Sixth Form|CAPE Exams (A Levels)|Results Day
This is going to be a long one guys so be ready.
Where should I start? Okay. This year was my first year of doing a levels. I came into sixth form extremely motivated. Like I was bubbly and so ready to work. Last year summer I downloaded all of my syllabi and found notes for every single one of my topics I wold be doing in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science and Communication Studies. I also sourced notes from people who did the subjects before me.

First term started I had a whole new work ethic and mentality. I had a goal (4 ones) and I wanted to achieve it. I was doing my homework and assignments on time, checking in on and harassing teachers, making sure I understood things, writing notes after school every evening, gathering information for my school based assessments (labs for bio and chem which goes to our final grade and research projects for comm and EVS. They also go towards our final grade), and just trying to stay on top of things. This term was when I was most motivated. I also discovered the world of studytube and studyblr in this term and I really grew attached to Unjaded Jade specifically.
Christmas vacation came around and I personally set a goal for this time period: Finish the syllabi for my subjects on my own and write the notes for ALL of my subjects. Start revising for your final exams. I was able to do this goal.. mostly. I finished my Biology and Chemistry notes which I really enjoyed doing by using online resources, youtube, and my texts. I finished up until module 3 in EVS (I hated module 3 it was about natural resources) and communication studies.. I didnt touch because I had a dislike for the subject.. s of today Monday August the 13th, I slight regret this decision. However I started studying all three of my other subjects. Let me also clarify Comm Studies is mandatory and I did not choose to do this subject. See I actually enjoyed the subjects I chose :) Which helped in me studying for them. In this time period I wrote so much my hand writing started to improve and it amazed me. Sadly I havent written in months (since May.. my last written exam) and it probably regressed lol.
The first half of term 2 I was still highly motivated. Same route as the first term. However the homework and assignments became overwhelming and I was having trouble studying. Midterm was coming up so I neglected studying for my exams and instead studied for tests at school and focused on my SBAs, homework and assignments. After midterms, my motivation was at 0. I felt extremely lazy and had no will power to go on. I couldnt care about anything and I stopped studying for weeks at a time. I still managed to do great in tests because I knew my information and just had to recap before tests. This term I started being tutored (I didnt need it but it was to ensure I was going in the right direction and to also get tips.. Im glad I went because now I really love my tutors.)
Easter vacation rolled around and my brain was screaming for a break.. Bu I couldn’t entirely. I sorted out my revision time timetable until my very last exam (this timetable was eventually disregarded and not followed and I did what I felt like doing... lol.. whoops.) I finally finished my evs notes and Did some communication studies notes. I didn’t finish them because by this time.. I really.. really hated Comm. My teacher was out sick in the second term and it took us really long to get a replacement. I tried teaching myself it but the layout of our syllabus is extremely confusing. Also our long paper literally does not correspond with our syllabus IMO???? I don’t know how to explain it so I wont go into that too much. Also our replacement teacher.. garbage. I also started staying home alot because I learned more home at school.. we werent really being taught. I did it in the first term too but not as much.
Third term rolled in and boy was my absenteeism high. I was home dodging tests, studying for my final exams and finishing my SBAs. It was third term and I couldnt care about school work anymore only my exams. We had two weeks of school them study break (you get this two weeks before you start of exams). Even at this point in time I wasn’t even panicky despite the minimal work I was doing. I was going with the flow at this point. I made posts all along the way and I’m sure I talked about this on my blog. then came my exams. Overall they were pretty good and weren’t extremely bad. My favourite exam was chemistry. That was my best exam. I reviewed all of my exams and my opinions on this blog too~ I made one careless mistake in Biology which was doing a line graph instead of a barchart because I didnt read carefully. I only realised after my classmates talked about it BUT I was stressed since my concept, labelling, titling and scale was correct. I would only lose marks for the fact it was a line graph. After my long papers were done.. I stopped studying completely. I didnt study for the multiple choice part of our grades. I just did past papers since they always reasked a fair amount of questions on those. I was in vacation mode since May 18th while my exams finished June 11th.
I didn’t do any work this summer because honestly? There is no logical reason for me to do any. I commend anyone who does work in the summer but for me? There is no reason to. I didn’t do any the years before and I’m not doing any now. I only came across he concept of work in the summer when I joined the studyblr community and.. it made me raise an eyebrow.
August 1st I found out my results were being released August 12th. 10pm as per usual. Even during this time I was calm but I prayed alot. Last year when I did CSEC (O levels) I was so panicky but this year I was so calm. I think I’ve gotten used to everything. Fast forward to saturday August 11h at around 10pm.. I decided to check my email. I received an email from my year head saying I did not return a book (if you dont return books/paid fees etc your grades are locked) I immediately got upset because I returned all of my books and I made the damage fee for one of my texts. I immediately went to my parents and told them what happened and my mother wrote him a very.. sarcastic.. email. My year head promptly replied apologising and he forward the email to my principal. Also during this time my friends found a way to get their grades before the release date (this was when I realised something was wrong because I tried it but I couldn’t see my grades while everyone else could) eventually CXC (exam board) realised people were accessing heir results early and they locked down the whole site. I spent the whole of Sunday by my friend because I wasn’t expecting to be able to get my grades until monday. I got home at exactly 10pm I I just decided to check my account.. and there were my grades. Right in front of me. I got extremely happy. I got 3 1s and a 2 (.... a 2 in comm) two of my ones were an all A profile (chem and bio) and in EVS my profile was ABA. I was upset I didnt get 4 1s but hey.. Im still super happy because I thought I was going to get a 5 in comm x). Each time I look at my grades I smile stupidly because all of my hard work paid off and this was the first time I ever really worked for something. At Csec I barely tried and I got 4 1s and 5 2s.. I couldve done better if I really tried. This is year I put in so much work and it showed and I couldn’t be happier. I wouldnt be able to get a National scholarship BUT I can still get an exhibition which is less money and Im still happy about that :D Everything I did right (and wrong) this ear I’m taking note of and improving for me second year of sixth form and I can’t wait to see what happens.

