This. Is my pride and joy. A gift for my dad, who played Zork with me when I was a kid, and with his dad when he was a kid. I designed this pattern myself and had a great time puzzling out how to hide the glow in the dark letters!
Buy the pattern here!

The Malifestro Quest is a good deal better than Forces of Krill, I think. Popping cover by Phil Parks, too. He did the cover for the first book as well, but this one is far better, I think. Dell Harris does the interiors, which are a step up from the first book as well, and seem to evoke Jim Holloway in a way I can’t quite put my finger on.
A hero is being held hostage by an evil wizard and the protagonists need to ransom him. There’s one path to success here and again, maybe two dozen endings. These are really on par with the CYOA and Endless Quest books, but with just a hint of something else thanks to their association with the Zork games, so I am not expecting Crown of Kings here. This is probably the Zorkiest of them, humor-wise. Things are pretty silly throughout. Even with the demon. Which, speaking of, bold cover choice with the pentagram during the Satanic Panic, right?

Look at me, drawing fanart of an over 20 years old franchise in 2024 when I could draw my current obsession of a show that released this year :)
I actually drew this a few years ago and felt like redrawing it. Look at my car, my car is amazing. I also have an old drawing of Marik with a motorcycle, so…

My past six attempts at playing Zork
Tumblr media
Got lost
Tumblr media
Got lost again, and the map wasn't making sense
Tumblr media
Gave up on map, tried new method, ineffective
Tumblr media
Refined previous method, introduced objectives, got very confused
Tumblr media
Attempt four and five I just tried a lot of things out in a further refined system while fighting the troll. Had a new objective which I did not achieve cause I was spending too much time trying stuff out. Game says I should re-read the manual, I never read it once in the first place so yeah I should
Will update after I work on midterms first

to zork, that is!! we're kicking off the FMVersary by playing one of my favourite FMV games of all time. it's completely goofy but it's got some really great stuff in there, and i'd love to show you. we're going to be playing a whole host of FMV games for the next little bit that i've played, but haven't shared on this stream — so look forward to that!
and come watch! only on, always on, Cable Two.

Kinda funky how "open it, read it" works. First, the automatic listing of things in the room description sets "it" to the mailbox. I enter two commands on one line. The first is parsed as "open mailbox", and the default "open container" handler sets "it" to the leaflet. Then the second command is parsed as "read leaflet", which causes an implicit take.
It makes sense when you think about it, but "open it, read it" on its own... not as much I think.

This just popped into my head but reader explaining to Zoro why he needs to bathe before they have sex because of the risk of a UTI and reader saying “if I get one because of you, then you are explaining to poor Chopper how I got it and why I need medication”
my pussy is built different so i think exposure therapy and cranberry juice would acclimate my microbiome over time 🤭
if he reeeeeally doesnt want to bathe you can also lick him clean w his tongue first!!!

The Cavern of Doom (1983) is the third Zork pick-your-path book. Most of the basic features are the same: two kids, a boy and a girl, explore the Great Underground Empire in a fairly linear quest suitable for young readers. It plays fast — you can probably solve it in about 30 minutes, it has one optimal path (I think), about 15 ways to die surprisingly grisly deaths and one trap for cheaters. Plot-wise, we’re exploring the titular cavern in hopes of finding the elves Max and Fred. As they are missing, so is a good deal of humor that was found in the previous book.
This one makes up for that lack by being the most like a Zork videogame in structure. You need to collect objects to solve challenges and you pick your way through a dungeoncrawl that, for the first time in the series, actually feels like the GUE to me. There are lots of grue. We even get to see what they look like, thanks to Dell Harris’ illustrations. I’m not sure how I feel about that broadly, but I do appreciate how toothy they are (I also have a hard time believing this Dell Harris is the same as the last book’s Dell Harris, to the point that I am wondering if it is a pen name). Phil Parks delivers a cover that is less awesome than the last volume’s but, I think, suits the book, and the larger Zork universe, quite nicely.
If you’re gonna get one Zork pick-your-path that isn’t tied to nostalgia for the cover, this is probably it.
