But what was the specific Habs comment you couldn’t make on that post about haunted narratives???
tbh i said “specific” but now i’ve thought about it for two minutes, and really if i’m honest the whole damn franchise and every player who plays for it now and always is haunted by the legacies and expectations set down by people who are not there anymore. whether literally dead or just metaphorically “dead” (ie retired or traded), they linger in the story long long afterwards. of course centre bell is also haunted in a very definite literal “yeah p sure there’s Something Else here and i can feel them watching us from the rafters” sense, ‘old forum ghosts’ and whatnot, but also like. it’s the fact that every story the habs will ever tell starts with someone standing in the various shadows of people who are, one way or another, already gone. wearing their numbers or skating beneath their banners or playing the position they once played. living up to a legacy of cups and championships, or even just trying to fill a void left in the fanbase’s hearts. always drawing comparison, always invoking someone else’s name, regardless of if you want or try to. with one hundred and twelve years of franchise history you are always standing where someone else once stood or standing on someone’s grave. you can even hear it in the franchise motto, taken from an old wwi battlefield poem and emblazoned on the locker room walls; everyone forgets the line that comes after the borrowed bit in the original, after the part that sits there underneath the portraits of the legends and implores take up our quarrel with the foe, to you from failing hands we throw- the torch! be yours to hold it high, if ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep- hockey is at its heart always always a narrative, and this story has a century of ghosts woven in deep at its very seams. this is both the absolute best and absolute worst thing about the montreal canadiens.

Hat tip to this Athletic article from six years ago for having a solid photo of the PLAAAAAAY HOCKEEEEEEEEY! cover story
(The Athletic piece itself is also really cute, it's mostly about Chantal, but look at those goobers. I am dying.)

cm97 smythe they really are screaming in his face you will always be the best player on the ice but it will never be enough to count. like to lose in such a devastating way after dragging this team back from the dead over and over and immediately after be awarded a trophy for being the 'MVP' while the trophy he actually wants is elsewhere in the building just out of his reach. how much can I yell about this

there’s something so admirable and poetic about girls on here who are obsessed with hockey men. like you took the sport with the least face visibility and most indiscriminate injuries by sharp hard objects and you thought this too is poetry. even blonde men with weird beards and no teeth can feel love

Hockey commentators when they see a player who’s under 6 feet: a baby. Just a little man. Simply a teeny-tiny puck boy. How does he even get over the boards. Look at his feetsies dangling when he sits on the bench. What a courageous wee lad, to be out there with everyone else, inspirational
