NASA Discovers a Long-Sought Global Electric Field on Earth - NASA Science
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
An international team of scientists has successfully measured a planet-wide electric field thought to be as fundamental to Earth as its gravity and magnetic fields. Known as the ambipolar electric field, scientists first hypothesized over 60 years ago that it drove atmospheric escape above Earth’s North and South Poles. Measurements from a suborbital rocket have confirmed the existence of the ambipolar field and quantified its strength, revealing its role in driving atmospheric escape and shaping our ionosphere — a layer of the upper atmosphere — more broadly. The paper was published today in the journal Nature.
Using observations from a NASA suborbital rocket, an international team of scientists has, for the first time, successfully measured a planet-wide electric field thought to be as fundamental to Earth as its gravity and magnetic fields. Known as the ambipolar electric field, scientists first hypothesized over 60 years ago that it drove how our planet’s atmosphere can escape above Earth’s North and South Poles. Measurements from the rocket, NASA’s Endurance mission, have confirmed the existence of the ambipolar field and quantified its strength, revealing its role in driving atmospheric escape and shaping our ionosphere — a layer of the upper atmosphere — more broadly.

San Francisco goes after websites that make AI deepfake nudes of women and girls
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
Nearly a year after AI-generated nude images of high school girls upended a community in southern Spain, a juvenile court this summer sentenced 15 of their classmates to a year of probation. But the artificial intelligence tool used to create the harmful deepfakes is still easily accessible on the internet, promising to “undress any photo” uploaded to the website within seconds.

Which Countries Are Using ChatGPT the Most? [Infographic]
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
ChatGPT has become almost asynchronous with generative AI, with most people that use AI tools now referring to ChatGPT as their key entryway. Of course, other tools are emerging, with Google adding generative AI elements into Search, and Meta bolting AI chatbots onto everything. But when we’re talking AI, it’s ChatGPT that’s the most universally understood tool, making it a key benchmark for broader AI adoption. So which countries are using ChatGPT the most?

ChatGPT-style AI app to be trialled in eight South Australian high schools - ABC News
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
Education Minister Blair Boyer says it is essential that students learn to use AI safely before they graduate. The trial is set to run for two months, after which a decision about a broader rollout will be made.
Eight public high schools in South Australia are set to become the first in the country to trial an artificial intelligence (AI) app.
The SA government is looking to help students develop skills to protect themselves online as AI becomes more prevalent.
The app will show students how AI can support their studies while also protecting them from information that could put them at risk.

Chatbot maker Replika says it’s okay if humans end up in relationships with AI
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
The founder of chatbot company Replika on the bold, weird future of human-AI relationships.
Today, I’m talking with Replika founder and CEO Eugenia Kuyda, and I will just tell you right from the jump, we get all the way to people marrying their AI companions, so get ready.
Replika’s basic pitch is pretty simple: what if you had an AI friend? The company offers avatars you can curate to your liking that basically pretend to be human, so they can be your friend, your therapist, or even your date. You can interact with these avatars through a familiar chatbot interface, as well as make video calls with them and even see them in virtual and augmented reality.

All the Ways to Tell a Picture Was Made With AI
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
This post is part of Lifehacker’s “Exposing AI” series. We’re exploring six different types of AI-generated media, and highlighting the common quirks, byproducts, and hallmarks that help you tell the difference between artificial and human-created content. AI art isn't just a concept anymore: It's everywhere, and you've likely encountered it in the wild, whether you knew it or not. AI art has won awards (albeit amid controversy), been used in Netflix films (again, facing criticism) and has tricked untold numbers of Facebook users with false images of babies, Jesus, and vegetables. It's not going anywhere anytime soon.

NASA successfully streams 4K video to ISS using lasers
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
NASA sends 4K video from a flying plane to the ISS using lasers 900 Mbps from Earth to orbit, and I still can't get reliable Wi-Fi in my backyard Jealous of the fact that the International Space Station has better internet than you do? Well, here's one more benchmark to envy: NASA has successfully streamed 4K video from an in-flight aircraft to the ISS and back again.

Text generators like ChatGPT have dominated my conversations with educators about AI in the past year. Despite their emergence a year before chatbots, text-to-image generators like DALL-E or Midjourney typically come up only in generic conversations about plagiarism or bias.

Data by Design
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
Data visualization is not a recent innovation. Even in the eighteenth century, activists and economists, as well as educators and politicians, were fully aware of the power of visualization to produce new knowledge. But who, more precisely, was wielding this power? On whose behalf? And for whose benefit? The answers to these questions are what this project explores.

10 things I always do immediately after installing Linux - and why
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
I've tested countless Linux distributions over the years. Here's my essential list of the top post-install steps to take before you dive in too deep.
So, you've finally installed Linux, and you're ready to make it your go-to operating system (or at least explore it to find out if it's a worthy replacement). You might find the OS pretty easy to use out of the gate. Depending on the desktop environment you've chosen (such as GNOME, Plasma, Budgie, Pantheon, Cinnamon, etc.), it probably has all the bits and pieces you're used to.
