The children of King Saul

I made King David a lion because in the bible Lions frequently represent royalty and are frequently used in depictions of God/Angels. Seeing as David is the true king of Gods land, I thought it was fitting, even though lions aren’t exactly small…

Jonathan is a fox, and I was a bit hesitant to make him that for a bit. Foxes usually represent deceit, mischief and slyness in the bible (normally not in a positive way). However Jonathan is a bit sneaky and mischievous. He beats the phillistines by causing confusion and chaos, he tricks his father to find out his father’s plan, and he (unknowingly) convinces the other soldiers to break their fast. So overall, he seems to embody a lot of fox characteristics.

For Michal, I chose a Gazelle because they’re graceful and beautiful. We don’t really know much about her, because the bible doesn’t tend to focus on or even describe many women, but she does help David make a quick escape when fleeing from Saul, which gazelle do. There’s also a verse where David refers to Jonathan as a Gazelle, and since Michal and Jonathan are siblings, I thought it fit.

Saul is a jackal, because they’re lonely, solitary, scavenger animals. By the time David enters the story, Saul is broken and struggling. He’s tried to kill Jonathan once (despite their seemingly good relationship before and after), he tries to kill David twice out of paranoia, and he is tormented by invisible evil spirits. He pushes his loved ones away, and clings to his title of King (the last thing he has left from God before God abandoned him) like a life-raft. His story reeks of loneliness and desperation all the way until his death. So I found the Jackal to represent him perfectly.

My analysis on whizzers first move in whizzvin chess game

Ok so, Marvin mentions in ‘this had better come to a stop' that he'd rather Whizzer like him for his smarts; and in "Marvin at the psychiatrist" he says one of the things he likes about Whizzer is that Whizzer makes him feel smart. In "the Chess game" Whizzer is acting dumb, like he doesn't even know the pieces or what they do, asking Marvin for help because he's helpless, but he ends up making a very good first move! I think he was just pretending to be dumb so Marvin wouldn't feel emasculated. We also know Whizzer puts on an act to be loved without having to reveal his true self and be hurt when his true self is rejected (though, this usually causes his relationships to be unstable, flings, or casual when he truly wants something meaningful), and I think-if we're using the chess game as a metaphor for their relationship-this may have been Whizzer letting that act go for a second, showing his true self to Marvin, which is why Marvin looks so caught off guard, and also why Whizzer is so horribly upset in "the games I play"; because his worst fear has come true. He showed his true self, and got rejected for it.
