On 17 December, 1968, 20-year-old Barbara Mackle was at a Decatur, Georgia, hotel with her mother, Jane. She had been suffering from influenza, as was most pupils from the Emory University. Her mother had picked her up and taken her to a hotel to get over the sickness.
During the evening, Gary Stephen Krist knocked on the hotel door, claiming that Barbara’s boyfriend had been in a road traffic accident. As the women let him him, Krist and his accomplice, Ruth Eisemann-Schier, dragged the two women to the ground and placed a chloroform-soaked rag over their faces. The duo then bound and gagged Jane before bundling Barbara into their car. They drove Barbara to a remote area in Gwinnett County where there was a pre-dug trench. Inside the trench was a fibreglass-reinforced box fitted with an air pump, a lamp and water and food laced with sedatives. Barbara was forced into the box.
Gary and Ruth demanded a $500,000 ransom from Barbara’s father, who was a wealthy land developer. The ransom drop was arranged, however two policemen driving by spooked the duo, leading them to flee on foot.  When their car was searched, the found a photograph of Barbara inside the box, holding a sign which read “Kidnapped.” A second ransom drop was arranged and Ruth called the police, giving directions to where they could find Barbara. After spending three days trapped underground, Barbara was rescued.
Both Gary and Ruth were soon apprehended, with Ruth being the first women to appear on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted. Ruth was paroled after four years while Gary was paroled after ten years.

Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious cult based near San Diego, California whose members believed that suicide would allow them to leave their bodily “containers” and enter an alien spacecraft behind the Hale-Bopp comet.
On March 26, 1997, following a then-anonymous tip, police entered a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe and discovered 39 victims of a mass suicide. 21 women and 18 men of varying ages were all found lying deceased on their backs in identical black outfits and brand new Nikes, with no noticeable signs of trauma. Each member had in their pocket $5.75. The $5 was said to cover vagrancy fines while members were out on jobs, while the quarters were to make phone calls. Once dead, a living member would pose the body so that it lay neatly in bed, with faces and torsos covered by a square purple cloth.
The cult was led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Lu Nettles. In 1975, the two persuaded a group of 20 people to abandon their families and possessions and move to Colorado, where they promised that an extraterrestrial spacecraft would take them to the “kingdom of heaven.” Nettles and Applewhite explained that human bodies were merely containers that could be abandoned in favor of a higher physical existence.
In October 1996, Applewhite rented a large home in Rancho Santa Fe, explaining to the owner that his group was made up of Christian-based angels. Applewhite advocated sexual abstinence, and several male cult members followed his example by undergoing castration operations.
To commit suicide, members took phenobarbital mixed with apple sauce or pudding and washed it down with vodka. Additionally, they secured plastic bags around their heads after ingestion to induce asphyxiation.
Two surviving members still maintain the group's website, although it has barely been altered since the suicide event.

The Cannibal of Ziębice
Karl Denke was born February 11, 1860 in Silesia, Prussia, now Kalinowice Górne. Though he was born into a wealthy family of farmers, Denke ran away from home at the age of 12 to what is now Ziębice, Poland.
After his father died and he inherited a sum of money, Denke settled on Statwowa Street and ran a shop where he sold meat, which some now speculate was human meat. He was known as a good man around town, played organ at the local church and was referred to as “Papa Denke” in his community.
In 1903, Denke killed for the first time when he murdered Ida Launer. In 1909, he killed 25-year-old Emma Sander, whose murder was blamed on Denke’s co-worker Eduard Trautmann until Denke was finally captured for his crimes. Denke chose to predominantly kill travelers and the homeless. He kept a ledger recording his murders and it’s likely the leather products he also sold were made of human skin.
On December 20, 1924, a transient named Vincenz Olivier escaped Denke, who he attempted to kill with an axe and slashed his scalp. Denke was arrested but hanged himself 2 days later in his holding cell. When his home was finally searched, police found a large number of body parts in his home, suggesting his body count was between 50-60, if not more.
Among the parts found were:
- 16 femurs
- 4 pairs of elbow bones
- 7 radii
- 2 shoulder blades
- 120 toes
- 65 feet
- 5 ribs
- Human flesh found in curing jars
Friedrich Pieutrusky, the acting head of the Institute of Legal Medicine in Breslau, went on to say: “[In a pot] were found numerous pieces of human skin and parts of the aorta in a gelatinous mass. A bowl on the table in his room was filled with amber colored fat, that appeared to be human. Biological test gave a weak-positive result for the presence of human protein. In the shed, in which the meat pieces were found, was also a barrel full of bones that were cleaned of tendons, muscles etc. that most probably have been priorly cooked…We were able to declare that the bones sent to us, belonged to at least eight people…Among Denke’s suspenders, three pairs were made of human skin…”

