this isn't a new observation but it's fucked up that listening to a song a lot when you're in a specific situation can mentally put you back into that point of your life when you listen to it again later. Like something just came on shuffle and i felt like i was going home from english class. There are certain songs that make me feel like i'm 16 years old in the middle of September. This is both magical and completely useless

today in will wood violin covers, here's a bit of "against the kitchen floor"!

this is a surprisingly tricky song to learn by ear, because while the melody was easy enough to figure out, I'd have to play it mostly in third position because it would have a lot of ugly open string crossings if I played it in first. So after I learned the notes, I also had to figure out how to make them sound good, too. I decided to focus on the bridge (everyone's favorite part!) and final chorus today, but I managed to figure out the whole thing; it's very fun to play!

the tricky part is, I want to convey the emotional intensity of this song, so I still have to improve my phrasing. I'm not a performer, but I really, really want to do it justice because it's such a beautiful piece of music, with such passion and vulnerability behind it. Once my muscle memory has it fully hammered in, I'd like to work more with the vibrato and dynamics so I can really get this where I want it. It's still in the process, but I'm making progress ;)
