Should’ve Been You (Pt. 04 of 05)

Pairing: Eric Coulter X OC | Word Count:1.370

Summary: Victoria has been in love with her instructor, Four, since she first met him. But now, a few years later, he officialized his relationship with an ex-Abnegation girl, Tris, from last year initiation. Victoria has no reaction but to cry her heart out, but lucky for her, Eric is more than willing to help her forget her crush.

I don’t really know where I’m going until I reach the roof. The wind messes with my hair when I open the door and I smile.

“What do you want to talk about?” I ask him, resting my back against the wall, trying to fix my hair, but the wind doesn’t help.

“Don’t you remember?”

“No.” I roll my eyes when a strand of my hair flies over my face.

Eric suddenly reaches out to move that strand away. It’s weird how his fingers linger on my skin, but I like it. I wish I had fallen for him instead. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt so much.

“What are you thinking about?” His voice is so soft, so low I barely hear it.

“Nothing…” My voice fades as I stare into his icy blue eyes. “I wish things were different. I don’t want this whole thing with Four to hurt me anymore, but it still does.”

“I had an idea.” He smirks, walking away suddenly. “Meet me on the third gate in one hour.”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

As I walk to the gate Eric told me to, I can’t help but think about everything I know about him. How he never pours sugar on his coffee, how he still loves blue even though he can’t wear it. And how he secretly wears dark blue T-shirts when his alone in his apartment. All these things keep coming to my mind and I make a list. I never stopped to notice all the time I’ve spent with Eric since my initiation was over when he offered me a job by his side. All the sleepless nights in his apartment with piles of papers to organize and dozens of problems to solve. I should definitely fall for him.

“You’re late.” He states when and I roll my eyes.

Eric guides me through the city. I can’t remember the last time I just walked on these streets, without patrolling or chasing someone. It has its beauty, I can’t deny it. I’m surprised to find out he’s taking me to the building of my first mission as a Dauntless when he asked me to work with him.

“Why here?” I ask when we get to the roof. From one roof to another, but this is way higher. “Do you remember? My first mission was here when a bunch of Factionless kidnapped an Abnegation girl.”

“I do. That was when I noticed all your potential.” He gestures for the horizon and my gaze follows it. “The sunset. It’s beautiful to watch from here.”

I giggle, my eyes on the sky as the clouds change colors. From white to orange to pink. “Big bad Dauntless leader, Eric Coulter, watching the sunset with me.”

“Don’t push it.”

“I am not.” I punch his arm playfully and he punches me back. Then we just stand there, both our eyes on the sky as it gets darker and darker. “Thank you.” I grab his arms, holding onto him. “For everything you’ve been doing for me.”

“No matter what, you’ll always have me.” Eric sounds so honest, so kind, that I have to show him how important he is to me. So I hug him, my arms embracing his midsection. Eric hugs me back immediately and it feels so good. I never hugged him. Well, I did when he showed up on my apartment and I freaked out. But now it’s different. I feel safe. Physically and emotionally safe.

“It’s getting dark,” I mutter after a while, still on his arms. “Where now?”

“What about the Training Room? For the old times.”

I nod before following him to the elevator. Twenty minutes later Eric is unlocking the Transfer’s Training Room. The time I spent here was chaotic, but I have to admit I had some fun. “Wanna play with the knives?”

“You first.” He gestures at the target and I take my place. Eric takes his time choosing the knives, even though they’re all the same. He always does that to provoke me, but I just roll my eyes. “I admire your bravery, initiate.”

“It didn’t scare me then and it doesn’t scare me now.” I smile as he throws the first knife at me, just above my head.

“I know.” Three knives and I just keep smiling. “I still admire you.”

“My turn.” As we switch places, I smile when he rests his back against the target. But when I’m about to aim the first knife, someone opens the door, making me roll my eyes. It’s Four and his girlfriend again.

“What do you want?”

“We need to talk, Eric. You both took a drastic decision without telling me.”

“And?” Shrugging my shoulders, I throw my first knife at the target, hitting the target just beside his head. The man doesn’t even flinch.

“Would you act like an adult?” Tris speaks up for the first time, arms crossed.

“You talk and I hear Four’s voice. Is it a trick or just magic?” I’m aiming again, but Four comes and takes the knife from my hands.

“You don’t have the right to do that.” Eric barks at Four before I can speak for myself. He leaves the target, coming to stand by my side.

“Chill, Eric.”

“What’s going on between the two of you?” Four gestures at both of us, what makes Tris roll her eyes. What the hell is wrong with her?

“Look, Four. I have to meet with Cristina and I’m already late. I’m sure you can deal with them.” With this award sentence, she turns on her heels and leaves.

I give Eric a meaningful look before shrugging my shoulders. “About our earlier decision.” I begin, moving the box of knives away so I can seat on the table. “I want to watch their training closely. Dauntless-born and Transfers. And Tris sucks as your assistant.” I tried not to say it, but the words came out anyway.

“What’s happening, Victoria? I know you and you’re not like this.”

“I’m sorry. You know me?”

“Yes. I was your instructor and I watched as you changed from a scared Candor girl to a fierce Dauntless soldier. I know you.”

“What’s my favorite color?” I ask, my legs hanging from the table.

“Pink.”

“Shit. He’s right.” I mutter to Eric, who sighs.

“Ask him something less obvious.” He gestures at my shirt, with the Dauntless symbol painted in dark pink. “You wear dark shades of pink very often. It’s like your personal mark.”

“What should I ask then?”

“Is she a morning person?” Eric questions him, his eyes not leaving mine.

“How could I possibly know that?”

“How could you possibly know that?” I burst out, kicking Eric’s arm.

“Because I’m the one knocking on your door at 5 am when shit happens.” Then I remember it. Whenever there are some urgent mission or important files, Eric makes me the favor of waking me up early in the morning. “Your mood is the worst. You’re grumpy, rude, and overreacts about everything.”

“Are you in love with each-”

“Hey! Victoria!” Someone yells and my attention is dragged away from Four’s words. It’s a Transfer, the same who was sparring with Megan earlier. “Can I ask for an advice?”

“Sure.” I’m more than thankful for leaving Eric and Four behind. With my heart pounding against my chest, I follow the boy outside. As we walk through the halls, I remember someone calling him Nate. “What kind of advice you need?”

“None. I was walking by and when I heard Four’s words I thought you needed an excuse to leave.”

That makes me smile. “You’re a very smart kid.”

“Thank, mom.” He rolls his eyes and smirks. “You could be the mom and Eric could be the dad. You’re the gentle one, let’s make that clear.”

“I don’t even know how to answer that.”

“Then don’t.” Quickening his pace, Nate slowly leaves me behind. “See you tomorrow, mom. Bye.”

Sighing, I wave at him even though he can’t see it. Why is everything pushing me towards Eric suddenly? I have my own weird feelings and now there is the outside world working on it. Well, guess this will keep me awake at night.
