so i was just watching the battle of britain (1969) with my dad (world's biggest ww2 planes nerd) and in the sequence leading up to the bombing of london, there's a shot with two german heinkels where you can see a power station and buildings below them:

and at this specific shot my dad paused the film and got up to point at the television. and he said:

"see that power station? that's tilbury power station. that wasn't built until 1960. and see those houses? that's gravesend. and right down there in one of those houses is an 8 year old boy out playing in the back garden. and he looks up and sees messerschmitts and heinkels flying over his garden and runs inside to his mother to tell her that there are messerschmitts and heinkels in the sky. and she told me to be quiet and stop making things up. she didn't believe me. so i ran back outside and had my dream come true as i watched real german planes fly overhead."

he grew up reading nothing but the biggles books and comics. he joined the RAF while he was at university. he learnt to fly, got his PPL and aerobatics license, and bought his own plane, but he was mostly forced to stop flying because of his diabetes and he sold the plane when my brother and i were born. his office in our house has more war plane models and photos and books than work items and he can identify pretty much any ww2 plane on the spot just by looking at it. honestly, the way he talks about flying, i think he really, really wishes he could have made a career out of it.

yesterday, 57 years after those messerschmitts and heinkels flew over his back garden while they were filming this movie, he got to fly a real spitfire himself from an airfield a few hours out of london. i was on photographer duty with a proper camera and there's one photo of him getting out of the plane after landing with just the hugest smile on his face, honestly i've known the man my whole life and i have never seen him smile that wide.

life really has its full circle moments sometimes. isn't it weird to think that maybe in 50 years time you'll be watching a movie from your childhood and you'll see your house, or your city, or a building, or a person, and realise just how little has changed.

i wrote this fic in november but i never posted it here because i was too attached to my newsies blog to drift too far away from newsies but yknow new beginnings or whatever. it's called the creatures that don't die and it's like my most popular fic ever (thank you fifth most popular fandom on ao3) and i am SO proud of it honestly i cannot express... but also i'm currently pouring like my entire heart and soul into a sequel for it called seven colours so . please read pretty please pretty pretty please?

fic summary:

Izuku is never born. He just wakes up one day.

He stands up and looks around, and as he feels the life of everything in the forest thriving around him, he feels an inescapable, unstoppable urge to protect it.

That's his purpose. The knowledge slots into place in his mind like a jigsaw piece.

1000 years later, Aizawa is still not entirely sure what exactly Izuku is, although Izuku has tried to explain it to him several times before. All he really understands is that the human boy he finds lurking in his office every so often is only human when he wants to be (which isn't particularly often), and that even though it's been about 20 years since the two of them met, Izuku hasn't aged a day.

or: izuku is a shapeshifter whose job is to protect life, and after a thousand years of wandering the planet, he somehow finds himself working as an undercover operative alongside a very attractive and very mortal blonde man who he might, just maybe, have fallen in love in with. oops
