selection in the vineyard and winery, the grapes are 30% de-stemmed, lightly pressed and macerated in small bins for 48 hours. Afterward, the wines undergo a three week fermentation in stainless steel using native yeasts. Manuel punch downs are preformed daily. Upon completion of fermentation, the wine is lightly pressed and placed in 228 Liter French Oak barrels to undergo malolactic fermentation and age for 18 months. Lastly, it is clarified and bottled without filtration or cold stabilization.

Tasting Notes Brilliant ruby-garnet color with reflections of mahogany, the legs are exuberant, long and slow exhibiting good glycerol content. A rare warm perfumed nose with notes of black fruit, clove, black pepper, black licorice, and the smoke which comes from the volcanic soils of Tenerife. The palate is expansive and leaves a delightful taste of wet earth, mature fruits and packed with minerality.

A birthday in compelled-coronacation captivity was the perfect time to open my last 2002 Chateau Haut-Brion Bordeaux Blanc! Haut-Brion Blanc is a true unicorn wine! Chateau-Haut Brion has about 48 hectares of vineyards - less than 3 of which produce fruit for white wine. Indeed, there are only about 600 cases of Haut-Brion Blanc produced annually. . Despite the prodigious percentage of Sauvignon Blanc (78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Semillon for the 2002), Haut-Brion Blanc is not your typical porch pounder! While most Sauvignon Blanc spends minimal time in stainless steel before being released for immediate consumption, Haut-Brion Blanc is aged for 13-16 months in 100% new French oak barrels and will age incredibly well for decades! . The wine looked like liquid gold in my Zalto Universal stemware! The seductive, complex aromatics included mixed dried fruits (grapefruit, lime, lemon, honeydew melon and orange rinds), subtle honey notes, gravel, wax, and savory spices such as white pepper, anise and marjoram. . The palate is absolutely mind-blowing! Oxymoronically, it is richly ethereal. Initially it kisses your tongue softly then caressingly coats your entire palate. But a split second later, the intensity, tension and acidity begin to mount. At the 15-second mark, when the finish on even most good wines has faded, this finish is still intensifying - albeit with an indescribably silky, luxurious mouthfeel! In all, the complex finish lasts for at least a full minute (Yes, I used a stopwatch)! Just unreal! The perfect wine for a night of quiet, confined contemplation! . If you get a chance to try Haut-Brion Blanc, by all means do so! It is unquestionably one of the greatest white wines in the world! In addition, there are numerous outstanding Bordeaux Blanc options at lower price points for more regular consumption. Ruddy garnet, bricking hard with heavy sediment. Dusty velvet saloon couch, Mexican leather furniture, Borkum Riff wafting generously through the redwoods, broken weeds and the not-singular note of petrichor rising from an almost mountain-fresh Dial solidarity with mint and berry. And what about the fruit? Sure we love tertiary but fruit is the most important--young or old. Thin bright berry exposes itself gradually behind the leather and tobacco, growing in cadence and concentration until in lock-step with the mud and humus. Dark and brooding, but not even candied enough to compare to maraschino or amaretto, it is a solid--if not fanciful--blackberry and ripe plum, the grainy meat of pear granting texture. This thing has NOT had perfect provenance, by the way. I rescued it and a couple of its brothers from a liquor store--a pretty dark and cool one, but still--in about 2010 maybe? It's been with me ever since, but I don't have pitch-black 55-degree storage. My cellar is a bit more casual. Gorgeous and generous in the mouth. Gobs of lush berry, dark bitter specimens of mountain gooseberries and those seedy little hard boysenberries that stay low to the ground so the coyotes eat them. Effervescent acids prod at the fruit furtively, making noticeable props but is no contest for the massive fruit core of ridiculous black cherry and German chocolate thick with black walnut but provides a late-model blood-orange zest convincing you this wine is HALF the stated age. The fruit never fades, still-abusive tannins gently attempt coup and succeed to an extent, but not really. Their little playful tussle is one of the most charming things about this wine. To call this wine gorgeous would be an understatement. I think everyone gets the idea without me adding congratulatory and gushing postludes.
