Working students deserve unemployment benefits
I have worked for 7 years with no spans of unemployment until COVID-19. I’ve also gone to college for 7 years while balancing a work schedule (sometimes full-time, sometimes part-time). I will finally be graduating next month (with no real ceremony). I was denied unemployment benefits because I am a full-time student and, therefore, cannot be a full-time employee. I personally know someone who worked 4 hours a week and is receiving full unemployment benefits. I, on the other hand, worked 25 hours a week while also balancing a full-time class schedule and will be receiving nothing. Does anyone else see a problem with this? College students go to school to gain the knowledge to join the workforce, yet I’m being punished for being able to work AND go to school at the same time? Working students deserve unemployment benefits, too, especially if we need the funds to pay our bills. The unemployment benefit requirements need to be revised during COVID-19.
