Why (as a Kataang shipper and in general) I don’t like Zutara shippers.

(I promise it’s NOT a Pro-Zutara post and it’s NOT an Anti-Kataang post).

LONG POST INCOMING, but if you have the time, please read. 😁

I’ve been thinking. I don’t hate Zutara.

No, I’m not being held hostage, and I know this kinda goes against my rather vitriolic and brutal response to Zutara shippers, but the ship itself is fine and I’m sure 95% of the shippers are decent people.

I really love Zuko and Katara’s friendship, it’s one of the most interesting unique dynamics of the show. It’s annoying when people say, they’re toxic, or they’re barely friends, or it’s a colonizer ship. Zuko and Katara weren’t toxic by the end of the show, they have a great relationship at the end, they were absolutely close friends, ready to lay down their lives for each other. Zuko WAS a colonizer, but he learned this line of thinking was wrong and actively sought to make the world a better place and save The Earth Kingdom.

That being said, Kataang is definitely indisputably the superior “ship”. We see the two start of a close friends from the get-go, they both have a lot of admiration and respect for one another, they grow to love each other dearly despite their flaws, they support each other constantly. And it’s abundantly clear that not only does Aang love Katara, but Katara loves Aang, some may it’s one-sided, but that’s objectively false, it’s painfully obvious they mean the world to each other, we see their bond get stronger, but they have a strong friendship and bond first and foremost and their romantic feelings comfortably exist within.

When I say Zutara shippers are annoying, entitled, toxic idiots, I’m specifically referring to the very vocal minority of people that seem to dominate ZK shipping discussions on Tumblr.

People like…

the-badger-mole who villainizes Aang and hates a fictional 12 year old to a ridiculous degree. Not to mention has so many objectively wrong takes.

longing-for-rain who villainizes Aang, downplaying his trauma, and is unempathetic to his emotions, but will excuses all of Zuko’s anger and outbursts cuz “muh enemies to lovers”.

eponastory who straight up downplays the very serious effects of genocide and the trauma it causes.

sokkastyles who actually thinks an imperialist play reflects the real Katara, (and yes they think the Zutara means “Zutara should’ve been canon, waah”).

zutarawasrobbed who straight up compared Aang to Ozai.

burst-of-iridescent who invalidates Katara trauma from bloodbending cuz she did it in front of Zuko once, but the evil Aang must’ve forced Katara to stop. 🙄

linnoya-writes who straight up infantizes Aang and adulifies Katara, and then that’s the audacity to put their garbage in the Kataang tag.

miss-sweetea-pie who makes mindless assumptions about people who like Aang, as though people ignore Aang’s faults and he never learns because he’s cute. Which is not only untrue, but completely ignores the fact people ignore and romanticize Zuko’s faults because to them he’s hot.

araeph who not only lies about interviewing Aaron Ehasz, but also says borderline racist stuff like this just to pathetically validate their non-canon ship (this is apparently what Sokka would gain from Zutara becoming a couple).

This idiot who acts like Aang forced Katara to comfort him and Katara apparently never treated Aang as an equal. Not to mention weirdly villainizing Zuko and Mai, because Mai didn’t coddle Zuko (like they claim Katara did to Aang) and Zuko became Fire Lord?

This hateful idiot, who is a straight up genocide denier.

And this racist weirdo who straight up writes slave fanfics about Katara being owned by Zuko. Ew.

It’s these types of people who suck. They’re the most delusional entitled moronic idiots who are fake A:TLA fans with no media-literacy who only care about a middle school ship, so they pathetically mischaracterize Aang, Katara, Zuko and Mai, and whine about Bryke not giving into their desires like the little bitches they are. Screw these guys.

That being said the ship itself isn’t bad, it’s just the vocal minority who ruin it for me. I love Zuko and Katara’s friendship, and I wish the great characters in this great series would stop being mischaracterized.

Again, what the fuck is with Zutarians and thinking 12 is the same as toddler and 14 is the same as fourty?

And gotta love how they went with the screenshot of Katara going from "Oh, I was just kissed" to "Wait, I'm literally on a potentially fatal mission now, focus" to try and make the scene look weird, yet you can still see the blush on her cheeks and her look is ambiguous at most instead of negative, like she's trying to make sense of it all - again, fitting considering the kiss happened on the day of the invasion, in which both her and Aang are at risk.

