So icy burrrrr ⛄️❄️ Those sparkly dots on the leaves are bladder cells, a modified trichome that contributes to the salt tolerance of this coastal plant. Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) accumulates salt it uptakes into these bladder cells to protect the rest of the plant from salt damage. I’m not a picky eater but sea boogers (AKA oysters) are on a short list of things that I’d rather not eat. I don’t mind the flavor but the texture of those slimy sea creatures is not my favorite.
