I got a commission to recreate these beautiful ducks!
🥹 they’re delightful
the markings should end up kind of streaky and a little more brown, but who knows how it’ll actually look once it’s glazed

not subjecting pictures of my bird to any form of anti-ai scraping filter because i love her and would like for the machine to absorb the image of this one little creature into its concept of 'bird' so thoroughly that a thousand years later when we're all dead and some unimaginable being boots up an old computer and asks it to imagine a bird something of her remains in what is shown.

i've been terrorising my neighbours by Singing With My Bird, which is just me making increasingly stupid squeaky sounds until she starts responding and we start duetting squeaky high sounds. Like a soprano duo if neither party knew what music was. it sounds terrible. sometimes i grab the harp and improvise along. we are having fun. <3

I've used at least 30 different thread colours on this by now i think though you can't really tell because most of it is to archieve a more natural looking shading, so they're all fairly similar. 😅

what's fun though is that i'm finally moving towards giving the wings some proper structure! Here's the difference between the right and left wing. The feathers are oversized and somewhat unrealistic because 1. the wings on the apulian bowl have a very odd shape 2. that unrealistic wingshape is echoed in some medieval embroidered angels! So i am basing my approach to the feathers on those

^ that last one is the base two layers, pretty much. I will be going over what you see in the 2st picture (3 wing layers) again, but the there is a nice 3d quality emerging. Also will be going over the peacock feathers with darker single metallic thread again-- the bright green silk thread adds some nice shine but is too thick for my tastes on its own. The metal thread is thinner by far.
if you're wondering; yes i'm still working on embroidering the siren from the ancient bowl. :)

still far from done!

look at these very round polka-dotted little siren perfume bottles!
Apparently there was a hole "for suspension" through the hair for both of them; I wonder if people might have worn them? or maybe hung them on display in their homes.

something about this figurine really reminds me of ceramics some people make now! It's very stylised in a way i can only describe as 'cute.' The proportions and roundness...
And the way the bird is flapping its wings reminds me of how chickens move! If you've ever had pet chickens you probably know what I mean. They'll stand there and flap wildly without any intent of taking off. It's easy to imagine an artist observing birds doing the same all those centuries ago. :)
The first chickens were introduced in the region sometime before this was made, so maybe it's even actually chicken? or just a very chubby dove.
Cypro-Archaic II, ca. 600–480 BCE.

just a few seconds of Vaiya making some very quiet little sounds (and me making sounds back at her sorry. I didn't want her to feel ignored hahah) and blinking, contemplative after eating a lot of apple. 🐦🍎
