Writing Notes: Dynamic Characters
Here’s a checklist of common attributes of successful protagonists and other primary characters. Dynamic characters...
Are flawed
Have preferences
Have histories
Have enemies
Change
Are surprising
It’s worth dedicating some time to writing detailed character sketches for your main characters, so that you can know them well as you introduce them to your readers. Not all of the character development will make it into your final draft, but the strong foundation will be evident in each bit of dialogue and moment of action.

Another humans and aliens post because im hooked on it still.
Humans are friendly. Really friendly. Theyll make friends with anything that can move. They pack bond like crazy and they seem to understand their emotions better than any other species and tend to be the therapist of the ship.
So, why is it that, on the ships, with more than a couple humans on it, are the ones that have the most fights.
Humans are so friendly, you could probably do just about anything to them and they wouldnt even so much as blink. But one human woke up another human too early one day and they both ended up in the medbay. The worst part is- they were back to being friends again not even a full day cycle later.
There had been another fight between a couple of other humans too, but this fight wasnt physical. It was a screaming match, or atleast thats what the humans called it. This fight wasnt even physical but the humans involved in this one had cried in this one. They did not go back to being friends afterwards. It made no sense- but what made even less sense happened a week later.
A team of humans showed up for a 'debate'. To the aliens understanding- it was a series of arguements over a couple of prepared questions. Every alien on the ship expected there to be more tears and more sadness- but instead the humans cheered on the debate and the people screaming at eachother laughed about it afterwards.
Any alien with enough sentience on the ship that day remembered the fact that despite being as friendly as they were, humans are still very, very unexplored territory.

Human Observation Log 192
Out of concern for our Human crewmate, I tried to warn them about the Nardian that just joined our crew. As you know, Nardian’s are highly volatile and will not hesitate to challenge even weak species to duel. They bath weekly in the blood of animals and come from a planet that is constantly at war. Their aggression is well known to all but when I informed our Human, Kim, they became agitated. They accused me of being ‘racist’ and expressed their ‘deep disappointment.’
I do not understand. I was merely concerned for their physical wellbeing. Kim left, declaring their intention to become friends with the Nardian. Human’s do not understand that it is impossible to befriend a Nardian.
Human Observation Log 192: Follow up
The Human has befriended the Nardian. His name is Greg. I have been invited to join them for red mud baths as a form of ‘self-care.’ I am beginning to believe Human Kim could befriend anyone short of an Android.
Human Observation Log 192: Follow up
Human Kim has befriended the Android and I understand nothing.

Humans being the first. Not the strongest or the smartest or the weirdest or the most violent. Just the first.
We called out into the dark over and over. We sent out messages in hopes. We searched every planet we could reach, in hopes of any sign of life. Any at all.
We thought, hoped we were the last, because we couldn’t bear the idea of being the one ones this awake and alive in a world as vast as this.
And we died alone.
When the others are born, many many years later, they find us, everything we left for them.
They recover The Golden Record and look at it a million times over, they dig up our fossils and put us in museums, they study us for years and years, loving us as we love our ancestors’ painted hands on cave walls.
In a lot of their languages, the word they use for us has the same root for “mother”.

Modern Fantasy Monsters: Monsters and Fashion
In a modern fantasy setting it’s only fair that there would be some fashion that would be inspired by more fantastical items of clothing mixed in with more modern clothing styles.
Imagine if these sentiments changed with the different era’s of fashion as the world changed and evolved. Imagine if more fantastical/ old fashioned clothing came back as a popular item during the time, for example, imagine mixing a corset with a skirt waist dress of the 50’s or long flowing sleeves mixed with bell bottom jeans.
Different fashion designers travel to other realms to get inspiration for their fashion lines to see what other species are wearing in their own space.
Elemental resistant clothing for fire and water elementals so their clothes don’t get burned and or soaking wet with their magical properties.
Different patterns that are more appealing towards different races; Flowers and plant patterns appealing more to fae-folk while more nautical patterns will appeal more to merfolk and water elementals.
Magic infused fashion that gives the wearer different effects. (A scarf that is self heating through fire infused thread in the material or a bracelet that gives the wearer a boost of confidence when wearing it)
Magical tailors weave enchanted threats in clothing to make them all have a personalized touch that makes the user feel special when wearing that specific brand.
Clothing brands that are specifically tailored to different species for them to have comfortable clothes that will fit their size and shape.
Jeans that have holes in the back so that species with tails can comfortably wear pants.

Modern Fantasy Monsters: Modern Magic
Phones that are specifically made with different creatures in mind. Tiny phones made for fairies that are solar powered and can also be charged with their magic. Models of phones made for witches that have extreme durability for when they dropped from great heights when witches fly on their brooms.
Speaking of brooms, witches brooms are like models like phones. The new model of witch brooms come with different perks such as a wand connector so that witches can connect their wand to their boom.
Witches and wizards who tattoo protective spells across their arms to give them good luck or healing.
Music being a vital part of magic and witches making playlist for specific spells. Rock music being for more destructive and manic spells, Classical music is more light magic with other genres being different types of magic.
Street graffiti that can move around due to magic.
New laws being created for magic in particular that have evolved in time due to different court cases that go through time.

A fire was reported from a neighboring building close to Kalideo Studio Production in the late hours of December 16, operators arrived on the scene ten minutes after the fire was called in from a neighboring residential building seeing the inferno in the small animation studio. Eyewitnesses state that there was someone within the studio at the time of the burning however the flames were too great for any first responders to go into the studio. Once the flames receded firefighters descended into the studio to find the charred body of studio producer and animator Abraham Bright on the ground. Abraham Bright was taken to HeartHaven Hospital to have his body examined by medical staff. From police investigation after the incident there is evidence that could show that Abraham Bright was dead before the fire. But, with no witnesses to prove the claim there needs to be a further investigation to figure out the real cause of the fire and death of this beloved children's animator. The Oak Newspaper, December 20 1992

I wish more urban fantasy romance stories could be more silly. Like, of course there’s a group of couples who have werewolf partners that meet up every full moon to take their werewolf partners for a romp in the park together to let out all that energy while their human partners stand around talking to the others like:
Human: “Oh yeah, that’s my boyfriend Paul with the ripped up basketball shorts. Yeah, he likes to run around in circles sometimes when he’s excited.”
Human: “Greg can be a bit shy sometimes when opening up to new werewolves so sometimes he likes to wistful stare up at the moon. But in reality he’s just really trying to make it seem like he’s not there right now.

Writing Tips
Punctuating Dialogue
✧
➸ “This is a sentence.”
➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.
➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”
➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”
➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”
➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”
➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.
“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.
“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”
➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”
➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”
However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!
➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.
If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)
➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“
“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.
➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.
➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”
➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.
“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”
➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.
“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”
