'Meaning' in a Capitalistic World
‘Meaning’ in a Capitalistic World
A study came out recently ranking some European countries in terms of which workers are more at risk of burnout, and Portugal came in #1. It was widely advertised and showed up everywhere in the news, but it isn’t anything new so I didn’t exactly think much on it. Nothing revolutionary and no new information. So it didn’t exactly stuck with me. However when writing this blog post it seemed like…

Legendar(ial) Millennial PS1 games
Legendar(ial) Millennial PS1 games
So a couple of days ago I got into a conversation with a co-worker about our favorite old-time ps1 games, we used to play as children. Turns out we had in common a sado-masochistic love over Digimon World 1, but a couple of others stood out as well. Since it’s a topic that makes me happy and I always love to get run over by the nostalgia truck, why not write about it! So here’s my list of some of…

The Work from Home Conundrum
The Work from Home Conundrum
So I’m a BIG fan of the whole “work from home” system. I’m sad it took a global pandemic for companies worldwide to understand workers in desk jobs can probably do their job just as efficiently, from the comfort of their own homes. And most are still skeptical (sceptikal? sckeptical? Sceptile?) and extremely eager to force people back to the office, so… fun. In my case, I always did my best work…

"Why can't you just duplicate money in the Harry Potter universe?" and today's endless QE policies
“Why can’t you just duplicate money in the Harry Potter universe?” and today’s endless QE policies
Well a quick Google search lets me know that the answer to that is “because it breaks the law” (aside from being easily discoverable and having a tendency to evaporate but we’ll overlook those issues for now). But… isn’t that exactly what the ECB and the Fed do with their “easy-money” policies? Print out new money, aka point their wands at the $1 bill and use the Gemini charm? At least that’s…

The Art of Pretending to Know
The Art of Pretending to Know
So I’m sure we’re all faced with situations in our day-to-day lives where we’re having a conversation with someone, and we have to act like we know what the heck they’re talking about. In my case it’s more the art of pretending to know what’s considered by other people “obvious”, but is in fact, to me, more like “oblivious”. I supposed it draws on our insecurities, where we’re too ashamed to…

depression is darkness.
it’s being in a lonely quiet place and not being able to open a window. not having a speck of light entering. sometimes you might be in a place filled with light, everywhere around you. and yet, in the dark you stay. watching the light from afar and knowing it’s right there, but being in the darkness, inside.
maybe you’re not always in the darkness. sometimes the light turns on inside of you, and the dark gets pushed into a corner itself. depression and mental illness is not being able to dispel that darkness, or being certain that it’s right there. watching you. waiting for the light to fade even a little, to pull you back into the corner. it wants your company, after all.
why are we like this though? why do some of us carry this pet around that has been forced on us by the world?
are the ones who walk in the light to blame? maybe it’s just jealousy speaking. maybe they have been or are in the darkness themselves.
arrogance would let one assume this curse has a higher purpose. maybe it elevates us. maybe struggle does in fact make the human being… stronger? smarter? more evolved?
a nice narcissistic thought.
this is our demon. we know it better than anyone. heck, sometimes we even like it. but it still manages to surprise us. it still manages to scare us. sometimes it’ll come home in a totally different shade of black, and we don’t recognize it. sometimes it’s shut out for years.
all the work and trials and tribulations are in an attempt to dispel this darkness. for however long possible. we hope that until the rest of our lives, but… is this true?
do the ones who escaped, shower it with light and never see it again? do they accept it as a part of them and live with it, contently?
it’s a love/hate relationship. you hate it and you want it to go away. but it won’t. so your only option is to accept it.
but sometimes… it’s hard turning on the light.
