at least season 7 had a non-binary main character you never really see in a tv show and had some good clips and character interactions. a good soundtrack, too. there’s nothing really redeemable about this season, especially in the context of their behind the scenes decisions. this is probably the most dated and regressive season of druck which is ironic since they want to show mailin as progressive and inspirational.

Why is being brave portrayed as stealing books and destroying them, but not recognising your mistakes, standing up for them and apologising? They weren’t expelled for saying what they think but for destroying school property (why yara?). Teenagers are dumb. To take this mistake and turn it around, learn from it and make something better out of it would be a lot more powerful and could’ve still had this “prank” as it’s climax.
They do have good points. The curriculum seriously needs a modernization. The nude leak is Ben’s fault and people should stand together rather than pointing fingers, but the foundation of all this being Mailin not doing her exam task right, getting a bad grade and then destroying books as revenge is just so dumb.

I guess a list of characters not assassinated by s8 could be awfully short in the end. Like you don’t recognise Ava or Finn anymore. Nora makes an awful statement and everyone, except Kieu My, kisses Mailin’s ass for the stupid destruction of the books.
In the end we will be left with Consti and Lou staying true to their s7 selves (which is 😑), Yara still being the last rescue but mostly living in insta stories and chats and Josh still being his wholesome self because he isn’t shown anyway.
Just saying: your writing or understanding of the characters is truly awful if your audience wishes for them to not be shown too much, so they can’t be butchered.
I only live for their insta stories now!

By making Nora blame the victim, Ava became a character that we knew before. Can’t they just write characters as who they are without making them be out of characters?
(And Nora is going to London??)

the way druck is using ava’s character as a mouthpiece so they aren’t criticized for the worst storylines and writing choices is sick. they know fans wanted her as a main and that she’s the character that actually knows what activism really is. so they use her to coddle the white main character and satisfy the white fans that don’t care. and it’ll be used to tell fans who are rightfully critical of this to shut up.

finn and kieu my being the ones to openly disagree with the demonstration mailin and zoe made—they chose to do this to avoid backlash from the white viewers who drew ire towards ava in s6. so, finn and kieu my will be the educators this round, the coddlers of our beloved white main, while ava continues to be the cheerleader for mailin, even though she’s pointed out before how mailin uses her activism for her own social capital and personal gain, as she does here. also: it sucks that mailin had to “make a statement” now—they had to completely move the Biology exam & bring in a cleaning crew to pick up the mess she made.

so they willingly and voluntarily wrote the scene and made the connexion by themselves that this could be compared to nazis burning books and they still went with it and thought they were smart

but they’re not their characters…? they didn’t establish that relationship at all and the way they’re being shoved together just seems out of nowhere. it’s also just not a good storyline. sometimes working in real cast friendships can be great, but sometimes it’s not necessary to add them in the show when it doesn’t work with the narrative or previous seasons.
this mailin and zoe friendship is giving “the other actors didn’t have time in their schedules now that they aren’t the main or the main’s LI, so we have to put whoever we can together”

if i was involved in writing and producing this season, i really wouldn't want my name to be in the credits for any of that because id very much like to be employed again in the tv industry

if druck is trying to show mailin as a caricature and a cautionary tale then they should write and structure it better because that’s now how it’s coming across because they still want their main character to be someone people still like. they’re not willing to have an unlikable main character and that’s what’s making these last two seasons so bad.
