we all need to start appreciating peridot stevenuniverse more for what she did for us. it would be easier to say what she DIDN'T do honestly. she's autistic. she's silly. she's sad and little. she's an overworked i. t. guy. she's a saturday morning cartoon villain. she's aroace. she's gay. she yelled at her boss and immediately had a mental breakdown. she's both a victim of and perpetuates the oppressive society she was raised in. she has to unlearn her conceptions of other people's worth and her own worth so she stops hurting other people and hurting herself. she achieves this in part through robot fights. she's hyperfixated on a canadian soap opera. she draws shipping charts. she's nonbinary. she can never go home again. she doesn't want to go home again. she went from believing literally anything was a weapon that could be used to harm her to farming and making art and music with her best friend in a barn. she's like 3 feet tall. she has a twitter account where she talks in all caps constantly. she's green and her hair is a triangle literally what can't she do.

One thing I, personally, can't relate to when discussing BG3 companions: not loving each and every single one of these little weirdos.

Obviously, Astarion's my favorite (gestures at, well, everything on my blog), but I love all of the companions SO much. They're each so unique, so flawed, so painfully relatable.

Now, a quick disclaimer: by all means, these aren't the only or even the best reasons to appreciate these characters, but they're some of my personal favorites!

Some reasons to love them...

Astarion, even against two centuries of torture and trauma, for breaking that cycle of abuse and learning to become his own man.

Gale, despite her reigns on his past, on his power, for going against his goddess's wishes and living on to rectify his mistakes, rather than dying for them.

Karlach, even after everything she's ever done, after finding no catharsis in the act of revenge, for keeping her head, her ax, and her hopes high.

Lae'zel, despite realizing that her entire reason for living is a lie, for fighting on to find new meaning and build a world she'd be proud to fight for.

Shadowheart, even after finding out that her very existence is a lie, for stumbling forth into a new world, one where her devotion is hers to share.

Wyll, despite his deep, undying love for his father, for learning that he needn't sacrifice everything for the ones he loves, he has those who love him in turn.

Halsin, who for all intents and purposes doesn't need to bother with all of this, for caring enough about people, about you, to do whatever he can to help.

Minthara, after being brainwashed, betrayed, destroyed, for ultimately rising from the ashes of herself to follow and support you in anything and everything.

Jaheira, who had all but given up on passing the torch, who after love and loss decided to go out fighting, for trusting you, a kindred spirit to let her rest.

Minsc, with not a single thought behind those eyes, for understanding friendship and loyalty so deeply, that he joins your crew faithfully on Jaheira's words.

It's been a long time since I loved every single one of my companions in a game like this (maybe DA2?), and I'm so weirdly grateful to them for helping me understand myself better.

Anyway, I just think they're all super neat, interesting characters. You definitely don't need to love them all, but I certainly think it's a blast!

Karlach: 164 mentions

Gale: 146 mentions

Methods were simply going to the patch pages and CTRL+F-ing characters names.

As you can see, Wyll doesn't even break 100 mentions! He's second only to Durge, who isn't even a recruitable companion in-game! Looking only at recruitable companions, Wyll is dead last!

Do with this information what you will! It just makes me upset! Ideal solution is next patch is just a dedicated Wyll Overhaul imo lol

I hate how whenever we try to talk about Wyll’s lack of content due to racism, stans of other companions will hijack the conversation and act their favorite characters are treated even remotely the same. Like I keep seeing people say Shadowheart and Gale are “also neglected in comparison to Astarion” when it’s just so blatantly not true. SH literally has the same amount of hours of content as Astarion at 12 hours (which no one ever likes to talk about for some reason) and basically all of Act 2 is about her, and Gale maybe has one hour less of content than Astarion does and same with Lae’zel (both of them still have around 11 hours,) meanwhile Wyll is the ONLY origin companion with less than 10 hours of content. He has less than Karlach who was added in way later than him. It is so frustrating!

SO TRUE!! And it is CONSTANT. I peeked into the Larian discord server today and while I did see several people asking for more Wyll content (Lovely!) I saw someone else saying "Astarion feels forgotten in this patch :(" Like come on.... Literally seconds before responding to this I just responded to an anon asking what I meant about Wyll having nothing new because he "just got 3 animations" or whatever as if that's the issue here. When my friend first played and romanced Wyll on her first run, she posted her disappointment about his lack of romance content and "well met" dialogue on reddit and a lot of people shot her down and said he had the same amount as others which is just categorically false and was later proven so with data. I don't know why this is so hard for people to accept when it's so easy to look at the breakdown of how many hours, scenes, and so on everyone has and see that there is a problem. If they took two seconds to search for Wyll's name in the various patch notes they'd see how little any of these issues are ever addressed. I wouldn't be surprised if all the other characters had even MORE content than him now with how much Larian keeps tweaking them and adding things on :/ I am a certified Galemancer and I would gladly never get a drop of new content again if that effort was spent bringing Wyll up to the level of the others (as it honestly should be!!) and I am just baffled at people asking for new things with other companions or Raphael romance or whatever else when one of the main characters of the game (and only black companion) has been shafted left and right. Ridiculous...