The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel
Anneliese Michel was born September 21, 1952, to a devoutly religious family. At 16, she began suffering seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy, however prescribed drugs didn't help.
Within 3 years, she became depressed and heard voices that told her she was 'damned' and 'would rot in hell'. She even grew an aversion to churches and crucifixes. On a Christian pilgrimage to San Damiano, a family friend concluded that Anneliese was possessed. "[She] was unable to enter the shrine. She approached it with the greatest hesitation, then said that the soil burned like fire and she simply could not stand it...She looked at the people who were kneeling...and it seemed to her that while praying they were gnashing their teeth...she had to avert her glance from the picture of Christ...she could no longer look at medals or pictures of saints; they sparkled so immensely that she could not stand it." - Father Alt
Her family consulted a priest about an exorcism, though the priests declined and suggested medicine. Anneliese soon began growling, throwing things, self-injuring and drinking her own urine. She even ate insects, coal, and once bit the head off of a dead bird. Despite taking numerous neuroleptic medications, her symptoms persisted.
In 1975, Bishop Josef Stangl allowed priest Arnold Renz to exorcise. Father Renz performed the first session on September 24, 1975. In total, 67 exorcisms were performed, twice a week, for up to 4 hours each time.
On July 1, 1976, Anneliese died at home from malnutrition and dehydration after undergoing self-starvation for a year during her exorcisms. She weighed 68 pounds at the time of her death and had broken knees from continuously kneeling to pray.
After an investigation, it was determined that Anneliese's death could've been prevented. The state charged her parents, Father Alt, and Father Renz with negligent homicide.
During the trial, tapes of 42 exorcisms were played. In them, Anneliese speaks as a demon and identifies as Lucifer, Cain, Judas, Hitler and Nero. Anneliese's parents, Father Alt, and Father Renz were all found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 6 months in jail.

The Jamison Family Disappearance
Bobby Jamison, his wife Sherilynn, and their 6-year-old daughter Madyson seemed to be living normal lives until October 8, 2009, when they vanished from Eufaula, Oklahoma.
A few days later, The Jamison’s truck was found abandoned an hour away in Latimer County, Oklahoma. Inside the truck police found the Jamisons’ IDs, wallets, phones, $32,000 in cash and the family dog who was malnourished, but alive. These items left behind led police to believe that the family didn’t leave on their own accord.
Given that both Bobby and Sherilynn were both on disability at the time they went missing, police were puzzled at the amount of cash in the car and suspected involvement with drug dealing.
As police dug further into their activities before the disappearance, things became more strange. Inside their home, police found a shipping container that had written on it, ‘3 cats killed to date buy people in this area … Witches don’t like there black cat killed’ (sic). Bobby had also visited his pastor on multiple occasions and said that ‘3 or 4 ghosts’ were living on his roof. He even asked the pastor if he could obtain ‘special bullets’ to kill the spirits. It’s also been noted that Sherilynn had recently purchased The Satanic Bible. Along with acting strangely, friends said that Bobby and Jamison had lost large amounts of weight before they went missing. The most chilling discovery, however, came when security camera footage from the family’s home was found to show the family packing up the car before leaving. Though the entire video has yet to be released, the footage shows the family taking multiple trips between the car and home, appearing to be in a sort of trance-like state.
On November 15, 2013, the skeletal remains of the family were found by hunters less than 3 miles away from where the truck was found abandoned. Because the bodies were so badly decomposed, cause of death could not be determined.
Theories surrounding the deaths range from murder-suicide, to a drug deal gone wrong, to possible cult activity, however no theories have been confirmed. The case remains unsolved.

The Internet’s First Serial Killer
In the early 80s, John “J.R.” Robinson, worked hard to maintain the appearance of a family man. A father to four, J.R. became a Scout Leader, baseball coach, Sunday school teacher and a board member for a local charity. It was around this time, however, that J.R. also joined an S & M cult called The International Council of Masters, where he participated by luring victims to the cult’s gatherings for sex and torture.
In 1984, J.R. hired 19-year-old Paula Godfrey as a sales rep for a shell company he created. After she told her family she was being sent for “job training”, she was never heard from again.
In 1985, J.R. lured Lisa Stasi and her 4-month-old daughter from a women’s shelter in Kansas City with the promise of a job. After a few days, J.R. contacted his brother and sister-in-law who were looking to adopt and told them there was a baby available whose mother had committed suicide. After paying J.R. $5,500, they were given Lisa’s baby, Tiffany. Lisa was never seen again.
In 1993, J.R. hired prison librarian Beverly Bonner. After she had her alimony checks forwarded to a Kansas P.O. box, she disappeared and has not been seen since, though her checks were cashed for several years.
By the mid 90s, J.R. began using Internet chatrooms to find victims. Using the handle “Slavemaster”, J.R. met 45-year-old Sheila Faith. In 1994, J.R. flew Sheila and her 15-year-old daughter, Debbie, to Kansas City where they immediately disappeared, despite cashing their pension checks the following 7 years.
In 1999, J.R. met Izabela Lewicka, a 21-year-old Polish immigrant, who signed a 115-item “slave contract” that gave J.R. total control over her life. She soon disappeared.
The following year, J.R. was eventually arrested for sexual battery. When police searched his farm, they discovered two women’s bodies in chemical drums. After his storage units were also searched, three more bodies were found, belonging to Beverly Bonner, Sheila Faith and Debbie Faith.
After the longest criminal trial in Kansas history, J.R. was eventually sentenced to life without parole.