But ZK shippers like araeph, burst-of-iridescent, linnoya writes, zutarawasrobbed, sokkastyles and the-badger-mole are some of the most toxic moronic entitled and delusional ZK shippers on tumblr, they act like they care about Katara and are just disappointed fans of Avatar, when really they’re fake fans who are just mad their fanfiction did happen, so they come up with the most rancid takes about Aang and Katara that are objectively wrong and their mindless drones eat that garbage up. These people suck and tumblr would be better if they left forever and touched some grass.

it probably will be! i just don’t care enough about natla to be invested in it. glad I don’t need to worry about that until 2-3 years in the future.

i will say though - there’s as much evidence of zukka being endgame in the live action as there is for zutara. I remember one day going through her account and there were tons of zutara fanart. now it seems like she’s no longer publicly liking zutara stuff, but zukka instead. so at this moment either ship could happen. i know the new showrunner who liked a ton of zutara stuff got rid of all the zutara in her likes and retweets before going private.

I've talked about this on twitter, but the way canon shippers defend their ships with their whole chest is hilarious. You're that defensive because zutara is mentioned? Why? You HAVE canon, you have EVERYTHING, yet you still care about what we ship? It's giving insecurity to be honest. It's been fifteen years and you'd think they'd get it through their heads that zutara fans don't give a flying FUCK about what's canon.

She shook her head angrily, unable to contain herself any longer. "No, I don't think you understand, Aang. I decided to end that man's life today. I did that. Not Zuko, not Sokka, me. And if you can't handle that then you can just kindly fuck off!"

She let out a bitter chuckle, "Oh, I think I do," She stepped closer to the airbender so that they were face to face, toe to toe, "And I won't repeat it."

He was breathing harder now, his eyes wide, unable to believe what she was saying. She was perfect. Katara was always perfect. So innocent and kind. So why was he seeing her so differently now? Why was she acting this way?

"Katara, I think Zuko has corrupted you somehow. This isn't like you—"

She clenched her jaw, pressing her finger into his chest, "Oh, no no no—we are not doing this again. You and I? We are not the same. We've never been the same! You can't tell me how to live my life just because you don't agree with it! I ended that man's life because he killed my mother! I was owed that! And I'll be damned if I let anyone else tell me otherwise!"

"And if you think for a second that I am gonna let you slander my best friend then you've got another thing coming! Zuko was there for me, he's always been there for me! So why won't you? Why can't you support me on the one thing that would give me closure?"

"Katara, the monks always say to—"

"I don't care what the monks said, Aang! I am not a monk! I am Katara from the Southern Water Tribe. I am not you! Why don't you understand that?"

"Katara–"

"I'm sorry, Aang," She gulped, swallowing the lump in her throat, "But if you're going to shame me for killing my mother's murderer then I don't think we can be friends anymore."

"zk is mostly katara-centric" first off, so what? And secondly, we love them both equally. Katara gets more hate than any of the other characters. As a brown girl, she can't get too emotional. She can't bloodbend because then she'll be "evil", and she can't be nuanced or too complex.

Outside of zks and the occasional Katara stan, who else is gonna ride and die for her character?? Casual fans who don't even remember what happened in the show?? Antis?? Just shut up already, you sound like a broken record.

it absolutely pissed me off. Katara showed kindness to Zuko, and he betrayed her trust, caused the death of her best friend, sent a killer after them - she has every right to be angry at him! the way they turn her feeling of legitimate anger into "Katara is confused because Zuko is like an ex for her whom she still loves…" is a real classic misogyny, because a woman cannot feel sincere disgust for a handsome man, she just pretends because she is secretly in love with him.

And let's pretend for a second that they WERE a thing, that she DID have feelings for Zuko, that he WAS like an ex to her - how does that negate her anger and means she's just "confused"?

It's still a betrayal. Hell, it'd make what Zuko did WAY worse, because even though what he did in canon was bad, at least he and Katara just had a ceasefire, not a legit, meaningful bond (be it platonic or romantic) so you can at least understand how a DEEPLY patriotic prince, raised by a deeply dysfunctional family and in a imperialist nation that is waging war for a century, could come to the conclusion that he owes literally nothing to this borderline stranger that he only had negative interactions with until that point, especially not against his family/nation.

That just doesn't work if they're supposedly deeply involved, because Katara doesn't have the years-long bond with Zuko, the life experience, and the troubled, bloody past uncle Iroh had that made him, naturally, forgive his nephew the second he showed genuine remorse in a way that made perfect narrative sense.

If Katara did have feelings for Zuko, she would have taken even longer to forgive him than she did in canon, as she fucking should.

But God forbid the pretty girl is mad at the pretty boy, gives him consequences when he screws up, and needs some time to process things and only THEN forgive him. She needs to be a doormat and accept his apology immediately.

In fact, he shouldn't have to apologize in the first place. She should just magically know that he really is sorry because he's her special pretty boy.

Guys..

The original script adds so much context for a lot of scenes, but this one?

Zuko didn’t just start sleeping next to Katara because he wanted to be close to her. He also wanted to be close enough to protect her from another ambush and bomb attack.

And Katara could sleep with a smile on her face because she knew Zuko would be there to protect her. Zuko gave her the opportunity to sleep without being alert 100% of the time for the first time in probably forever…
