Sorry to bring this up again but can we make one thing clear: You cannot "wear jirai".

Jirai kei is a subculture and whilst there are specific styles and brands commonly associated with it, those styles aren't "jirai". Jirai stems from and primarily surrounds culture around mental illness, homelessness and self-destructive/explosive behaviour, which is why it translates to landmine.

I think it's also important to remember within the western community that a lot of it is directly related to the culture around mental health, suicide and self harm within Japan itself and not just as a whole.

The reason jirais are called jirai is due to explosive outbursts and outwardly/visibly being mentally ill. It's something that stemmed from a culture of ableism and a lack of understanding/care regarding mental health that is a lot more severe in Japan than I think a lot of people realise. It's a derogatory term.

The styles associated with people who would be considered jirai are a lot more varied than is often represented within the western community - understandably considering most don't have a way to see the evolution of the subculture in japan itself.

If you want to wear one of the styles associated with jirai such as girly kei, do it, but please stop trying to rebrand/"reform" jirai.

Yes, there are specific looks that kind of visually solidify you as a landmine within the subculture, however there is no set "jirai look/style".

This isn't me actively trying to "call out" anyone, and I may have not correctly worded/explained some things because I'm sleep deprived as fuck but yeah

A study sort of thing I did comparing popular fashion trends amongst landmines between 2020 and 2023 to show how broadly "jirai kei fashion" can be defined as landmine people's tastes change overtime. You can see the change in preference from cute girly kei fashion to the cooler sabukaru-like "alt girl" silhouette that has been increasing in popularity recently. Some more notes I have about the difference in trends are

2020: still heavily attached to their tamer "ryousangata" roots. With sweeter girly kei fashion and still few edgy elements in play, the image is fairly "clean" and preppy compared to future trend developments, limited piercings and preppy styling and all. A cute yet "deceptive" fragile image (ぴえん系) was ideal with not as much emphasis on showing off "wild jirai-ness" in appearance.

2023: as the wilder delinquent-like side of jirai behavior has gotten more and more attention in the media, there has been an increase in landmines purposely showing off their "jirai-ness" by donning more intimidating darker styles as a defense mechanism of sorts (same also applied to girly fashion when it became associated with landmines). With more visibly edgy motifs like heavy facial piercings and tattoos reminiscent of the underground visual kei scene, sabukaru-inspired trends like menhera/yamikawaii print tees and hoodies and legwarmers, and a sharper almost "grotesque" style of makeup, a loud visibly "dangerous" and rebellious image has become wildly popular amongst landmines. I guess if the 2020 image of landmine was "ぴえん系", the 2023 image of landmine would be... "オラオラ系"???

What is jirai?

Jirai/landmine/地雷 (romaji/english/kanji)

Jirai is a subculture based in Japan. It popped up around 2020 as kids-young adults where running away to live in Toyoko (therefor the name Toyoko kids). There they would make money via usually unsafe ways. They usually ran away because of the pressures of society and they knew they would find people like them in Toyoko. Most of the jirais who all hung out/'lived' in the street would engage in self destructive tendencies like s3lf h@rm, substance abuse, clubs/host clubs, pr0stituti0n and more.

Jirais are people who dont want to get better/dont care about getting better/want to get worse. there are jirais who flip flop between wanting to get better and wanting to get worse but the majority dont want to get better. We often find comfort in being messed up

Jirai started off as an insult towards mentally ill ppl/the toyoko kids in Japan. Jirai was/is now reclaimed by actual jirais. Even where i live in Canada ive been called a landmine as an insult.

Often jirais have mental illnesses/disorders that make them have mood swings or make them "act crazy" (ex. bpd, bipolar, npd, aspd, ect).

Jirai fashion. What is it reallly?

The fashion associated with jirai is called dark girly kei and it falls under the girly kei umbrella. Now its less in fashion in Japan with jirais (there are still jirais who wear it!)

The classic makeup associated with jirai is called pien makeup. Its supposed to give off a sad look or like this emoji: 🥺

Saying all it is is a fashion/ignoring the roots of jirai can and is watering it down. Going into jirai spaces and trying to "reclaim" it as just a fashion is dumb as it was/still is an insult towards actual jirais.

Q: Is jirai only for female people?

A: Nope any gender can be jirai!

Q: Do you have to wear the stereotypical jirai fashion to be jirai?

A: Nope! Jirai is a lifestyle. Youre just more likely for people to recognize that youre a jirai if you wear dark girly kei.

Q: What if i want to wear dark girly but im not a jirai?

A: Wear whatever you want! You only live once. I would suggest to stay away from calling yourself jirai tho. Not only cuz it can water our safe space down but also so people dont assume things about you that are not true.

There's nothing wrong with people wearing jirai (girly kei or elsewise) regardless of their mental wellbe, you just need to think of it like wearing a more covert menhera — there are elements of mental health and other darker topics in or linked to it which you can't just ignore or claim as not existing in the first place. Even if you are a fashion jirai exclusive It is important to acknowledge the subculture origins and history of how you dress

Jirai kei, as the fashion alone, is just an augmented version of pre-existing fashions (girly kei, tenshi kawaii, etc. [These are the base styles to jirai so if you like the style but dont want to be jirai {if that makes sense} id recommend these]) with more menhera elements so if you like the fashion you do you, fashion is meant for fun — it's a positive way of expressing yourself whether that be expression of joy or struggle — and if you like jirai kei and it is what suits your fancy you have the right to wear it <3
