I have finally figured out Mary Musgrove. It's all about this quote:
Even the smooth surface of family-union seems worth preserving, though there may be nothing durable beneath.
So, Mary grew up in a household where only surface attributes (rank and beauty) were valued. Her father and Elizabeth would have treated her fine as a member of their family, but that is the only reason they tolerated her; because she is their "set". While Anne offers a more real sort of love, it makes sense that Mary would aspire to the love of her only remaining parent.
Mary's version of love is all about status and show, which is why she's so offended that the Musgroves don't respect her precedence at the table. She is the daughter of a baronet! Devaluing her rank means undervaluing HER.
But the Musgroves can't even understand this, because they actually love Mary, or they would if she would let them. For them, the informality of their home shows their togetherness. Who should enter the dinner room first does not matter at all to them, so they cannot figure out why Mary insists on it.
Mary Musgrove and the Musgrove family fundamentally speak different love languages; Mary cannot understand how much her in-laws are offering.
#that honestly makes me a little sad for Mary#and it cant be easy knowing that youre older sister was your husband's FIRST choice#that being said i think its pretty clear shes also not really INTERESTED in learning to speak the musgroves'language as it were#so sympathies are limited

I just had a revelation. So the info we basically know about Sauron is:
He's Middle Earth's most admirable twink
He loves order and organisation
He loves beauty and crafting
He has an unhealthy obsession with jewellery, especially shiny rings
Conclusion: if Sauron lived in our modern times he would definitely be a wedding planner.