CONGRATULATIONS again for the milestone!! it's awesome. I hope you're having a great day! how did your year go? is there anything you plan on doing differently next year?
This is so late but so much has been going on in my life ughh Im so sorry. But I hope you have a great day too <3
My year has probably been the easiest year I have ever had. Alot of people say sixth form is extremely tough and so on but I has never been too stressful for me other than the trying to balance homework/assignments/independent work/tests etc but I still managed to be on time with everything (something I have never been able to do before) I changed my work ethic and mentality towards alot of things between 5th form and sixth form and that has helped me out alot.
The only thing I would probably do different is to ease up on the studying as to avoid burning out so early in the school year. I went really hard and thus caused me to burn out about 3 months or so before my exams and I struggled with studying coming up to them but luckily the work was in grained in me so I didnt have to do serious catching up when exam season came around only light recapping + past papers which I really enjoy.

Hey do you have any tips for studying for A levels or ways you stayed motivated? I’m about to go into lower sixth and I’m SCARED
Okay here’s the thing: I was never always motivated through out Lower sixth. In the first term (or semester what ever you call it) and up until mid term of the second term, I was extremely motivated and had such a positive mind set to EVERYTHING. but coming towards the third term/exam season I think I suffered a serious burn out where I couldnt even study etc (thank God I did so much work in the first term and in the christmas vacation because thats when I completed everything in my syllabus for all of my subjects) but here are some stuff I did:
1. I got the syllabus for all of my potential subjects I would like to do in sixth form in the early. Around this time last year I already had the syllabi for environmental science, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and the mandatory subject lower sixthers had to do: communication studies.
2. Along with the syllabi, I started gathering online note resources to familiarise myself with the content. This also helped me to get excited and motivated for sixth form.
3.In the first term of Sixth form,I set a goal for myself:To get a scholarship (if you get 4 grade 1s at CAPE you can get a scholarship) and that helped me to be extremely motivated.
4. Creating this studyblr also helped me to be motivated 24/7 but that effect eventually went away. Also study youtubers and watching them succeed can motivate you too.
5. Secretly competing against others also helped.
6. I also just really liked the content in my subjects which played an extremely large part of me being motivated.Except for comm I didnt like it that much and it was evident in how I did my exam. It is my weakest subject no question and I havent even seen my grades yet.
Some study tips I have:
1. I don’t know if it would be possible for you but, finish your entire syllabus on your own. Trust me it helps alot. In the christmas vacation I finished my syllabus for all of my subjects and I taught myself everything. It helped me alot because I was able to start studying earlier, doing whole past papers, going for help with subjects that I didnt understand and watching the class do stuff which you are already covered on is.. quite satisfying.
2. If you are doing the above, make sure you constantly recap. I can’t stress how important recapping is. I had to recap things so much even if I was already great at them. The more you recap the more of a second nature everything will become and the less likely you are to forget.
3. Don’t only study for tests. Study to learn. If you only study for tests then to me you are less likely to retain information. So sometimes I would study things just because so I ensure I understand things.
4. Videos. Videos are so important Sometimes I couldn’t bare to look in books anymore so I would go on youtube and watch some videos on topics and it would be just as effective.
5. I dont even know if I need to say it because it’s so stressed in this community but please. Always make sure you PRACTICE what ever you learn. Thats how I became really good at maths. I would go home open my text book and just do working for hours so it is embedded in my mind. I brought that practice over to chemistry, biology and environmental science and it helped out ALOT.
These are just a few of the things I did that helped me out. I dont know how helpful they are but the most important thing that I said already is: just make sure you are enjoying what you are doing because that’s the biggest help you can get. When I liked a topic I was more likely able to remember things from it and also was more likely to study/recap it.
