In 1070, Margaret, the granddaughter of King Edmund II Ironside of England, married King Malcolm III of Scotland in Dunfermline. The queen was so enamored with these lands that she decided to establish a religious community there and invited Benedictine monks from Canterbury. Thus, in 1072, Dunfermline Abbey was founded. Initially, this monastery—probably built on the site of the church where Malcolm and Margaret were married—had rather modest dimensions. However, by 1128, under the decree of David I, the sixth son of the royal couple who had ascended to the throne of Scotland at the time, it was significantly expanded. Later, it was connected by a covered walkway to the royal palace in Dunfermline.
Saint Conan's Kirk is located in the village of Loch Awe in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. During the 2016 Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland public vote, it was recognized as one of the top 10 buildings in Scotland over the past 100 years.