As a certified Gortash hater and official Wyll romancer, this has been the hardest day of my fucking life.

like. Wyll is a protagonist. He’s on the cover of the game front and center. And they undercooked him in the first place writing-wise. and then doubled down on it six times in a row. embarrassing

Disappointed in the developments regarding Wyll in this recent patch. He deserves just as much love as the rest of the companions, and his story deserves to be told. For those who are stuck in situations because it was their only choice for survival, for those who try desperately to do the right thing even if it’s detrimental to themself purely because it’s the right thing to do. For those who want that storybook romance, that slow burn love, for those on the asexual spectrum or the aromantic spectrum or even those who don’t want something as sexual as what you get with the other companions. Just because he is not as “popular” or didn’t have as explosive a fan base as companions like Astarion does not mean he doesn’t deserve the same work put into him and his story.

We know why he actually isn’t getting the same treatment. Do better Larian.

Wyll got like 3 new animations what do you mean no new Wyll content?

And so did everyone else, but that's the problem. Nothing has been done to address the content disparity between him and other characters, which is what we are referring to when we say 'he got no new content'. We mean that nothing has been done to bring him up to the same level of content as other characters. He is the only character without a single romance greeting even 6 patches later. He is the only character who, in the epilogue, you can neither give a hug or kiss to (which negates the "they ran out of time" argument for why he has less content, though let's be real, that was already negated by them not fixing any of the issues after endlessly tweaking and adding new lines to Astarion and NPCs for 6 patches). He is the only character with 2 romance scenes instead of 3+ like everyone else has. He is the only character without a sex scene (or at least an equivalent non-sexual romance scene to fill that gap). He is the only character to not be able to make his own choice in the climax of his story. He has the least reactivity of of the main origin companions, both as a companion and as an Origin. Larian has continued to add brand new things (outside of the things everyone gets such as kisses and epilogues, the latter of which they dropped the ball on with him for the aforementioned reason) on to other main origin characters who already have a wealth of content or on to NPCs, yet they have thus far neglected to fill in the gaps in his story, romance, and overall integration into the world. He also remains riddled with bugs, many of which never get addressed. In Regards to Wyll's Content Disparity

Fandom: Baldur's Gate 3

I don't think some people realize how it feels to be a black gamer in the context of Wyll's content disparity. Intentionally racist or not, the fact that he continues to be overlooked and disregarded by the Devs is really disheartening. As a black gamer (and please note I am speaking for myself and do not represent the wider black gaming community, don't read this as that) I feel just as overlooked and disregarded as Wyll currently is.

Wyll is a great character. I absolutely adore Wyll. But he feels under baked. And this sucks because you see a pattern in media where black characters (especially black female characters, but that's a conversation for a different day) aren't as fleshed out as white characters. They aren't given the same love and care as white or white coded characters and, therefore, the fandom doesn't reciprocate with love and care towards the black or black coded characters. So of course, this reads as people not caring about them, so the writers don't bother to fix them or give them more.

It is a vicious cycle that we see often where they make Wyll, butdon't put as much work into him, so the fandom doesn't like him as much, so they don't think they need to put more work into him. They put more love and care into the white/white-coded characters because that is what the predominantly white fandom wants.

But as they do that, the black fans and the fans that enjoy Wyll as a character are ignored. Their voices are drowned out by the majority and I cannot tell y'all how shitty of a feeling that is. As a black woman, I have constantly been talked over, ignored, had my ideas repeated by a white person and have them take the credit, etc. So seeing Wyll and Wyll fans being ignored, talked over, white counterparts getting the attention sucks.

I get enough of that shit in real life, I don't want to have to deal with that in all my fucking hobbies.

As a black gamer, this makes me feel as if I don't belong in this fandom. It makes me feel like the devs and the writers don't want me in this fandom. It makes me feel like I'm not welcome to play this game, that I'm not welcome to like this character over others, that I'm not able to bring my experiences as a black woman and a black gamer to this game because the main black character is treated like they don't matter. It makes me feel like the writers didn't want to put in the work for this black man and felt like no one would notice or care. That no one but black folks would mind and who cares what black folks are saying?

Again, this is all my opinion and its a bit rambly. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this that really is a culmination of various things involving being a blerd and black geek in predominantly white fandoms.

But I think it's important to recognize that people are impacted by this and it sucks for a lot of black folks in white dominant spaces to continue to have to fight for crumbs at the table during Black History Month in 2024. We should have good, fleshed out characters, that are respected and cared for by their creators and by the fandom at large. I really hope Larian puts in the work for Wyll and a lot more people can see how cool a character he really is. He deserves the same amount of love and care as the other origin companions.
