What is Aari Embroidery? This subtle and delicate style dates back to Moghul times and beyond when male artisans created this embroidery on a commercial basis exclusively for royalty.  Aari embroidery is done with a hooked needle called the awl on light-weight fabrics that are stretched over a wooden frame.  The painting-like effect is achieved through the exclusive use of a very fine chain stitch, moving gently from darker to lighter shades of the same colour.  While all the other embroidery styles of Kutch are exclusive to this region, the Aari style is practised in other parts of India as well. It is the craftswomen of the Mochi community that create this embroidery. The Moghul influence still lingers in the floral motifs and the occasional use of gold and silver threads.
